Nanotechnology is an upcoming technology that can provide solution for combating pollution by controlling shape and size of materials at the nanoscale. This review provides comprehensive information regarding the role of nanotechnology in pollution control at concrete structures. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are a good item for concrete structures for diminishing the air polluting affect by gasses of exhaust. In this article, the mixture rule is presented for the effect of nanoparticles in environmental pollution reduction in concrete structures. The compressive strength, elastic modulus and reduction of steel bars in the concrete structures are studied. The Results show that TiO2 nanoparticles have significant effect on the reduction of environmental pollution and increase of stiffness in the concrete structures. In addition, the nanoparticles can reduce the use of steel bars in the concrete structure.
The possibility of eye exposure for workers participating in manufacturing of nanoparticles or consumers using products containing nanoparticles has been reported, but toxicity studies on the eye are scarce. In this study, cytotoxicity of five nanoparticles including silver, ceria, silica, titanium and zinc were tested using Statens Seruminstitut Rabbit Cornea (SIRC) cells. When cells were treated with nanoparticles with concentrations of $1-100{\mu}g/mL$ for 24 hr, zinc oxide nanoparticles showed higher toxicity to cornea cells. $LC_{50}$ of zinc oxide nanoparticles was less than $25{\mu}g/mL$ but those of other nanoparticles could not be calculated in this test, which means more than $100{\mu}g/mL$. Generation of reactive oxygen species was observed, and expression of apoptosis related biomarkers including Bax and Bcl-2 were changed after treatment of zinc oxide nanoparticles, while no other significant toxicity-related changes were observed in cornea cells treated with Ag, $CeO_2$, $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ nanoparticles.
This work concentrated on the effect of different laser beams on the microstructure and dielectric properties of $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles at different calcinations times during the gelling preparation step. The nanoparticles were prepared by the sol-gel method. A green (1000 mW, 532 nm) and red laser beam (500 mW, 808 nm), were applied vertically at the center of stirring raw materials. The samples were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4, and 6 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that samples prepared under the green laser have the highest purity. The FT-IR spectra showed that the stretching and bending vibrations of TiO bond without any other bonds, which are compatible to the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. Samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scan electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-Visible spectrophotometer. Characterization showed the samples prepared under the green laser to have the highest particle size (~ 50 nm) and transparency for all sintering durations. Laser beam effects on electrical characterization were studied. BT nanoparticles prepared under the green laser show the higher dielectric constant, which was found to increase with sintering temperature.

Ultrathin oxide encapsulated metal-oxide hybrid nanocatalysts have been fabricated by a soft chemical and facile route. First, SiO2 nanoparticles of 25~30 nm size have been synthesized by modified Stobber's method followed by amine functionalization. Metal nanoparticles (Ru, Rh, Pt) capped with polymer/citrate have been deposited on functionalized SiO2 and finally an ultrathin layer of TiO2 coated on surface which prevents sintering and provides high thermal stability while maximizing the metal-oxide interface for higher catalytic activity. TEM studies confirmed that 2.5 nm sized metal nanoparticles are well dispersed and distributed throughout the surface of 25 nm SiO2 nanoparticles with a 3-4 nm TiO2 ultrathin layer. The metal nanoparticles are still well exposed to outer surface, being enabled for surface characterization and catalytic activity. Even after calcination at $600^{\circ}C$, the structure and morphology of hybrid nanocatalysts remain intact confirm the high thermal stability. XPS spectra of hybrid nanocatalyst suggest the metallic states as well as their corresponding oxide states. The catalytic activity has been evaluated for high temperature CO oxidation reaction as well as photocatalytic H2 generation under solar simulation. The design of hybrid structure, high thermal stability, and better exposure of metal active sites are the key parameters for the high catalytic activity. The maximization of metal-TiO2 interface interaction has the great role in photocatalytic H2 production.

For many large-scale applications of high-temperature superconducting materials, large critical current density($J_c$) in high applied magnetic fields are required. A number of methods have been reported to introduce artificial pinning centers(APCs) in $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$(YBCO) films for enhancement of their $J_c$. In this work, we investigated electric characteristic of YBCO films on $SrTiO_3$ (100) substrates whose surfaces were modified by the introduction of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). Au nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on STO substrates with one of typical solution techniques, self assembled monolayer. After heating the STO substrates with Au nanoparticles, the size of Au nanoparticles was around 29~32 nm in height and 41~49 nm in diameter. XRD diffraction patterns taken on the YBCO film with Au nanoparticles show the c-axis orientation. The measured $T_c$ of YBCO /AuNPs films was around 89K and the $J_c$ was 0.75 MA/$cm^2$ at 65 K and 1 T.

Lactose is a reducing disaccharide consisting of two different monosaccharides such as galactose and glucose. The hydrogenation of lactose to lactitol is a formidable challenge because it is a complex process and several side products are formed. In this work, we synthesized Ru-Ni bimetallic nanohybrids as efficient catalysts for selective lactose hydrogenation to give selective lactitol. Ru-Ni bimetallic nanohybrids with $Ru-NiO_x$ (x = 1, 5, and 10 wt%) are prepared by impregnating Ru and Ni salts precursors with $TiO_2$ used as support material. Ru-Ni bimetallic nanohybrids (represented as $5Ru-5NiO/TiO_2$) catalyst is found to exhibit the remarkably high selectivity of lactitol (99.4%) and turnover frequency i.e. ($374h^{-1}$). In contrast, monometallic $Ru/TiO_2$ catalyst shows poor performance with ($TOF=251h^{-1}$). The detailed characterizations confirmed a strong interaction between Ru and NiO species, demonstrating a synergistic effect on the improvement on lactitol selectivity. The impregnation-reduction method for the preparation of bimetallic $Ru-NiO/TiO_2$ catalyst promoted Ru nanoparticles dispersed on NiO and intensified the interaction between Ru and NiO species. $Ru-NiO/TiO_2$ efficiently catalyzed the hydrogenation of lactose to lactitol with high yield/selectivity at almost complete conversion of lactose at $120^{\circ}C$ and 55 bar of hydrogen ($H_2$) pressure. Moreover, $Ru-NiO/TiO_2$ catalyst could also be easily recovered and reused up to four runs without notable change in original activity.
To improve the high charge carrier recombination rate and low visible light absorption of {001} facets exposed $TiO_2$ [$TiO_2(001)$] nanosheets, few-layered $MoS_2$ nanoparticles were loaded on the surfaces of $TiO_2(001)$ nanosheets by a simple photodeposition method. The photocatalytic activities towards Rhodamine B (RhB) were investigated. The results showed that the $MoS_2-TiO_2(001)$ nanocomposites exhibited much enhanced photocatalytic activities compared with the pure $TiO_2(001)$ nanosheets. At an optimal Mo/Ti molar ratio of 25%, the $MoS_2-TiO_2(001)$ nanocomposites displayed the highest photocatalytic activity, which took only 30 min to degrade 50 mL of RhB (50 mg/L). The active species in the degradation reaction were determined to be $h^+$ and $^{\bullet}OH$ according to the free radical trapping experiments. The reduced charge carrier recombination rate, enhanced visible light utilization and increased surface areas contributed to the enhanced photocatalytic performances of the 25% $MoS_2-TiO_2(001)$ nanocomposites.

In this study, the inverted structured electroluminescence (EL) devices were fabricated with double electron transport layers (ETLs). The conduction band minimum (CBM) of TiO2 NPs is lower than SnO2 NPs. Therefore, it is expected that inserting TiO2 NPs between the SnO2 layer and the emission layer (EML) will reduce the energy barrier and transport electrons smoothly. The quantum dot light emitting diodes (QLEDs) with double ETLs showed the enhanced emission characteristics than those with only SnO2 layer.

Application of photocatalytic nanoparticles has been recently gaining an increased attention as air purifying material for sustainable urban development. The present work reports the photocatalytic removal of gaseous phase nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) using $TiO_2$-coated zeolite to be applied as a filter media for the urban green infrastructure such as raingardens. The $TiO_2$-coated zeolite was synthesized by simple wet chemistry method and tested in a continuous-flow photo-reactor for its removal efficiency of $NO_x$ under different conditions of the weight percentage of $TiO_2$ coated on the zeolite, and gas retention time. The removal efficiency of $NO_x$ in general increased as the weight percentage of $TiO_2$ coated on the zeolite increased up to 15-20%. Greater than 90% of $NO_x$ was removed at a retention time of one minute using the $TiO_2$-coated zeolite ($TiO_2$ weight percentage = 20%). Overall, $TiO_2$-coated zeolite showed greater efficiency of $NO_x$ removal compared to $TiO_2$ powder probably by providing additional reaction sites from the porous structure of zeolite. It was presumed that the degradation of $NO_x$ is attributed to both the physical adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation that could simultaneously occur at the catalyst surface.

In this paper the effect of the structure, particle size, morphology of nanofibers and nanoparticles for the electrochemical characteristics of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was investigated. The $H_2Ti_2O_5{\cdot}H_2O$ synthesized in hydrothermal treatment from a NaOH treatment on $TiO_2$ by ion exchange processing with HCl solutions. After the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ nanofibers synthesized in hydrothermal treatment of $H_2Ti_2O_5{\cdot}H_2O$ and $LiOH{\cdot}H_2O$. The hydrogen titanate precursor prepared by ion exchange processing with 0.1~0.3M HCl solutions and the final products calcined at $350^{\circ}C{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ nanofibers showed well reversibility during the insertion and extraction of Li, good cycle performance, high capacity and low electrochemical reaction resistance than nanoparticles. also c-rate exhibited a discharge capacity of 172 mAh/g at 0.2C and 115mAh/g at 5C, which is the 77%, 67% of that obtained in the process charged, discharged at 0.2C.
