  • Studies were carried out to determine the effect of sulfur dioxide on leaf injury and yield of ten soybean cultivars. Plants were fumigated with 2.0 ppm of $SO_2$ for 4 or 8 h in a closed-top field chamber. In the comparison of foliar injury, Paldalkong and Eunhakong were more susceptible to $SO_2$ than Bogwangkong, Jangsukong, and Jangkeungkong. Correlations between chlorophyll contents, peroxidase activity, and stomatal resistance of leaves and foliar susceptibility were insignificant. However, significant correlations $(r=-0.611^{\ast})$ were found between superoxide dismutase activity and foliar injury rates. Dry weight, number of pods and total grains were significantly reduced by $SO_2$ fumigation but plant height, number of nods and weight of 100 grains were not affected. Yield reduction rates were higher in Eunhakong and Paldalkong than in Bogwangkong and Jangkeungkong. A liniar relationship was found between foliar injury rate and the percent crop loss with a significant coefficient of b=-1.17 in the susceptible cultivar of Paldalkong, but Bogwangkong, insusceptible cultivar, showed lower value of -0.165.

  • This study was designed to investigate changes in germination characteristics and color as well as the content of isoflavones of Eunhakong germinated under dark conditions. The wet weight of Enhakong was increased as germination progressed. It reached $299.7{\pm}15.0%$ at 60 h after the beginning of sprouting. The relative dry weight was consistently decreased as germination progressed, and it reached $65.8{\pm}8.2%$ at 60 h after the beginning of sprouting. The length of sprout was rapidly increased at the latter stage compared to the beginning of germination. Most soybean seeds were successfully germinated at 60 h after beginning of sprouting. The L value was considerably increased at the early stage of germination and it reached $63.4{\pm}0.7$ at 60 h. The a value was rapidly increased at the beginning of germination and decreased thereafter. The b value was increased at the beginning of germination and did not changed thereafter. It was confirmed that the total isoflavone content, in which the m-genistin was highest followed by daidzin, and than slightly decreased.

  • Drainage is needed to run off excessive water stress during the rainy season for soybean cultivation in the converted upland from paddy field. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of planting dates and drainage methods on growth and yield of sprout soybeans in the converted upland from paddy field. The stem and root growth at flowering stage showed no difference by drainage method but plant height, number of nodes and branches, and fresh weight of stem and root were much greater as planting date delayed. Seed yield was correlated positively with fresh weight of stem and root, and T/R ratio at the flowering stage, respectively. Lodging degree was not different by drainage method but was higher in planting at June 16 than May 15. Number of pods and 100 seed weight were not different by drainage method and 100 seed weight was heavy in Eunhakong, light in Kwangankong as planting date delayed. Higher seed yield was observed in surface drainage than open ditched drainage. Yield performance of Eunhakong was good in late planting, while that of Kwangankong was in early planting.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sowing date on soybean-sprout growth characters and for improving cultural techniques to produce high quality soybean-sprout. Six sprout-soybean cultivars were planted on three sowing dates in 2000 and 2001. The growth of hypocotyl in soybean sprouts was accelerated at higher temperature and the differences among cultivars became greater at later culture days. The longest of hypocotyl and root lengths of soybean sprouts was obtained from July 5 sowing, followed by May 25 and June 15 sowing. Doremikong and Hannamkong had the thickest and the thinness hypocotyls, respectively. Total length of soybean-sprouts was longer in seeds harvested from later sowing, respectively. Eunhakong produced the longest soybean-sprouts, while Tawonkong produced the shortest. Percentage of rotten seed and imperfectly germinated seed harvested at later sowing was lower. Somyeongkong and Tawonkong showed the highest and the lowest percentages of rotten seeds, respectively, while Pungsannamulkong and Hannamkong showed the lowest and the highest percentages of imperfectly germinated seeds. The soybean-sprouts yields were higher in seeds harvested in 2001 and later sowing. Although Eunhakong and Doremikong showed higher soybean-sprout yield, Pungsannamulkong and Somyeongkong showed stable soybean-sprout yield regardless of the sowing dates.

  • Decay during soybean sprout culture detracts their quality as well as increases their production costs. This study was done to determine the effects of acetic and propionic acids on growth and morphological characters of the sprouts. The soybean seeds of 3 cultivars (cv. Eunhakong, Pungsannamulkong and Orialtae) imbibed for 2 minutes at their different concentrations (0, 0.1 and 0.2%) were soaked for 6 hours in 4 ppm BA solution after the first 5.5 hour water imbibition and 0.5 hour aeration, and cultured at $20^{\circ}C$. On the 6th day, harvested soybean sprouts were classified into 4 categories on the base of hypocotyl length;>7cm, 4 to 7cm,<4cm and not germinated, and their morphological characters, fresh weights, lesion spots on cotyledons were measured or analyzed. The stronger concentration the higher rate of longer than 4cm although there was no significant difference between the two acids. Pungsannamulkong showed the longest hypocotyls but Eunhakong did the thickest ones, and Orialtae did the greatest total fresh weight, in which all the characters were not influenced by the two acids and their concentrations. Lesion spots on the cotyledons were equal to the two acids although less in their treatments than in no treatment. Utilization of propionic acid was more desirable Dan acetic acid through their treatment cost analysis.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the information of varietal development using wild soybean through investigation of variation and heredity of major agronomic characters in $F_2$ generation of interspecific cross between Glycine max and G. soja. In segregating populations of two crosses, all characters observed except 100-seed weight showed transgressive segregation. Days to flowering showed normal distribution; mean days to flowering in $F_1$, and $F_2$ was approximately mean of parent. Mean of $F_1$ for 100-seed weight was 6.2g and 5.7g for Eunhakong/KLG10084 and Sohaegnamulkong/KLG10084, respectively, which were somewhat skewed distribution to small seeded parents. Mean seed yield of $F_2$ was about mean of two parents. Degree of vine was 6.4 and 5.7 in $F_1$ for two crosses but it was 6.0 in $F_2$ for Eonbakong/KLG10084, which revealed the degree of vine as partial dominance while 4.6 for Sobaegnamulkong/KLG10084, somewhat different results from the previous cross. Broad-sense heritability($h^2B$) for plant height, days to flowering, pods per plant, seed yield, and degree of vine was comparatively high and narrow-sense heritability($h^2B$) for 100-seed weight which is the moot important character in the development of small seed-size sprout soybean was 52.3% and 65.6% for Eunhakong/KLG10084 and Sohaegnamulkong/KLG10084, respectively, which indicated that selection for the character in early generation was possible.

  • We analyzed the isoflavone content of domestic soybeans during steaming, boiling, fermentation, germinating cultivation, fermentation, and soybean curd production. The isoflavone content of the beans was reduced by steaming and boiling, and overall reductions ranging from 16.0 to 65.0% of initial isoflavone values were detected. After 4 days of germinating cultivation, the total isoflavones of Eunhakong increased from 1,341 to $2,017\;{\mu}g/g$ and the total isoflavones of Guinunikong increased from 1,284 to $1,535\;{\mu}g/g$. The isoflavone content of the vinegar beans produced from Hwangkeumkong and Black No.1 increased from 1,877 to $1,956\;{\mu}g/g$, and from 885 to $1,956\;{\mu}g/g$ after 8 days of immersion in 4% acetic acid, respectively. During soybean curd production, significant amounts of isoflavones were lost in the whey (30-31 %) and soybean curd residue (15-20%). Only 37.4% of the isoflavones present in the original soybeans remained in the soybean curd with the hot extraction method, and 50.7% of them with the cold extraction method. Soybean curd prepared with whole soybean method, however, retained 80.7% of the initial isoflavones.

  • Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) resistance of Korean recommended soybeans was evaluated naturally and by mechanical inoculation in Suwon. Based on the differential reaction of forty-four soybean genotypes tested to nine different SMV strains, soybeans were classified into twenty-four groups. Myeongjunamulkong and Ilpumgeom-jeongkong showed a high degree of resistance to nine SMV strains, having no symptom. The other cultivars produced various reactions according to inoculation of each SMV strain: symptomless, mosaic or systemic necrosis. Only five cultivars such as Kwangankong, Eunhakong, Tawonkong, Namhaekong, Sobaegnamulkong were totally susceptible to every strain. There was variation in disease incidence. Soybeans, having the highest levels of resistance to G5H and G7H in the greenhouse, showed the lowest levels of SMV incidence in the field of Suwon. Myeong-junamulkong, Ilpumgeomjeongkong, Soyangkong, Pungsannamulkong, Sodamkong, Jangmikong, Geomjeong-kong2, Pureunkong, Sinpaldalkong2, Duyoukong, and Geumgangkong were fairly resistant to SMV. And SMV incidence of Taekwangkong, Saealkong and Baegunkong was over 45% with symptom of bud necrosis. And soybeans, highly resistant to SMV in the field and the greenhouse, were mainly derived from Jangyeobkong and Hwang-keumkong resistant to G1-G7.

  • This study was conducted with two objectives ; one was to select the suitable soybean cultivars for cultivation in paddy field and the other was to establish the environment-friendly rotational cropping system of soybean instead of rice in paddy field. In order to evaluate growth adaptation and yields, Eve soybean cultivars were cultivated in Yeoncheon, Keonggi province, with two cultivation methods such as level row and high ridge. Growth of the top plants, such as stem length, number of branches, diameter of stem, were higher in high ridge than in level row, however, the differences among the cultivars were bigger than those between the cultivation methods. Dry weight of top plant was significantly different among the cultivars during whole growth stages, however, it was higher in level row than in high ridge at V5 stage while it became higher in high ridge as growth progressed. Roots were more developed in high ridge than in level row during whole growth stages. T/R ratio in level row was higher than that in high ridge. During whole growth stages, significant differences were observed among the cultivars in growth and yields in each cultivation method and yields of Eunhakong was the highest. In results, number of nodules and T/R ratio at V5 stage, number of pods at R2 stage, and number of seeds and T/R ratio at R5 stage had highly correlated with yields, respectively.

  • Barley straw is a good source of organic matter for next crop growth following barley. This study was conducted to investigate effects of barley straw application methods (application, removal, or incineration) on growth and yield in soybean cultivation following barley. A soybean variety, Eunhakong, was sown on 12 June with drill-seeder attached to tractor after tillage. Barley straw application resulted in increase in organic matter content compared to removal and incineration of barley straw, and soil physical properties such as water content and porosity, were improved by application and incineration of barley straw. Weed occurrence was deterred by 44% in barley straw application and by 31% in barley straw incineration compared with removal of barley straw. Number and dry weight of soybean nodules were move abundant in barley straw application than the other treatments at 4 and R2 stages. Barley straw application had less for dry weight than barley straw removal but greater than incineration of barley straw about 30 days after seeding. However barley straw application caused greater top dry weight 90 days after seeding. Root dry weight was not affected by barley straw application method at all growth stage. There're no significant differences in soybean yield among barley straw application methods.
