Effect of Cl2 on Electrodeposition Behavior in Electrowinning Process

  • Pyroprocessing at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) consists of pretreatment, electroreduction, electrorefining and electrowinning. SFR (Sodium Fast Reactor) fuel is prepared from the electrowinning process which is composed of LCC (Liquid Cadmium Process) and Cd distillation et al. LCC is an electrochemical process to obtain actinides from spent fuel. In order to recover actinides inert anodes such as carbon material are used, where chlorine gas ($Cl_2$) evolves on the surface of the carbon material. And, stainless steel (SUS) crucible should be installed in large-scale electrowinning system. Therefore, the effect of chlorine on the SUS material needs to be studied. LiCl-KCl-$UCl_3$-$NdCl_3$-$CeCl_3$-$LaCl_3$-$YCl_3$ salt was contained in 2 kinds of electrolytic crucible having an inner diameter of 5cm, made of an insulated alumina and an SUS, respectively. And, three kinds of electrodes such as cathode, anode, reference were used for the electrochemical experiments. Both solid tungsten (W) and LCC were used as cathodes. Cd of 45 g as the cathode material was contained in alumina crucibles for the deposition experiments, where the crucible has an inner diameter of 3 cm. Glassy carbon rod with the diameter of 0.3 cm was employed as an anode, where shroud was not used for the anode. A pyrex tube containing LiCl-KCl-1mol% AgCl and silver (Ag) wire having a diameter of 0.1cm was used as a reference electrode. Electrodeposition experiments were conducted at $500^{\circ}C$ at the current densities of $50{\sim}100mA/cm^2$. In conclusion, Fe ions were produced in the salt during the electrodeposition by the reaction of chlorine evolved from the anode and Fe of the SUS crucible and thereby LCC system using SUS crucible showed very low current efficiencies compared with the system using the insulated alumina crucible. Anode shroud needs to be installed around the glassy carbon not to influence surrounding SUS material.

The Effect of pH and Various Cations on the GTP Hydrolysis of Rice Heterotrimeric G-protein α Subunit Expressed in Escherichia Coli

  • Previously, we reported the biochemical properties of RGA1 that is expressed in Escherichia coli (Seo et al., 1997). The activities of RGA1 that hydrolyzes and binds guanine nucleotide were dependent on the $MgCl_2$ concentration. The steady state rate constant ($k_{cat}$) for GTP hydrolysis of RGA1 at 2 mM $MgCl_2$ was $0.0075{\pm}0.0001\;min^{-1}$. Here, we examined the effects of pH and cations on the GTPase activity. The optimum pH at 2 mM $MgCl_2$ was approximately 6.0; whereas, the pH at 2 mM $NH_4Cl$ was approximately 4.0. The result from the cation dependence on the GTPase (guanosine 5'-triphosphatase) activity of RGA1 under the same condition showed that the GTP hydrolysis rate ($k_{cat}=0.0353\;min^{-1}$) under the condition of 2mM $NH_4Cl$ at pH 4.0 was the highest. It corresponded to about 3.24-fold of the $k_{cat}$ value of $0.0109\;min^{-1}$ in the presence of 2 mM $MgCl_2$ at pH 6.0.

Characterization in Terms of the NUX Rule of G-inserted Mutant Hammerhead Ribozymes with High Level of Catalytic Power

  • Attempts using in vitro and in vivo selection procedures have been made to search for hammerhead ribozymes that have higher activities than the wild-type ribozyme and also to determine whether other sequences might be possible in the catalytic core of the hammerhead ribozyme. Active sequences selected in the past conformed broadly to the consensus core sequence except at A9, and no sequences were associated with higher activity than that of the hammerhead with the consensus core, an indication that the consensus sequence derived from viruses and virusoids is probably the optimal sequence [Vaish et al. (1997) Biochemistry 36, 6495-6501]. Recently, during construction of ribozyme expression vectors, we isolated a mutant hammerhead ribozyme, with an insertion of G between A9 and G10.1, that appeared to show significant activity [Kawasaki et al. (1996) Nucleic Acids Res. 24, 3010-3016; Kawasaki et al. (1998) Nature 393, 284-289]. We, therefore, characterized kinetic properties of the G-inserted mutant ribozymes in terms of the NUX rule. We demonstrate that the NUX rule is basically applicable to the G-inserted ribozymes and, more importantly, one type of G-inserted ribozyme was very active with $k_{cat}$, value of $6.4\;min^{-1}$ in 50 mM Tris-HCl (pH 8.0) and 10 mM $MgCl_2$ at $37^{\circ}C$.

Growth, Nutrient Status and Net Photosynthetic Rate of Pinus densiflora Seedlings in Various Levels of Aluminum Concentrations (알루미늄 농도(濃度)에 따른 소나무 묘목(苗木)의 생장(生長), 영양상태(營養狀態) 및 광합성속도(光合成速度)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • The effects of various levels of Al concentration on growth, nutrient status and net photosynthetic rate of 2-year-old Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. seedlings grown in a nutrient culture solution were investigated. Al concentrations were added as aluminum chloride($AlCl_3$) at 0(control), 10, 30 and 60ppm to the nutrient culture solution. The nutrient culture solution was maintained at pH 4.0 by adding HCl or NaOH solution. The seedlings were transplanted into the nutrient culture solution and grown in a greenhouse for 90 days from May 8 to August 6, 1996. The treatment above 10ppm of Al concentrations induced a significant reduction on the dry weight growth of the seedlings. The relative growth rate(RGR), net assimilation rate(NAR) and net photosynthetic rate of the seedlings were reduced with increasing of Al concentrations in the nutrient culture solutions. This result suggests that reductions in the RGR and NAR of the seedlings were mainly due to the inhibition of net photosynthesis. In addition, the increase of Al concentrations in a nutrient culture solution decreased the concentration of essential mineral elements such as Ca and Mg in the needle of the seedlings. However, the concentrations of Al of each plant organ increased in the treatment above 10ppm of Al concentrations in the nutrient culture solutions. This result suggests that the increased Al concentration in the belowground part resulted from the decreased concentration of essential mineral elements in the aboveground part of the seedlings.

  • Poly-DCPD and poly-DCPD/silicates hybrids were prepared by in-situ ROMP poly-merization using $WCl_6$ catalyst. Good dispersion of silicates in DCPD medium can be accomplished by sonication method. Compared with nanocomposites prepared using $Na^+MMT$, the nanocomposites with CL 15A showed well dispersed silicate's morphology. superior thermal and mechanical properties. Additionally, well dispersed silicates in DCPD matrix enhanced the gas barrier property of the nanocomposites.

  • The polymerization of a cyclopolymerizable disubstituted dipropargyl ether, his(3-trimethylsilyl-2-propynyl)ether (BTPE), was attempted by various transition metal catalysts. The yield for the polymerization of BTPE was generally low, which is possibly due to the steric hindrance of bulky substituents. In general, the catalytic activities of Mo-based catalysts were found to be greater than those of W-based catalysts. The highest yield was obtained when the MoCl$_{5}$,-EtAlCl$_2$(1:2) catalyst system was used. The copolymerization of BTPE and diethyl dipropargylmalonate yielded a random copolymer with conjugated polymer backbone. However the polymers were partially desilylated, depending on the reaction conditions. The thermal and morphological properties of the resulting polymers were also discussed.d.

국가간 기술혁신 파급경로에 관한 실증분석

  • 본 연구는 기술혁신파급경로를 결정하는 국가 간 무역역할에 대한 실증적인 분석을 목적으로 한다 이 연구목적을 위하여, 최근 자료인 1980년부터 2003년까지 15개 OECD국가를 대상으로 자국의 기술혁신을 결정하는 중요한 변수로 알려진 자국 R&D축적 및 무역대상국의 R&D축적자료를 구축하였으며, 이를 무역지수인 쌍방간에 수출 및 수입량을 경제규모로 나눈 가중지수를 이용하여 유입된 R&D축적량을 구축하였다. 또한 대상변수들의 기술혁신파급역할에 대하여 최근 논의되고 있는 비정상적 패널기법을 이용하여 분석하였다. 최근 제안되고 있는 비정상적 패널기법을 이용하여 국제 간에 기술혁신파급경로를 분석한 결과를 간단하게 요약하면, 다음과 같다. 첫째, 분석대상변수들은 비정상성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 그러나 장기적으로 분석대상변수들이 서로 균형상태를 나타내는 공적분관계에 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 국가 간에 기술혁신파급경로의 방향과 정도를 파악하기 위하여 패널 공적분계수를 추정하였으나, 설정함수형태에 따라서 여러 가지 상반된 실증결과가 나타났다. 따라서 기존 연구Coe et al., 1995, Keller, 1998, Kao, et al., 1999 그리고 Funk, 2001]의 분석결과 및 그 시사점들이 서로 다른 이유는 분석대상변수들의 선택차이뿐만 아니라, 기술혁신경로에 대한 설정함수형태에 따라서 서로 다른 분석결과가 나타날 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 본 연구에서 나타난 분석결과의 시사점을 보면, 국가 간에 기술혁신파급경로분석은 기술혁신파급을 결정하는 매개변수선정도 중요하지만, 결정된 설명변수들 사이에 어떤 기술혁신파급에 관한 연관관계가 존재하는지에 대한 실증분석 즉 파급경로분석도 매우 중요함을 보여준다. 이러한 파급경로분석에는 기존의 선형가정뿐만 아니라 비선형가정을 이용한 기술파급경로분석을 통한 시사점제안이 요구된다.관적인 시스템을 제공하는 것이다.가 생성된다. $M_{C}$에 CaC $l_2$를 첨가한 경우 $M_{C}$는 완전히 $M_{Cl}$ 로 전이를 하였다. $M_{Cl}$ 에 CaC $l_2$를 첨가하였을 경우에는 아무런 수화물의 변화는 발생하지 않았다. 따라서 CaS $O_4$.2$H_2O$를 CaC $O_3$및 CaC $l_2$와 반응시켰을 때의 AFm상의 안정성 순서는 $M_{S}$ < $M_{C}$< $M_{Cl}$ 로 된다.phy.   • The properties of sea water in deep-sea are still quite poorly understood, even though those of the surface water have been sufficiently investigated. In this study, the specific conductance of sea water was measured under the circumstances : pressure of 1 to 2,000 bars and temperature 10 to $35^{\circ}C$ as well as over the concentration of 6.228 to 19.372 per mil chloronity. The specific conductance gave the linearity with the given pressure. The initial slope, ${\triangle}k/{\triangle}P$ of the specific conductance n versus the pressure P over the pressure 1 to 1,000 bars showed a large positive value, but the second slope over the pressure 1,000 to 2,000 bars was relatively less positive value. And our equations were comparable with the empirical formular obtained by Horns et al. (1963).

Indoor Air Quality Pollution of PM2.5 and Associated Trace Elements Affected by Environmental Tobacco Smoke (환경담배연기로 인한 실내공기 중 PM2.5 및 미량성분 오염 특성)

  • Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) samples were collected separately in mainstream and side-stream smoke using a self-designed smoking machine, and a total 40 of PM2.5 was collected with low volume air sampler at indoor environments with and without ETS in Daejeon, Korea. About 20 trace elements including toxic metals like As, Cr, Mn, Se, V, and Zn were determined in PM2.5 and ETS samples by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). It is found that the emission factors of K, Cl, Na, and Al were much higher than those of toxic elements for both mainstream and side-stream smoke. The average concentration of PM2.5 was enriched by 1.5 times at smoking area ($58.7{\pm}18.1{\mu}g/m^3$) than at smoking free area ($38.6{\pm}12.7{\mu}g/m^3$). The concentration ratio of each element between smoking and smoking free area were ranged from 1.1 to 6.0 except Cu (1.0); especially, Ce (6.0), La (5.2), K (2.3), and Co (2.0) showed higher ratio, which suggests that the ETS is one of the possible increasing factors of PM2.5 and elemental concentration at indoor environment.

Modified Shrinking Core Model for Atomic Layer Deposition of TiO2 on Porous Alumina with Ultrahigh Aspect Ratio

  • When atomic layer deposition (ALD) is performed on a porous material by using an organometallic precursor, minimum exposure time of the precursor for complete coverage becomes much longer since the ALD is limited by Knudsen diffusion in the pores. In the previous report by Min et al. (Ref. 23), shrinking core model (SCM) was proposed to predict the minimum exposure time of diethylzinc for ZnO ALD on a porous cylindrical alumina monolith. According to the SCM, the minimum exposure time of the precursor is influenced by volumetric density of adsorption sites, effective diffusion coefficient, precursor concentration in gas phase and size of the porous monolith. Here we modify the SCM in order to consider undesirable adsorption of byproduct molecules. $TiO_2$ ALD was performed on the cylindrical alumina monolith by using titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$) and water. We observed that the byproduct (i.e., HCl) of $TiO_2$ ALD can chemically adsorb on adsorption sites, unlike the behavior of the byproduct (i.e., ethane) of ZnO ALD. Consequently, the minimum exposure time of $TiCl_4$ (~16 min) was significantly much shorter than that (~71 min) of DEZ. The predicted minimum exposure time by the modified SCM well agrees with the observed time. In addition, the modified SCM gives an effective diffusion coefficient of $TiCl_4$ of ${\sim}1.78{\times}10^{-2}\;cm^2/s$ in the porous alumina monolith.
