Cu-Zn and Cu-Zn-Ti catalysts for the steam reforming of methanol were prepared. This reaction was carried out at atmospheric pressure, $250^{\circ}C$, steam/methanol molar ratio 1.5, and contact time 0.1 g-cat.hr/mL-feed. In case of the catalyst with 3 mol% of $TiO_2$, the activity was superior to that of catalysts without $TiO_2$. The reaction products were mainly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It was found that catalytic activity was not related to specific surface area but affected by metallic copper area which was measured by $N_2O$ decomposition and increased with the addition of $TiO_2$ content. XPS and XRD showed that the oxidation state of zinc was not changed during reaction, but oxidation states of copper existed in Cu(0) or Cu(I).

This study investigated the effects of six metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs: CuO, NiO, TiO2, Fe2O3, Co3O4, ZnO) on seed germination and germination index (G.I) for five types of seeds: Brassica napus L., Malva verticillata L., Brassica olercea L., Brassica campestris L., Daucus carota L. NPs of CuO, ZnO, NiO show significant toxicity impacts on seed activities [CuO (6-27 mg/L), ZnO (16-86 mg/L), NiO (48-112 mg/L)], while no significant effects were observed at > 1000 mg/L of TiO2, Fe2O3, Co3O4. Tested five types of seed showed different sensitivities on seed germination and root activity, especially on NPs of CuO, ZnO, NiO. Malva verticillata L. seed was highly sensitive to toxic metal oxide NPs and showed following EC50s : CuO 5.5 mg/L, ZnO 16.4 mg/L, NiO 53.4 mg/L. Mostly following order of toxicity was observed, CuO > ZnO > NiO > Fe2O3 ≈ Co3O4 ≈ TiO2, where slightly different toxicity order was observed for carrot, showing CuO > NiO ≈ ZnO > Fe2O3 ≈ Co3O4 ≈ TiO2.
In the present study, $TiO_2$ imbedded composite powders have been successfully prepared from the (Cu. Zn)/$TiO_2$ composite salt solution. The composite (Cu, Zn)/$TiO_2$ powders were formed by drying the solution at 200~$600^{\circ}C$ in the hydrogen atmosphere. Photocatalytic characteristics was evaluated by detecting the decomposition ratio of aniline blue with UV-visible spectrophotometer(Shimazu Co., UV-1601). Phase analysis of (Cu, Zn)/$TiO_2$ composite powders was carried out by XRD and DSC, and powder size was measured with TEM. The mean particle size of composite powders was about 100mm. As the reduction temperature increases, a few zinc sulfide and oxide phases was formed and copper oxide phase was reduced. The decomposition ratio of aniline blue was about 80% under the UV irradiation by the TiO$_2$ phase in the composite (Cu, Zn)/$TiO_2$ powders and similar decomposition ratio of 80% was obtained at the UV lightless condition by virtue of Cu and Zn compounds.
The diffusion barrier properties of TiN by using Cu(Mg) alloy film have been investigated. Cu(Mg) alloy film was deposited on air-exposed TiN film. Upon annealing, interfacial MgO of 100 $\AA$ has been formed due to the reaction of Mg with oxygen existed on the surface of TiN. Combined MgO/TiN structure prevented the interdiffusion of Cu and Si up to $800^{\circ}C$. To improve the adhesion of Cu(Mg) alloy film to the TiN, TiN layer was treated by $O_2$ plasma, followed by vacuum annealing at $300^{\circ}C$. It was found that increased oxygen on the surface of TiN film by plasma treatment enhanced segregation of Mg toward the interface, resulting in the formation of dense MgO layer. Improved adhesion characteristics have been formed through this treatment. However, increased power of $O_2$ plasma led to the formation of TiO$_2$ and decreased the Mg content to be segregated to the interface, resulting in the decrease in adhesion property. In addition, the deposition of 50 ${\AA}$ Si on the TiN enhanced the adhesion of Cu(Mg) alloy to TiN without deteriorating the TiN diffusion barrier characteristics.
The effect of $Ti^{+4}$ addition on the sinterability, microstructure, and temperature dependence of electromechanical coupling factor of magnetostrictive Ni-Cu-Co ferrite was investigated. The density of Ni-Cu-Co ferrite slightly increased by 2.0 mole % addition of either $TiO_2$ or $Fe_2TiO_4$, but tended to decrease by more than 2.0 mole % addition of $TiO_2$ or $Fe_2TiO_4$. As the content of either $TiO_2$ or $Fe_2TiO_4$ increased, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy compensation temperature also increased. Microstructure studies showed the stable grains when Ni-Cu-Co ferrite was sintered above 1, 20$0^{\circ}C$.

Multiferroic properties of $BaTiO_3-CuFe_2O_4$ thin films grown on highly-textured Pt(111)/$TiO_2/SiO_2$/Si(100) substrates were studied. $CuFe_2O_4$ ceramic target was synthesized by mixing oxide powders of CuO, $Fe_2O_03$, $BaTiO_3$ ceramic target was also prepared separately. The film structure was of bi-layer type, where $BaTiO_3$ layer lies underneath of $CuFe_2O_4$ layer, where both layers were grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. We will report the ferroelectric and magnetic properties of $BaTiO_3-CuFe_2O_4$ bi-layer films in some detail.
The diffusion barrier property of 100-nm-thick titanium nitride (TiN) film between Cu and Si was investigated using sheet resistance measurements, etch-pit observation, x-ray diffractometry, Auger electron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The TiN barrier fails due to the formation of crystalline defects (dislocations) and precipitates (presumably Cu-silicides) in the Si substrate which result from the predominant in-diffusion of Cu through the TiN layer. In contrast with the case of Al, it is identified that the TiN barrier fails only the in-diffusion of Cu because there is no indication of Si pits in the Si substrate. In addition, it appears that the stuffing of TiN does not improve the diffusion barrier property in the Cu/TiN/Si structure. This indicates that in the case of Al, the chemical effect that impedes the diffusion of Al by the reaction of Al with $TiO_{2}$ which is present in the grain boundaries of TIN is very improtant. On the while, in the case of Cu, there is no chemical effect because Cu oxides, such as $Cu_{2}O$ or CuO, is thermodynamically unstable in comparison with $TiO_{2}$. For this reason, it is considered that the effect of stuffing of TiN on the diffusion barrier property is not significant in the Cu/ TiN/Si structure.

Nanomaterials have been widely used in many fields. This study investigates the effects of metal oxide nanoparticles (CuO, NiO, $TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, $Co_3O_4$, ZnO) on germination and germination index (G.I.) of seeds, Lactuca and Raphanus. Under aqueous exposure, CuO on Lactuca shows the most significant impacts on activities compared to others, showing $EC_{50s}$ for germination and G.I. as 0.46 mg/L and 0.37%, respectively. The effects of nanoparticle phytotoxicity on seed Lactuca was much higher than that of Raphanus. In general, the toxicities on seed germination and germination index were as following orders : CuO > ZnO > NiO ${\gg}$$TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, $Co_3O_4$. No measurable inhibition was observed at 1,000 mg/L (maximum exposure concentration) of $TiO_2$, $Fe_2O_3$, $Co_3O_4$.
Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramic coating layer by gas flame spraying was very porous, therefore it could not have wear and corrosion resistance at all. To get a dense and strong coating layer, a method to infiltrate an alloy into the pores of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramic coating was investigated. Cu-Ti alloys, which had good wettability and reactivity with $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramic, were examined for infiltration. Infiltration of the alloys was performed in vacuum at 1100.deg.C. The melt of Cu-50 at % Ti alloy was well penetrated through the porous $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ coating and tightly sealed the pores, unbounded area and microcracks in the coating. The alloy melt in the pores reacted with $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramic to produce a suboxide phase, Cu$_{2}$Ti$_{4}$O. This composite layer which was composed of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ and Cu$_{2}$Ti$_{4}$O phase had good microstructure and wear and corrosion resistance. Additionally, microstructures at interfaces between coating layers were greatly improved owing to the effect of vacuum heat treating.
