  • Auto ignition of hybrid rocket using $N_2O$ catalytic decomposition was studied in the present study. The hybrid rocket consists of catalytic igniter, solid fuel, combustor, and nozzle. The Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst for $N_2O$ decomposition was synthesized by an impregnation method, and $N_2O$ conversion as reaction temperatures was measured. The temperature change of the catalytic ignitor was measured at the operating condition, and the possibility for the auto ignition of hybrid rocket was validated.

  • In this paper, thermal characteristics of a nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) catalytic reactor with packed-bed geometry are theoretically and numerically investigated. Several researchers experimentally presented that catalytic decomposition of $N_2O$ in a packed bed generates about 82kJ/mole in the exothermic reaction. Based on the results they have studied the catalytic decomposition of $N_2O$ in a packed bed to use it not only as a mono-propellant thrust for small satellites but also as an igniter system for hybrid rockets. So we aim to identify important parameters existing in an $N_2O$ packed-bed geometry, and to clarify its critical effect on thermal characteristics of the catalytic igniter using a porous medium approach.

  • Nitrous oxide ($N_2O$), known as one of the major greenhouse gases, is an important component of the earth's atmosphere, and gives rise to precursor of acid rain and photochemical smog. For the removal of $N_2O$ and other nitrogen oxides, the SCR reaction system with various reductants is widely used. This study is based on the results of experimental and theoretical examinations on the catalytic decomposition of sole nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) and selective catalytic reduction of $N_2O$ with $CH_4$ in the presence of oxygen using mixed metal oxide catalysts obtained from hydrolatcite-type precursors. When $CH_4$ is fed together with a reductant, it affects positively on the $N_2O$ decomposition activity. At an optimum ratio of $CH_4$ to $O_2$ mole ratio, the $N_2O$ conversion activity is enhanced on the SCR reaction with partial oxidation of methane.

  • Catalytic decomposition of nitrous oxide was investigated experimentally. Two noble metal catalyst (Pt, Ir) were chosen to decompose nitrous oxide. Each catalyst was tested with different chamber pressure and preheating temperature. Ir decomposed $N_2O$ at lower temperature ($230^{\circ}C$) and suitable for $N_2O$ decomposition. In addition, the minimum required preheating temperature decreased as the chamber pressure increased. However, deactivation of Ir catalyst was observed during the experiments.

  • Direct catalytic decomposition is a promising method for controlling the emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) from the semiconductor and display industries. In this study, a γ-Al2O3 catalyst was developed to reduce N2O emissions by a catalytic decomposition reaction. The γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by an extrusion method using boehmite powder, and a N2O decomposition test was performed using a catalyst reactor that was approximately 25.4 mm (1 in) in diameter packed with approximately 5 mm of catalysts. The N2O decomposition tests were carried out with approximately 1% N2O at 550 to 750 ℃, an ambient pressure, and a GHSV=1800-2000 h-1. To confirm the N2O decomposition properties and the effect of O2 and steam on the N2O decomposition, nitrogen, air, and air and steam were used as atmospheric gases. The catalytic decomposition tests showed that the 1% N2O had almost completely disappeared at 700 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere. However, air and steam decreased the conversion rate drastically. The long term stability test carried out under an N2 atmosphere at 700 ℃ for 350 h showed that the N2O conversion rate remained very stable, confirming no catalytic activity changes. From the results of the N2O decomposition tests and long-term stability test, it is expected that the prepared γ-Al2O3 catalyst can be used to reduce N2O emissions from several industries including the semiconductor, display, and nitric acid manufacturing industry.

  • $N_2$ doped $TiO_2$ nano-sized powder was prepared using a DC arc plasma jet and investigated with XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, and photo-catalytic decomposition. Recently the research interest about the nano-sized $TiO_2$ powder has been increased to improve its photo-catalytic activity for the removal of environmental pollutants. Nitrogen gas, reacting gas, and titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$) were used as the raw materials and injected into the plasma reactor to synthesize the $N_2$ doped $TiO_2$ power. The particle size and XRD peaks of the synthesized powder were analyzed as a function of the flow rate of the nitrogen gas. Also, the characteristics of the photo-catalytic decomposition using the prepared powder were studied. For comparing the photo-catalytic decomposition performance of $TiO_2$ powder with that of $TiO_2$ coating, $TiO_2$ thin films were prepared by the spin coating and the pulsed laser deposition. For the results of the acetaldehyde decomposition, the photo-catalytic activity of $TiO_{2-x}N_x$ powder was higher than that of the pure $TiO_2$ powder in the visible light region. For the methylene blue decomposition, the decomposition efficiency of $TiO_2$ powder was also higher than that of $TiO_2$ film.

  • The characteristics of nitrous oxide catalytic decomposition were studied to utilize the nitrous oxide as a propellant. The Ru and Pt were selected as nitrous oxide decomposition catalysts and loaded in the $Al_2O_3$ support using an impregnation method. The nitrous oxide conversions as a variation of GHSV and reaction temperature were measured in a tubular reactor. At the low GHSV and high temperature, the conversion was increased, and Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed better performance than Pt/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst.

  • The study on the characteristics of nitrous oxide catalytic decomposition was carried out to utilize the nitrous oxide as a propellant. The Pt, Ir and Ru were synthesized to select a high performance catalyst for the nitrous oxide decomposition reaction. The respective catalyst precursors were loaded in the $Al_2O_3$ support using an wet impregnation method. The $N_2O$ conversion as a variation of space velocity and reaction temperature was measured using a tubular reactor. The catalyst loss was measured to evaluate the durability of catalysts after the reaction at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The $N_2O$ conversion was increased at the decrease of space velocity and at the increase of temperature. The Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst had the highest $N_2O$ conversion at low temperature and the best durability.

  • Combined removal of n-heptane and carbon monoxide (CO) using a plasma-catalytic process was investigated. The performance of the plasma-catalytic process was compared with that of the catalyst-alone process to characterize the decomposition of n-heptane and CO with the operation parameters such as the type of catalyst, reaction temperature, and discharge power. From several sets of experiments, it was found that the decomposition efficiency of n-heptane mainly depended on the specific input energy rather than the reactor temperature, whereas the oxidation of CO on both the energy density and the reaction temperature. The results conducted over several metal oxide catalysts exhibited that the decomposition efficiency of n-heptane was in the order: $Pd/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ru/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3{\approx}Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Especially, $Pd/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst did hardly generate CO as a byproduct during the decomposition of n-heptane under an appropriate condition, revealing $CO_2$ selectivity of nearly 100%. The CO oxidation efficiency was largely affected by the type of catalyst ($Pd/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ru/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$). At temperatures below $180^{\circ}C$, the plasma-catalytic process was more effective in the oxidation of CO, while above $180^{\circ}C$, the catalytic process resulted in slightly higher CO oxidation efficiency.

  • The multi-stage catalytic igniter for hybrid rocket auto ignition is described in this paper. After charging the catalyst and pre-heating the first stage, the $N_2O$ was supplied at the first stage with the low mass flow rate, and then the $N_2O$ with the high flow rate was supplied into the second stage. Even though the $N_2O$ flow rate was high, it was decomposed by supplying the high temperature gas which was evolved from the $N_2O$ decomposition in the first stage. This multi-stage ignitor resulted in the decrease of the ignition time in comparison with the previous ignitor, and confirmed the possibility of $N_2O$ decomposition with the high flow rate using the multi-stage catalytic-ignition system.
