Evaluation on the Photodegradation Rate of NOx Using High Efficiency Visible-Light Responsive Photocatalysts (고효율 가시광 반응형 광촉매를 이용한 NOx의 광저감율 평가)

  • Titania is widely used as an effective photocatalyst for the photodegradation of environmental pollutants in air. In this study, novel N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were synthesized via sol-gel method and characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray diffractometer. N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were nano-sized with an average particle size of about 20 nm. The XRD pattern of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts showed both anatase and rutile phases. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of NO under UV and visible light irradiation at various parameters such as amount of photocatalyst, concentration of NO, and intensity of light. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was effective for the enhancement of the degradation of NO and higher than that of $TiO_2$ photocatlysts under UV and visible light irradiation.

Photocatalytic Performance of ZnS and TiO2 Supported on AC Under Visible Light Irradiation

  • AC and ZnS modified $TiO_2$ composites (AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$) were prepared using a sol-gel method. The composite obtained was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, and according to the UV-vis absorption spectra (UV-vis). XRD patterns of the composites showed that the AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$ composites contain a typical single and clear anatase phase. The surface properties as observed by SEM present the characterization of the texture of the AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$ composites, showing a homogenous composition in the particles showing the micro-surface structures and morphology of the composites. The EDX spectra of the elemental identification showed the presence of C and Ti with Zn and S peaks for the AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$ composite. UV-vis patterns of the composites showed that these composites had greater photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. A rhodamine B (Rh.B) solution under visible light irradiation was used to determine the photocatalytic activity. The degradation of Rh.B was determined using UV/Vis spectrophotometry. An increase in the photocatalytic activity was observed. From the photocatalytic results, the excellent activity of the Y-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composites for the degradation of methylene blue under visible irradiation could be attributed to an increase in the photo-absorption effect caused by the ZnS and to the cooperative effect of the AC.

  • The degradation efficiency of chlorophenolic compounds in $TiO_2/H_2O_2$ combined system was compared with that of in $TiO_2$ sole system. As a result, the addition of hydrogen peroxide in photocatalytic oxidation reaction greatly enhanced the degradation efficiency of chlorophenolic compounds due to the availability of the hydroxyl radical formed on the $TiO_2$ surface. The hydrogen peroxide under UV illumination produces hydroxyl radicals that appear to be another source of hydroxyl radical formation. These results indicated the $TiO_2/H_2O_2$ combined system shows higher degradation efficiency than the $TiO_2$ sole system. Compared to another oxidation reaction, hydrogen peroxide assisted photocatalytic oxidation is more promising in practical aspect.

The Effect of Photocatalysis using $TiO_2$ and UV for COD Degradation of Wastewater in Linerboard Mill

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of photocatalysis using $TiO_2$ and UV applied for the COD reduction of wastewater in linerboard mill. Trials were done to obtain the optimum addition amounts of $TiO_2$ and $H_2O_2$ to the wastewater and find an appropriate pH condition for photocatalysis on $TiO_2$ for degrading COD. The photocatalytic reaction was applied to the wastewater collected after secondary activated sludge treatment in WWTP of linerboard mill. The optimum application of photocatalysis reaction was obtained under the addition conditions of 2 g/L of $TiO_2$ and 200 mg/L of $H_2O_2$ at pH 3.0, respectively. The removal efficiency of $SCOD_{Cr}$ by photocatalytic treatment was 86.4 % and higher than Fenton treatment in which removal efficiency was 67.4 %. It was concluded that the photocatalytic process using $TiO_2$ and UV could be applied to the wastewater treatment in linerboard mill and also to the dramatic drop-off in NBDCOD load from wastewater of tertiary treatment in WWTP.

  • Nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ particles have been successfully prepared using titanium tetraisopropoxide as the Ti source and urea as the nitrogen source. As-prepared nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET) and ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) absorption spectra techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) has been carried out in both solar light (UV-vis) and the visible region (${\lambda}=420nm$). Nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ exhibits higher activity than the commercial $TiO_2$ photocalyst, particularly under visible-light irradiation because bandgap of nitrogen-doped $TiO_2$ becomes remarkably decreased.

  • 산업이 발달하면서 다양한 화학물질이 배출되고 이로 인하여 환경이 오염되고 있으며, 특히, 대부분의 유기 화합물은 대기오염에 많은 영향을 주는 물질로 알려져 있다. 최근 유기 화합물을 제거하기 위해서 UV와 가시광에서 반응하는 광촉매 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 밴드갭에 변화를 주는 doped $TiO_2$와 가시광에서 반응하는 조촉매를 이용하여 광촉매의 특성을 향상시키는 coupled $TiO_2$를 제조하였다. Doped $TiO_2$를 제조하기 위해서 비금속 물질인 질소(nitrogen)을 사용하였고, coupled $TiO_2$는 graphine oxide(GO)를 환원하여 $TiO_2$-RGO 촉매를 제조하였다. N-$TiO_2$$TiO_2$-RGO의 광학 특성을 평가하기 위해서 UV/Vis 분광광도계를 사용하였다. Methylene blue(MB)와 methyl orange(MO)가 분해되는 반응을 통해서 N-$TiO_2$$TiO_2$-RGO의 광촉매 특성을 평가하였다. 또한, MB와 MO 분해 테스트에 395 nm long pass filter를 이용하여 가시광에서의 광촉매 활성을 평가하였다.

Toulene Removal over the Water-suspended Sn-Incorporated $TiO_2$ Photocatalyst Prepared by Solvothermal Method (Solvothermal 법에 의해 제조된 Sn-$TiO_2$ 나노 반도체 촉매 상에서의 수중 부유 톨루엔 광분해 반응)

  • This study focuses on the removal of water-suspended toluene of a representative sick house compounds in a liquid photo-system using nanometer-sized Sn-incorporated $TiO_2$ which was synthesized by a solvothermal method. The characteristics of the synthesized Sn-$TiO_2$ were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). To estimate the photocatalytic activity of Sn-$TiO_2$, the photodegradation of water-suspended toluene was performed, and the remaining concentration was determined using UV-visible spectroscopy. The water-suspended toluene photodegradation over Sn-incorporated $TiO_2$ catalyst was better than that over pure $TiO_2$ (anatase). The water-suspended toluene of 500 ppm was perfectly decomposed within 300 minutes over 0.01 mol% Sn-$TiO_2$.

Preparation of $TiO_2$ thin films by coating-pyrolysis process of Ti-naphthenate (Ti-naphthenate의 코팅-열분해에 의한$TiO_2$ 박막의 제조)

  • $TiO_2$ thin films were prepared by coating and subsequent pyrolysis processes using Titanium-naphthenate as a raw material. $TiO_2$ thin films were made by spin-coating technique on the glass substrates, and heat treated at 45$0^{\circ}C$, The transmittance, refractive index, crystallinity and surface morphology of the $TiO_2$ thin films were measured by UV/Vis spec trophotometer, x-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. $TiO_2$thin films on the slide glass showed the trans mittance of 70-90% and refractive index of 2.6 at 420 nm. The results of XRD and SEM showed that the $TiO_2$ thin films exhibited the anatase phase and the thread-like surface morphology.

Photocatalytic effect for the pitch-coated TiO2 (Pitch 코팅된 TiO2에 대한 광촉매 효과)

  • Pitch-coated anatase $TiO_2$ typed was prepared by $CCl_4$ solvent mixing method with different mixing ratios. Since the carbon layers derived from pitch on the $TiO_2$ particles were porous, the pitch-coated $TiO_2$ sample series showed a good adsorptivity and photo decomposition activity. The BET surface area depends on the pitch contents, which was made by changing the mixing ratios of the pitch with the raw $TiO_2$. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the pitch-coated $TiO_2$ sample and pitch distributions on the surfaces for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene with pristine anatase peaks were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the pitch-coated $TiO_2$. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of pitchcoated $TiO_2$ with Uv/Vis spectra between absorbance and time could be attributed to the homogeneous coated pitch on the external surface by $CCl_4$ solvent method.

Low temperature UV-assisted rapid thermal processing of (Ba,Sr)$TiO_3$ thin films (저온에서 (Ba,Sr)$TiO_3$ 박막의 UV를 이용한 RTP에 관한 연구)

  • Chemically homogeneous $Ba_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}TiO_3$ (BST) sols were synthesized using barium acetate, strontium acetate, and titanium isoproxide as starting materials. BST thin films of thickness 340 nm were deposited on Pt/$TiO_2/SiO_2$/Si and alumina substrates using spin coating method. The technique used for the processing of these films was Ultraviolet (UV) sol-gel photoannealing, using phto-sensitivity precursor solutions and UV-assisted rapid thermal processing(UV-RTP). The crystallization behaviour of the BST sols and thin films was studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Variation of permittivity and dielectric loss were measured in LCR-meter, model HP 4394A.
