  • For a fixed positive integer g, we let $\mathcal{P}_g=\{Y{\in}\mathbb{R}^{(g,g)}{\mid}Y=^tY>0\}$ be the open convex cone in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{g(g+1)/2}$. Then the general linear group GL(g, $\mathbb{R}$) acts naturally on $\mathcal{P}_g$ by $A{\star}Y=AY^tA(A{\in}GL(g,\mathbb{R}),\;Y{\in}\mathcal{P}_g)$. We introduce a notion of polarized real tori. We show that the open cone $\mathcal{P}_g$ parametrizes principally polarized real tori of dimension g and that the Minkowski modular space 𝔗g = $GL(g,\mathbb{Z}){\backslash}\mathcal{P}_g$ may be regarded as a moduli space of principally polarized real tori of dimension g. We also study smooth line bundles on a polarized real torus by relating them to holomorphic line bundles on its associated polarized real abelian variety.

  • We numerically investigate the effect of sunlight polarization on the absorption efficiency of V-shaped organic solar cells (VOSCs) using the finite element method (FEM). The spectral distribution of absorbance and the spatial distribution of power dissipation are calculated as a function of the folding angle for s-and p-polarized light. The absorption enhancement caused by the light-trapping effect was more pronounced for s-polarized light at folding angles smaller than $20^{\circ}$, where s-polarized light has a relatively larger reflectance than p-polarized light. On the other hand, the absorption efficiency for p-polarized light is relatively larger for folding angles larger than $20^{\circ}$, where the smaller reflectance at the interface of the VOSC is more important in obtaining high absorption efficiency.

  • We present the optical models and calculation results of thin-film organic solar cells (OSCs) at oblique incidence of light, using the transfer matrix method. The simple expression for the optical power dissipation is derived at oblique incidence for s- and p-polarized light. The spatial distribution of the electric field intensity, the optical power density, and the optical power dissipation are calculated in both s- and p-polarized light with respect to the incidence angle. We identify how the light absorption efficiency for p-polarized light becomes relatively larger than that for s-polarized light as the incidence angle increases.

  • Bud6p is a component of a polarisome that controls cell polarity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, we investigated the role of the Candide albicans Bud6 protein (CaBud6p) in cell polarity and hyphal development. CaBud6p, which consists of 703 amino acids, had 37% amino-acid sequence identity with the Bud6 protein of S. cerevisiae. The homozygous knock-out of CaBUD6 resulted in several abnormal phenotypes, such as a round and enlarged cells, widened bud necks, and a random budding pattern. In hypha-inducing media, the mutant cells had markedly swollen tips and a reduced ability to switch from yeast to hypha. In addition, a yeast two-Hybrid analysis showed a physical interaction between CaBud6p and CaAct1p, which suggests that CaBud6p may be involved in actin cable organization, like Bud6p in S. cerevisiae. Taken together, these results indicate that CaBud6 plays an important role in the polarized growth of C. albicans.

  • This paper proposes a polarimetric SAR image classification technique based on the degree of poarization(DoP) and copolarized phase-difference(CPD) statistics. At first, the formulation for the DoP and CPD is derived. Then, the classification technique is verified with the SAR full polarimetric L-band data with consideration of exceptional cases. The technique has capability of classifying SAR data into four major classes, such as bare surface, short-vegetation canopy, tall-vegetation canopy, and village.

  • We investigated spin-polarized current switching of Pac-man type II (PM-II) nanoelements in Pac-man shaped nanoscale spin-valves (Co/Cu/Py) using micromagnetic simulations. The effects of slot angle and antiferromagnetic (AFM) layer were simulated to obtain optimum switching in less than 2 ns. At a critical slot angle of $105^{\circ}$, the lowest current density for anti-parallel to parallel (AP-P) switching was observed due to no vortex or antivortex formation during the magnetic reversal process. All other slot angles for AP-P formed a vortex or antivortex during the magnetization reversal process. Additionally, a vortex or anti-vortex formed for all slot angles for parallel to anti-parallel (P-AP) switching. The addition of an AFM layer caused the current density to decrease significantly for AP-P and P-AP at slot angles less than $90^{\circ}$. However, at slot angles greater than $90^{\circ}$, the current density tended to decrease by less amounts or actually increased slightly as shape anisotropy became more dominant. This allowed ultra-fast switching with 5.05 and $5.65{\times}10^8\;A/cm^2$ current densities for AP-P and P-AP, respectively, at a slot angle of $105^{\circ}$.

  • A new polarimetric SAR image classification technique based on the degree of polarization (DoP) and the co-polarized phase-difference (CPD) is presented in this paper. Since the DoP and the CPD of a scattered wave provide information on the randomness of the scattering and the type of scattering mechanisms, at first, the statistics of the DoP and CPD are examined with measured polarimetric SAR image data. Then, a DoP-CPD diagram with appropriate boundaries between six different classes is developed based on the SAR image. The classification technique is verified using the JPL AirSAR and ALOS PALSAR polarimetric data. The technique may have capability to classify an SAR image into six major classes; a bare surface, a village, a crown-layer short vegetation canopy, a trunk-layer short vegetation canopy, a crown-layer forest, and a trunk-dominated forest.

  • Precise molecular configuration elucidation of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) through advanced spectroscopic techniques is pivotal for enhancing P3HT-based photovoltaic device efficiencies since its high charge-carrier mobility is directly correlated to its well-ordered structure. In this study, we examine Raman depolarization ratios of annealed and non-annealed P3HT films to elucidate their intermolecular π-π configurations. Our findings suggest that the backbone of the annealed film possesses stronger π-π conjugation overlaps than that of the non-annealed film owing to the greater depolarization ratio of the annealed film. In addition, the depolarization ratios are also supported by theoretical calculations, where parallel-stacked thiophene structures display a higher depolarization ratio compared with that of twisted-stacked structures, as calculated by the Møller-Plesset perturbation theory. This study highlights the utility of polarized Raman spectroscopy as a versatile tool for assessing the degree of molecular order in highly conjugated polymer films.

  • In this paper, we studied the liquid crystal(LC) alignment and generation of pretilt angle in nematic (N) LC with oblique p-wave polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on the two kinds of the polyimide (PI) surface. The monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with oblique p-wave polarized UV light irradiated on PI surface at 5$\sim$60min. We obtained that the pretilt angles of the NLC is generated about $2.1^{\circ}$ with angle of incidence of $30^{\circ}$ at 20min. Also, the pretilt angle of NLC decreases with increasing the imidization temperature on PI surface.

  • In this study, we have investigated the relationship between the generation of pretilt angle and the polarization component in cells with UV light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. It was found that the generated pretilt angle is about $1.4^{\circ}$ with S-polarized UV light irradiation of $75^{\circ}$ on PI surface; it may be attributed to the asymmetry triangular of polymer surface with oblique S-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. Also, we measured that the generated pretilt angle is about $2.0^{\circ}$ with oblique P polarized UV light irradiation of $75^{\circ}$ on PI surface. Consequently, we suggest that the generated pretilt angle of the NLC is attributed to the interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surface with oblique polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface.
