  • In this paper, effect of catalytic configuration on the sensing properties of $SnO_2$ nanoparticle gas sensitive thick film was investigated. Two types of catalytic configuration, mono and binary, were made on the $SnO_2$ nanoparticle. In case of mono catalytic system, $3 wt\%$ Pd or Pt catalyst was doped onto the $SnO_2$ nanoparticle, respectively. In case of binary catalytic system, Pd and Pt was doped simultaneously with concentration ratio of 1:2 to 2:1 onto the $SnO_2$ nanoparticle. After doping, gas sensitive thick film was printed on alumina substrate and heat-treated at 450 to $600^{\circ}C$. Gas sensing properties was evaluated using 500 to 10,000 ppm $CH_4$ gas. As a result, gas sensitive thick film with binary catalytic system showed unstable phenomena that the gas sensitivity was changed according to aging time. In contrary, the mono catalytic system showed relatively stable phenomena despite of aging time. Especially, gas sensitive thick film doped with $3 wt\%$ Pt catalyst and heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ showed good sensing properties such as 0.57 of $R_{3500}/R_{1000}$ and very small variation within $3.5\%$ after aging for 5 hours, and response time was very short less than 20 seconds.

  • Indium tin oxide (In:$SnO_2$) nanoparticles were synthesized employing a sol-gel combustion method followed by annealing. The TG, XRD, XPS and SEM results of the precursor powders and calcinated In:$SnO_2$ nanoparticles were investigated. Crystal structures were examined by powder XRD, and those results show shaper intensity peak at $25.6^{\circ}$ ($2{\theta}$) of $SnO_2$ by increased annealing temperature. A particle morphology and size was examined by SEM, and the size of the nanoparticles was found to be in the range of 20~30nm. In:$SnO_2$ films could controlled by nanoparticle material at various annealing temperature. The sol-gel combustion method was offered simple and effective route for the synthesis of In:$SnO_2$ nanoparticles.

  • In this study, the H2S gas sensing characteristics were evaluated using surface-modified SnO2 microparticles by tip sonication. The surface-modified SnO2 microparticles were synthesized using the following sequential process. First, bare SnO2 microparticles were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Then, the surfaces of bare SnO2 microparticles were modified with Ti nanoparticles during tip sonication. The sensing characteristics of SnO2 microparticles modified with Ti were systematically investigated in the range of 100-300℃, compared with the bare SnO2 microparticles. In this study, we discuss in detail the improved H2S sensing characteristics of SnO2 microparticles via Ti nanoparticle modification.

  • Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell structure nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by microwave hydrothermal method, and the effect of working temperature on sensitivity of Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell NPs for CO gas was investigated. The $SnO_2$ shell layer was consisted of $SnO_2$ primary particles with 4.5 nm diameter. The response of Au/$SnO_2$ core-shell NPs for CO gas was maximized at the working temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ while the sensitivity increased with decreasing the working temperature due to the low grain size effect of $SnO_2$ NPs on the response of CO gas.

  • In this article, we present the effects of Ag doping and after-growth thermal annealing on the photoluminescence (PL) and thermoluminescence (TL) behaviors of $SnO_2$ nanoparticles. $SnO_2$ nanoparticles of 4-7 nm size range containing different Ag contents were synthesized by hydrothermal process. It has been observed that the after-growth thermal annealing process enhances the crystallite size and stabilizes the TL emissions of $SnO_2$ nanostructures. Incorporated Ag probably occupies the interstitial sites of the $SnO_2$ lattice, affecting drastically their emission behaviors on thermal annealing. Both the TL response and dose-linearity of the $SnO_2$ nanoparticles improve on 1.0% Ag doping, and subsequent thermal annealing. However, a higher Ag content causes the formation of Ag clusters, reducing both the TL and PL responses of the nanoparticles.

  • Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were uniformly functionalized with Pd nanoparticles via ${\gamma}$-ray radiolysis. The Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were fabricated through a selective growth method. The sensing properties of the Pd-functionalized $SnO_2$ nanowires were analyzed in terms of their response to $NO_2$ and CO gases. The response time and sensitivity of the sensors were significantly improved for $NO_2$ at lower temperatures by the Pd functionalization. The enhancement in the sensing properties is likely to be due to the spillover effect of the Pd nanoparticles.

  • Well-crystalline $SnO_2$ nanoparticles of 4-5 nm size with different In contents were synthesized by hydrothermal process at relatively low temperature and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), microRaman spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Indium incorporation in $SnO_2$ lattice is seen to cause a lattice expansion, increasing the average size of the nanoparticles. The fundamental phonon vibration modes of $SnO_2$ lattice suffer a broadening, and surface modes associated to particle size shift gradually with the increase of In content. Incorporation of In drastically enhances the PL emission of $SnO_2$ nanoparticles associated to deep electronic defect levels. Although In incorporation reduces the band gap energy of $SnO_2$ crystallites only marginally, it affects drastically their dye degradation behaviors under UV illumination. While the UV degradation of methylene blue (MB) by undoped $SnO_2$ nanoparticles occurs through the production of intermediate byproducts such as azure A, azure B, and azure C, direct mineralization of MB takes place for In-doped $SnO_2$ nanoparticles.
