  • In this paper we analyzed the electromagnetic behavior of high $-T_{c}$ superconductor under the quench state using finite element method. Poisson equation was used in finite element analysis as a governing equation and was solved using algebra equation using Gallerkin method. We first investigate d the electromagnetic behavior of U-type superconductor. Finally we applied our analysis techniques to 5.5 kVA meander-line superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) which are currently developed by many power-system researcher in the world. Meshes of 14,600 elements were used in analysis of this SFCL. Analysis results show that the distribution of current density was concentrated to inner curvature in meander-line type-superconductors and maximum current density 14.61 $A/\m^2$ and also maximum Joule heat was 6,420 W/㎥. We concluded that this meander line-type SFCL was not pertinet fur uniform electromagnetic field distribution.n.

  • The fault current limiting characteristics of the separated and the integrated three-phase flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) were analyzed. The three-phase flux-lock type SFCL consisted of three flux-lock reactors and three $high-T_c$ superconducting (HTSC) elements. In the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL, three flux-lock reactors are connected on the same iron core. On the other hand, three flux-lock reactors of the separated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL are connected on three separated iron cores. The integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL showed the different fault current limiting characteristics from the separated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL that the fault phase could affect the sound phase, which resulted in quench of the HTSC element in the sound phase. Through the computer simulation applying numerical analysis for its three-phase equivalent circuit, the fault current limiting characteristics of the separated and the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCLs according to the ground fault types were compared.

  • Recent development in the field of RE-Ba-Cu-O (REBCO, RE: Y or rare earth elements) bulk high-Tc superconductors (HTS) is reviewed in the present paper. After the fatal weak link problem of sintered REBCO superconductors has been overcome by melt processing, this field has been greatly advanced during last ten years. The critical current density $J_c$ at 77 K has been enhanced by introducing effective flux pinning sites into the $REBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (RE123) superconducting matrix. Large melt-textured REBCO bulk crystals have been fabricated with the TSMG(top-seeded melt growth) technique. Mechanical properties of REBCO bulks have been improved by using the Ag additive or epoxy resin. Real bulk applications such as current lead, fault current limiter, flywheel energy storage system, magnetic field source, magnetic separation system, and etc., surely come true near future.

  • Effects of $BaCO_3$ purity on the superconducting properties of top seeded melt growth (TSMG) processed $Y_{1+x}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y1+x, x=0.1 and 0.2) superconductors were investigated. $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) powder prepared using $BaCO_3$ with 99.75% purity and commercially available Y123 powder of 99.9% were used for the fabrication of single Y123 grain superconductors. $T_c$ values of the Y1+x samples prepared using low purity Y123 powder were slightly lower than those of the samples prepared using a high purity powder. In addition to the lower $T_c$, an anomalous peak effect in the intermediate magnetic fields was observed in Y1+x samples prepared using the low purity $BaCO_3$ powder. The slight decrease in $T_c$ and the anomalous peak effect are ascribed to the possible incorporation of a Y123 phase with impurity elements such as strontium and calcium included in the $BaCO_3$powder of 99.7%. The result suggests that the low purity $BaCO_3$ powder of a low price can be used as a raw power for the fabrication of single grain YBCO bulk superconductors.

  • In this paper, the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using double quench was suggested and its transient current limiting characteristics were analyzed. The suggested flux-lock type SFCL using double quench consists of two magnetically coupled windings and two $high-T_{c}$ superconducting (HTSC) elements connected in series with each winding. To analyze the transient current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL using double quench, the short-circuit tests according to the fault angles, which affect the transient component of the fault current right after the fault occurs, were executed. From the comparative analysis for the short-circuit tests at both $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ fault angles, the useful transient current limiting operations of the suggested flux-lock type SFCL through the double or the single quench occurrence were confirmed.

  • The operational characteristics of the integrated three-phase flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) were analyzed. The suggested three-phase SFCL consisted of a three-phase flux-lock reactor and three high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTSC) elements. The former has three windings wound on an iron core, each of which has the same turn's ratio between coil 1 and coil 2. The latter are connected in series with coil 2 of each phase. The integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL showed the operational characteristics that the fault phase could affect the sound phase, which resulted in quenching the HTSC element in the sound phase. Through the computer simulation applying numerical analysis for its three-phase equivalent circuit, the fault current limiting characteristics of the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL according to the ground fault types were compared.

  • The size of the superconducting domains and the critical current density inside these domains have to be enhanced for most of cryomagnetic applications of melt-textured YBCO bulks. To enlarge the size of the domains we studied the multi-seeding technique based on a well-established procedure for preparing high quality YBCO monoliths using self-made SmBCO seeds. The distance between the seeds was optimised as a result of the investigation of the effects of various seed distances on the characteristics of the grain boundary Junctions. The influences of a-b plane intersections and c-axis misalignments were researched. Thereby, a small range of tolerance of the misorientations between the seed crystals was found. Field mapping was applied to control the materials quality and the superconductor's grain structure was investigated using polarisation microscopy. YBCO function elements with iou. seeds in a line and an arrangement of making type (100)/(100) and (110)/(110) boundary junctions, respectively, were processed. The trapped field profile in both sample types shows single domain behaviour. To demonstrate the potential of the multi-seeding method a ring-shaped sample was processed by placing sixteen seeds in a way to make both (100)/(100) and (110)/(110) grain junctions at the same time. The results up to now are very promising to prepare large single domain melt-textured YBCO semi-finished products in complex shapes.
