  • The absorption characteristics of water vapor into a LiBr-H$_2$O solution flowing down on finned inclined surfaces are numerically investigated in order to study the absorbing performances of different surface shapes of finned tubes as an absorber element. A three-dimensional numerical model is developed. The momentum, energy, and diffusion equations are solved simultaneously using a finite difference method. In order to obtain the temperature and concentration distributions, the Runge-Kutta and the Successive over relaxation methods are used. The flat, circular, elliptic, and parabolic shapes of the tube surfaces are considered in order to find the optimal surface shapes for absorption. In addition, the effects of the fin intervals and Reynolds numbers are studied. The results show that the absorption mainly happens near the fin tip due to the temperature and concentration gradient, and the absorbing performance of the parabolic surface is better than those of the other surfaces.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the combined heat and mass transfer enhancement using binary nanofluids as the working fluids in a $H_2O$/LiBr absorber. The result of heat and mass transfer experiment with the additives(Arabicgum, 2E1H) showed that the heat and mass transfer performance of binary nanofluid with 2E1H enhanced significantly in comparison with that without additive. In the case of 0.01wt% $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluids with 2E1H, the vapor absorption rate increased up to 77% in comparison with that without additive. The heat transfer rate of 0.01wt% $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluids with 2E1H increased up to 19%. Based on the experimental results, it is recommended that the $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluid be good with 2E1H to improve the heat and mass transfer performance.

  • Binary nanoemulsions which are defined as the, oil-droplet suspensions in binary solution ($H_2O$/LiBr), are developed to enhance the heat and mass transfer performance of absorption refrigeration systems. In this study, a novel two-step method is proposed to prepare the stable oil-in-binary solution (O/S) emulsion. Polymer is used as a steric stabilizer to stabilize the oil-droplets in a strong electrolyte ($H_2O$/LiBr). It is found that the thermal conductivity of the binary nanoemulsion is inversely proportional to the emulsion size while the concentrations of oil and $H_2O$/LiBr are less dominant for the thermal conductivity of binary nanoemulsions.

  • The present study investigated the enhancement of the absorption performance by the spring wrapped around the outer surface of the vertical falling film absorber tube. Heat and mass transfer enhancements were experimentally investigated, and flow visualization was performed to observe the wettability and flow pattern of the solution. The key experimental parameters were spring diameter (0.5, 1.0 mm) and spring pitch (1, 3, 10 mm), film Reynolds number (50~150), and concentration of LiBr-$H_2O$ solution (55, 60, 65 wt%). As the spring diameter was increased, the absorption mass flux, Sherwood number, Nusselt number, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficient were increased The Nusselt and Sherwood numbers showed the maximum at the spring pitch of 3mm, and the ratio of pitch to diameter of approximately 3 and 6 for the spring diamter of 0.5 mm, respectively.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the absorbing characteristics in a vertical falling film type absorber using LiBr-H$H_2O$ solution as working fluids with the concentration of 60 wt%. The experimental apparatus consists of an absorber with the diameter of 17.2 mm and the length of 1150 mm, a generator, an evaporator (condenser), a weak solution tank and a sampling trap device and so on. The parameters were the solution temperatures of 45 and 50$^{\circ}$C, coolant temperatures of 30 and 35$^{\circ}$C, and the film Reynolds numbers from 50 to 150. The pressure drop in the absorber increased as the solution and coolant temperatures decreased. The pressure drop in the absorber increased up to the film Reynolds number of 90, however, decreased at the film Reynolds number above 90. The maximum absorption mass flux was observed at the film Reynolds number of 90. Absorption mass fluxes increased as the coolant temperature decreased. Accordingly, absorption mass fluxes and heat transfer coefficients under the subcooled condition increased more than those under the superheated condition. It is claimed that heat transfer coefficients are deeply affected by the solution temperature more than the coolant temperature within the experimental range.

  • The present study investigated the effect of diameter and length on the absorption performance of a vertical falling film type absorber using $LiBr-H_2$O solution of 60 wt%. The parameters were diameter of absorber (17.2, 23.4, 31.1 mm), length of absorber (771, 1150, 1528 mm), and film Reynolds numbers (50, 70, 90, 110, 130, 150). As the diameter of the absorber was increased, the absorption mass flux, Sherwood number, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficient were increased, in which Sherwood number and heat transfer coefficient were increased up to 13% and 30% respectively. As the length of the absorber was increased, the total absorption rate and heat transfer coefficient were increased by 37% and 35% respectively, while the absorption mass flux was decreased.

  • This study carried out a numerical analysis of the effects of hot waste water supply on the performance of a Type II absorption heat pump. There are two types of hot waste water supply, regular series flow and reverse series flow. Also it investigated the interaction between each type of flow and heat exchange solutions. As the effectiveness of heat exchange solutions increase, the steam generation and (COP) increase as well. If the effectiveness of a heat exchange solution is lower than 0.566, the steam generation rate of the reverse flow is lower than that of the regular series flow. A high effectiveness of heat exchange solution is therefore required to make a larger amount of steam in reverse series flow than with ordinary series flow. The COP difference between the two types of flow decreases with the increasing effectiveness of the heat exchange solution. Thus, a reverse flow type absorption heat pump can match the high steam generation rate and COP of the ordinary flow type when a highly effective heat exchange solution is applied.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate heat and mass transfer characteristics in a vertical falling film type absorber using LiBr-$H_2O$ solution with 6owt%. The experimental apparatus consisted of an absorber with inner diameter of 17.2 mm and length of 1150mm, a generator, an evaporator/condenser, a solution tank, a sampling trap etc. The parameters were solution temperature of 45 and $50^{\circ}C$, coolant temperature of 30 and $35^{\circ}C$, and film Reynolds numbers from 50 to 150. Pressure drop in the absorber increased as solution and coolant temperatures decreased. Pressure drop in the absorber increased up to the film Reynolds number of 90, and then decreased at the further increase of the Reynolds number above 90. The maximum absorption mass flux observed at the film Reynolds number of 90. Absorption mass flukes increased as coolant temperature decreased. Absorption mass fluxes and heat transfer coefficients under subcooled condition were larger than those under superheated condition. Heat transfer coefficients were affected by solution temperature more than coolant temperature. The maximum absorption effectiveness under the subcooled condition was 23% for coolant temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and 31% for coolant temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ under the present experimental conditions.

  • The objectives of the present work is to investigate the influence of the solution cooled absorber(SCA), refrigerant drain heat exchanger(RSX), exhaust gas/solution heat exchanger(ESX) and high efficiency solution heat exchanger on COP for a double-effect series-flow absorption chiller. A simulation program has been prepared for the cycle analysis of absorption chillers. As a result, Solution heat exchangers(LSX, HSX) are a most effective element for the COP than the others. In spite of the poor contribution to COP, SCA make a rule to reduce the crystallization phenomena of LiBr solution at solution heat exchanger. And the optimum solution split ratio are varied with the relative size of RSX and LSX.
