Characteristics of perovskite-structure Sr(Ti1-xFex)O3 thick film gas sensors (페롭스카이트 구조 Sr(Ti1-xFex)O3 후막 가스센서의 특성)

  • Perovskite-structure $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ thick films, in which x is 0.4 or 0.6, were prepared by normal ceramic process on alumina substrate. Electrical resistance was measured as a function of thermal treatment condition including atmosphere, time, and temperature. The resistance of $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ films is lower than those of $SrTiO_3$ or $SrFeO_3$ films. The temperature coefficient of resistance over $550^{\circ}C$ was measured to be 0 for the $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ films after thermal treatment at $1100^{\circ}C$ in air. The sensing property of the films was also measured as a function of temperature and gas such as $O_2$, CO, $CO_2$, NO and $NO_2$. $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ films showed a good sensing property for $O_2$, but no sensing signal for CO, $CO_2$, NO and $NO_2$.

  • In the condition of GHSV=$30000\;hr^{-1}$, $NO_x$ removal yield was higher as mole ratio of $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ for Fe/ZSM-5 was lower regardless of preparation method such as CVD (chemical vapor deposition) and dry impregnation. In addition to this, Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst showed about 50% $NO_x$ removal yield between $350^{\circ}C$ - $400^{\circ}C$ while CO formed significantly. To remove newly formed CO over Fe/ZSM-5, Co-Pt/ZSM-5 was used in conjunction with Fe/ZSM-5 in the series and this demonstrated over 90% removal yield of both NOx and CO at $250^{\circ}C$ and GHSV=$30000\;hr^{-1}$.

  • $Hg^{2+}$-induced aquation trans-[Co(3,2,3-tet)$X_2]^+$(3,2,3-tet = 4,7-diazadecane-1,10-diamine, $X_2\;=\;Cl_2,\;(NO_2)Cl,\;Br_2,\;(NO_2)Br,\;(NO_3)_2)$ complexes was investigated in aqueous solution. The products and the reaction mechanism were confirmed by chromatography, UV/Vis. spectrum, and circular dichroism (CD) spectrum. From the results, $Hg^{2+}$-induced aquation of 3,2,3-tet system has been produced cis-${\beta}$ complex via trans complex. The kinetic studies on $Hg^{2+}$-induced aquation of trans-[Co(3,2,3-tet)$Cl_2]^+$ complex and trans-[Co(3,2,3-tet)$(NO_2)Cl]^+$ complex were also carried out to study the reaction mechanism. The results show that trans-[Co(3,2,3-tet)$Cl_2]^+$ complex undergoes the D(dissociative)-mechanism and trans-[Co(3,2,3-tet)$(NO_2)Cl]^+$ complex $I_d$(interchange dissociavite)-mechanism. In order to confirm steric course for the reaction mechanism, $Hg^{2+}$-induced aquation on trans-[Co(R,R-3,2,3-tet)$Cl_2]^+$ complex to which chiral R,R-3,2,3-tet was coordinated instead of the racemic(R,R:S,S) 3,2,3-tet was used has been examined by CD spectrum. From the results, the final complex was confirmed to be ${\Delta}-cis-{\beta}$-[Co(R,R-3,2,3-tet)$(OH_2)_2]^{3+}$ complex indicating the chirality was retained through whole process.

  • The Kyoto Protocol, that had been in force from February 16, 2005, requires significant reduction in $CO_2$ emissions for all anthropogenic sources containing transportation, industrial, commercial, and residential fields, etc, and automotive emission standards for air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides $(NO_x)$ become more and more tight for improving ambient air quality. This paper has briefly reviewed homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion technology offering dramatic reduction in $CO_2,\;NO_x$ and PM emissions, compared to conventional gasoline and diesel engine vehicles, in an effort of automotive industries and their related academic activities to comply with future fuel economy legislation, e.g., $CO_2$ emission standards and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) in the respective European Union (EU) and United States of America (USA), and to meet very stringent future automotive emission standards, e.g., Tier 2 program in USA and EURO V in EU. In addition, major challenges to the widespread use of HCCI engines in road applications are discussed in aspects of new catalytic emissions controls to remove high CO and unburned hydrocarbons from such engine-equipped vehicles.

  • Perovskite-type oxide $La_{1-x}Sr_xCo_{1-y}Fe_yO_{3-{\delta}}$ sols were prepared by sol-gel method using $La(NO_3)_3{\cdot}xH_2O$, $Sr(NO_3)_2$, $Co(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $Fe(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_2O$ as starting materials. The properties of the perovskite-type oxide sols were investigated by viscometer, FT-IR, TG-DTA and XRD. The prepared sols showed 1.16 cp in average viscosity, and a strong acidic condition of pH 0.5, irrespective of composition of the starting materials. The viscosity of sols at the same volume decreases, but the gelation time of sols, at which the sol viscosity increases rapidly, increases when increasing La concentration in composition of starting materials.

Theoretical Investigation for the Adsorption of Various Gases (COx, NOx, SOx) on the BN and AlN Sheets (N과 AlN 시트에 다양한 기체(COx, NOx, SOx)의 흡착에 관한 이론 연구)

  • The adsorption of various atmospheric harmful gases ($CO_x$, $NO_x$, $SO_x$) on graphene-like boron nitride(BN) and aluminum nitride(AlN) sheets was theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and MP2 methods. The structures were fully optimized at the $B3LYP/6-31G^{**}$ and $CAM-B3LYP/6-31G^{**}$ levels of theory and confirmed to be a local minimum by the calculation of the harmonic vibrational frequencies. The MP2 single-point binding energies were computed at the $CAM-B3LYP/6-31G^{**}$ optimized geometries. Also the zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE) and 50%-basis set superposition error (BSSE) corrections were included. The adsorptions of gases on the BN sheet were predicted to be a physisorption process and the adsorptions of gases on the AlN sheet were predicted to be a physisorption process for $CO_x$ and $NO_x$ but to be a chemisorption process for $SO_x$.

Synthesis and electrochemical properties of layered $Li[Ni_xCo_{1-2x}Mn_x]O_2$ materials for lithium secondary batteries prepared by mechanical alloying (기계적 합금법을 이용한 리튬 2차 전지용 층상 양극물질 $Li[Ni_xCo_{1-2x}Mn_x]O_2$ 의 합성 및 전기화학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The presently commercialized lithium-ion batteries use layer structured LiCoO₂ cathodes. Because of the high cost and toxicity of cobalt, an intensive search for new cathode materials has been underway in recent years. Recently, a concept of a one-to-one solid state mixture of LiNO₂ and LiMnO₂, i.e., Li[Ni/sub 0.5/Mn/sub 0.5/]O₂, was adopted by Ohzuku and Makimura to overcome the disadvantage of LiNiO₂ and LiMnO₂. Li[Ni/sub 0.5/Mn/sub 0.5/]O₂ has the -NaFeO₂ structure, which is characteristic of the layered LiCoO₂ and LiNiO₂ structures and shows excellent cycleability with no indication of spinel formation during electrochemical cycling. Layered Li[Ni/sub x/Co/sub 1-2x/Mn/sub x/]O₂ (x = 0.5 and 0.475) materials with high homogeneity and crystallinity were synthesized using a mechanical alloying method. The Li[Ni/sub 0.475/Co/sub 0.05/Mn/sub 0.475/]O₂ electrode delivers a high discharge capacity of 187 mAh/g between 2.8 and 4.6 V at a high current density of 0.3 mA/㎠(30 mA/g) with excellent cycleability. The charge/discharge and differential capacity vs. voltage studies of the Li[Ni/sub x/Co/sub 1-2x/Mn/sub x/]O₂ (x = 0.5 and 0.475) materials showed only one redox peak up to 50 cycles, which indicates that structural phase transitions are not occurred during electrochemical cycling. The magnitude of the diffusion coefficients of lithium ions for Li[Ni/sub x/Co/sub 1-2x/Mn/sub x/]O₂(x = 0.5 and 0.475) are around 10/sup -9/ ㎠/s measured by the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT).

  • This study deals with $de-SO_X$ and $de-NO_X$ process of a wet scrubber for small size ship engines. The experiment was conducted according to the E3 mode of the $NO_X$ technical code. In order to discharge the sulfur containing flue gas, ditertiarybutyldusulfide was added to the diesel fuel to increase the sulfur content. NO gas, which occupies most of the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, was oxidized into $NO_2$ and absorbed by a wet scrubber. The developed equipment of this work achieved 100% of removal efficiency for highly soluble $SO_2$ gas in an aqueous solution.

Evaluation of the Amount of Gas Generated through Combustion of Wood Charcoal and Agglomerated Charcoal Depending on Air Ventilation (숯과 성형숯의 연소를 통해 배출되는 가스 발생량 및 실내공간 환기량 평가)

  • This study was conducted into combustion characteristics and gases generated by the combustion of charcoal and agglomerated charcoal distributed in the domestic using a combustion chamber based on the average space per crater of a charcoal-grilled restaurant in South Korea. Each of the three types of charcoals and agglomerated wood charcoals was analyzed for fuel and combustion characteristics. In addition, the concentration changes of CO, CO2, NOx, and O2 were measured for 20 minutes depending on ventilation. As a result, CO yield without ventilation was measured in the range of 1390 to 4703 ppm, and CO yield with ventilation decreases about 29.8% to 57.4%. CO2 yield without ventilation was measured in the range of 1.34% to 2.42%, and CO2 yield was about 44.1% to 53.6% when the emission was more than about 1.5% at 10 minutes. The NOx yield was divided into two cases where the NOx yield was continuously increased because of incomplete combustion, emitted ranging from 29 ppm to 47 ppm, and where emission was constant after 1 minute in the range of 9 ppm to 18 ppm. The NOx yield with ventilation tends to be similar to the without ventilation, and NOx yield decreases up to 62.5%. Therefore, it could be used for health risk assessment with the simulation of the usage environment of charcoal and agglomerated wood charcoal.

Study on the Co-firing of Sewage Sludge to a 80 kWth-scale Pulverized Coal Combustion System (80 kWth급 미분탄 연소 시스템에서 하수슬러지 혼소시 연소 특성 연구)

  • Thermochemical treatment of sewage sludge is an energy-intensive process due to its high moisture content. To save the energy consumed during the process, the hydrothermal carbonization process for sewage sludge can be used to convert sewage sludge into clean solid fuel without pre-drying. This study is aimed to investigate co-firing characteristics of the hydrothermally carbonated sewage sludge (HCS) to a pulverized coal combustion system. The purpose of the measurement is to measure the pollutants produced during co-firing and combustion efficiency. The combustion system used in this study is a furnace with a down-firing swirl burner of a $80kW_{th}$ thermal input. Two sub-bituminous coals were used as a main fuel, and co-firing ratio of the sewage sludge was varied from 0% to 10% in a thermal basis. Experimental results show that $NO_x$ is 400 ~ 600 ppm, $SO_x$ is 600 ~ 700 ppm, and CO is less than 100 ppm. Experimental results show that stable combustion was achieved for high co-firing ratio of the HCS. Emission of $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ was decreased for higher co-firing ratio in spite of the higher nitrogen contents in the HCS. In addition, it was found that the pollutant emission is affected significantly by composition of the main fuel, regardless of the co-firing ratios.
