  • last few decades. In this study, the lyophilized cells of Pleurotus eryngii (mushroom) were used as an inexpensive biosorbent for Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The effect of various physicochemical factors on Cd(II) and Pb(II) biosorption such as pH (2.0-7.0), initial metal concentration ($0.0-300mg\;L^{-1}$), temperature, fungal biomass and contact time (0-120 min) were studied. Optimum pH for removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) was 6.0, and the contact time was 45 min at room temperature. The nature of biosorbent and metal ion interaction was evaluated by Infrared (IR) spectroscopic technique. IR analysis of mushroom biomass revealed the presence of amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl and methyl groups, which are responsible for biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II). The maximum adsorption capacities of P. eryngii for Pb(II) and Cd(II) calculated using Langmuir adsorption isotherm were 82.0 and $16.13mg\;g^{-1}$, respectively. The adsorption isotherms for two biosorbed heavy metals were fitted well with Freundlich isotherm as well as Langmuir model with correlation coefficient ($r^2$>0.99). Thus, this study indicated that the P. eryngii is an efficient biosorbent for the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.

  • The distribution patterns of the benthic macrofauna of Han Estuary and Kyonggi Bay and the controlling environmental factors were studied at twenty-five stations in spring and fall of 1989. As a result, four biological groups were established as follows : Crassostrea gigas-Balanus reticulatus (Group I), Heteromastus filiformis-Mediomastus californiensis-Lumbrineris spp. -Sternaspis scutata-Tharyx sp. 1-Diopatra bilobata (Group II-A), Haustoriids-Phoxocephalids-Moerella rutila (Group II-B) and Nephtys chemulpoensis (Group II-C in March) and indistinctive group which was composed of common species (II-C in September). Results of the habitat analysis revealed that most of the dominant species showed narrow ranges of habitat niche in March and relatively wide ranges in September. Based on multiple discriminant analysis, the critical environmental factors governing their distributions are salinity in the regions of Yomha and Sokmo Channel in Han Estuary and sediment types in Kyonggi Bay. Also, sediment instability during the rainy season due to run-off was assumed to play a major role in the species composition of the benthic communities and their distribution in the study area.

  • Objective : Clinical features of pituitary hemorrhage vary from asymptomatic to catastrophic. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors related to severity of hemorrhage of pituitary adenoma. Methods : Pituitary hemorrhage was noted in 32 of 88 patients who underwent operations between January 2000 and December 2007. Clinical status was classified into group I (no hemorrhage symptoms), II (mild to moderate symptoms without neurological deficit), and III (with neurological deficit), and was compared to radiological, pathological, and operative findings. All patients were operated by transsphenoidal approach, and hemorrhage-related symptoms were relieved. Results : Groups I, II,and III comprised 15, 10 and 7 patients, respectively. In group I, hemorrhage volume was under 1 mL in 11 (73.3%), but, it was above 1 mL in 7 (70%) of group II and in all cases of group III. Hemorrhage stage based on MRI findings was chronic or subacute in 11 (73.3%) of group I, acute in 6 (60%) of group II, and acute or hyperacute in 6 (85.7%) of group III. Pathological examination revealed chronic-stage hematomas in 5 (50%) group II patients. Functioning adenomas were found in 5 (33.3%) group I patients but none in group II or III patients. Silent adenomas were found in 4 (26.7%), 8 (80%), and 3 (42.9%) in groups I, II,and III, respectively. Conclusion : Clinical features of pituitary hemorrhage may differ with the radiological and immunohistopathlogical findings. Persistent symptoms are related to the chronic stage of hematoma requiring surgery for symptom relief. Neurological deficits are caused by large amount of acute hemorrhage requiring emergency operation. Silent adenoma is related to the severity of pituitary hemorrhage.

  • Background: The Korean Shoulder Scoring System (KSS) is a reliable and valid procedure for discriminative assessment of the clinical status of patients with rotator cuff tears. This study evaluates the correlation between the preoperative KSS and factors in patients with rotator cuff tears. Methods: From November 2009 to June 2016, 970 patients who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were retrospectively evaluated. A total of 490 patients met the study criteria. Preoperative factors included age, sex, symptom duration, mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) tear size, acromiohumeral distance (AHD), tangent sign, tendon involvement (type I, supraspinatus; type II, supraspinatus and subscapularis; type III, supraspinatus and infraspinatus; type IV, all 3 tendons), fatty infiltration of rotator cuff muscles (group I, Goutallier stages 0 and 1; group II, Goutallier stages 2, 3, and 4), and KSS. Results: Old age, ML tear size, and AP tear size negatively correlated with the preoperative KSS (p<0.001). AHD showed a positive correlation with the preoperative KSS (p<0.001). A significantly inferior preoperative KSS was found in females and type III tendon involvement (p<0.001). For supraspinatus and infraspinatus, the preoperative KSS of group II fatty infiltration showed a significantly lower score than group I fatty infiltration (p<0.05). Conclusions: A relatively lower preoperative KSS was associated with old age, large tear size, narrow AHD, female, type III tendon involvement, and group II fatty infiltration of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus. Our study indicates that preoperative KSS can be a good measurement for the preoperative status of patients with rotator cuff tears.

  • We propose the Bayesian testing for the equality of K-exponential populations means with Type-II censored data. Specially we use the fractional Bayesian factors suggested by O'Hagan (1995) based on the noninformative priors for the parameters. And, we investigate the usefulness of the proposed Bayesian testing procedures via both real data analysis and simulations and compare the classical likelihood ratio(LR) test with the proposed Bayesian test.

  • The importance of the kidney in the development of hypertension was first demonstrated by Goldblatt and his colleagues more than fifty years ago. Many hormones and other regulatory factors have been proposed to play a major role in the development of hypertension. Among these factors angiotensia II (ANG II) is closely involved in renal hypertension development since it directly regulates $Na^+$ reabsorption in the renal proximal tubule. Thus the aim of the present study was to examine signaling pathways of low dose of ANC II on the $Na^+$ uptake of primary cultured rabbit renal proximal tubule cells (PTCs) in hormonally defined seum-free medium. The results were as follows: 1) $10^{-11}$ M ANG II has a significant stimulatory effect on growth as compared with control. Alkaline phosphatase exhibited significantly increased activity. However, leucine aminopeptidase and ${\gamma}-glutamyl$ transpeptidase activity were not significant as compared with control. In contrast to $10^{-11}$ M ANG II stimulated $Na^+$ uptake $(108.03{\pm}2.16% of that of control)$, $10^{-9}$ M ANG II inhibited ($92.42{\mu}2.23%$ of that of control). The stimulatory effect of ANG II on $Na^+$ uptake was amiloride-sensitive and inhibited by losartan (ANG II receptor subtype 1 antagonist) and not by PD123319 (ANG II receptor subtype 2 antagonist). 2) Pertussis toxin (PTX) alone inhibited $Na^+$ uptake by $85.52{\pm}3.52%$ of that of control. In addition, PTX pretreatment prevented the AMG II-induced stimulation of $Na^+$ uptake. 8-Bromoadenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (8-Br-cAMP), forskolin, and isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX) alone inhibited $Na^+$ uptake by $88.79{\pm}2.56,\;80.63{\pm}4.38,\;and\;84.47{\pm}4.74%$ of that of control, respectively, and prevented the ANG II-induced stimulation of $Na^+$ uptake. However, $10^{-11}$ M ANG II did not stimulate cAMP production. 3) The addition of 12-O-te-tradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA, 0.01 ng/ml) to the PTCs produced significant increase in $Na^+$ uptake ($114.43{\pm}4.05%$ of that of control). When ANG II and TPA were added together to the PTCs, there was no additive effect on $Na^+$ uptake. Staurosporine alone had no effect on $Na^+$ uptake, but led to a complete inhibition of ANG II- or TPA-induced stimulation of Na'uptake. ANG II treatment resulted in a $111.83{\mu}4.51%$ increase in total protein kinase C (PKC) activity. In conclusion, the PTX-sensitive PKC pathway is the main signaling cascade involved in the stimulatory effects of ANG II on $Na^+$ uptake in the PTCs.

  • Jung-Pyun is a traditional steamed rice bread made of fermented rice dough. A series of the Jung-Puyn samples were prepared according to the experimental design of five factors. Factors were fermentation sources(milky rice wine, activated yeast), weight of added water(60, 65, 70, 75% of rice powder), fermentation temperature(30$^{\circ}C$, 40$^{\circ}C$), fermentation times(2,3,4,5,6,12hours) and weight of added baking powder(1, 2% of rice powder). Trained panels judged the steamed rice bread samples to determine the effects of these factors on the sensory characteristics. The results of sensory evaluation revealed that the most preferable steamed rice bread on the overall eating quality was at the 70% adding water and 1% baking powder, 30$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours incubation made by 1% addition of yeast.

  • This paper addresses the Bayesian hypotheses testing for the comparison of exponential population under type II censoring. In Bayesian testing problem, conventional Bayes factors can not typically accommodate the use of noninformative priors which are improper and are defined only up to arbitrary constants. To overcome such problem, we use the recently proposed hypotheses testing criterion called the intrinsic Bayes factor. We derive the arithmetic, expected and median intrinsic Bayes factors for our problem. The Monte Carlo simulation is used for calculating intrinsic Bayes factors which are compared with P-values of the classical test.
