The extracellular polysaccharide...(EPS) has been used in a wide variety of industrial applications because of gel formation, emulsion stability, control of the surface tension, water absorption and film formation etc. In this study, inhibitory activity on tyrosinase and inhibitory activity on angiotensin converting enzyme...(ACE) are determined. UV adsorption wavelength, beads formation of EPS were investigated. In the result, in 1%(w/v) EPS concentration, EPS had inhibitory activity of 71.8% on tyrosinase and inhibitory activity of 61.5% on angiotensin converting enzyme in 1.5% EPS concentration. Adsorption wavelength of EPS was UV-B,C . Beads based on EPS were prepared by w/o emulsion method and the shape of EPS beads observed by SEM was spherical and uniform.

Exposure to elevated temperatures, chemical (active oxigen), or physical stress (UV light) induces immediate physiological response, the expression of heat shock proteins in cells. Thus, cells with elevated Heat Shock Protein levels become more tolerant to stress conditions that are otherwise lethal. First, we studied on the new function of glucuronic acid (GA) as preventive material of skin aging. The application of the GA shows significant induction of Heat Shock Protein 70 kDa (HSP 70 kDa) in contrast to cells without it. GA at the concentration which can induce HSP 70 kDa, protects the cell death induced by second stress (heat shock and hydrogen peroxide) in NIH3T3 cells. Second, we studied on in vitro transdermal permeation characteristic of GA through the excised mouse skin. In this study, we compared the skin permeability of GA in water with O/W emulsion. As a result, skin permeation parameters of GA shows lag time 1.2 h, partition coefficient 0.114, permeation flult rate $0.83114 mg/cm^2/h.$ In case of lag time, O/W emulsion containing GA increase 2.48 h. Also, the total accumulation permeation content decreased in contrast to GA solution after 24 h. But it has long-term permeability of glucuronic acid. These results suggest that glucuronic acid could be a good cosmetic active ingredient.

Medimin A is a derivative of vitamin A which has been developed by coupling retinoic acid with polyethylene glycol(PEG) to enhance skin permeability and stability. We carried out the collagen synthesis and clinical test to examine the reducing effect of wrinkles by Medimin A. In vitro collagen synthesis was evaluated by quantitative assay of ($^3$H)-proline incorporation into collagenase sensitive protein in fibroblast cultures. Clinical test was evaluated by image analysis of skin replica, visual observation and self-estimated response of volunteers for 10 weeks. Medimin A stimulated about 40% in collagen synthesis. The area of main deep wrinkle on the skin replica was reduced 38.4% with topical application of O/W emulsion containing 0.2% Medimin A. The wrinkles on the eye region was also reduced 25.4%-44.1% by the visual observation and 93% of all volunteers responded that topical application of the O/W emulsion was showed some reducing effect of wrinkles after 10 weeks. From these results, we suggest that Medimin A is a potent anti-wrinkle agent by objective evaluation methods(in vitro collagen synthesis and image analysis of skin replica) and subjective evaluation methods(visual observation and self-estimated response of volunteers).
When emulsion is irradiated by a microwave, the energy absorbed by the emulsion is proportional to irradiation time. In case of a long exposure, the temperature of emulsion rises, its viscosity decrease, and subsequently increase the rate of demulsification. In this work, in order to improve demulsification rate, the studies on demusification and the Sauter mean diameter ($D_{32}$) for each microwaved emulsion with different irradiation mode(continuous, pulsative, and periodical irradiation) have been carried out. When the 30% W/O emulsion (sample #1) was irradiated for 600 sec and settled for 24 h, oil recovery rates from continuous, pulsative, and periodical microwave irradiation were 60.0%, 62.3%, and 96.2%, and the amounts of separated water were 26.5%, 35.0%, and 93.9%, respectively. Also, the Sauter mean diameters ($D_{32}$) were $47.183{\mu}m$, $111.547{\mu}m$, and $220.476{\mu}m$, respectively.

O/W emulsions were prepared by adding water to the solution containing amphiphilic resin and the mixed emulsifier of cetyl alcohol polyoxyethylene(20) sorbitan monooleate. Phase behavoir of these emulsions was studied at various HLB(Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance) values and temperatures. The polar oil emulsion containing the amphiphilic resin showed improved phase stability at various temperatures. Model compounds which contain one of the functional groups in the amphiphilic resin were used in the polar oil phase in order to study the effect of interaction between the functional group and the emulsifier on the phase stability of emulsion. These model compound emulsions showed the phase stability order of poly(acrylic acid)
In the w/o concentrated emulsion, the volume fraction of the dispersed is greater than 0.74 and the hydrophilic liquid is dispersed in the hydrophobic liquid of the continuous phase. The emulsion has the same appearance and behaviour as a gel. The polarity of the hydrophilic liquids and hydrophobic liquids, the pH and the ionic strength of the hydrophilic liquid are found to be important factors in the stability at the polymerization temperature such as $50^{\circ}C$. The lower the polarity of the hydrophobic liquid and the higher the polarity of the hydrophilic liquid, the more stable the emulsion. Electron microscopy studies of the hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer composites show that the particles of polyacrylamide, the dispersed phase, are separated by he network of the thin film of polystyrene, the continuous phase. This hydrophilic-hydrophobic polymer composites show higher permselectivity to water in the mixture of water-ethanol. The pervaporation experiment shows that the selectivity of the membrane ranges between 4-40 and increases with increasing enthanol concentration in the feed. The rate of permeation decreases with increasing ethanol concentration in the feed.
This study reports a microfluidic approach to produce monodisperse hydrogel microparticles in a simple and highly efficient manner. Specifically, we produce double emulsion drops with a thin oil shell surrounding an aqueous prepolymer solution, which is solidified via UV-induced free radical polymerization. When they are dispersed in an aqueous solution, the oil shell is dewetted due to the absence of surfactants, resulting in production of highly uniform hydrogel microparticles (C.V.=1%). Results show that production of monodisperse hydrogel microparticles with controllable size and composition can be achieved with minimal use of oil unlike water-in-oil (w/o) single emulsion-based approach. Furthermore, in-depth study of flow patterns in microfluidic device using a phase diagram exhibits a crucial relationship among relative flow rates while providing windows of readily controllable parameters for reliable manufacturing of hydrogel microparticles.
A cationic lipid emulsion (o/w) containing lipiodol and 1, 2-dioleoyl-sn- glycero-3-trimethylammonium-propane (DOTAP) has been prepared as a gene delivery system. In order to increase the transfection efficiency of the lipiodol emulsion, 1 2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-ethanolamine (DOPE) and polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80) were incorporated as additional lipids. By including DOPE and Tween 80, the cationic emulsion became a more potent gene carrier under in vitro condition in the presence of serum, and under in vivo condition. (omitted)
