Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been widely investigated as a next-generation solar cell because of their simple structure and low manufacturing cost. The $TiO_2$ film with thickness of $8{\sim}10{\mu}m$, which consists of nanoparticles, acts as both a scaffold with a high surface-to-volume ratio for the dye loading and a pathway to remove the electrons. However, charge carriers have to move across many particle boundaries by a hopping mechanism. So, one dimensional nanostructures such as nanotubes, nanorods and nanowires should improve charge carrier transportation by providing a facile direct electron pathway and lowering the diffusion resistance. However, the efficiencies of DSSCs using one dimensional nanostructures are less than the $TiO_2$ nanoparticle-based DSSCs. In this work, the patterned $TiO_2$ film with thickness of $3{\mu}m$ was deposited using photolithography process to decrease of electron pathway and increase of surface area and transmittance of $TiO_2$ films. Properties of the patterned $TiO_2$ films were investigated by various analysis method such as X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and UV-visible spectrophotometer.

$TiO_2$ composites with seven different carbon materials (activated carbons, graphite, carbon fibers, single-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphene oxides, and reduced graphene oxides) that are virgin or treated with nitric acid are prepared through an evaporation method. The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared samples are evaluated in terms of $H_2$ production from aqueous methanol solution (photo-catalytic reduction: PCR) and degradation of aqueous pollutants (phenol, methylene blue, and rhodamine B) (photocatalytic oxidation: PCO) under AM 1.5-light irradiation. Despite varying effects depending on the kinds of carbon materials and their surface treatment, composites typically show enhanced PCR activity with maximum 50 times higher $H_2$ production as compared to bare $TiO_2$. Conversely, the carbon-induced synergy effects on PCO activities are insignificant for all three substrates. Colorimetric quantification of hydroxyl radicals supports the absence of carbon effects. However, platinum deposition on the binary composites displays the enhanced effect on both PCR and PCO reactions. These differing effects of carbon materials on PCR and PCO reactions of $TiO_2$ are discussed in terms of physicochemical properties of carbon materials, coupling states of $TiO_2$/carbon composites, interfacial charge transfers. Various surface characterizations of composites (UV-Vis diffuse reflectance, SEM, FTIR, surface area, electrical conductivity, and photoluminescence) are performed to gain insight on their photocatalytic redox behaviors.

In this study, we describe a simple selective etching method that produces noncurling, freestanding, large-area, aligned $TiO_2$ nanotube (NT) with doubly ends opened. The novel selective etching process only removed the thin 2nd bottom layer from the physically and chemically stable thick amorphous 1st top layer under thermal treatment at $250^{\circ}C$, yielding ordered doubly open-ended NT (DNT) that could be easily transferred to an FTO substrate for the fabrication of front-illuminated dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The DNT-DSCs yielded a higher PCE (8.6%) than was observed from $TiO_2$ nanoparticle (TNP)-based DSCs (7.3%), for comparable film thicknesses of $16{\mu}m$, despite of 20% decreased amount of dye. Intensity-modulated photocurrent and photovoltage spectroscopy (IMPS and IMVS, respectively) revealed that the DNT-DSCs exhibited electron lifetimes that were 10 times longer than those of TNP-DSCs, which contributed to high device performances.
In this work we report investigation results of enhanced visible light photocatalytic properties of CdS and CdSe sensitized $TiO_2$ nanotube heterostructures. Anodically grown ordered $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were sensitized with CdS and CdSe by using successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Photocatalytic measurements revealed that heterostructured samples show enhanced photocurrent density under the visible light illumination. Improved visible light performance of the heterostuctures was explained by lower band gap of the CdS and CdSe and their favorable conduction band positions relative to $TiO_2$. Moreover, due to the lower band gap of the CdSe (1.7 eV) compared to CdS (2.4 eV), both photocurrent density and photoconversion efficiency results showed superior activity.
A $TiO_2$/CNT nanohybrid photocatalyst is synthesized via sol-gel route, with titanium (IV) isopropoxide and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as the starting materials. The microstructures and phase constitution of the nanohybrid $TiO_2$/CNT (0.005wt%) samples after calcination at $450^{\circ}C$, $550^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ in air are compared with those of pure $TiO_2$ using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the nanohybrid is compared with that of pure $TiO_2$ with regard to the degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The $TiO_2$/CNT composite exhibits a fast grain growth and phase transformation during calcination. The nanocomposite shows enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation in comparison to pure $TiO_2$ owing to not only better adsorption capability of CNT but also effective electron transfer between $TiO_2$ and CNTs. However, the high calcination temperature of $650^{\circ}C$, regardless of addition of CNT, causes a decrease in photocatalytic activity because of grain growth and phase transformation to rutile. These results such as fast phase transformation to rutile and effective electron transfer are related to carbon doping into $TiO_2$.

Nanocarbon supported Fe/$TiO_2$ composite catalysts were prepared using CNTs (carbon nanotubes) and $C_{60}$ (fullerene) as nanocarbon sources by a modified sol-gel method. The Fe/$TiO_2$-nanocarbon composites were characterized by the BET surface area, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and UV-vis spectra. In comparison with non-nanocarbon doped Fe/$TiO_2$ composites, the nanocarbon supported Fe/$TiO_2$ composites had higher absorption ability with a larger specific surface area, and showed higher photocatalytic activity during the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. The reasons for the obvious increase of photocatalytic activity indicated that the photoactivity not only benefits from nanocarbon introduced, but also relates to the cooperative effect of the Fe as a dopant.

Modified titanate nanotubes (TNT) were tested for their adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from water solutions. They were obtained from the $TiO_2$ nanopowder using a standard alkaline hydrothermal method but in the stage of acid washing, when the titanate flakes begin to roll into nanotubes, magnetite nanoparticles were added. The $Fe_3O_4$ magnetic nanoparticles with diameter of around 2 nm and 12 nm were used in the tests. Significantly stronger adsorption of MB was observed when smaller nanoparticles were used compared to using larger nanoparticles and compared to the case of unmodified nanotubes. It was shown that the increased adsorption of MB is associated with a more negative value of ${\zeta}$-potential for titanates modified by the ultra-small nanoparticles. In the adsorption experiment, pH 7 was selected. These results may prove to be of great importance in the case of potential applications corresponding to the use of such material for wastewater purification.
In this study, two series of CNT/$TiO_2$ electrodes were prepared. The decrease of surface area compared with that of the pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) indicated the blocking of micropores on the surface of the CNTs; was further supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and field emission SEM (FE-SEM) observations. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites contained a mix of anatase and rutile forms of $TiO_2$ particles when the precursor was $TiO_2$ powder, whereas when the precursor was Ti ($OC_4H_7$) (TNB), the composites contained only the typical single and clear anatase $TiO_2$ particles. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) spectra showed the presence of C, O and Ti peaks for all samples. It was found that catalytic decomposition of methylene blue (MB) solution could be attributed to synthetic effects between the $TiO_2$ photocatalysis and electro-assisted CNTs network, and that photoelectrocatalytic oxidation increased with an increase of CNT composition. It was also found that the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation efficiency for MB is higher than that of photocatalytic oxidation. Moreover, the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites catalyst prepared by the impregnation method demonstrates higher photoelectrocatalytic activity than the mechanical mixture with the same CNT content.
Titanium hydroxide precipitate was obtained by the reaction of 0.5M TiOCl2 and 5M NH4OH solutions, then anatase TiO2 powder with nanotubes was prepared by the digestion of the heat-treated powder in 5M NaOH solution. Nanotube was formed for anatase TiO2 powder digested at 10$0^{\circ}C$ above, and the amount and length of nanotube increased with the digestion temperature. In the case of the powder digested at 15$0^{\circ}C$ for 12h, the formed nanotube was 100~150nm in length, 10~20 nm in diameter, and 2nm in width of the walls on both sides of the nanotube. The powder digested at 15$0^{\circ}C$ for 12h showed the highest specific surface area of 270$m^2$/g.
