  • In this paper, sol-gel-spin coated $Pb(ZrTi)O_3$ thin film with $ZrO_2$ buffer-layer and $PbTiO_3$ seed-layer was investigated for vibration MEMS energy harvester to scavenge power from ambient vibration via d33 piezoelectric mode. Piezoelectric thin film deposition techniques on insulating layer is the important key for $d_{33}$ mode of piezoelectric vibration energy harvester. $ZrO_2$ buff-layer was utilized as an insulating layer. $PbTIO_3$ seed-layer was applied as an inter-layer between PZT and $ZrO_2$ layer to improve the crystalline of PZT thin film. The fabricated PZT thin film had a remanent polarization of 5.3uC/$cm^2$ and the coercive field of 60kV/cm. The fabricated energy harvester using PZT thin film with PTO seed-layer generated 1.1uW of electrical power to $2.2M{\Omega}$ of load with $4.4V_{pvp}$ from vibration of 0.39g at 528Hz.

  • The fracture strength and fracture modes were studied in 3Y-TZP/NiNi bonding which change their interfacial structure with bonding condition. Average 4-point bending strength of 200 MPa to 400 MPa were achieved. The formation of Ti-oxide phase at the interface critically influenced the bonding strength and fracture mode. The fracture surface of Ti-oxide free interface contained multiphase in some case including ZrO2. From the result it was confirmed that in order to maximize the bonding strength crack deflection from interface to ceramic was required.

  • The grain-boundary microcracking materials in the system $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ -ZrTiO$_4$(ZAT) is influenced by the thermal expansion anisotropy. The range of ZAT compositions investigated had showed very low thermal expansions of 0.3~1.3$\times$10$^{-6}$ K loin compared to 8.29$\times$10$^{6}$ K of pure ZrTiO$_4$and 0.68$\times$10$^{6}$ K of polycrystalline $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ , respectively, compared with the theoretical thermal expansion coefficient for a single crystal of $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ , 9.70$\times$10$^{6}$ K. The low thermal expansion and microcraking temperature are apparently due to a combination of thermal contraction and expansion caused by the large thermal expansion anisotropy of the crystal a ies of the $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ phase.

  • The grain-boundary microcracking materials in the system A1$_2$Ti $O_{5}$ -ZrTi $O_4$(ZAT) is influenced by the thermal expansion anisotropy. The range of ZAT compositions investigated had showed very low thermal expansions of 0.3~1.3$\times$10$^{-6}$K compared to 8.29$\times$10$^{-6}$K of pure ZrTi $O_4$and 0.68$\times$10$^{-6}$K of polycrystalline A1$_2$Ti $O_{5}$ , respectively, compared with the theoretical thermal expansion coefficient for a single crystal of A1$_2$Ti $O_{5}$ , 9.70$\times$10$^{-6}$K. The low thermal expansion and microcraking temperature are apparently due to a combination of thermal contraction and expansion caused by the large thermal expansion anisotropy of the crystal axes of the A1$_2$Ti $O_{5}$ phase.

  • Investigations of crystal structure and phase transition of $Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ ceramics doped with A-site substitution impurity (La, Nd) or B-site substitution impurity (Sb, Nb) at 2 mol% concentration were carried out. X-ray diffraction patterns of impurities doped $Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ ceramics have been measured at pressures up to ~5 GPa with diamond anvil cell and synchrotron radiation. The patterns were obtained at room temperature using methanol-ethanol mixture as pressure-transmitting media. In order to refine the crystal structure, Rietveld analysis has been performed. The structures of impurities doped $Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ ceramics are tetragonal in space group P4mm at ambient pressure and are transformed into a cubic phase in space group Pm$\bar{3}$m as the pressure increases. In this study, when A-site substitution donor $La^{3+}$ or $Nd^{3+}$ ion was added to $Pb(Zr_{0.52}Ti_{0.48})O_3$ ceramics, the phase transition phenomena showed up at the pressure of 2.5~4.6 GPa, but when B-site substitution donor $Nb^{5+}$ or $Sb^{5+}$ ion was added to it, the phase transition appeared at relatively lower pressure of 1.7~2.6 GPa.

  • BaTiO3 ceramics were sintered on Al2O3, MgAl2O4, MgO and Mg-, Ca-, Y-stabilized zirconia setters. Then the influence of setters on the microstructure of BaTiO3 ceramics and the stability of setters were investigated by SEM, EDAX and XRD analyses. The microstructure of BaTiO3 ceramics sintered on Al2O3, MgAl2O4, MgO and Mg-PSZ showed large grain growth, but little grain growth on Ce-TZP(Tetragonal Zirconia Policrystal). Mg-PSZ(Partially Stabilized Zirconia), Ca-PSZ, Ce-TZP setters showed extensive phase transformation. Y-TZP and fused Y-SZ (Stabilized Zirconia) setters were stable. The liquid sintering aids of BaTiO3 ceramics accelerate mass transport. The reaction of SrTiO3 in BaTiO3 with ZrO2 resulted in the formation of SrZrO3.

  • The machinability of materials is an important factor in engineering applications. Many ceramic components that have complex shapes require machining, typically using diamond tools, which leads to high production cost. Machinable ceramics containing h-BN have recently been developed, but these materials are very expensive because of high cost of raw materials and machining. Therefore the development of low-cost machinable ceramics is desirable. In this study, mullite-$ZrO_2$ ceramics were prepared additions of $Al_2TiO_5$. $ZrSiO_4$, $Al_2O_3$, and $Al_2TiO_5$ powders mixed at various molar ratios with sintering at 1400, 1500, and $1600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Phase formation and microstructure of the sintered ceramics were observed by XRD and SEM, respectively. The machinability of each specimen was tested using the micro-hole machining method. The machinability results show that the ceramics sintered at temperatures over $1500^{\circ}C$ can be used as good low-cost machinable mullite-$ZrO_2-Al_2TiO_5$ ceramics.
