Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis systems offer several advantages over traditional technologies including higher energy efficiency, higher production rates, and more compact design. In this study, all the experiments were performed with a self-designed PEM electrolyser operated at 1 atm and $25^{\circ}C$. Two types of electrolyte were used: (i) potassium hydroxide (KOH), and (ii) sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$). In the experiments, the voltage, current, and time were measured. The concentration of the electrolyte significantly affected the electrolyser performance. Overall the best case was with 15 wt% $H_2SO_4$ at the anode channel and 20 wt% at the cathode channel with. In addition, increasing the difference in concentration of the sulfuric acid had an effect on the diffusion. The diffusion flux became larger when the difference in concentration became larger, increasing electrolyser efficiency without the addition of extra energy.

The simple and precise model for the estimation of rain acidity from the ambient air quality was developed using the theory of wet scrubber and the chemical equilibria of $SO_2, CO_2, and H_2O$ system. From the measured mixing height, and from the developed relationship between NTU (=number of transfer units) and the concentration of $SO_2$(aq) in rain drops, the HTU (= height equivalent to one transfer unit, i.e. mass transfer resistance) was estimated, and validated with the field-measured data. In Seoul, Korea where the effect of $SO_2$ on rainfall acidity is as high as 84% and the average mixing height is 1 km, the average HTU of $SO_2$ system was found to be 191.5m. The important parameters affecting HTU were identified as rainfall intensity and initial ambient concentration of $SO_2$, and their effects on the value of overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient were quantified.
This study was carried out to investigate the chemical characteristics ol rainwater sampled in Cheju City from July 1994 to June 1996. Concentrations of major ions (Cl-,$SO_4^{2-}$, NO_3^-$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and NH_4^+$) were determined. The pH of rainwater, calculated from the volume weighted H+ concentration, was found to be 5.61, indicating extensive neutralization of the acidity in the rain. The relative magnitude of average ionic concentrations followed the relation Cl-> $SO_4^{2-}$) $Na^+$> Ca^{2+}$> NH_4^+$> NO_3^-$> $Mg^{2+}$> $K^+$. The ions associated with sea salt, namely $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$, dominated the total concentration of ions in the rainwater and the $SO_4^{2-}$ ion accounts for 20% of total concentration. [H+][nss-SO42-+NO3] ratio and a multiple regression for $SO_4^{2-}$ and NO3- ions against $H^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ and $NH_4^+$ suggested that all of $SO_4^{2-}$ and $NO_3^-$ in rainwater was not necessarily associated with $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$, but might also occur in combination with $NH_4^+$ or Ca^{2+}$. The monthly mean concentrations of $SO_4^{2-}$-, Ca^{2+}$ and $NH_4^+$ in spring time was higher than those in other seasons. These results may De attributed to the fertilizer application as the local sources and the yellow sand phenomina as a regional-scale sources.
This study wa attempted to extract the Potash-Ammonia Fertilyzer in most satisfactory yield from the Uncalcinecl Domestic Alunite ore applying an optimal reaction conditions (Ammonia water concentration and applicable reaction pressure, etc.), it was found that almost all amount of $K_2SO_4$ was extracted in the forms of $K_2SO_4·(NH_4)_2SO_4$mixture under such conditions. The experimental data to note are as follows: 1. The optimal pressure applied to the reaction was 600 to 700 Psig. 2. The optimal concentration of Ammonia water was 7 Mol/L. 3. The reaction time needed was 3 hours. 4. The extraction rate and degree were not at variance with sorts and occurrences of Alunite ore.
A three-phase fluidized-bed bioreactor including Thiobacillus sp. IW was tested to remove H_2S and $NH_3$ simultaneously. The inlet $H_2S$ was oxidized to $SO_4^{2-}$ by Thiobacillus sp. IW, and the $NH_3$ reacted with the $SO_4^{2-}$ to form $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ was 98.4-99.9% for an inlet concentration of 36-730 ppm and that of $NH_3$ was 60.2-99.2% for an inlet concentration of 45-412 ppm. The removal efficiency of $NH_3$ was reduced when the inlet loading rate of $NH_3$ was increased above 10 mg/l/h. When the bioreactor was operated for 25 days with a lower inlet concentration of $NH_3$ compared with the of $H_2S$, the bioreactor exhibited an excellent performance with a stable pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cell concentration.
In this study, the behaviour of $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ adsorption on aminated ultrafine fibrous PP-g-AAc ion exchanger was investigated, The amount of adsorbed $SO_2$ increased with increasing the initial concentration of $SO_2$. The adsorption breakthrough time in the low concentration of $SO_2$ was faster than high concentration. The adsorption breakthrough occurred within 60 min. Approximately 80% of $SO_2$ was adsorbed below 100 ppm $SO_2$ and 90% of $SO_2$ over 100 ppm $SO_2$ respectively. The selective adsorption rate for $NO_2$ was lower than that of $SO_2$. The adsorption rate for $SO_2$ was decreased with increasing flow rate and that of $NO_2$ was 60%. The breakthrough occurred within 60 min. The adsorption rate for $SO_2$ was 92% in the 250 mL/g water content. Isotherm adsorption model for $SO_2$ was close to the Langmuir rather than Freundlich model.
The recovery of $H_2$$SO_4$from sulfuric acid waste was attempted by a diffusion dialysis method using an anion extchange membrane. The effect of flow rate, temperature, concentration of metal ions on the recovery rate was studied. The recovery of $H_2$$SO_4$decreased with the concentration of $H_2$$SO_4$and flow rate. The recovery increased with the flow rate ratio of water/$H_2$$SO_4$solution upto 1 above which no further increase was observed. The flow rate did not affect the rejection of Fe and Ni ions. As a result, about 80% of $H_2$$SO_4$could be recovered from sulfuric acid wastes which contains 4.5M free$-H_2$$SO_4$at the flow rate of 0.26 $1/hr-m^2$. The concentration and purity of recovered $H_2$$SO_4$was 4.3M and 99.8%, respectively.
Hypocotyl-derived callus cultures of Brassica pekinensis cv. Chungseng were grown on Murashige-Skoog medium containing NaCl, Na2SO4 and mannitol to clarify the effect of salts on callus growth, proline accumulation and water relations. Na2SO4 was more inhibitory than NaCl when survival rate, growth and fresh:dry weight ratios of established callus were measured. Fresh weight in 0.25% NaCl treatment was more than twice as increasable in comparison to the same concentration of Na2SO4 or control. Proline concentration was increased on either salt, attained at highest levels at the 5th subculture, and fluctuated as affected by both salts or mannitol. Concentrations of redeucing sugars were sharply increased after 2 or 3 times of subculture and decreased by increasing subculture. The water and osmotic potential in callus reached a maximum negative value after two weeks in culture, regardless of salt type and mannitol and tugor remained relatively constant on both salt and mannitol treatments.
The objects of this study were to investigate emissions of air pollutant the particles as well as the combustibility of the low grade domestic anthracite coal and imported high-calorific bituminous coal in the fluidized bed coal combustor. The production of air pollution from anthracite-bituminous coal blend combustion in a fluidized bed coal combustor was evaluated. The effects of air velocity and anthracite fraction on the reaching time of steady state condition was also evaluated. We used coal samples the domestic low grade anthracite coal with heating value of 2,010 kcal/kg and the imported high grade bituminous coal with heating value of 6,520 kcal/kg. The experimental results are presented as follows. The time of reaching to steady state was affected by the temperature variation. The steady state time was about 120 minute at 0.3 m/s which was the fastest. It has been found that $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentration were reached steady state at about 100 minute. As the height of fluidized bed becomes higher, the concentration s of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ mainly increased. The concentration of freeboard was the highest and emission concentration was diminished. Also, as anthracite fraction increased, the emission of $SO_x$ concentration was increased. But, it has been found that the variation of $NO_x$ concentration with anthracite fraction was negligible and the difference of emission concentration according to air flow rates was negligible, too. It has been found that $O_2$ concentration decreased and $CO_2$ concentration increased as the height of fluidized bed increased. As anthracite fraction increased, the mass of elutriation particles increased, and $CO_2$ concentration decreased. Also, as air velocity increased, $O_2$ concentration decreased and $CO_2$ concentration increased. Regardless-of anthracite fraction and flow rate, the combustible weight percentage in elutriation particles were high in the case of fine particles.
It was studied to analyze the $CO_2$, CO, $SO_2$ standard gases of combustion gases by the open path FT-IR spectrometer with passive mode for remote analysis of air pollutant and volcano gases without IR lamp. As result, it was confirmed to have good linearity with more than 0.9 as correlation coefficients on the calibration curve of $CO_2$, CO concentration by MLR method. But in the case of $SO_2$, because the correlation coefficients were 0.88, the linearity could be lower. Finally, the concentration of three gases was predicted on in-site fire experiment under the condition of quantitative analysis. It could measure high $CO_2$ concentration as predicted result, but didn't measure the CO and $SO_2$. According to the result, it was possible to measure the combustion gases to long distance by only open path FT-IR spectrometer without infrared lamp.
