Structural Characterization of Incommensurate Misfit Layer Compound $(LaS)_xVS_2(x\approx 1.18)$ (비정합 결정구조를 갖는 $(LaS)_xVS_2(x\approx 1.18)$의 결정구조적 특성연구)

  • Single crystals of misfit layered (LaS)xVS2(x 1.18) were grown using LaCl3(or I2) as a mineralizer (or transport agent) for the single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Procession photographs of (LaS)xVS2(x 1.18) were analyzed as the stacking structure of two kinds of LaS-and VS2-subcell. The result shows that two sublattices have common periodicities along the a*-and c*-axes, respectively, but not along the b*-axis. Sublattice dimensions of LaS and VS2 layers along b-axis were 5.67$\AA$ and 3.42$\AA$, respectively. Their ratio was 1.657 which is very close to 5/3.

  • In this study, the optimum amount of hybrid inhibitors i.e. L-Arginine (LA) and sodium phosphate tribasic dodecahydrate (SP), applied for carbon steel rebar in simulated pore concrete (SCP) solution contaminated with 3.5 wt.% NaCl, was discovered. The corrosion inhibition performance of hybrid inhibitors was investigated by open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization. The highest corrosion inhibition efficiency was found as 99.52% corresponding to 2% LA and 0.25% SP after 210 h exposure. Anodic type inhibition action was confirmed by potentiodynamic polarization study. Surface studies including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to figure out the surface morphology of the steel rebar treated with hybrid inhibitors in order to collaborate with electrochemical studies.

  • The reactions of Ru(tpy)Cl3 (tpy = 2,2';6',2"-terpyridine) with new N,N,C-terdentate ligands, 3,2'-annulated-6-(2"-pyridyl)-2-phenylpyridines (1, HL) and the properties of their Ru(II) complexes are described. The distribution ratio of the two possible Ru(II) complexes, a pentaaza-coordinated complex [Ru(tpy)(1-N,N')Cl]+ and a cycloruthenated complex [Ru(tpy)(La-N,N',C)]+ are highly dependent on the length of the polymethylene unit. The trimethylene bridge of the N,N,C-terdentate in pentaaza-coordinated complex is rigid enough to induce an asymmetry in the complex.

  • The Grignard coupling reaction of bis(chloromethyl)diorganosilanes [(ClCH2)2SiR1R2: R1 = R2 = Me, la; R1 = Me, R2 = Ph, lb; R1 = R2 = Ph, lc] with diorganodichlorosilanes [(Cl2SiR3R4: R3 = R4 = Me, 2a; R3 = Me, R4 = Ph, 2b; R3 = R4 = Ph, 2c] at THE reflux temperature gave the intermolecular C-Si coupling product of 1,1,3,3-tetraorgano-1,3-disilacyclobutanes 3a-f in poor to moderate yields ranging from 7% to 50% along with polydiorganosilapropanes. The cyclization reaction of la-c with methyl-substituted dichlorosilanes 2a, b gave 1,3-disilacyclobutanes 3a-c, e, d in moderate yields (42-50%), while the same reaction with dichlorodiphenylsilane (2c) to 1,3-disilacyclobutanes 3d, f resulted in low yield (7-18%) probably due to the steric hindrance of two-phenyl groups on the silicon of 2c.

  • Chloride form anion exchange resin was used to separate one of the elements from the rare earth mixture using respectable Ln-EDTA eluent. $Sm^{3+}$, $La^{3+}$ or $Ce^{4+}$ complexed with EDTA was passed through the resin column and eluted with a Sm-EDTA solution as an eluent. Here all the rare earth element ions except $Sm^{3+}$ were passed. Adsorbed $Sm^{3+}$ in resin was eluted with 1.0 M HCl solution. If La-EDTA solution as an eluent was used to separate lanthanum ions, lanthanum ions were eluted together with other rare earth elements. When Ce-EDTA solution was also used for separation of $Ce^{4+}$, it was eluted in the region of other rare earth elements. In the case of Sm-EDTA elution, the elution mechanism was as follows : Absorption : $RCl+Ln-Y^-{\leftrightarrows}RLnY+Cl^-$, Sm-EDTA elution : $RLnY+Sm-Y^-{\leftrightarrows}RSmY+Ln-Y^-$, HCl elution : $RSmY+HCl{\leftrightarrows}RCl+Sm-Y^-$.

Rare earth removal from pyroprocessing fuel product for preparing MSR fuel

  • A series of experiments were performed to produce a fuel source for a molten salt reactor (MSR) through pyroprocessing technology. A simulated LiCl-KCl-UCl3-NdCl3 salt system was prepared, and the U element was fully recovered using a liquid cadmium cathode (LCC) by applying a constant current. As a result, the salt was purified with an UCl3 concentration lower than 100 ppm. Subsequently, the U/RE ingot was prepared by melting U and RE metals in Y2O3 crucible at 1473 K as a surrogate for RE-rich ingot product from pyroprocessing. The produced ingot was sliced and used as a working electrode in LiCl-KCl-LaCl3 salt. Only RE elements were then anodically dissolved by applying potential at - 1.7 V versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The RE-removed ingot product was used to produce UCl3 via the reaction with NH4Cl in a sealed reactor.

Electrical and Optical Properties of PLZT Ceramics Prepared by Flux Method (용융염 합성법에 의한 PLZT 세라믹스의 제작과 그 전기적.광학적 특성)

  • $(Pb_{1-x} La_x)(Zr_{0.65} Ti_{0.35})_{1-x/4}O_3$ (PLZT X/65/35) powders were prepared by molten salt synthesis using NaCl-K Cl and conventional calcining of oxides. The effects of molten salt on formation and charactrization of PLZT powder and on dielectric piezolectric and optical properties of PLZT ceramics were studied, The completed PLZT powder formation in the presence of fused salt was attained at 50-10$0^{\circ}C$ lower temperature than that in solid state reaction and the particle size of the powder made by molten salt synthesis was markedly increased with increasing calcining temperature. The substitution of Na and/or K ions in NaCl-KCl for Pb ion in process of molten salt synthesis was increased with increasing La concentration Z. These substituted Na and/or K ions were identified as the origins of decreasing coupl-ing factor and optical transmittance of PLZT ceramics.

On the $SnO_2$ Semiconductor Gas Sensor ($SnO_2$ 소결체 반도체 Gas Sensor에 관한 연구)

  • The sensitivity characteristics of $SnO_2$-based gas sensor prepared by sintering method have been studied at the presence of CO and Propane gas. Samples mixed with 1wt% $La_2O_3$ and 1wt% $PdCl_2$ showed highest sensitivity to CO and propane gas at 250$^{\circ}$C but the addition of $CeO_2$ did not enhance the sensitivity. For slectivity for gas a $SnO_2-La_2O_3$ (1wt%) sample without $PdCl_2$ showed better results.   • Tripterygium regelii SPRAGUE is distributed in Korea and Northern China. This extract has been used as a herb medicine, especially antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying agent in East asia. During our research to develop new antitumor agents from natural products, Dichlorornethane (CH$_2$Cl$_2$) extract of Tripterygium regelii SPRAGUE (DTR) showed the potent apoptotic effects in A-549 lung cancer, HeLa-3 cervical cancer, SKMEL-2 melanoma cells in a dose-dependent manner. in order to purify major compounds from DTR, column chromatography was carried out gradually. Silica gel and RP-18 column chromatography for active fractions led to the isolation of a compound. The compound determined by 1 H-NMR was turned out to De Celastrol known to have antitumor activity.

  • Commercially available PTCR (Postive Temperature Coefficient of Resistivity) ceramics which have low room temperature resistance, high PTC effect and temperature coefficient were prepared by La3+ doped semiconducting barium calcium titanate soild solutions. PTCR characteristics were remarkably improved by addition of AST (1/3 Al2O3$.$3/4SiO2$.$1/4TiO2) and MnCl2. That can be explained by formation of liquid phase during sintering and acceptor level on the intergranular layer. Resistivity anormaly increased with decreasing cooling rate. Optimum manufacturing conditions were cooling rate below 100$.$C/hr, Ca and Mn content of 4 mol% &, 0.09-0.12mol% respectively.
