Effects of $Fe_2O_3$ Addition on the Properties of MgO and Dolomite (마그네시아와 돌로마이트의 특성에 미치는 $Fe_2O_3$ 의 첨가영향)

  • MgO clinker and two kinds of dolomite clinkers with different microstructures and CaO contents were used as starting materials, and the effects of Fe2O3 addition on the properties of MgO and dolomite were investigated in the range of 2 to 8 wt% of Fe2O3 content. Secondary phases contributed to densification of MgO-Fe2O3 and dolomite-Fe2O3 were magnesioferrite and dicalciumferrite, respectively. Sinterabilities of MgO-Fe2O3 and dolomite-Fe2O3 were directly proportional to the amount of secondary phases. Also, sinterability of dolomite itself was dependent on the microstructure of starting material including distribution of CaO and MgO as well as the addition amount of Fe2O3. The flexural strength of MgO-Fe2O3 content was almost constant. The hydration resistance of dolomite with large size of MgO and discontinuous distribution of CaO was higher than that of dolomite with small size of MgO and continuous distribution of CaO. Also, the minimum content of Fe2O3 to prevent they hydration of dolomite was about 4wt%. As increasing Fe2O3 content, the penetration resistance of MgO-Fe2O3 was improved by the increment of magnesioferrite. On the other hand, the penetration resistance of dolomite-Fe2O3 was decreased because of the increment of dicalciumferrite having low melting point.

  • Sr-ferrite having magnetoplumbite structure is similar to Ba-ferrite in magnetic characteristics, but better magnetic characteristics for using motor application. To improve remanence magnetic flux density(Br) and coercive force(iHc), it is necessary that sintered ferrites must have high density and grain size less than 1 $\mu$m. By varying n values in SrO.nFe2O3 basic composition, calcination temperature, and BaO addition, Sr-ferrite powder and sintered specimen was prepared. The n values, calcination temperature, and BaO addition affected secondary phase formation, particle size, and particle shape. BaO addition enhanced Fe2O3 secondary phase and hexagonal shape particle. Fe2O3 phase reduced sintered density which greatly decreased Br.

Effect of Fe2+/Fe3+ Ratio on the Crystallization of the Scoria Glass (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 System) (Scoria 유리(CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2계)의 결정화에 미치는 Fe2+/Fe3+비 효과)

  • The glass-ceramics was prepared with the scoria(CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system) of the locally occurring volcanic ejecta containing 10-13w/o of (FeO+Fe2O3) by melting at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours and thermally treated for nucleation and crystallization. The sucrose was added to the scoria to adjust the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio during the melting process. The addition of 1-2w/o of sucrose showed the glass-ceramics body with the finest particle developed and dispersed over the entire range. It is concluded that the impurity content of iron oxide and titanium oxide play the most-influencial effect on the crystallization. When 1-2w/o of sucrose was added to the scoria, the value of Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio was 0.93-1.32 and showed the best result of crystallization. The nucleation temperature and time were calculated by the measurements of exothermic peak temperatures of DTA for quenched and thermally treated glasses. The nucleation temperature of scoria glass without the addition of sucrose was estimated as 75$0^{\circ}C$, but the addition of sucrose by 2w/o showed the nucleation temperature 6$25^{\circ}C$. The nucleation time was calculated with the same DTA curves. The nucleation times estimated were about 150min. for both of glasses without and with sucrose added. Finally, the activation energies for crystallization were calculated with the DTA data. The calculated activation energies were 143 Kcal/mole for the glass without addition of sucrose and 90Kcal/mole, 87Kcal/mole, 85Kcal/mole and 71Kcal/mole for the glasses of 1w/o, 2w/o, 3w/o and 4w/o addition respectively.

  • In this paper, the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of $0.4Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3+0.6Pb(Zr_{405}Ti_{595})O_3+X\;wt%\;Fe_2O_3$ ceramics were investigated with the addition of $Fe_2O_3$ and sintering temperature. Dielectric constant and piezoelectric constant increased with amount of $Fe_2O_3$ to 0.25 wt% and then decreased the further addition of $Fe_2O_3$. It seems that $Fe_2O_3$ acts as a sintering aid at the sintering temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$. By the addition of $Fe_2O_3$., sintering temperature of the system was lowered from $1250^{\circ}C\;to\;1100^{\circ}C$. The piezoelectric properties showed the maximum value of ${\varepsilon}r=4669,\;d_{33}=810(10^{-12}m/V)$, kp = 77 %, Qm = 55, in $0.4Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3\;-0.6Pb(Zr_{0.405}Ti_{0.595})O_3+0.25wt%\;Fe_2O_3$ ceramics having composition near the morphotropic phase boundary. The composition may be appropriate for actuator materials because of high piezoelectric constant and electromechanical coupling factor.

Effect of CNT Addition on the Hydriding and Dehydriding Rates of Mg-Ni-Fe2O3 Alloy

  • Samples with compositions of 80 wt% Mg-14 wt% Ni-6 wt% $Fe_2O_3$ (named $Mg-Ni-Fe_2O_3$), and 78 wt% Mg-14 wt% Ni-6 wt% $Fe_2O_3-2$ wt% CNT (named $Mg-Ni-Fe_2O_3-CNT$ ) were prepared by reactive mechanical grinding. Hydriding and dehydriding properties and effects of CNT addition on the hydriding and dehydriding rates of $Mg-Ni-Fe_2O_3$ were then investigated. Activation of the $Mg-14Ni-6Fe_2O_3$ sample was completed after three hydriding (under 12 bar $H_2$)-dehydriding (under 1.0 bar $H_2$) cycles at 573 K. The addition of CNT to the $Mg-14Ni-6Fe_2O_3$ sample made the activation process unnecessary, with a small decrease in the hydrogen-storage capacity.

The Synthesis of $Fe_3O_4$ Powder through Glycothermal Process (Glycothermal Process에 의한 $Fe_3O_4$ 분말 합성)

  • Magnetite(Fe3O4) powders were synthesized through glycothermal reaction by using crystalline $\alpha$-FeOOH as precursor and ethyleanne glycol as solvent. The phase, morphology and particle size of synthesized powders were characterized by XRD and an SEM. When only ethylene glycol was used as solvent, the phase was transformed from $\alpha$-FeOOH to $\alpha$-Fe2O3 and finally Fe3O4 at 27$0^{\circ}C$ for 6hr without morphological change. But by addition of water, Fe3O4 powders were synthesized at 23$0^{\circ}C$ for 3hr through solution-recrystalization process. As the content of water addition increased, the particle shape changed from sphere to octahedron and the partcle size increased. When the excess amount of water added, residual $\alpha$-FeOOH or $\alpha$-Fe2O3 was recrystalized.

  • The coloration of the $Nd_2O_3$ contained $R_2O-BaO-SrO-ZrO_2-SiO_2$ glass added the various amount of $CeO_2$ $MnO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $As_2O_3$ alone or together by the irradiation of X-ray irradiation,. The glasses added $CeO_2$ in proportion to amount were more effective on preventing coloration by X-ray irradiation but the addition of $MnO_2$ produced different color according to the amount of addition. The addition of the $Fe_2O_3$, $TiO_2$ and $As_2O_3$ did not give much effects to the transmission changes of $Nd_2O_3$ contained glass by X-ray irradiation but the glass added $CeO_2$ , $Fe_2O_3$, $TiO_2$ together was most effective to prevent coloration and transmisson changes.

  • In this study, $Fe_2O_3$ was added as a flux to decrease melting temperature and refine during melting of Cu powder from scraped surface of the waste PCB (printed circuit board). The effect of $Fe_2O_3$ ratio to Cu powder and temperature on the recovery of Cu and content of impurities were investigated. It was found that the recovery of Cu was increased with increasing addition ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and reaction temperature. The contents of O, Si and Fe in Cu phase were also decreased with increasing addition ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and temperature. The formation of fayalite ($2FeO{\cdot}SiO_2$) and iron oxides phases in the slag was confirmed by XRD analysis after reaction with $Fe_2O_3$. Therefore, it was considered that the decrease of melting temperature and viscosity of slag by formation of fayalite slag contributed remarkably to the Cu recovery.

  • Tetragonal (t)-ZrO2/Al2O3 composites doped with Y2O3, Nb2O5, and Fe2O3 ((Y, Nb, Fe)-TZP/Al2O3) were prepared over the range containing Fe2O3 from 0.1 to 0.5 mol% with 0.1 mol% intervals to evaluate the effect of Fe2O3 addition on chromaticity, hydrothermal stability, and mechanical property of the composites. After autoclaving for 20 h at 18$0^{\circ}C$ under 3.5 MPa water vapor pressure, no tlongrightarrowm phase transformation was observed probably due to the preferential solid solubility of Fe2O3 in Al2O3, the presence of the rigid Al2O3 particles, and the inherent phase stability of (Y, Nb)-TZP. The optimized strength and the fracture toughness of the composite were 700 MPa and 8.5 MPa.m1/2, respectively, when 0.1 mol% Fe2O3 was added. The composites have shown a gradual color change from a slightly white ivory to a pale yellowish brown with increasing the Fe2O3 concentration.

Preparation of M Type Hexa-Ferrite Using the Mill Scale (Mill Scale을 이용한 M형 Ferrite의 합성)

  • M type hexa-ferrites were prepared by means of a solid state reaction using mill scale, $Fe_{2}O_{3}$, and the mixture of mill scale and $Fe_{2}O_{3}$. The mixture of powders were calcined at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. and sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs, with varing the mole ratio of $Fe_{2}O_{3}$/$BaCO_{3}$, by 5.2~6.0. And the magnetic properties and morphologies of Baferrites with impurities such as $SiO_{2},\;Al_{2}O_{3},\;MgO,\;CaO\;and\;Na_{2}O$ in the mill scale were investigated. The magnetic properties were worsened by the addition of $Na_{2}O because of non-reacted iron oxide and intermediate compound of $BaFe_{2}O_{4}$ but they were improved apparently by the addition of $Si_{2}$ and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ in the composition of $BaO.5.6Fe_{2}O_{3}$. Moreover, $M_{s}$ decreased but $_{B}H_{C}$ increased through the addition of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ in Ba-ferrite. ${(BH)}_{max}$ of sintered BM($BaCO_{3}$, mill scale mixture) and BFM($BaCO_{3}$, $Fe_{2}O_{3}$, and null scale mixture) were 0.86 and 1.04 MGOe, respectively, and the magnetic properties were changed around $440^{\circ}C$.
