  • Six experimental diets for juvenile sea cucumbers Apostichopus japonicus were evaluated and compared with current commercial diets. Sea cucumbers (50 per tank; initial mean weight $2.3{\pm}0.1g$) in three replicates of seven groups were fed one of six experimental diets (ED1, 20% wild-harvested Sargassum thunbergii powder; ED2, 20% commercial S. thunbergii powder; ED3, 20% Undaria pinnatifida and Ascophyllum nodosum powders; ED4, 40% U. pinnatifida and A. nodosum powders; ED5, 10% brewer's yeast; and ED6, 10% sea shell powder) or a commercial diet (CD) for 28 weeks. The survival rate in all groups was 85-94%, with no significant difference among the experimental groups. The mean body weight of the sea cucumbers was significantly different among the experimental groups 6 weeks after the feeding trial. The final mean weight of the sea cucumbers was highest in ED1, ED3, and ED4, followed by ED6, ED5, ED2, and CD, in decreasing order. The results of this study suggest that U. pinnatifida and A. nodosum powders could provide a substitute for the S. thunbergii powder commonly used in commercial sea cucumber diets. Thus, the EP4 diet formulation, which contains no S. thunbergii, could be used as a practical feed for juvenile sea cucumbers.

  • Marine algal flora and community structure were seasonally examined at Jungjado, on the southern coast of Korea, from July 2007 to May 2008. A total of 112 seaweeds, including 15 green, 24 brown, and 73 red algae, were identified and 33 species were found throughout the year. The average seaweed biomass was 145.78 g dry weight $m^{-2}$, and the biomass was maximal in winter (184.74 g) and minimal in autumn (106.17 g). The dominant and subdominant species in terms of biomass were Sargassum thunbergii and Grateloupia elliptica in summer, S. thunbergii and Corallina pilulifera in autumn, S. thunbergii and Chondracanthus intermedius in winter, and Sargassum fusiforme and G. elliptica in spring. The vertical distribution patterns of seaweeds from the upper to lower intertidal zones at Jungjado were S. thunbergii - Ulva conglobata - Gelidium elegans in summer; Caulacantus ustulatus - Chondria crassicaulis - C. pilulifera in autumn; Ulva australis - S. thunbergii - G. elliptica in winter; and Gloiopeltis tenax - S. fusiforme - G. elliptica in spring. Seasonally the evenness, richness, and diversity indices tended to have their highest values during the winter and their lowest values in the summer. However, the dominant index was recorded as lowest in winter and highest in the summer. The C/P, R/P, and (R+C)/P values reflecting the flora characteristics were 0.58, 3.04, and 3.62, respectively.

  • The species composition and biomass of intertidal benthic algae at 12 widely dispersed stations representative of mid-western coast of Korea were studied. A total of 151 species of marine algae including 19 Cyanophyta, 20 Chlorophyta, 32 Phaeophyta and 80 Rhodophyta is listed. Three species were found at all 12 stations: Sargassum thunbergii, Stylonema alsidii and Gracilaria verrucosa. Biomass per unit area exhibited a wide range of variation, ranging from a low of 41 g dry $wt{\cdot}m^{-2}$ at both Paeksajang and Taechon to a high of 549 g dry $wt{\cdot}m^{-2}$ at Uihangri, the northernmost station of the study area. The latter value is higher than those reported from any other stations in western coast of Korea. Biomass was composed largely of Phaeophyta at nearly every station. Sargassum thunbergii was dominant over the study area. The distribution of Corallina spp., however, is disjunct, since those occur as dominant species in biomass at the northern stations and to a lesser extent at the southern stations, but are nearly absent from the middle part of the study area.

  • This study was carried out to examine seaweed community structure and distribution of crustose coralline algae at the intertidal and subtidal zones of Gallam, Samchuk, eastern coast of Korea. Total 112 species including 14 of green algae, 33 of brown algae, and 65 of red algae were collected and identified. Among these species, 29 species were found throughout the year. The dominant species which contributed significantly to the total biomass were Ulva pertusa, Colpomenia spp., Sargassum fulvellum, Sargassum fusiforme, Sargassum muticum, Sargassum thunbergii, Corallina pilulifera, and Gelidium elegans. Annual seaweed biomass in dry weight was 66.7 $gm^{-2}$ and maximum biomass was recorded seasonally in summer (107.5 $gm^{-2}$), while minimum was recorded in autumn (36.2 $gm^{-2}$). In seaweed functional group analyses, coarsely branched form was the most dominant functional group constituting from 40.0 to 48.6% of the total flora. Ecological state group ESG II, as an opportunistic species, including sheet form, filamentous form, and coarsely branched form, consisted of 46~61 species, constituting 76.7~82.4%. Crustose coralline algae was observed throughout all seasons. Species of the crustose coralline algae were largely classified into Lithothamnion lemoineae, Lithophyllum okamurai, Lithophyllum yessoense, and Hydrolithon gardineri. The coverage of crustose coralline algae seems to be lower than that of other studies from 36.8% to 11% on average.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the community structure and biomass of benthic marine algae at the intertidal and subtidal zones of Eocheongdo on the western coast of Korea seasonally from July 2008 to April 2009. Total 101 species including 12 of green algae, 23 of brown algae and 66 of red algae were collected and identified. Among these species, 19 species were found throughout the year. The dominant species which contributed significantly to the total biomass were Corallina pilulifera, Gelidium elegans, Sargassum thunbergii, Sargassum fusiforme, Saccharina japonica, Sargassum honeri and Sargassum filicinum. Annual seaweed biomass in dry weight was $237.5gm^{-2}$ and maximum biomass was recorded seasonally in winter ($272.1gm^{-2}$), while minimum was recorded in summer ($204.5gm^{-2}$). The number of species and biomass of the subtidal zone were greater than those of the intertidal zone. The number of species and biomass in Eocheongdo seem to be higher than those of other islands in the western coast of Korea, due to the environmental conditions characterized by the increased transparency, and the well established rocky shore.

  • In this study, we investigated the antioxidant activity of solvent extracts from Sargassum thunbergii by measuring electron-donating ability (EDA), nitrite- scavenging ability, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, reducing power and antioxidant activity in $\beta-carotene-linoleate$ model system. Total phenolic compound contents of chloroform and methanol extracts from Sargassum thunbergii were $22.5{\pm}0.8$ mg/100 mL and $20.1{\pm}0.6$ mg/100 mL, respectively. The EDA were proportionally increased with concentration of the extracts except hexane extract. The EDAs were $70.4\%\;and\;63.2\%$ in methanol and water at concentration of $1000{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The nitrite-scavenging ability of methanol extract (pH 2.5, $1000{\mu}g/mL$) was $89.4{\pm}0.9\%$ that was higher than those of other extracts. SOD-like ability of chloroform extract was stronger than other extracts. Reducing power of chloroform extracts at $1000{\mu}g/mL$ were 0.75 as O.D. value of 700 nm and antioxidant activities measured with $\beta-carotene-linoleate$ model system were in order of methanol $(78.4\%)>BHT\;(72.1\%)>chloroform\;(62.2\%)>water\;(51.4\%)>hexane\;(43.2\%)$. These results indicated that methanol extract from Sargassum thunbergii showed the highest activities on the EDA, nitrate- scavenging ability and antioxidant activities while the chloroform extract had the highest effect on the SOD-like activity and reducing power.
