Relationship between Preharvest Factors and the Incidence of Storage Disorders in 'Fuji' Apples during CA Storage

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest factors on fruit quality and the incidence of storage disorders in 'Fuji' apple during CA storage. Incidence of storage disorders varied, depending on the growing regions, field conditions, and altitude of the orchards. Results indicated that fruit maturity may play a crucial role in the incidence and severity of flesh browning and watercore. The incidence of these storage disorders increased with fruit maturity until 180 days after full bloom (DAFB). In addition, occurrence of watercore was correlated with the incidence of flesh browning during CA storage. The incidence of flesh browning was positively correlated with the sum of the diurnal temperature range from September through October and amount of precipitation from August to October in 1996-1999 growing years. These results suggested that 'Fuji' apple should be harvested no later than 180 DAFB because the late harvested fruits were prone to development of watercore which was correlated with the incidence of flesh browing during CA storage in Korea.

  • The Fuji variety of apple, introduced in Japan, has excellent storage quality and good taste, such that it is the most commonly cultivated apple variety in Gunwi County, North Gyeongsang Province, Korean Peninsula. Accurate prediction of harvest maturity allows farmers to more efficiently manage their farm in important aspects such as working time, fruit storage, market shipment, and labor distribution. Temperature is one of the most important factors that determine plant growth, development, and yield. This paper reports on the beta distribution (function) model that can be used to simulate the the phenological response of plants to temperature. The beta function, commonly used as a skewed probability density in statistics, was introduced to estimate apple harvest maturity as a function of temperature in this study. The model parameters were daily maximum temperature, daily optimum temperature, and maximum growth rate. They were estimated from the input data of daily maximum and minimum temperature and apple harvest maturity. The difference in observed and predicted maturity day from 2009 to 2012, with optimal parameters, was from two days earlier to one day later.

Comparison of the Effects of Early and Conventional Defoliation on Fruit Growth, Quality and Skin Color Development in 'Fuji' Apples

  • We compared the quality of 'Fuji' apples (Malus ${\times}$ domestica) from trees whose leaves were not removed (no artificial defoliation; NAD) with apples from trees that underwent early defoliation (ED, treated in mid September and early October) and conventional defoliation (CD, treated in early and mid October). The experiment was conducted in three consecutive years using 15-year-old 'Fuji' apple grafted on Malus prunifolia. Fruits were harvested on November 7, 16 or 12 in 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively. Compared to NAD treatment, ED and CD treatment reduced the fresh weight by 4.7% and 0.6%, respectively. The soluble solids content of NAD apples ($14.4^{\circ}Brix$) was slightly higher than that of CD ($14.1^{\circ}Brix$) and ED ($14.0^{\circ}Brix$) apples. Soluble sugar content, flesh firmness, water-core index, and titratable acidity were not affected by defoliation treatment regardless of treatment timing. The skin blush index of NAD apples (2.3) was inferior to that of CD (3.3) and ED (3.4)- treated apples. Furthermore, artificial defoliation treatments increased skin redness ($a^*$) and yellowness ($b^*$) and significantly improved the degree of skin blush compared to NAD fruits.

  • In this study, the wear characteristics of five different dental composite resins cured by conventional halogen light and LED light sources were investigated. Five different dental composite resins of Surefil, Z100, Dyract AP, Fuji II LC and Compoglass were worn against a zirconia ceramic ball using a pin-on-disk type wear tester with 15N contact force in a reciprocal sliding motion of sliding distance of 10mm/cycle at 1Hz under the room temperature dry condition. The wear variations of dental composite resins were linearly increased as the number of cycles increased. It was observed that the wear resistances of these specimens were in the order of Dyract AP > Surefil > Compoglass > Z100 > Fuji II LC. On the morphological observations by SEM, the large crack formation on the sliding track of Fuji II LC specimen was the greatest among all resin composites. Dyract AP showed less wear with few surface damage. There is no significant difference in wear performance between conventional halogen light curing and light emitting diodes curing sources. It indicates that a light emitting diodes (LED) source can replace a halogen light source as curing unit for composite resin restorations.

기능성 MA필름을 이용한 '후지' 사과의 기호도 조사 (Customer Preferences for 'Fuji' Apples Stored Using Functional Modified Atmosphere Film)

  • 거창과 서울에 거주하는 소비자로 20대부터 60대까지 남녀 280명을 대상으로 MA 필름으로 포장한 포장구 사과와 포장하지 않은 대조구 사과의 신선함, 단맛, 신맛, 향미, 아삭거림, 씹힘성, 구매의사에 대한 기호도를 조사한 결과 20대에서 신선함, 아삭거림, 씹힘성과 구매의사에서 대조구보다 포장구의 기호도가 유의적으로 높게 나타났다. 30대는 신선함, 신맛, 향미, 구매의사에서 40대는 향에서, 50대에서는 단맛과 향에서만 대조구보다 포장구의 기호도가 유의적으로 높게 나타났다. 그리고 60대에서 신선함, 향미, 구매의사에서는 대조구보다 포장구의 기호도가 유의적으로 높게 나타난 반면, 단맛, 신맛, 아삭거림에서는 포장구보다 대조구의 기호도가 유의적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 모든 연령에서의 대조구와 포장구 사과의 기호도는 맛의 특성 중 신선함(p=0.0011), 향미(p=0.0002), 구매의사(p=0.0018)에서 유의적으로 포장구가 높게 나타났고, 단맛, 신맛, 아삭거림, 씹힘성에서는 기호도 차이가 나타나지 않았다.

도라지 수집종의 형태적 특성과 SSR마커에 의한 유연관계 분석 (Morphological Characteristics and Genetic Diversity Analysis of Platycodon grandiflorum (Jacq.) A. DC Determined Using SSR Markers)

  • Background : Plant breeding requires the collection of genetically diverse genetic resources. Studies on the characteristics of Platycodon grandiflorum resources have not been carried out so far. The present study was carried out to discriminate P. grandiflorum based on morphological characteristics and genetic diversity using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Methods and Results :We collected 11 P. grandiflorum cultivars: Maries II, Hakone double white, Hakone double blue, Fuji white, Fuji pink, Fuji blue, Astra white, Astra pink, Astra blue, Astra semi-double blue and Jangbaek. Analyses of the morphological characteristics of the collection were conducted for aerial parts (flower, stem and leaf) and underground parts (root). Next, the genetic diversity of all P. grandiflorum resources was analyzed using SSR markers employing the DNA fragment analysis method. We determined that the 11 P. grandiflorum cultivars analyzed could be classified by plant length, leaf number and root characteristic. Based on the genetic diversity analysis, these cultivars were classified into four distinct groups. Conclusions : These findings could be used for further research on cultivar development using molecular breeding techniques and for conservation of the genetic diversity of P. grandiflorum. Moreover, the markers could be used for genetic mapping of the plant and marker-assisted selection for crop breeding.

CA저장 중 후지 사과의 내부 기체농도에 의한 저장조건의 적합성 판단 (Suitability Judgment of Storage Conditions by Internal Gas Concentration of 'Fuji' Apples under CA Storage)

  • CA 저장 중 후지 사과의 내부 기체 농도에 의한 저장 조건의 적합성을 신속하게 판단하기 위한 지표를 얻기 위하여 과실 내부 에틸렌과 이산화탄소의 농도에 따른 과육경도, 적정산도 및 과피 녹색의 유지정도를 조사하였다. 저장 중 사과의 내부 에틸렌 농도가 10ppm 이하에서는 과육경도, 적정산도 및 과피의 녹색이 거의 손실되지 않았으나 약 10ppm 이상에서는 급격하게 손실되었다. 저장 중 사과의 내부 이산화탄소 농도는 낮을수록 높은 과육경도, 적정산도 및 과피의 녹색을 유지하였는데 특히 내부 이산화탄소 농도가 2% 이하인 사과에서 높은 품질특성을 유지하였다 따라서 후지 사과의 CA저장에 적합한 저장조건은 사과의 내부 에틸렌과 이산화탄소 농도를 각각 약 10 ppm과 약 2% 이하로 유지할 수 있는 조건으로 판단되고, 사과의 내부 에틸렌과 이산화탄소 농도는 저장조건의 적합성을 판단하는 지표로 사용 가능하였다.

굴 껍데기에서 개미산으로 추출한 칼슘화합물과 활성제의 수관살포가 사과 '후지' 과실의 칼슘농도, 과피 형태 및 품질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Tree-spray of Calcium Formate Compound Extracted from Oyster Shell and Active Agent on the Calcium Concentration, Fruit Skin Shape, and Quality of 'Fuji' Apple Fruit)

  • 본 연구는 굴 껍데기로 제조한 개미산 칼슘화합물에 몇 가지 활성제를 첨가한 용액 수관살포가 사과 '후지' 과실의 칼슘농도, 과점의 발육 및 품질에 미치는 영향을 구명코자 실시하였다. 굴 껍데기로부터 추출한 칼슘 화합물(Os-CaF, $52.4mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$)을 수관살포하였을 때 조직으로의 칼슘전이 효과는 무처리에 비하여 잎, 과피 및 과육에서 현저한 증가를 보였다. 그리고 Os-CaF에 활성제를 첨가하여 살포하였을 때 '후지' 과실의 칼슘함량은 증가되었다. 특히, 잎에서는 ascorbic acid, polyvinyl alcohol을, 과피에서는 Ag-colloidal, polyvinyl alcohol을, 과육에서는 ascorbic acid, Ag-colloidal, polyvinyl alcohol을 첨가한 칼슘화합물이 칼슘 흡수량을 현저히 증가시켰다. 칼슘화합물의 농도 및 활성제 종류에 따른 과실품질(과중, 경도, 가용성고형물, 산 함량, 과피색)은 차이가 없었다.
