Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell structure nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by microwave hydrothermal method, and the effect of working temperature on sensitivity of Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell NPs for CO gas was investigated. The $SnO_2$ shell layer was consisted of $SnO_2$ primary particles with 4.5 nm diameter. The response of Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell NPs for CO gas was maximized at the working temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ while the sensitivity increased with decreasing the working temperature due to the low grain size effect of $SnO_2$ NPs on the response of CO gas.

Nanofibers(NFs), because of their high surface area and nanosized grains, have appropriate morphologies for use in chemiresistive-type sensors for gas detection applications. In this study, a highly sensitive and selective CO gas sensing material based on Au-decorated $SnO_2$ NFs was fabricated by electrospinning. $SnO_2$ NFs were synthesized by electrospinning and subsequently decorated with various amounts of Au nanoparticles(NPs) by sputtering; this was followed by thermal annealing. Different characterizations showed the successful formation of Au-decorated $SnO_2$ NFs. Gas sensing tests were performed on the fabricated sensors, which showed bell-shaped sensing behavior with respect to the amount of Au decoration. The best CO sensing performance, with a response of ~20 for 10 ppm CO, was obtained at an optimized amount of Au (2.6 at.%). The interplay between Au and $SnO_2$ in terms of the electronic and chemical sensitization by Au NPs is responsible for the great improvement in the CO sensing capability of pure $SnO_2$ NFs, suggesting that Au-decorated $SnO_2$ NFs can be a promising material for fabricating highly sensitive and selective chemiresistive-type CO gas sensors.
We report the effect of the fabric of the surface microstructure on the CO gas sensing properties of $SnO_2$ thin films deposited on self-assembled Au nanodots ($SnO_2$/Au) that were formed on $SiO_2/Si$ substrates. We characterized structural and morphological properties, comparing them to those of $SnO_2$ thin films deposited directly onto $SiO_2/Si$ substrates. We observed a significant enhancement of CO gas sensing properties in the $SnO_2$/Au gas sensors, specifically exhibiting a high maximum response at $200^{\circ}C$ and quite a low detection limit of 1 ppm level in dry air. In particular, the response of the $SnO_2/Au$ gas sensor was found to reach the maximum value of 32.5 at $200^{\circ}C$, which is roughly 27 times higher than the response (~1.2) of the $SnO_2$ gas sensor obtained at the same operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the $SnO_2/Au$ gas sensors displayed very fast response and recovery behaviors. The observed enhancement in the CO gas sensing properties of the $SnO_2/Au$ sensors is mainly ascribed to the formation of a nanostructured morphology in the active $SnO_2$ layer having a high specific surface-reaction area by the insertion of a nanodot form of Au nucleation layer.
The problems associated with the synthesis, characterization and application of $SnO_2$-Au nanocomposites for the optimization of conductometric gas sensors have been discussed in this report. Nanocomposites have been synthesized on the surface of $SnO_2$ films using successive ionic layer deposition(SILD) method. It has been shown that the proposed approach to surface modification of metal oxide films is an excellent method for the optimization of the operating characteristics of $SnO_2$-based gas sensors, being developed for the detection of reducing gases as well as ozone.
Highly-porous $SnO_2$thin films were prepared for recognizing and detecting of the inflammable gases, like butane, propane, LPG, carbon monoxide. To obtain sensing films, Sn, Pt/Sn, Au/Sn, and Pt,Au/Sn films were deposited employing a thermal evaporator for Sn film and a sputter for novel metals of Pt or/and Au. These films were annealed for 2 h at $700^{\circ}C$ to form $SnO_2$-based thin films. The films showed the tetragonal structure and also exhibited many defects and porosity, which could give high sensitivity to thin films. The thin films showed high sensitivity and reproductivity to the tested gases(butane, propane, LPG, and carbon monoxide) to even to low gas concentrations in range of workplace environmental standards. Especially, Pt/$SnO_2$film showed the highest sensitivity to butane, LPG, and carbon monoxide. And pure $SnO_2$ film manifested the highest sensitivity to propane. By using the sensing patterns from the films, we could reliably recognize the kinds and the quantities of the tested inflammable gases within the range of the threshold limit values(TLV) and the lower explosion limit(LEL) through the principal component analysis(PCA).
A coprecipitation method was used for preparing Ca and Pt doped $SnO_{2}$-based material. Crystallite size and specific surface area were investigated by TEM, XRD and BET analysis. $SnO_{2}(Ca)/Pt$ based thick film devices were prepared by a screen printing technique for hydrocarbon gas detecting. Then the electrical and sensing characteristics of devices were investigated. As Ca and Pt addition, the crystal growth of $SnO_{2}$ was suppressed during calcining and sintering, and the sensitivity of $SnO_{2}(Ca)/Pt$ thick film to gas was enhanced. Also any difference in the sensing properties has to be attributed to the Pt and Au electrode. For the 2000 ppm $CH_{4}$, the sensitivity of $SnO_{2}(Ca)/Pt$ thick film devices were about 83% at an operating temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.
We have employed Kelvin force microscopy (KFM) system to measure the potential change of a single SnO2 nanowire which had been synthesized on the Au thin film by a thermal process. By using the KFM probing technique, Rh coated conducting cantilever can approach a single SnO2 nanowire in nano scale and get the potential images with oscillating AC bias between Au electrode and cantilever. Also, during imaging the potential status, we controlled the concentration of oxygen in measuring chamber to change the ionosorption rate. From the results of such experiments, we verified that the surface potential as well as doping type of a single SnO2 nanowire could be changed by oxygen ionosorption.

Flip chip bonded LED packages possess lower thermal resistance than wire bonded LED packages because of short thermal path. In this study, thermal and bonding properties of flip chip bonded high brightness LED were evaluated for Au-Sn thermo-compression bonded LEDs and Sn-Ag-Cu reflow bonded LEDs. For the Au-Sn thermo-compression bonding, bonding pressure and bonding temperature were 50 N and 300oC, respectively. For the SAC solder reflow bonding, peak temperature was $255^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec. The shear strength of the Au-Sn thermo-compression joint was $3508.5gf/mm^2$ and that of the SAC reflow joint was 5798.5 gf/mm. After the shear test, the fracture occurred at the isolation layer in the LED chip for both Au-Sn and SAC joints. Thermal resistance of Au-Sn sample was lower than that of SAC bonded sample due to the void formation in the SAC solder.
This study was performed to analyze bond strength, the alterations of the interfaces between metal films which are populary used and considered to contribute to the chemical reaction with porcelain, according to constant ion- beam- mixing, and the relation between interfacial chemical reactions and bond strength in metal/porcelain specimens. For this study, three seperate metals : selected-gold, indium and tin were chosen ; each to be bonded to a seperate body porcelain. Bonding occurs when the metal is deposited to the body porcelain using a vacuum evaporator. The vacuum evaporator used $10^{-5}\sim10^{-6}$ Torr vacuum states for the evaporation of various metals (Au, Sn, In). Ion-beam-mixing of the porcelain/metal interfaces caused reactions when the Ar+ was implanted into thin films using a 80 KeV accelerator. These ion-beam-mixed specimens were then compared with an unmixed control group. An analysis of bond strength and ionic changes between the the metal and porcelain was performed by electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA) and scratch test. The finding led to the following conclusions : 1. Light microscopic views of the scratch test : The ion-beam-mixed Au/porcelain specimen showed narrower scratched streams than the unmixed specimen. However, the Sn/porcelain, In/porcelain specimens showed no differences in the two conditions. 2. Acoustic emissions in scratch tests : The ion-mixed Au/porcelain, In/porcelain specimens showed signals closer to the metal/porcelain interfaces than unmixed specimens. Conversely, the ion-mixed Sn/porcelain specimen showed more critical signals in superficial portions than unmixed specimens. 3. After ion- beam-mixing, the Au/porcelain specimen showed apparently increased bond strength, and the In/porcelain specimen showed very slightly increased bond strength. However, the Sn/porcelain specimen showed no differences between ion mixed specimen and the unmixed one. 4. ESCA analysis : The ion-beam-mixed Au/porcelain specimen showed a higher peak separated value (4.3eV) than that of the unmixed specimen(3.65eV), the ion-beam-mixed In/porcelain specimen showed a higher peak separated value (9.43eV) than that of the unmixed specimen(7.6eV) and the ion-beam-mixed Sn/porcelain specimen showed a higher peak separated value (8.79eV) than that of the unmixed specimen(8.5eV). 5. Interfacial changes were observed in the ion-mixed Au/porcelain, In/porcelain and Sn/porcelain specimens. Especially, significant interfacial changes were measured in the ion- mixed Sn/porcelain specimen. Tin dioxide(SnO2) and a combination of pure tin and tin dioxide (Sn+SnO2) were produced. 6. In the Au/porcelain specimen, the interfacial chemical reaction showed increased bond strength between gold and porcelain substrate. But, in the In/porcelain, Sn/porcelain specimens, interfacial chemical reactions did not affected the bond strength between metal and porcelain substrate. Especially, bonding strength on the ion mixed Sn/porcelain specimen showed the least amount of difference.
