Growth and Characterization of $K_3LiNb_6O_{17}$ Single Crystals

  • Starting from the stoichiometric composition of $K_2$CO$_3$: Li$_2$CO$_3$: Nb$_2$O$_5$=3 : 2 : 5 with the mole ratio, $K_3$LiNb$_6$O$_17$ 17/ single crystals were grown using the Czochralski method. Although the starting melt composition corresponds to the $K_3$Li$_2$Nb$_5$O$_15$ crystals, the chemical composition of the as grown crystals appears to be $K_2.95$Li$_1.33$Nb$_6.17$O$_17$ or $K_2.60$Li$_1.17$Nb$_{5.44}$ 5.44/O$_{15}$ which relatively contain fewer Li ions than $K_3$Li$_2$Nb$_5$O$_15$ crystals. We investigated the influence of the deficiency of the Li ions in the tetragonal tungsten bronze structure through the measurements of DE loop, temperature dependent dielectric constant, differential thermal analysis and temperature dependent X-ray diffraction pattern.

  • The crystallization behavior and dc Conductivities of CuO-Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ -V$_2$O$_{5}$ glasses prepared by quenching on the copper plate were investigated. The conductivities of the glasses were range from 10$^{-4}$ s.$cm^{-1}$ / at room temperature, but the conductivities of the glass-ceramics were 10$^{-3}$ s.$cm^{-1}$ / increased by 10$^1$ order. The linear relationship between In($\sigma$T) and T$^{-1}$ suggested that the electrical conduction in the present glass system would be due to a small polaron hopping mechanism. The value of activation energy of glass-ceramics heat-treated at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for 12hrs was found to be 0.leV

  • Effects of $Nb_2O_5$ addition ranged from 0.0 to 0.75(wt%) on the microstructure and electrical porperties of PZT ceramics have been investigated. The Pb vacancy concentration increases with increasing NbO content. However, the experimental results show the resistivity increases with increasing $Nb^{5+}$ content. This behavior can be explained as a compensation effect and $Nb^{5+}$ can serve as a donar and contribute electrons to the conduction process. According to the law of mass action, this result may reduce the total charge carrier:thus the resistivity increase with NbO content in PZT.

  • Spatial homogenity of Mg (4 mole %):LiNb$O_3$ is investigated by studying the characteristic of Second Harmonic Generation in Mg:LiNb$O_3$ as a function of temperature and DC Electric Field. It is found that the temperaturs at which the intensity of the second harmonic is reduced to the first zero from its maximum for the phase matching condition is shifted linearly to the strength of DC Electric field applied to optic axis of Mg:LiNb$O_3$. From these results, the electro-optic coefficient of Mg:LiNb$O_3$ is estimated to be higher than that of Congruent LiNb$O_3$ by a factor of 1.5.

  • Stabilization of the perovskite phase and sequence of reactions occuring during calcination were studied with solid solutions formed between Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 and Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O3. In the PZN-PFN composition of equal molar ratio, rhombohedral type pyrochlore phase (Pb2Nb2O7) and PbO-rich distorted cubic type pyrochlore phase (Pb3Nb2O8) were coexisted as intermediate phases at temperatures below 85$0^{\circ}C$, and these phases transformed to a stable cubic type pyrochlore phase, Pb3Nb4O13 solid solution and a perovskite solid solution at temperatures above 85$0^{\circ}C$. The major stable phase as increasing sintering temperatures was a perovskite phase in this binary system and prominent suppression of the pyrochlore phase was achieved by substituting Zn2+ with Fe3+ or by increasing sintering temperature. The composition containing 20mol% PZN possessed the best dielectric properties, and the dissipation factor was lower than 5% in all compositions.

  • $Nd_2O_3$0.2~0.5 wt.% doped $LiNbO_3$single crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. The ZnO doping by 2~8 mole% can improve the resistance of optical damage. In this study, Nd : LiNbO$_3$ single crystals with the periodical domain structure were obtained by CZ method.

  • Tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (TZPs) doped with $Y_{2}O_{3}$ and $Nb_{2}O_{5}$ were prepared by the conventional sintering to enhance fracture toughness and phase stability of TZPs without controlling the grain size. TZP composites were obtained by adding the transformable TZP to the non-transformable TZP in wt%. The monolithic tetragonal $ZrO_2$, same as the composite composition containing 15 wt% transformable TZP, sintered at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 10h in air, exhibited the fracture toughness of 9$MPam^{1/2}$ and no low-and high-temperature degradation at temperatures in the range of 220 to $1000^{\circ}C$ for 100h in air. The corresponding single composition was 90.24 mol% $ZrO_2$-5.31 mol% $Y_{2}O_{3}$-4.75 mol% $Nb_{2}O_{5}$. The microstructure observation revealed that the t-$ZrO_2$ grains grew grandually with sintering time and no microcraking and twinning were observed.

Electrical Properties of ZnO Varistors with variation of $Nb_2O_5$ ($Nb_2O_5$ 첨가에 따른 바리스터의 전기적 특성)

  • ZnO varistor ceramics which were fabricated with variation of added of 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1mol% $Nb_2O_5$ sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$. In the specimen added 0.05mol% $Nb_2O_5$, sintered density was $5.87g/cm^3$ and electrical properties were superior to any other components. The nonlinear coefficient was 75, and clamping voltage ratio was 1.40. And, endurance surge current in the specimen added 0.05mol% $Nb_2O_5$ was $6500A/cm^2$, and deviation of varistor voltage was -1.7%. As P.C.T and T.C.T environment test were succeed in all specimens, and deviation of varistor voltage in the specimen added 0.3mol% $Nb_2O_5$ was -0.81%. All specimens showed a good leakage current property in the High Temperature Continuous Load Test for 1000hr, at $85^{\circ}C$, and variation rate of the varistor voltage was -1.71%.
