The purpose of this research is to absorb and remove sulfur dioxide existing in the air by using ion exchange non-woven fabric. So we found out very appropriate condition of anionic exchange fabric scrubber by measuring amount of SO$_2$ adsorption under the atmosphere that concentration, velocity, and humidity was 100∼200 ppm, 0.6∼1.0 m/sec, and 30∼90 RH%, respectively. Ion exchange capacity of ion exchanger showed the maximum value, 3.75 meq/g at pH 4, and adsorption equilibrium time was the maximum value, 30 h when gas velocity was 0.6 m/sec, moreover, at 80$\^{C}$, adsorption equilibrium time tended to decrease more than 10 h. When concentration was 200 ppm, while reaction speed between SO$_2$ and ligand of fibrous ion exchanger was getting faster, adsorption break point had a tendency to get faster as well. In addition, when relative humidity in the scrubber was 90%, adsorption efficiency was 7.6%/h that seemed to be 30% higher than 4.6%/h coming from the condition that relative humidity had been 30%, and it was totally absorbed under 5 wt% NaOH solution in 5 minutes.

The Okmyong Waste Landfill which is one of major industrial waste landfills in Korea has been used for 10 years since January, 1988. The groundwater in range of 2∼3 km from the landfill is a little acidic and has high concentrations of EC, NO$_3$, and SO$_4$ because of acidic rain in Pohang. The groundwater pattern in Piper's trilinear diagram belongs to Ca-SO$_4$and Na-SO$_4$types, but Ca-SO$_4$type is more predominant. The groundwater of five monitoring wells at the landfill area is a litle alkaline and has high concentrations of TS, COD, Na, Cl, SO$_4$, Alkalinity and F because of the effect of the leachates. They also have high heavy metals of Mn, Zn, Pb, Cr and Ni but toxic organic compounds are not detected. Their groundwater pattern is Na-SO$_4$type and distinguished from the groundwater pattern Na-Cl types of the Nanjido and the Seokdae Municipal Waste Landfills. The range of groundwater contamination which is validated up to now is about 120m west from the entrance of the Okmyong Waste Landfill. To prevent the dispersion of the leachates to the outside, cutoff walls should be constructed at the boundary of the landfill. Several pumping wells should also be developed at the landfill so that the contaminated groundwater can be pumped and treated at a leachate-treatment plant in the landfill.
In this study, the $CaSO_4:Eu$ TLDs are fabricated and their trap parameters are determined. The optimum concentration of Eu for fabrication of the $CaSO_4:Eu$ TLD is 0.5 mol% and optimum temperature is $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours sintering in air. The glow curve of $CaSO_4:Eu$ consists of two glow peaks and these peaks are isolated by thermal bleaching method. Trap parameters of two glow peaks are measured using the initial rise, the peak shape, the heating rate and the least square curve fitting methods. The activation energies of the glow peak I and II are 1.00 eV and 1.09 eV, and the frequency factors are $7.04{\times}10^{11}\;s^{-1}$ and $5.12{\times}10^{11}\;s^{-1}$ and the kinetic orders are 1.11 and 1.33, respectively.
The relationship between soluble salts and microbial growth on stone surface was investigated. Samples from deteriorated surface layers of several stone monuments were collected, and the soluble salts in samples were chemically analysed. According to the results of chemical analyses, $Na_2SO_4$, $CaSO_4$$2H_2O$, and NaCl and so on were added to isolation media. As a result of preliminary experiments, 15 bacteria were selected. They are all Gram positives and fourteen of them were rods. Every bacteria could grow not only in media without salts, but also in media with $CaCO_3$, $CaSO_4$$2H_2O$, and $Ca(OH)_2$. Three bacteria, Bl6, B56, and B6l, secreted viscous substances in these $Ca^{2+}$ added media. $CaCl_2$$2H_2O$ was the most hygroscopic among 11 soluble salts, but it seemed to interfere with bacterial growth. Ammonium ion was the inhibitor, too.
The hydration of $C_3A$ and $C_3A-CaSO_4$.$2H_2O$ was investigated with varying concentration (0.1-1.0%) of sodium gluconate solution. gluconate solution. Sodium gluconate accelerates cation dissolution from $C_3A$ for the first several minutes but depresses the rate of heat evolution in the course of $C_3A$ hydration. The hydration of $C_3A$ in the presence of sodium gluconate was modified such that the formation of the intermediate hydrate C4AH$\chi$ crystal was much reduced and most of the product became amorphous. The retardation of $C_3A-CaSO_4$.$2H_2O$ hydration in the presence of sodium gluconate was controlled by the competitive adsorption between gluconate anion and $SO_4^{-2}$ onto $C_3A$ surface.
Pseudomanas fluorescens was selected from mushroom and studied in both batch and continuous culture in order to find out optimum conditions for cultivation. P. fluorescens is an aerobic bacterium and antagonistic to Pseudomonas tolaasii which causes blotch disease on the mushroom cap. Cells of P. fluorescens were grown well on medium containing 30g/L of glucose, whereas the growth was inhibited with the glucose concentration at higher than 30g/L. The highest value of specific growth rate and productivity were obtained when using 10g/L of yeast extract. Optimum concentrations of $NH_4Cl$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ for culture were found to be 1.0g/L and 0.1g/L respectively. Optimum concentration of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ used as a sulfur source was 1.0g/L. It was also found that the cell concentrations were at the maximum level when grown on the medium containing 1.0g/L of $KH_2PO_4$ and 0.1g/L of $CaCl_2$. Also, the optimum culture conditions were $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0. Cultivation of P.fluorescens at high initial dissolved oxygen (D.O) value led to a decrease of bacterial productivity in batch culture. Maximum productivity was achieved at 68 for the initial D.O value.
The morphological effects of intranasal zinc sulfate(5% solution) irrigation on the mouse olfactory epithelium and the regeneration process of olfactory receptor cells following nasal irrigation were studied with scanning and transmission electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. The septal epithelium except some basal cells was wholly detached from the basement membrane, during the first 6 to 24 hours after 5% zinc sulfate irrigation. 2. 3 days after $ZnSO_4$ treatment, two layered septal epithelium was formed from basal cells. And microvilli were observed in the apical epithelium of newly formed olfactory epithelial cells. 3. 5 days after treatment, a lot of centrosomes and basal bodies were observed in the olfactory receptor cells, and cilia were lined up between microvilli on the apical membrane of olfactory receptor cells. And immature olfactory knob was first observed in the newly formed olfactory receptor cells. Mature olfactory knob was observed 1 week after treatment. 4. There are very many mature olfactory knobs in the olfactory receptor cells 2 weeks after intranasal zinc sulfate irrigation. These results support that treatment with 5% zinc sulfate is a good experimental model for the regeneration of mammalian nervous tissues because this method could thoroughly detach the septal epithelium. During the regeneration of olfactory receptor cells, the surface membrane of the olfactory receptor cells widen the surface with the microvilli. Then cilia, which arranged in a line, substituted for the microvilli. The part of the surface membrane with cilia protruded and finally formed the olfactory vesicle.
This study has been conducted to give some ideas for reasonable ecological management of Taejon city and its adjacent forest ecosystem against the effect of acid rain. Rain monitoring points to analyse its components represented 1 point in industrial area, 4 points in commercial area, 4 points in residential area, and 5 points in suburban area and forest survey was done in 7 forest sites adjacent to rain monitoring points. Transformed vegetation index(TVI) based on Landsat TM data was analysed for forest area. Taejon area was seriously contaminated by air pollutants and average concentration of anions in precipitation were 20.16mg/l for $SO_4{^{2-}}$, 3.65mg/l for $NO_3{^-}$, and 3.09mg/l for $Cl^-$. Anion in precipitation were $1.09mg/m^2/month$ for $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $0.23mg/m^2/month$ for $NO_3{^-}$, and $0.20mg/m^2/month$ for $Cl^-$. Cation in precipitation were $0.14mg/m^2/month$ for $Ca^{2+}$, $0.10mg/m^2/month$ for $NH_4{^+}$, $0.08mg/m^2/month$ for $Na^+$, $0.07mg/m^2/month$ for $K^+$, and $0.08mg/m^2/month$ for $Mg^{2+}$. The region with the highest concentration of $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $Cl^-$ in rain was industrial area. $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $Cl^-$ concentrations in industrial area were 43.08, 3.88, and 3.64ppm, respectively. Forest soil showed strongly acidic ranging pH4.16-4.94. Transformed vegetation index(TVI) were 3.11 in Dangsan, 4.00 in Kyechoksan, 4.13 in Bomunsan, 4.18 in Kabhasan, 3.34 in Bongsan, 4.13 in Sikchangsan, and 4.20 in Seongchisan. Dangsan forest located near in industrial area showed the lowest TVI.

The collection of rainwater samples was made at Jeju area during 2009~2010, and the major ionic species were analyzed. In the comparison of ion balance, conductivity, and acid fraction for the validation of analytical data, the correlation coefficients showed a good linear relationship within the range of 0.966~0.990. The volume-weighted mean pH and electric conductivity were 4.9 and $17.8{\mu}S/cm$, respectively, at the Jeju area. The volume-weighted mean concentrations of ionic species in rainwater were in the order of $Cl^-$ > $Na^+$ > $nss-SO_4{^{2-}}$ > $NH_4{^+}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $H^+$ > $nss-Ca^{2+}$ > $HCOO^-$ > $K^+$ > $PO_4{^{3-}}$ > $CH_3COO^-$ > $NO_2{^-}$ > $F^-$ > $HCO_3{^-}$ > $CH_3SO_3{^-}$. The ionic strength of rainwater was $0.26{\pm}0.21$ mM during the study period. The composition ratios of ionic species were such as 50.1% for the marine sources ($Na^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Cl^-$), 30.9% for the anthropogenic sources ($NH_4{^+}$, $nss-SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$), and 4.7% for the soil source ($nss-Ca^{2+}$), and 3.1% for organic acids ($HCOO^-$, $CH_3COO^-$). From the seasonal comparison, the concentrations of $NO_3{^-}$, $nss-Ca^{2+}$, and $nss-SO_4{^{2-}}$ increased in winter and spring seasons, indicating a reasonable possibility of long range transport from Asia continent. Especially, the acidifying contributions by major inorganic acids ($nss-SO_4{^{2-}}$ and $NO_3{^-}$) and organic acids ($HCOO^-$ and $CH_3COO^-$) were 87.6% and 12.4%, respectively. In comparison by sectional inflow pathway of air mass during the rainy sampling days, the concentrations of $nss-SO_4{^{2-}}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ were relatively high when the air mass was moved from the China continent into Jeju area.
Concentrations of sulfate and 6-values of sulfate, $({\delta}^{34}SO_4_){pw}$, dissolved In pore waters were measured from the sediment cores of the two different marine environments : deep northeast Pacific (57-1) and coastal Kyunggi Bay of Yellow Sea (57-2) . Sulfate concentration in pore waters decreases with depth at both cores, reflecting sulfate reduction in the sediment columns. However, much higher gradient of pore water sulfate at 57-2 than 57-1 indicates more rapid sulfate reduction at 57-2, because of high sedimentation rate at the coastal area compared to the deep-sea. The measured 6-values, $({\delta}^{34}SO_4_){pw}$, follow extremely well the predicted trend of the Rayleigh fractionation equation. The range of 26.756 to 61.35% at the coastal core 57-2 is not so great as that of 32.4$\textperthousand$ to 97.8$\textperthousand$ at the deep-sea core 57-1. Despite greater graclient of pore water sulfate at 57-2, the 6-values become lower than those of the deep- sea core 57-1. This inverse relation between the 6-values and the gradients of pore water sulfate could be explained by the combination of the two subsequent factors : the kinetic effect by which the residual pore water sulfate becomes progressively enriched with respect to the heavy isotope of $^{34}S$ as sulfate reduction proceeds, and the intrinsic formulation effect of the Rayleigh fractionation equation in which the greater becomes the fractionation factor, the more diminished values of $({\delta}^{34}SO_4_){pw}$ are predicted.
