연속다공질 SiC-Si3N4 복합체의 미세구조 및 기계적 특성 (Microstructure Control and Mechanical Properties of Continuously Porous SiC-Si3N4 Composites)

  • The microstructures and mechanical properties of continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$composites fabricated by multi-pass extrusion were investigated at different Si levels added. Si-powder with different weight percentages (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) was added to the SiC powder to make the raw mixture powders, with $6wt%Y_2O_3-2wt%Al_2O_3$ as sintering additives, carbon ($10-15{\mu}m$) as a pore-forming agent, ethylene vinyl acetate as a binder and stearic acid ($CH_3(CH_2)_{16}COOH$) as a lubricant. In the continuously porous $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composites, $Si_3N_4$ whiskers like the hairs of nostrils were frequently observed on the wall of the pores. In this study, the morphology of the $Si_3N_4$ whiskers was investigated with the silicon addition content. In the composites containing of 10 wt% Si, a large number of $Si_3N_4$ whiskers was found at the continuous pore regions. In the sample to which 15 wt% Si powder was added, maximum values of about 101 MPa bending strength and 57.5% relative density were obtained.

기상반응에 의한 SiC-${Si_3}{N_4}$복합 분말의 제조 및 결정화 (Synthesis and Crystallization of Fine SiC-${Si_3}{N_4}$Composite Powders by the Vapor Phase Reaction)

  • 본 연구에서는 기상 반응법을 이용하여 TMS(Tetramethylsilane:Si($CH_3$)$_4$)와 NH$_3$그리고 H$_2$의 혼합기체로부터 반응 온도 1000~120$0^{\circ}C$ 및 입력비(NH$_3$/Si($CH_3$)$_4$) 1~3의 조건에서 초미분의 SiC-Si$_3$N$_4$복합 분말을 합성하였다. 합성되어진 복합 분말들의 결정상의 변화와 평균 입경을 알아보기 위해 XRD와 TEM 분석을 행한 결과, 구형의 비정질 분말이 형성되었으며, 입자의 크기는 약 70~130nm이었다. 입자의 크기는 입력비에 관계없이 거의 일정하였으나 반응 온도가 증가함에 따라서 감소하였다. FT-IR과 EA 분석 결과, 합성되어진 분말은 Si, N, C, 그리고 H로 이루어진 화합물임을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 입력비가 다른 조건에서 합성되어진 분말을 $N_2$분위기 하에서 155$0^{\circ}C$로 2시간 열처리를 행한 결과, 낮은 입력비인 경우 $\beta$-SiC, $\alpha$-Si$_3$N$_4$$\beta$-Si$_3$N$_4$의 결정상들이 혼재하였으나, 높은 입력비인 경우는 결정화 후 $\alpha$-Si$_3$N$_4$상만이 존재하였다.

  • The Si3N4 composites reinforced with carbon-coated SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours to examine the effects of carbon-coated whiskers on the mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced Si3N4 composites. The flexural strength of the Si3N4 composites and Si3N4 monolith respectively. The weak interfacial bond between carbon-coated SiC whiskers and Si3N4 matrix which enhances the crack deflection and whisker pull-out could contribute to the improvement of mechanical properties of the composites.

  • In the present study, $Si_3N_4-SiC$ ceramic composites that contained up to 20 wt% of dispersed SiC particles were fabricated via hot-pressing with an oxynitride glass. The microstructure, the mechanical properties, and the cutting performance of resulting ceramic composites were investigated. By fixing the composition as $Si_3N_4-20$ wt% SiC, the effect of sintering time on the microstructure, the mechanical properties, and the cutting performance were also investigated. For machining of gray cast i개n, the tool life increases with increasing the amount of SiC content in the composites; The tool life also increased with increasing the sintering time. The tool life of the home-made cutting tools was very close to that of commercial $Si_3N_4$ cutting tool. The superior cutting performance of $Si_3N_4-SiC$ ceramic cutting tools suggests the possibility to be a new ceramic tool material.

  • The densifying behavior of ultrafine amorphous Si3N4 (about 20 nm)-$\beta$-SiC (about 40~80 nm) powders (O2 : 1.3~15wt%, 0$700^{\circ}C$ within 15 sec and then immediately cooled and held at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 min in N2 atmosphere without resorting to additives using a Xe image heating apparatus. Using an ultrafine pure Si3N4 powder with particle size less than 30nm, further more, mixed with an appropriate amount of $\beta$-SiC, was found to be advantageous to obtain uniform and homogeneous microstructure. In addition, ultrafine Si3N4 powders were also proved to be effective as sintering additive on densifying large sized Si3N4 powder compacts.

  • 소결조제로 2 wt % $Al_2O_3$와 6 wt% $Y_2O_3$를 첨가한 $Si_3N_4/20$ vol % SiC 초미립복합 재료의 고온가압소결 중의 미세구조 발현과정을 sintering interruption법으로 관찰하였다. 밀도는 $1500^{\circ}C$$1700^{\circ}C$ 사이에서 빠르게 증가하였으며, $1800^{\circ}C$ 에서 이론밀도에 가깝게 치밀화하였다. 질화규소의 상전이 속도는 $1700^{\circ}C$$1800^{\circ}C$에서 증가하였으며, 길게 자란 기지상결정립들이 나타났다. 작은 입경의 SiC는 치밀화속도와 기지상 상전이를 억제하는 효과를 보였다.

  • A nitrogenation of coal ash in the presence of carbon was carried out to examine the effects of reaction temperature, reaction time and carbon composition on the formation of AlN, SiC and Si3N4. Decreasing the particle size increased the formation of AlN and its maximum composition in the product was obtaiend under 1450~150$0^{\circ}C$, 2 hours of reaction time and about 30% of carbon addition(on the basis of sample weight). Compositions of SiC and Si3N4 were distributed to the opposite so that SiC showed a higher composition compared with Si3N4 at a lower temperature, a shorter reaction time and a greater carbon addition.

$\alpha$-질화규소 Whisker의 $\alpha$/$\beta$ 상변태 ($\alpha$ to $\beta$ Phase Transformation of $\alpha$-Si3N4 Whisker)

  • The $\alpha$ to $\beta$ phase transformation of $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker and related microstructural changes have been investigated. When only $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker was heat treated in the range 1650~175$0^{\circ}C$, the $\alpha$ to $\beta$ phase transformation occured. In this case, it eas suggested that the oxygen content in $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker affected the transformation behavior. Although $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker with Si was heat treated under the same condition, however, the variation of $\beta$- fraction had a similar tendency with heat treating time. Therfore, it was considered that the oxygen content in $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker affected the transformation behavior dominently rather than the content of added Si. The added $\beta$ phase did not affect the transformation behaviro of $\alpha$-Si3N4 whisker.

Fabrication and characterization of Copper/Silicon Nitride composites

  • Copper/silicon nitride ($Cu/Si_3N_4$) composites are fabricated by powder technology process. Copper is used as metal matrix and very fine $Si_3N_4$ particles (less than 1 micron) as reinforcement material. The investigated powder were used to prepare homogenous ($Cu/Si_3N_4$) composite mixtures with different $Si_3N_4$ weight percentage (2, 4, 6, 8 and10). The produced mixtures were cold pressed and sintered at different temperatures (850, 950, 1000, $1050^{\circ}C$). The microstructure and the chemical composition of the produced $Cu/Si_3N_4$ composites were investigated by (SEM) and XRD. It was observed that the $Si_3N_4$ particles were homogeneously distributed in the Cu matrix. The density, electrical conductivity and coefficient of thermal expansion of the produced $Cu/Si_3N_4$ composites were measured. The relative green density, sintered density, electrical conductivity as well as coefficient of thermal expansion were decreased by increasing the reinforcement phase ($Si_3N_4$) content in the copper matrix. It is also founded that the sintered density and electrical conductivity of the $Cu/Si_3N_4$ composites were increased by increase the sintering temperature.

Effect of Si/α-Si3N4 Ratio on the Shape of Silicon Nitride Particles Produced by SHS Method

  • Si and ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder mixtures added with 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were reacted under 5 MPa nitrogen pressure. The reaction products contained ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ particles with elongated shapes. Length and width of the elongated grains were the maximum when the starting powder mixture of 50 wt% Si - 47 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ and 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ was used. Aspect ratio of the elongated grains were between 4.4 and 5. When the starting powder mixture contained 70 wt% Si, large particles with irregular shapes appeared. Meanwhile, the reaction did not proceed when the starting powder mixture contained 30 wt% Si and less. The SHS product was easy to crush and the elongated particles obtained from the starting powder mixtures of 40 wt% Si - 57 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ - 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ and 50 wt% Si - 47 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ - 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were good candidates for the seeds.
