Research in the area of equine artificial insemination (AI) has led to its increased application in field trials. However, procedures for equine semen collection, cooling and freezing of semen and artificial insemination need further improvement. In experiment 1, we investigated the percentage of total motility (TM) and progressive motility (PM) of sperms at after-collection, cooled-diluted, cooled-transported or frozen-thawed semen. In experiment 2, mares were inseminated with either cooled-diluted, cooled-transported or frozen-thawed semen. In experiment 3, we examined the effect of buffer (skim-milk extender), which was infused into the uterus at the time of AI with frozen-thawed semen. In experiment 4, we compared AI pregnancy rates for mares ovulating spontaneously versus after treatment with hCG. In experiment 1, the average percentage of TM was decreased from 75.3% to 14.4% at the stage of after-collection to frozen-thawed semen (p<0.05). The average percentage of PM was 58.2% and 59.6% at after-collection and cooled-diluted, but it was significantly increased 71.7% after frozen-thawed (p<0.05). In experiment 2, the pregnancy rates after AI using cooled-diluted, cooled-transported and frozen-thawed semen were 60%, 50% and 37.5%, respectively, and similar among treatments. In experiment 3, the pregnancy rate of mares infused with buffer at AI was 40% which was higher than that with no buffer (10%). In experiment 4, the pregnancy rates of mares were similar between ovulated spontaneously (25%) and ovulated with hCG (50%). The results suggest that equine semen that has been cooled-diluted, cooled-transported or frozen can be successfully used to establish AI, pregnancy and foal production. Also, the pregnancy rates after AI can be increased by infusing buffer into the uterus at AI or by inducing ovulation with hCG, but further study is need.
This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from frozen Mandoo and pizza in 1998. A total 72 samples were examined and USDA, FDA and modified cold enrichment methods were used for the detection of Listeria spp. Overall prevalence of L. monocytogenes in frozen foods was 9.7% and L. monocytogenes was isolated from 11.1% of frozen Mandoo and 5.6% of frozen pizza. The highest detection rate of Listeria spp. in frozen Mandoo was found at USDA method and the serotype of L. monocytogenes isolates was 4. Isolated L. monocytogenes was confirmed by PCR method with Hly 1 and 2 as primers. It would be necessary to develop more rapid and specific method to isolate and confirm L. monocytogenes from foods because USDA and PCR methods used in this study took 3-4 days. D value of L. monocytogenes isolate in tryptic soy broth was 49.2 sec at $60^{\circ}C$ and 8.8 sec $at\;65^{\circ}C$, and D value of L. monocytogenes in foods with high distribution rate of Listeria spp. would be necessary to evaluate for the safe use of frozen foods.
Long-term storage technology was developed to extend shelf-life of citron (Citrus junos). Changes in quality characteristics of blanched and frozen citron peels (type A, without blanching for control; type B, blanched at $95^{\circ}C$ for 2 min; type C, blanched at $95^{\circ}C$ for 2 min, sugar added; type D, blanched at $95^{\circ}C$ for 5 min) during frozen storage were evaluated. Citron jam was prepared using frozen citron sample B, which showed the highest quality characteristics during storage, and high quality characteristics, such as yield and overall acceptability, were obtained when using 40% frozen citron, 41% sugar, 18.56% glutinous starch syrup, 0.39% pectin, and 0.05% citric acid. During storage of both blanched and frozen citron peels and citron jam made of frozen citron peel, changes in characteristics such as pH, total acids, soluble solids, and browning, were lower than those of control. Sensory evaluation for sourness, sweetness, and overall acceptability of citron jam made with frozen citron peel during storage showed higher values than those of control.
Two techniques were compared to test their effectiveness of frozen shoulder. The study was 20 cases of frozen shoulder who were treated at the department of physical therapy at Kum ma clinic during 6 months from 1 July, 1994 to 30 December, 1994. The treatment methods were application Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) and General Exercise(Pendulum exercise, Scratch exercise, Overhead pully, Shoulder wheel). The results obtained from these cases were as follows; 1. The subjects were 8(40 %) males and 12(60 %) females. The largest group was $50{\sim}59$ years of age 8 persons(40 %). 2. The majority of patients came for physical treatment within $7{\sim}10$ months after onset of shoulder pain(10 presons or 50 %) and 11 months after(4 persons or 20 %). 3. PNF cases recovered in average of 23 days and G - E cases 32 days. Also, the PNF method showed the best results in treatment of frozen shoulder better than the G-E.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the renditions to maintain good post-thaw motility and viability of canine spermatozoa when the semen was frozen using methanol. The semen from two male dogs which had been proven to be fertile in the previous one year was treated with different compositions of semen diluent and was frozen at different freezing temperatures, When canine semen was frozen at-2$0^{\circ}C$, -6$0^{\circ}C$, or -8$0^{\circ}C$, the spermatozoa frozen and stored at -2$0^{\circ}C$ showed very low post-thaw motility and viability from day 2 to 7 and showed no viability since day 15 after freezing. The spermatozoa frozen and stored at -6$0^{\circ}C$ or -8$0^{\circ}C$ showed higher post-thaw motility and viability on day 2, 1, 15 and 30 after freezing than that frozen and stored at-2$0^{\circ}C$(p<0.01), with no difference between two groups. Among different composition groups of the semen diluents of control(tris + egg yolk + glycerol), egg yolk-free, 히ycerol-free, and tris-free, Prior to freezing, the egg yolk-free diluent showed significantly love. motility and viability than the other diluents(p<0.05). On each thawing day (from day 2 to 15 after freezing), control group showed considerably higher motility and viability than the other groups(p<0.01). The canine spermatozoa frozen and stored at -6$0^{\circ}C$ and -8$0^{\circ}C$ showed gradual decrease of motility from day 2 to 30 after freezing and the spermatozoa of these two groups thawed on day 30 showed considerably love. motility than those thawed on day 2 after freezing, respectively(p<0.01). These results indicate that the freezing temperature of either -6$0^{\circ}C$ or -8$0^{\circ}C$ can be applicable to the freezing method using methanol and also all of the components of the semen diluent including cryoprotectant, buffer and cold-shock buffer are very important to maintain motility and viability of canine spermatozoa in the freezing and thawing procedure.

PURPOSES: According to accident statistics for road built in 2004, the ratio of accidents on frozen roads to normal roads is 0.9%, whereas the fatality ratio is 2.7%. The risk of accidents on frozen roads is very high. Measures taken every year to prevent traffic accidents of frozen roads in the winter season are still insufficient. Additionally, measures have been established mainly on rural roads. Therefore, for urban roads, analyses and measures to prevent accidents are lacking. In this study, data on accidents on frozen roads was used to search for the causes behind these accidents and measures to reduce accidents have been recommended. METHODS: In this study, collected data from the TAMS (Traffic Accident Management System), which were collected by the Seoul National Police Agency was used. The data were divided into vehicle, people, and condition of road. The analytical model used here was the Logistic Regression Model, which is frequently used for traffic safety and accident analysis. This study uses the odds ratio analysis to search for variables related to frozen road traffic accidents in each category. A total of 18 out of 47 variables were found to be the causes of accidents. RESULTS: From the results of the comparative analysis of 18 variables, the category of the condition of the road was found to be the most critical. Contrary to expectations, more accidents occurred in clear weather than in other conditions. Accidents on bridges occurred frequently, and its odds ratio was the highest compared with other road types. When BPT is operated, the probability of accidents on frozen roads is lower than in general conditions, and accidents occurred frequently on roads with less than four lanes. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the results of this study, suggestions for reducing the risk of future domestic road accidents in freezing conditions are indicated as follows. First, it is necessary to perform a technical review of the urban road traffic accidents caused by frozen roads. Second, it is necessary to establish criteria for the study of the road environment based on the major causes of road accidents on frozen roads. Third, improvements in urban road environmental factors should be made.
Objectives : 1. Clinical trial for the efficacy evaluation of Korean acupuncture techniques in treating frozen shoulder. 2. Development of the standard clinical guidelines of the acupuncture treatment for the frozen shoulder. 3. Development of the new clinical protocol for the acupuncture treatments. 4. Verification of the hypothesis that treating at both the remote and the nearby acupoints according to the meridian theory is more effective than treating at only the nearby acupoints. Methods : 1. Research designed as Single blind, Randomized, Sham acupuncture controlled clinical Trial. 2. Assignment of 86 patients to one of three groups treated at nearby acupoints(group A), remote & nearby acupoints(group B), and sham points(group C) respectively. 3. Trial conducted at KIOM CRC of Dunsan oriental medical hospital, Daejeon Univ. 4. Estimation of the recovery rate of the frozen shoulder in subjects aged over 40. 5. Efficacy evaluation using VAS, SPADI, ROM and Improvement rate. Results : 1. There was no significant difference in VAS among the three groups. 2. Pain related scores in SPADI of the group B were significantly lower than those of the group A. 3. There was no significant difference in disability related scores of SPADI among the three groups. 4. External rotation of upper arm in the group B was significantly improved in comparison with that in the group C. 5. Abduction of upper arm in group A was improved with weak statistical significance in comparison with that in the group C. Conclusion : Acupuncture at both the remote and the nearby acupoints according to the meridian theory is effective to improve external rotation of frozen shoulder, and acupuncture at the nearby acupoints is effective to improve adduction of frozen shoulder. However it is not clear that acupuncture treatment at both the remote and the nearby acupoints according to the meridian theory is more effective than treating at only the nearby acupoints in the treatment of frozen shoulder. Since our study was a short term trial, a long term trial for a more precise evaluation of acupuncture treatment for frozen shoulder will be needed in the future.
Effect of freezing of soybean and addition of mugwort on the flavor development and the changes of chemical compositions in Chungkookjang was investigated. The changes in the amount of amino-type N, the activities of ${\alpha}-amylase$ and protease, and the content of volatile compounds were determined during aging of Chungkookjang. During ripening, a little higher protease activity was detected in Chungkookjang made of frozen soybean than in that made of non-frozen soybean. However, the profile of ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity of Chungkookjang made of frozen soybean was very similar to that of Chungkookjang made of non-frozen soybean. The amount of amino-type N increased gradually with the ripening period and decreased after 21 days of ripening. The amount of amino-type N was slightly higher in Chungkookjang made of frozen soybean than in that made of non-frozen soybean. Addition of mugwort had little effect on the enzyme activities and the amino-type N content. The mugwort added in Chungkookjang reduced the production of cis-3-hexenol which is responsible for the unpleasant odor, and freezing of soybean enhanced the production of 2, 6-dimethyl pyrazine which is contribute to the taste. According to sensory evaluation, flavor was the highest after the 14 days of ripening and addition of mugwort increased significantly the flavor in both Chungkookjang prepared with frozen soybean and Chungkookjang with non-frozen soybean. However, the effect of freezing of soybean on the flavor was not significant.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of freezing and supplementation of molasses (M), lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and LAB+enzyme mixture on chemical and nutritional composition of sunflower silage (SF). Sunflower crops were harvested (at about $29.2%{\pm}1.2%$ dry matter) and half of fresh sunflower was ensiled alone and half was frozen (F) at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Silage additives were admixed into frozen SF material. All samples were ensiled in glass jars with six replicates for 90 days. The treatments were as follows: i) positive control (non-frozen and no additives, NF), ii) negative control (frozen, no additives, F), iii) F+5% molasses (FM), iv) F+LAB (1.5 g/tons, Lactobacillus plantarum and Enterococcus faecium, FLAB); v) F+LAB+enzyme (2 g/tons Lactobacillus plantarum and Enterococcus faecium and cellulase and amylase enzymes, FLEN). Freezing silage increased dry matter, crude ash, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent lignin. The organic matter, total digestible nutrient, non-fiber carbohydrate, metabolizable energy and in vitro dry matter digestibility were negatively influenced by freezing treatments (p<0.05). In conclusion, freezing sunflower plants prior to ensiling may negatively affect silage quality, while molasses supplementation improved some quality traits of frozen silage. Lactic acid bacteria and LAB+enzyme inoculations did not effectively compensate the negative impacts of freezing on sunflower silage.
This study was carried out to establish an effective system for embryo transfer techniques by analyzing several factors affecting in-vivo embryo transfer in Korean cattle Embryos were transferred into a toral of 301 recipients. The results obtained in studies on the factors affecting pregnancy rate after embryo transfer by condition of transfer time were as follows ; 1. The pregnancy rate by the seasons of transferred fresh and frozen embryos were not different, but the pregnancy rate was slightly higher in summer(80.8%). 2. The pregnancy rate by the days of embryo transfer after estrus were not different when fresh embryos were transferred, but the pregnancy rate was highest at 8 days when frozen embryos were transferred(P<0.01, 40.0%). 3. The pregnancy rate at estrus synchronization was remarkably higher with PGF$_2$$\alpha$ treated than natural (P<0.05, 70.4%, 43.4%). 4. The pragnancy rate by the degree of estrus synchronization was best when the estrus was synchronized in both fresh and frozen embryos (83.3% and 29.7%, respectively), but the pregnancy rate was not different among $\pm$2 days. But the pregnancy rate of frozen embryos were slightly higher when the recipients exhibited estrus earlier than donors.
