Because of its stable quantity and quality, groundwater has long been a reliable source of drinking water for domestic users. Rapid economic growth and rising standards of living have in recent years put severe demands on drinking water supplies in Korea. Groundwaters that are currently being used for natural mineral water were hydrochemically evaluated and investigated in order to maintain their quality to satisfy strict health standards. There exist 15 natural mineral water plants in the Okcheon metamorphic belt. Characteristics of groundwaters are different from those of other areas in that electrical conductivity, hardness, contents of Ca, Mg and $HCO_3$are relatively high. The content of major cations is in the order of Ca>Mg, Na>K, whereas that of major anions shows the order of $HCO_3$>$SO_4$>Cl>F. The fact that the Ca-Mg-HCO$_3$type is mostly predominant among water types reflects that dissolution of carbonates that are abundantly present in the metamorphic rocks plays an important part in groundwater chemistry. Representative correlation coefficients between chemical species show Mg-$HCO_3$(0.92), Ca-$HCO_3$(0.88), Ca-Mg(0.80), Ca-Cl(0.78), Mg-$SO_4$(0.78), Ca-$SO_4$(0.71), possibly due to the effect by dissolution of carbonates, gypsum or anhydrite. Determinative coefficients between some chemical species represent a good relationship, especially for EC-(K+Na+Ca), Ca-$HCO_3$, Ca-Mg, indiacting that they are similar in chemical behaviors. According to saturation index, most chemical species are undersaturated with respect to major minerals, except for some silica phases. Groundwater is slightly undersaturated with respect to calcite and dolomite, whereas it is still greatly undersaturated with respect to gypsum, anhydrite and fluorite, Based on the Phase equilibrium in the systems $NA_2$O-$Al_2$$O_3$-$SiO_2$-$H_2$O and $K_2$O-$Al_2$$O_3$-$SiO_2$-$H_2$O, it is clear that groundwater is in equilibrium with kaolinite, evolved from the stability area of gibbsite during water-rock interaction. It is expected that chemical evolution of groundwater continue to proceed with increasing pH by reaction of feldspars, with calcite much less reactive.

This paper investigates the effect of coal-fired fly ash on dry $CO_2$ sorbents as the supports and additives. For this purpose, various kinds of dry sorbent were manufactured by mixing fly-ash, the primary $CO_2$ absorption components (NaOH and CaO) and water with their different combination. Thereafter, their $CO_2$ absorption performance and the property were analyzed. As a result, variation of absorption efficiency and temperature as well as $CO_2$ desorption of the sorbents are confirmed, which may be primarily ascribed to fly-ash addition to the sorbents. Particularly, fly-ash effect is strongly measured in the sorbent manufactured by mixing all four components (named WNCF sorbents). Absorption efficiency of WNCF sorbents at $550^{\circ}C$ is 35.6% higher than that of flyash free sorbent and desorption is solely observed in WNCF sorbents. Fly-ash in WNCF sorbents leads to increase the dispersity of $CO_2$ absorption components and decrease their particle size in the sorbents. In addition, fly-ash is used as the supports and pozzolanic reaction is hindered by NaOH in WNCF sorbent. Furthermore, $CO_2$ desorption from the sorbents may be due to fly-ash. The interaction between fly-ash and $CO_2$ absorption components substantially attenuate the strength between captured $CO_2$ in CaO and NaOH.

Identification of various inorganic compound crystals contained in solar salts, which are produced from 12 areas of Jeonnam, was firstly made by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The analysis of the XRD spectra was carried out on the basis of Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) data and the results of Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDX) measurements. In particular, the analysis of the XRD spectra supported that each solar salt contains $Na_2S$ (Shinan Jeungdo and Sinui), $KMgCl_3$ (Shinan Bigeum), $Ca(ClO_3)_2$ (Shinan Docho), $CaAl_4O_7$ (Haenam Songji), $CaSiO_3$ and $CaCl_2$ (Goheung) as inorganic compound crystals, which have not been reported for the solar salts. Also, the XRD results indicated that the solar salts maintain a cubic NaCl crystal structure without any change of lattice parameters etc. However, it was shown in the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) images that an external form of the solar salts has a lamination layer shape of a cubic structure, which is different from a simple cubic form for the purified salts and the reagent NaCl.
The corrosion problems in water distribution system are reduced by decreasing the agressivity of drinking water which is evaluated by marble test and saturation indices(LSI or CCPP etc.). Marble test is a reliable method to determine the actual saturation condition of treated water. This study was done to determined the aggressivity of tap water and the effectiveness of $Ca(OH)_2$ and NaOH dosage for corrosion control. The drinking water in Seoul were evaluated by marble test and Langelier Index(LSI) and Calcium Carbonate Precipitation Potential(CCPP). The results indicated that the drinking water in Seoul were undersaturated as Calcium Carbonate($CaCO_3$). The LSI and CCPP of the water treated with $Ca(OH)_2$ were higher than that of water treated with NaOH. Therefore, to increase the Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness for corrosion control in water distribution system, $Ca(OH)_2$ is more effective than NaOH.
Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ added to the solution affects the hydration of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$ with calcium sulfate. The reaction between 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ Fe$_2$O$_3$and CaSO$_4$ㆍ 2$H_2O$ decrease with increasing amount of Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ in solution, owing to low hydraulic reactivity of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$by the adsorption of silicate ions on the surface of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍ Fe$_2$O$_3$ particles. The dissolution rate of 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍ Fe$_2$O$_3$ particles deceased with the increase of the concentration of silicate ion in solution. When the 4CaOㆍAl$_2$O$_3$ㆍFe$_2$O$_3$ particles was hydrated in gypsum - Na$_2$Si$_2$O$_{5}$ solution, the hydration was retarded and the rate could not discriminate between formation of ettringite and that of monosulfate, and it stopped in high concentration of silicate ions. However, silicate ion did not any effect on the dissolution rate of gypsum.ypsum.

This study was conducted ton investigate the mineral contents of commercial baby foods. Samples were classified into 4 groups; powdered formula, baby juice product (domestic), juice and paste products (imported) and soymilk-based formula. We analyzed Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Cu, Zn contents by atomic absorption spectrophotometer after dry-ashing. The difference of analyzed value versus labeled value and Ca/P ratio of analyzed value were calculated. The difference (%) of analyzed value on the labeled value was Ca: 98.6, P: 121.8, Mg: 146.1, Na: 87.4, K: 104.3, Fe: 104.8, Cu: 120.2, Zn: 109.8 in powdered formula, Mg showed the highest difference among the elements. The Ca/P ratio of powdered formula was 1.41 (1.70-1.99). Baby juice products (domestic) were fortified Ca, Fe and the difference (%) of analyzed value on labeled value of Ca and Fe contents was 131.8, 110.2, respectively. The Ca/P ratio of these was 2.36 (1.64-3.71). Differently the domestic products, imported juice and paste products were not fortified Ca, Fe and its Ca/P ratio was 0.38(0.14-0.59). The difference (%) of analyzed value on the labeled value was Ca: 110.2, Mg: 179.5, Na: 83.7, K: 87.8, Cu: 107.8, Fe: 219.8, Zn: 100.5, P: 126.6 in soymilk-based formula, Fe showed the highest difference among the elements. The Ca/P ratio of soymilk-based formula was 1.17 (1.04-0.39).
Melting slag generated from municipal-incinerator ash contains lots of impurities which have adverse effects on zeolite synthesis. These impurities are detrimental to zeolite synthesis, and the yield and purity of zeolite was decreased. And thus its performance is lowered. In melting slag, there are lots of components such as $Fe_2O_3$, FeO and CaO. To remove these impurities, we treated the melting slag with hydrochloric acid at initial pH 1, 3, 5, and 7. After the treatment, the $SiO_2,\;Fe_2O_3,\;and\;TiO_2$ ratios increased, but the $Al_2O_3,\;FeO,\;CaO,\;Na_2O$ and MgO ratios decreased. We reacted these treated slag in a NaOH solution under hydrothermal conditions at $80^{\circ}C$. The hydrothermal products from the slag and the slag treated at pH 7 and pH 5 were determined to be tobermorite, whereas those at pH 3 and pH 1, Na-P1 and Na-X zoelite respectively. CaO was found to inhibit the synthesis of zeolite.
To characterize cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ fluctuations under metabolic inhibition, rat ventricular myocytes were exposed to $200{\mu}M$ 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and mitochondrial $Ca^{2+}$, mitochondrial membrane potential (${\Delta}{\Psi}m$), and cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ were measured, using Rhod-2 AM, TMRE, and Fluo-4 AM fluorescent dyes, respectively, by Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (LSCM). Furthermore, the role of sarcolemmal $Na^+$/$Ca^{2+}$ exchange (NCX) in cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ efflux was studied in KB-R7943 and $Na^+$-free normal Tyrode's solution (143 mM LiCl ). When DNP was applied to cells loaded with Fluo-4 AM, Fluo-4 AM fluorescence intensity initially increased by $70{\pm}10$% within $70{\pm}10$ s, and later by $400{\pm}200$% at $850{\pm}45$ s. Fluorescence intensity of both Rhod-2 AM and TMRE were initially decreased by DNP, coincident with the initial increase of Fluo-4 AM fluorescence intensity. When sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) $Ca^{2+}$ was depleted by $1{\mu}M thapsigargin plus $10{\mu}M ryanodine, the initial increase of Fluo-4 AM fluorescence intensity was unaffected, however, the subsequent progressive increase was abolished. KB-R7943 delayed both the first and the second phases of cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ overload, while $Na^+$-free solution accelerated the second. The above results suggest that: 1) the initial rise in cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ under DNP results from mitochondrial depolarization; 2) the secondary increase is caused by progressive $Ca^{2+}$ release from SR; 3) NCX plays an important role in transient cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ shifts under metabolic inhibition with DNP.

This study is for know chemistry of the representative soils from Keumsan, its relationships with dissolved compositions, and its absorption relationships within the flora. It has been done for two comparisons: 1) phyllite, shale and granite(PSG), and 2) granite and coal bearing shale(GC). Among the soil leachate of the PSG, cations are mainly low in the phyllite area while anions are mainly low in the granite area. In the soil compositions, Ca and Mg of the beans are high and Na is high in the granite area while Ca and Na of the perilla are high in the granite area and Mg is high in the phyllite area. In th both species, Na for the granite area and Mg for the phyllite area are high while Ca for the shale area is low. Among the flora, shale area shows low Ca and Mg contents while granite area shows slightly high Na contents, regardless the species. Compared with beans, perilla is low in the Mg and high in the Na contents. These relationships show that the contents of the soil leachate do not reflect absorption within the flora. Among the soil leachate of the GC, shale area is high in the most of the elements. Especially, SO$_4$ is over 15 times high In the phyllite area. In the soil, granite area shows high Ca, Na and low Mg contents. In the flora, the Miscanthus sinensis shows high Ca and Mg contents in the granite area while the Artemisia vulgaris shows high Ca, Ca and Mg contents in the shale area. These relationships for contents of the flora and soil leachate suggest that the flora has a different absorption according different species.
Elemental analysis of 40 glass samples from the Northern Tomb and the Southern Tomb of Hwangnam-daech'ong No. 98 was performed. Fourteen compositions of each sample were analyzed quantitatively by SEM-EDS and glass samples were classified by multivariate analysis such as PCA. All of 40 samples were confirmed to be Na2O-CaO-SiO2 system with about 20% of Na2O. Samples were classified into two groups by doing PCA on concentrations of 5 major elements(SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, CaO and K2O). Samples included in group I showed the concentration of Al2O3 is about 9.7% and that of CaO, about 2.2%. In group II, concentration of Al2O3 is about 3.2% and that of CaO, about 4.9%. Especially yellow grains embedded in sample No. 12 were shown to be PbSnO3 by micro XRD, which was the first coloring material ever found in Korea. Lead isotope ratios of samples No. 12 and No. 17 which contained lead were measured by TIMS. The origin of lead was traced by means of multivariate analysis such as SLDA. The result showed that lead from southern China and southern Korea had been used for making glass.
