  • "Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)" is published in 1613 in Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty, and reprinted many times in Korea, China and Japan. After publication of Donguibogam, Donguibogam became a base of Korean Medical development. Until now, Korean Oriental medical doctors make the most use of Donguibogam in clinical medicine. Donguibogam Sinhyeongjangbudo(身形藏府圖) represents Heojun(許浚)'s medical view, but there were not enough research about it. In oriental medical development, Taoism and Medicine interact each other and develop into higher grade. We searched Taoistic human body figures and medical ones which appeared before Donguibogam. We compared Donguibogam Sinhyeongjangbudo(身形藏府圖) with other figures and revealed the special features of it. Donguibogam Sinhyeongjangbudo is one of medical human body figures, but it has Taoistic features. Heojun(許浚) located Sinhyeongjangbudo at the opening of Donguibogam, and represented his medical point of view. Heojun laid emphasis on Taoistic training more than medical care in Donguibogam, and this thought is expressed in introduction of Donguibogam. Donguibogam Sinhyeongjangbudo shows Heojun(許浚)'s exact view.

  • Introduction: Up to now there has been no unified orthography of Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑) in English. Too manydifferent spellings on Donguibogam are seen in the articles on it. Therefore, we present a solution to the spelling problem of Donguibogam in this study. Discussion: To verify the problem of various spellings of Donguibogam we looked at over 54 articles that have spellings of Donguibogam published from 2000 to 2008, and compared those 29 different spellings with each other. To know the historical background of Donguibogam spelling, we looked over many translations that foreigners used, but we could just find fragmentary references to Donguibogam. We compared various spellings with the official orthography of the Korean government. We discussed the appropriateness of various spellings. There is no unified spelling in the DongUiBoGam center and in the conference articles of the Korean Society of Medical History, which recently celebrated the 400th year of DongUiBoGam publication. Conclusion: It is suggested that the proper orthography should be "Donguibogam: Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine". Hereafter all articles should follow this spelling without exception for more consistent study.

  • Objectives: This article aims to clarify the understanding and publication status of both The Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Donguibogam) and some of its recent research progress made in North Korea, as well as their influences upon the academic of Koryo medicine in North Korea. Methods: Analysis was carried out based on various reference books, dictionaries and Korean translation of Donguibogam (1964 Ver.) published by North Korea, as well as the North Korean quarterly medical journal, Koryo Medicine. Results: The academic of Koryo medicine in North Korea regards Donguibogam, a Korean medical classic as it was written by native Korean physicians and it became an important ground material for basic research and clinical study. Various terminologies used in the original version of Donguibogam were defined as unscientific and superstitious by North Korean academics, which were then subsequently removed from the Korean translation of Donguibogam (1964 Ver.) published by North Korea. Therefore, this version cannot be seen as a complete edition of Donguibogam. Conclusions: The Donguibogam is known as one of the 'three major books of Koryo medicine' in North Korea. As a treasure of East-Asian traditional medical classic, Donguibogam is expected to become the medium for a closer research collaboration between the North and South Koreas including China in the future.

  • Oriental medicine, since its origin in China, has had a long history extending over 2000 years. Today, it comprises several types of medicine predominately practiced in East Asia, including traditional Chinese, traditional Korean, and Kampo medicine. The distinctive medical system of traditional Korean medicine was established shortly after the publication of Donguibogam by Dr. Heo Jun in 1613. Donguibogam is highly acclaimed across East Asia; in 2009, in light of its historical medical value, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization registered the book on its cultural heritage list. Here, we review the historical medical value of Donguibogam. The findings confirm that Donguibogam developed a unique and independent form of traditional Korean medicine and innovatively reformed the disease classification system. Moreover, Donguibogam emphasized the importance of disease prevention and medical pragmatism. This book also accelerated the development of folk medicine. Owing to its historical medical value, Donguibogam is now considered the 'bible' of Oriental medicine. Its wide acceptance has contributed to the expansion of Korean medicine utilization among the general public. Donguibogam has also played an important role in the establishment of traditional Korean medicine as a universally valid and original form of medicine, independent of traditional Chinese medicine.

  • Objectives : This paper provides a general introduction of a person Seopa Lee-yidoo and the contents of his medical text, Uigamsanjeonyogyul. The paper then investigates how this text summarized and recomposed Donguibogam. Methods : The paper first reviews the activities and academic leanings of Lee-yidoo, the author of Uigamsanjeonyogyul, as described in his book Seopa-munjip. Furthermore, the paper compares Donguibogam and Uigamsanjeonyogyul's process of summarizing Donguibogam. Based on this the paper divides these comparisons and introduces examples. Results : When the overall composition, formation, and the original contents of Uigamsanjeonyogyul were compared with the texts of Donguibogam, it was discovered that the former wholly accepted the composition of the latter but made bold summarizations. Meanwhile, Uigamsanjeonyogyul added a detailed list of contents at the beginning of the book, and its original contents provided integration, relocation, and detailed explanations of Donguibogam two sections. It gave changes to bogam's prescription configuration and explanations on the mechanism of diseases, and it also added a section for new prescriptions. Like this, Uigamsanjeonyogyul showed a great deal of knowledge regarding the clinical field. Conclusions : Uigamsanjeonyogyul which was published as a summary of Donguibogam, faithfully follows the texts of Donguibogam. At the same time, it provides summary, improvement, and rearrangement based on the author's academic leanings.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze vocabulary found in "Donguibogam", one of the medical books in mid-Chosun, through Corpus-based analysis, one of the text analysis methods. According to it, Donguibogam has total 871,000 words in it, and Chinese characters used in it are total 5,130. Among them, 2,430 characters form 99% of the entire text. The most frequently appearing 20 Chinese characters are mainly function words, and with this, we can see that "Donguibogam" is a book equipped with complete forms of sentences just like other books. Examining the chapters of "Donguibogam" by comparison, Remedies and Acupuncture indicated lower frequencies of function words than Internal Medicine, External Medicine, and Miscellaneous Diseases. "Yixuerumen (Introduction to Medicine)" which influenced "Donguibogam" very much has lower frequencies of function words than "Donguibogam" in its most frequently appearing words. This may be because "Yixuerumen" maintains the form of Chileonjeolgu (a quatrain with seven Chinese characters in each line with seven-word lines) and adds footnotes below it. Corpus-based analysis helps us to see the words mainly used by measuring their frequencies in the book of medicine. Therefore, this researcher suggests that the results of this analysis can be used for education of Chinese characters at the college of Korean Medicine.

  • Objectives : The characteristics of the Liver diagram in the Donguibogam were analyzed. Methods : The Liver diagram in the Donguibogam was compared with diagrams originating from the Mingtangzangfutu(明堂臟腑圖), diagram from before the Northern Song period, Liver diagrams from Daoist texts, etc., after which its characteristics were examined in relation to quoted texts within the Donguibogam. Results : The Liver diagram of the Donguibogam is very different from that of the Mingtangzangfutu(明堂臟腑圖) or Daoist texts in that the leaf veins and leafstalk have not been depicted. The diagram in the Donguibogam depicts the liver as having seven lobes and one body instead of eight lobes. The Donguibogam diagram does not originate from the Mingtangzangfutu(明堂臟腑圖) nor is it an imitation of Daoist texts. It seems to be a visual realization based on descriptions from quoted texts such as the Nanjing, Yixuerumen, and Suwen annotations by Wangbing. Conclusions : The Liver with seven lobes and one body as depicted in the Donguibogamis likely a transformed version based on textual descriptions rather than an imitation of the Mingtangzangfutu(明堂臟腑圖) of images in Daoist texts.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to compare the prescriptions used for insomnia in Uihagimmun and Donguibogam. Methods : In Uihagimmun, 17 prescriptions were selected. If there was a change in the medicinal material, the altered herbal medicine was indicated along with the prescription name. In Donguibogam, 14 prescriptions were selected. Each prescription was analyzed by dividing it into prescription composition, and herbal medicine. Medications constituting a prescription were classified according to the classification of Korean herbal medicines and arranged based on their frequency of appearance. Result : The causes of insomnia were classified mainly as exhaustion in Uihagimmun and as exhaustion, stress, low energy, aging and discomfort in Donguibogam. In Uihagimmun, numerous medicines were used to relieve fever, and in Donguibogam, the use of stabilizers increased. More warm medicines were used in Donguibogam than in Uihagimmun, and the taste trend was similar in each. Conclusions : The types of causes of insomnia increased more in Donguibogam than Uihagimmun. Accordingly, the two books showed differences in drug classification and properties of a medicine. However, in terms of taste and action of medicinal herbs, they showed similar patterns, and there was only a difference in the order of frequency.

  • The 「Shinhyeong(Body)」 chapter is one of the most important of the 『Donguibogam(Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine)』 and can be regarded as the outline of text as a whole. This research compares this chapter with the 「Yangseongmun(Nourishing the inner nature)」 chapter of 『Euibangyoochui(Classified Assemblage of Medical Prescriptions)』 and shows how the two books are related through these two chapters. This research shows that, relating to nutrition literature, the most frequently cited contents in 『Donguibogam』 「Shinhyeong」 from 『Euibangyoochui』 「Yangseongmun」 occurred through 「Qianjinfang(千金方)」(13 times) and 「Quxianhuorenxin(臞仙活人心)」(7 times). Meanwhile, only the contents related to internal training, such as 「Xiuzhenmijue(修眞秘訣)」(7 times) and 「Jindandacheng(金丹大成)」(7 times), were selected in 『Donguibogam』 「Shinhyeong」 from 『Euibangyoochui』 「Yangseongmun」. Through this study, it was found that all seven volumes of 『Euibangyoochui』 「Yangseongmun」 were cited in 『Donguibogam』 「Shinhyeong」, so it can be said that 『Donguibogam』 「Shinhyeong」 was greatly influenced by 『Euibangyoochui』 「Yangseongmun」. We hope this research will serve as the basis for future research on the relationship between 『Donguibogam』 and 『Euibangyoochui』.
