Nutrient utilization and plasma level of minerals were studied in lactating crossbred cows fed diet supplemented from different source of minerals. Twelve crossbred cows of first to third lactation during their mid stage of lactation were distributed equally under two groups and were fed concentrate mixture, green fodder (para grass) and finger millet straw as per requirement. Cows in group I were fed concentrate mixture supplemented with 1% mineral mixture whereas cows in group II were not supplemented with mineral mixture in the concentrate mixture but were offered additional quantity of green fodder (1 kg DM/cow/day) to compensate for the requirement of minerals. Balance study conducted towards the end of 120 days of feeding experiment indicated that the total dry matter intake in both the groups did not differ significantly. The cows in group II offered additional quantity of green fodder consumed significantly (p<0.05) more of green fodder (5.11 vs. 4.51 kg /animal/day) and the cows in group I consumed significantly (p<0.01) more of finger millet straw (1.71 vs. 0.92 kg/animal/day). The digestibility of major nutrients did not differ between the groups except for ether extract which was significantly (p<0.05) lower in cows fed additional green fodder. The total daily intake of P, Cu, Fe and Co did not differ significantly in both the groups whereas significantly higher intakes of Ca, Mg, Zn and Mn were observed in cows supplemented with inorganic source of minerals. However, supplementation through both the sources could meet the mineral requirement in group I and group II. The gut absorption (%) of all the minerals was comparable between the groups except for Mg which was significantly (p<0.05) higher in cows supplemented mineral mixture. The net retention of all the minerals was significantly more in the group supplemented with inorganic source of minerals. Except for P, Mg and Co the retention as percentage of total intake was comparable for all minerals in both the groups. Irrespective of source of mineral supplementation the average monthly blood plasma mineral levels (Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe) were within the normal range and comparable between the groups. Lower level of Cu observed at the start of the experimental feeding in both the groups increased with the advancement of supplemental feeding. The plasma Zn and Fe content in cows of both the groups did not vary. The blood plasma level of some minerals (Ca, P, Mg and Cu) was significantly higher towards the end of experimental feeding as compared to the initial values due to the reduction in milk yield with advancement of lactation or due to supplemental effect of minerals. It could be concluded that supplementation of minerals through inorganic source is better utilized in terms of retention as compared to green fodder (para grass), which is a moderate source of most nutrients.

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal amount of 2 ingredients, i.e., black barley flour ($X_1$), and olive oil ($X_2$), for the production of white pan bread from black barley flour. The experiment was designed according to the central composite design of response surface methodology, which showed 10 experimental points, including 2 replicates for black barley flour and olive oil. Significant differences were found in the results of the physical and mechanical properties analysis of each sample, including weight (p<0.05), volume (p<0.01), specific loaf volume (p<0.01), color L (p<0.01), color a (p<0.001), color b (p<0.05), hardness (p<0.001), springiness (p<0.01), cohesiveness (p<0.01), gumminess (p<0.001) and chewiness (p<0.05). Significant differences in the sensory measurements were observed in color (p<0.01), appearance (p<0.01), texture (p<0.05), taste (p<0.05) and overall quality (p<0.05). The optimum formulation, which was calculated using the numerical and graphical methods, was determined to be 18.00% black barley flour and 1.80% olive oil.
In this study, the antioxidant activities of 27 medicinal herbs and plants were measured. The dried medicinal herbs and plants were pulverized and extracted by water, 15% ethanol, and 45% ethanol, respectively at above $80^{circ}C$ for 90 minutes. The original and diluted extracts were tested for their antioxidant activities by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging activity assay. Cornus officinalis (C) and Scutellaria baicalensis (S) were selected to develop rice wines with higher antioxidant activities, based on the result of the 45% ethanol extraction. The rice wine developed using sample showed the highest antioxidant activity as comparing to those of other commercial rice wines. The rice wine samples were analyzed for titratable acidity, pH, $^{\circ}Brix$, reducing sugar content, color (L, a, b), amino-acidity, and ultraviolet absorption. The preferences for color, aroma, and overall acceptability were determined using a 9-point hedonic scale by 150 consumers. The sweetness, sourness, fruitiness, color, and medicinal herb-taste levels of the developed rice wines were also evaluated, using a 9-point just-about-right scale. The mean overall acceptability score of c (5.54) was higher than that of sample S. Based on the results, the sourness and medicinal herb-taste levels of sample s should be modified to higher levels, and the fruitiness of sample S also needs to be adjusted. For a future study, the final compositions of the developed rice wines will be adjusted for product launching based on the preference test data acquired in this study.
The in vivo effect of tyrosinase inhibitors in the melanogenesis of gold fish (jet black color) was evaluated by measuring surface color and observing melanin pigment. The fish was firstly cultivated in 0.9% NaCl solution for 1 week to induce melanogenesis, and then, it was transferred to each treatment group containing tyrosinase inhibitor. The fish was grouped into control. food additive group (addition of 5 mM glutathione, 5 mM cysteine, and 1 mM benzoic acid), microbial inhibitor group (addition of culture broth of Aspergillus oryzae in shiitake and glucose medium), and plant extract group (addition of the mixed extracts of green tea, beet, red chicory, and nameko). After 6 days, the fish was anesthetized by electric shock, and color of pectoral region, lateral region, and dorsal fin was measured. Hunter's L and b values of treated group were generally higher than those of control group, indicating that the tyrosinase inhibitors could inhibit the melanogenesis of the fish. Effect of plant extract was apparent, though relatively weak, not because it did not work in vivo, but because a sufficient amount of extract could not be added to fish globes. If a large amount of extract was added, fish gradually died due to a microbial contamination. Microscopic observation of melanin in lateral scale and dorsal fin showed that in the treated groups with tyrosinase inhibitors, the number of melanophore per unit area and the size of one melanophore decreased.

This study investigated the effects of teff flour on the properties of pound cakes. Five types of pound cakes were made by addition of 0% (Control), 5% (TF5), 10% (TF10), 15% (TF15), and 20% (TF20) of teff flour based on wheat flour. Specific gravity of pound cake batter showed no significant differences among samples as 0.54 (p<0.05). Baking loss was the highest in the control at 5.92% and the lowest in TF20 at 5.27%. Batter yield was the highest in TF20 at 94.73% and the lowest in control at 94.08%. Moisture content was the highest in TF20 at 23.68% and the lowest in control at 21.32%. pH showed no significant differences among samples at 7.61~7.65 (p<0.05). a-values of crumb significantly increased while L-values and b-values significantly decreased with added teff flour amounts. (p<0.05). ${\Delta}E$ values significantly increased with teff flour at 34.32~49.24 (p<0.05). Hardness was lowest in TF20 at $180.60g/cm^2$. Springiness was the lowest in TF20 at 85.37%. Cohesiveness showed no significant differences among samples (p<0.05). Chewiness was the lowest in TF20 at 172.17 g. Hardness more rapidly increased in control at $273.13{\sim}26,123.33g/cm^2$ than that of pound cakes with teff flour. Avrami exponent (n) was the highest in the control at 3.5987 and the lowest in TF20 at 1.2144. In sensory evaluation, flavor of TF20 was higher than that of the control at 4.43. Overall acceptability had a higher score in TF20 than in the control. It is considered that addition of 20% teff flour can improve the quality characteristics and retard retrogradation of pound cake.
Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) are halogenated aromatic compounds with the empirical formula $C_{12}$$H_{10-n}$C $l_{n}$(n=1~10), and are a mixture of possible 209 different chlorinated congeners. PCBs were widely used as dielectric fluids for capacitors and transformers, plasticizers, lubricant inks and paint addirives. Once released into the environment, PCBs persist for years because they are so resistant to degradation. In addition to their persistence in the environment, PCBs in ecological food chains undergo biomagnification because of their high degree of lipophilicity. In 1970s, the worldwide production of PCBs was ceased and the import of PCBs was prohibited since 1983 in Korea. In spite of these actions, many PCBs seems to be still in use. The environmental load of PCBs will continue to be recycled through air, land, water, and the biosphere for decades to come. This study was conducted to measure the concentrations of PCBs in the serum samples of 112 women by GC/MSD and GC/ECD. The main results of this study were as follows. 1. PCBs were detected in all samples. The mean $\pm$SD levels of PCBs in the serum were 3.613$\pm$0.759 ppb, and median were 3.828 ppb. 2. The correlation coefficients of the concentrations of 13 PCB congeners were from minimum, 0.7913 to maximum, 0.9985, and all was significant(p=0.0001). The correlation coefficient between the concentrations of PCBs and p,p'-DDE was 0.9641(p=0.0001). 3. There was a positive association between age and PCBs' concentrations (simple linear regression ; $R^2$=0.86, $\beta$=0.08023, p<0.001). 4. There was a positive association between total lipids in the serum and PCBs' concentrations (simple linear regression ; $R^2$=0.7058, $\beta$=0.00486, p<0.001). 5. For possible predictors of PCBs and p,p' -DDE levels in the serum, age adjusted model (Y=$\beta$$_{0}$+$\beta$$_1$age+ $B_2$X) was applied. For BMI, major residential area, wether to eat caught fish by angling, where to eat caught fish by angling(by parents in the past), fish consumption, meat consumption, meat consumption, and dairy consumption, there was no association. For total conception frequency and lactation frequency and lactation period, there was negative association.ion.
This experiment was conducted in the paddy field to investigate the influence of bensulfuron (methyl-2-[[[[[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]amino]sulfonil]methyl]benzoate)+butachlor (N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl acetanilide) and bensulfuron+mefenacet(2-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yloxy)-N-methylacetanilide) for seedling age of rice with Dongjinbyeo of medium-late-maturing variety, Hwaseongbyeo of medium-maturing variety and Namwonbyeo of early-maturing variety. Two herbicide applications interfered with the early growth of all rice varieties, the root was especially damaged more than the shoot. The phytotoxicity of bensulfuron+butachlor and bensulfuron+mefenacet was not significant statistically and the phytotoxicity of these herbicides for seedling age was apt to be similar, also. Twenty and 35days seedlings of Dongjinbyeo and Hawseongbyeo had more growth amount than 8days seedlings, but Namwonbyeo had opposite trend. The number of maximum tillers in the plots applied herbicides were fewer than untreated control but, the percentage of productive tillers was higher than those. Heading date for Namwonbyeo was delayed 2, 1-2 and 2-3days on 35, 20 and 8days seedlings by herbicide application, respectively.
An Actinomycetes strain, MSA-1, containing antimicrobial component was isolated from the black sponge, Halichondzia okadai, and was identified to a genus level by morphological and chemotaxonornic methods. The gray colored spores were oval type with smooth surface and formed flexibilis spore chains. The cell wall of this strain was type I containing D-aminopimellic acid (D-DAP) and no specific sugar was detected. Phospholipid of the cell membrane was PII type including phophoethanolamine and the major fatty acids of total lipid were branched anteiso-15 : 0, iso-16 : 0, 16 : 0 and iso-17 ; 0. From these results and other characteristics described in the Bergey's Manual, this strain was identificated as a Streptomyces sp. Meanwhile, 10mg of pale yellow colored antimicreobial component was isolated by HPLC method from the cultured Streptomyces sp. (70g of cryophillized mycellis). By crystallographyc analysis, HIRESMS and NMR assignment, the antimicrobial component produced from the strain MSA-1 was elucidated as the staurosporine (indolo[2,3-a]carbazole alkaloid).

Background: Cell division cycle 6 (CDC6) is an essential regulator of DNA replication and plays important roles in the activation and maintenance of the checkpoint mechanisms in the cell cycle. CDC6 has been associated with oncogenic activities in human cancers; however, the clinical significance of CDC6 in prostate cancer (PCa) remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated whether the CDC6 mRNA expression level is a diagnostic and prognostic marker in PCa. Methods: The study subjects included 121 PCa patients and 66 age-matched benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients. CDC6 expression was evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical (IH) staining, and then compared according to the clinicopathological characteristics of PCa. Results: CDC6 mRNA expression was significantly higher in PCa tissues than in BPH control tissues (P = 0.005). In addition, CDC6 expression was significantly higher in patients with elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels (> 20 ng/mL), a high Gleason score, and advanced stage than in those with low PSA levels, a low Gleason score, and earlier stage, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that high expression of CDC6 was significantly associated with advanced stage (${\geq}T3b$) (odds ratio [OR], 3.005; confidence interval [CI], 1.212-7.450; P = 0.018) and metastasis (OR, 4.192; CI, 1.079-16.286; P = 0.038). Intense IH staining for CDC6 was significantly associated with a high Gleason score and advanced tumor stage including lymph node metastasis stage (linear-by-linear association, P = 0.044 and P = 0.003, respectively). Conclusion: CDC6 expression is associated with aggressive clinicopathological characteristics in PCa. CDC6 may be a potential diagnostic and prognostic marker in PCa patients.
This study focuses on the use of rice in the production of gluten-free rice udon (GFU) through an optimized mixing ratio, using the Box-Behnken response surface methodology (RSM). Different additional levels of rice flour (A, 40-60 g), acetylated distarch adipate (B, 10-20 g), and trehalose (C, 0-3 g) were used as variables, while water absorption level, volume, cooking loss, solid yield, lightness, texture properties, proximate compositions of GFU and turbidity of cooking water were set as responses in the RSM design model. The optimum mixing ratio for the preparation of gluten-free rice udon was obtained for 60.00 g of rice flour, 18.81 g of acetylated distarch adipate without the addition of trehalose. The response values of the optimized samples were water absorption (60.94%), volume (34.94%), turbidity of the cooking water (0.37), cooking loss (4.77%), solid yield (1.55 g), lightness value (70.04), hardness (2.53 N), springiness (0.18), gumminess (10.45 N), chewiness (1.83 N), and cohesiveness (2.89). This study has shown that rice flour can replace wheat flour to manufacture udon at an optimized mixing ratio successfully derived by statistical estimation method.
