Resistance distribution in thin film type SFCL elements of different shunt layer thickness was investigated. The 300 nm thick film of 2 inch diameter was coated with a gold layer and patterned into 2 mm wide meander lines. The shunt layer thickness was varied by ion milling the shunt layer with Ar ions, and also by having the shunt layer grown in different thickness. The SFCL element was subjected to simulated AC fault current for measurements. It was immersed in liquid nitrogenduring the experiment. The resistance distribution was not affected by the shunt layer thickness at applied voltages that brought the temperature of the elements to similar values. This result could be explained with the concept of heat transfer from the film to the surroundings. The resistance distribution was independent of the shunt layer thickness because thick sapphire substrates of high thermal conductivity dominated the thermal conductance of the elements.
[ $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ ] films have been prepared on $LaAlO_3$ (100) single-crystal substrates by a metalorganic deposition using dichloroacetate precursors (DCA-MOD). Calcination conditions were varied in order to optimize the microstructure and the superconducting properties of YBCO film. Coated films were calcined at various temperatures ranging from $400{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ in flowing humid oxygen atmosphere. Ramping rate to calcination tempertures was $2.22^{\circ}C/min$. Conversion heat treatment was performed at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in flowing Ar gas containing 1000 ppm oxygen with a humidity of 9.45%. Observations of surface and cross sectional SEM microstructure showed that the particle size in the calcined film increased in the range of 100-200 nm with heating rate and the calcination temperature. SEM EDS analysis showed that 13 a/o of chlorine was contained in the calcined film. It was also observed that the porosity increased with the heating rate and temperature. Porous microstructure was developed when YBCO films were prepared using porous calcined film. Dense microstructure and high $J_c$ over $1\;MA/cm^2$ was obtained when calcination was carried out at the temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $2.22^{\circ}C/min$.
In this parer, by means of adding nonsuperconductive phase sliver into YBCO matrix, the superconductivity of Melted Texture Growth (MTG) YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$\_$7-x/ was improved remarkably. In order to eliminate the crack inthe YBCO and the weak linkin the grain boundary, Ag contents from 2wt% to 18Wt% were doped in the YBCO It was found that J$\_$c/ of YBCO increase with the increasing Ag content till 14 wt% over 14wt% of Ag content, the Jc tends to stable . The grain size of YBCO became fine when Ag was added in the YBCO and X-ray diffraction showed that the YBCO crystal prepared by the above technique had (001) orientation and growing plane of YBCO was a-b plane. Using Bens medel, the J$\_$c/ was calculated and the best result was J$\_$c/ 76000A$\textrm{cm}^2$(77K, 100Gs).
We have analyzed operating characteristics of hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the parallel connection of secondary windings with $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ (YBCO) films. The turn ratio between the primary and secondary windings of each reactor was 63:21. Hybrid-type SFCL using a transformer with parallel reactors could reduce the unbalanced quench caused by differences of the critical current density between YBCO films. We found that hybrid-type SFCL having parallel connection induced simultaneous quench between the superconducting elements. The quench-starting point at this time was almost same. When the applied voltage was 200V, the limiting current in the hybrid-type SFCL with a serial connection was lowered to 34 percent than that in the SFCL with a parallel connection. In the meantime, when the voltage generated in the superconducting elements was the same, the current value in the parallel connection was 60 percent less than in the serial connection. The voltage generated in the primary winding also showed the similar behavior. In conclusion, we found that the fault current was limited more effectively in the SFCL with the serial connection but the power burden of the superconducting elements was reduced in the parallel connection.
We investigated the operational characteristics of the hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the serial and parallel connections of secondary circuits. The hybrid-type SFCL consists of a transformer, which has a primary winding and several secondary windings with $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ films connected in series and parallel. In order to increase the capacity of the SFCL, the serial connection between each current limiting unit is necessary. The hybrid-type SFCL with the serial connection in secondary circuits could show superior characteristics than those of the parallel connections in the current limiting and quench time. The resistances generated in the superconducting units were also lowered at the parallel connections. We confirmed that the parallel connection reduced the power burden of each superconducting unit under the same conditions because of the simultaneous quenching between superconducting units.
We have analyzed operating characteristics of transformer-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the serial or parallel connections of secondary coils with $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ (YBCO) thin films. The turn ratio between the primary and secondary coils was 63:21. Transformer-type SFCL using a transformer with secondary winding of serial or parallel coils could reduce the unbalanced quench caused by differences of the critical current density between YBCO thin films. We found that transformer-type SFCL having serial or parallel connections induced simultaneous quench between the superconducting units. The limiting current in the transformer-type SFCL with a parallel connection was lowered to 30 % compared to the SFCL with a serial connection. In the meantime, when the currents generated in the superconducting units were similar, the voltage value in the parallel connection was 60 % as low as that in the serial connection. However, the voltage generated in the primary winding was some higher. In conclusion, we found that transformer-type SFCL with parallel connection of secondary coils was more effective in fault current limiting characteristics and in the reduction of the consumption power for superconducting units compared to those of the transformer-type SFCL with serial connection of secondary coils.
High $J_c\;YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ superconducting films have been fabricated $LaAlO_3(100)$ substrate by MOD method using dichloroacetic acid(DCA) as chelating solvent for preparing precursor solution. Heating rate was varied in order to optimize the calcination heat treatment condition in DCA-MOD method. Coated films were calcined at lower temperature up to $500^{\circ}C$ in flowing humid oxygen atmosphere. The heating rate was calcined from $13.3^{\circ}C/min\;to\;0.28^{\circ}C/min$. Conversion heat treatment was performed $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in flowing Ar gas containing 1000 ppm oxygen with a humidity of 9.45%. Surface and cross sectional SEM microstructures showed that particle sizes were increased with heating rate at a calcination step. The amount of pores was increased with heating rate in the calcined films. Dense microstructure and sharp texture were developed in an YBCO films after conversion heat treatment. A high critical current density (Jc) of $1.26MA/cm^2$ (@77 K and self-field) was obtained for the YBCO film which was prepared with a heating rate of $0.28^{\circ}C/min$.
Bi/CNT composite and resin/CNT were chosen to improve the mechanical properties of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$(YBCO) superconductor. In order to elucidate the effects of Bi/CNT composite and resin/CNT in YBCO superconductors, melt texture superconductor were impregnated by mixed compound of Bi and CNT into the artificial holes parallel to the c-axis, which were drilled on the YBCO superconductor. Various amount of Bi/CNT and resin/CNT were impregnated to YBCO superconductor with different holes diameters. Typical artificial holes diameters were 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm respectively. Result of three-point bending test measurement, the bending strength with resin/CNT impregnation was improved up to 59.64 MPa as compared with 50.79 MPa of resin/CNT free bulk. Resin/CNT impregnation has been found to be one of the effective ways in improving the mechanical properties of bulk superconductor.
We investigated the operating characteristics of the hybrid-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) according to the inductance of secondary windings. The hybrid type SFCL consists of a transformer that has a primary winding and a secondary winding with serially connected $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ (YBCO) films. The resistive-type SFCL has difficulty when it comes to raising the capacity of the SFCL due to slight differences of critical current densities between units and structure of the SFCL. The hybrid-type SFCL with closed-loop is able to achieve capacity increase through the electrical isolation and reduction of the inductance of the secondary winding with a superconducting element of the same critical current. On the other hand, the current limiting characteristics were nearly identical in the hybrid-type SFCL with open-loop compared to closed-loop, but quench time was longer than the hybrid-type SFCL with closed-loop. We confirmed that the capacity of the SFCL was increased effectively by the reduced inductance of the secondary winding. In addition, the power burden of the system also could be lowered by reducing the inductance of secondary winding.
