The soil developed from volcanic ash in Jeju Island, Korea, were classified as typical Andisols. The soils had acidic pH, high water contents, high organic matters and clay-silty textures. The crystalline minerals of the samples were mainly composed of ferromagnesian minerals such as olivine and pyroxene, and iron oxides such as magnetite and hematite derived from basaltic materials. A large amount of gibbsite was found at the subsurface horizon as a secondary product from the migration of excessive aluminum. In addition, our study has shown that considerable amounts of poorly ordered minerals like allophane and ferrihydrite were present in Jeju soils. The contents of $SiO_2$ were lower than those of other soil orders, but $A1_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ contents were higher. These results are some of the important chemical properties of Andisols. The contents of heavy metals were in the range of $84{\sim}198$ for Zn, $56{\sim}414$ for Ni, $38{\sim}150$ for Co, $132{\sim}1164\;mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Cr, which are higher than the worldwide values in most of the soils. Some soil samples contained relatively high levels of Cr exceeding 1000 mg/kg. Mean reduction capacity of the Jeju soils was $6.53\;mg\;L^{-1}$ reduced Cr(VI), 5.1 times higher than that of the non-volcanic ash soils from inland of Korea. The soil reduction capacity of the inland soils had a good correlation with total carbon content (R = 0.90). However, in spite of 20 times higher total carbon contents in the Jeju soils, there was a week negative correlation between the reduction capacity and the carbon content (R = -0.469), suggesting that the reduction capacity of Jeju soils is not mainly controlled by the carbon content and affected by other soil properties. Correlations of the reduction capacity with major elements showed that Al and Fe were closely connected with the reduction capacity in Jeju soil (R = 0.793; R = 0.626 respectively). Moreover, the amounts of Ni, Co and Cr had considerable correlations with the reduction capacity (R = 0.538; R = 0.647; R = 0.468 respectively). In particular, in relation to the behavior of redox-sensitive Cr, the oxidation of the trivalent chromium to mobile and toxic hexavalent chromium can be restricted by the high reduction capacity in Jeju soil. The factors controlling the reduction capacity in Jeju soils may have a close relation with the andic soil properties explained by the presence of considerable allophane and ferrihydrite in the soils.
We investigated the possibility of systemizing data for the colour gradation of classical ceramics by build-ing program and D-basing each data information in pottery field that has been fall behind in forming data be-cause of many variable and lacking of data system. In this study we manufactured $CoAl_2O_4$ stain that has stable spinel structure at high temperature and then mixed base glaze with stain for the additive per-centage of 0.5 , 1, 5, 10, 15 wt% In thie colouring of Lime base glaze with the wide ranged melting tem-perature the colour development of cobalt-blue sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ is better than that of $1150^{\circ}C$$1350^{\circ}C$ The experimental conditions and data are D-based simulated programming of computer. The result of -based data appeared to be more smoothed fusion-adherence in the Matt glaze range of Lime base glaze, The variation of colouring is not found when additive content of glaze is more than 5 wt% and the stable colour development of stain was shown at the content that RO, $R_2O$ percentage is high (the content that R2O3 per-centage is low)

Thermal shock behavior of porous ceramic nozzles with various pore sizes for continuous casting process of steel was investigated in terms of physical properties and microstucture. Porous nozzle samples with a composition of $Al_2O_3$-$SiO_2$-$ZrO_2$ were fabricatedby adding various sizes of graphite as the pore forming agent. As the graphite size increased from 45~75 to 150~180 ${\mu}m$, both the resulting pore size and the flexural strength also increased. A thermal shock test was carried out at temperatures (${\Delta}$T) of 600, 700, 800, and 900$^{\circ}C$. Microstructure analysis revealed a small number of cracks on the sample with the largest mean pore size of 22.32 ${\mu}m$. In addition, increasing the pore size led to a smaller decrease in both pressure drop and elastic modulus. In conclusion, controlling the pore size can enhance thermal shock behavior.
The Deogbong napseok clay deposit which is composed mainly of dickite and pyrophyllite has been formed by hydrothermal alteration of the Late Cretaceous volcanic rocks consisting of andesitic tuff and andesite. The mineralogy of the napseok ores and the hydrothermal alteration processes have been studied in order to know the nature of the interaction between minerals and fluids for the formation of the deposit. Chemical distribution shows that alkali elements and silica were mobile but alumina was relatively immobile during the hydrothermal processes. It is evident that enrichment of alumina and leaching of silica from the host rock led to the formation of the napseok ore, whereas the enrichment of silica in the outer zone of the deposit gave rise to the silica zone. A large amount of microcrystalline quartz closely associated with dickite and pyrophyllite suggests the increasing activity of silica. Thus Si which was released away from the argillic zone by the increasing activity of silica. Thus Si which was released away from the argillic zone by the increasing activity of silica solubility moved out precipitating in the margin of the deposit to form the silica zone. Variation in dickite crystallinity implies the local change in the stability of the system. Thermodynamic calculation shows that the invariant point of pyrophyllite-dickite (kaolinite)-diaspore-quartz assemblages at 500 bars in the system $Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}-H_{2}O$ is about 300 $^{\circ}C$. Based on the mineral assemblages and the experimental data reported, it is estimated that the main episode of hydrothermal alteration occurred at least above 270 to 300 $^{\circ}C$ and $X_{CO_2}$ <0.025. Mineral occurrence and chemical variation indicate that the activity of Al is high in the upper part of the deposit, whereas the activity of Si is high in the lower part and the margin of the deposit. The nonequilibrium phase relations observed in the Deogbong deposit might be due to local change in intensive thermodynamic variables and fluid transport properties that resulted in the formation of nonequilibrium phases b of several stages.
Like bamboo-sprouts after rains, numerous sub${\mu}m$-sized pyrocarbon whiskers growth on the Mullite ($3Al_2O_3{\cdot}2H_2O$) substrate could be observed through a looking glass during methane pyrolysis at the temperature of $1050^{\circ}C$ in this study. If the surface of substrate would be scrubbed strongly with iron metals, then finely sticked iron particles were more effective catalytic for nm-sized whisker growth. Numerous fine flakes of pyrolytic carbon were hanging by invisible nm-whiskers as like as small spiders hanging by a spiderweb. This is the identification of nm-sized whisker growth. Therefore if the pyrolysis would be stopped at the initial stage of the whisker growth, the primary lengthening growth was nm-sized whisker. So could we vary arbitrarily sizes of whisker from nm- to ${\mu}m$-sizes. But ${\mu}m$- and nm-whiskers grown with the different growth mechanism; the former was straight and the latter has twigs, The lengthening growth of whisker was depended on the flow pattern pyrolysis species on the active sites of substrate and on the growth duration. We could obtained straight whisker length of 10~20 ${\mu}m$/min during the primary growth and laboratory spiral whisker of 30~40 ${\mu}m$-diameter/hr during the secondary growth.

Urban groundwater has a unique hydrologic system because of the complex surface and subsurface infrastructures such as deep foundation of many high buildings, subway systems, and sewers and public water supply systems. It generally has been considered that increased surface impermeability reduces the amount of groundwater recharge. On the other hand, leaks from sewers and public water supply systems may generate the large amounts of recharges. All of these urban facilities also may change the groundwater quality by the recharge of a myriad of contaminants. This study was performed to determine the factors controlling the recharge of deep groundwater in an urban area, based on the hydrogeochemical characteristics. The term ‘contamination’ in this study means any kind of inflow of shallow groundwater regardless of clean or contaminated. For this study, urban groundwater samples were collected from a total of 310 preexisting wells with the depth over 100 m. Random sampling method was used to select the wells for this study. Major cations together with Si, Al, Fe, Pb, Hg and Mn were analyzed by ICP-AES, and Cl, N $O_3$, N $H_4$, F, Br, S $O_4$and P $O_4$ were analyzed by IC. There are two groups of groundwater, based on hydrochemical characteristics. The first group is distributed broadly from Ca-HC $O_3$ type to Ca-C1+N $O_3$ type; the other group is the Na+K-HC $O_3$ type. The latter group is considered to represent the baseline quality of deep groundwater in the study area. Using the major ions data for the Na+K-HC $O_3$ type water, we evaluated the extent of groundwater contamination, assuming that if subtract the baseline composition from acquired data for a specific water, the remaining concentrations may indicate the degree of contamination. The remainder of each solute for each sample was simply averaged. The results showed that both Ca and HC $O_3$ represent the typical solutes which are quite enriched in urban groundwater. In particular, the P$CO_2$ values calculated using PHREEQC (version 2.8) showed a correlation with the concentrations of maior inorganic components (Na, Mg, Ca, N $O_3$, S $O_4$, etc.). The p$CO_2$ values for the first group waters widely ranged between about 10$^{-3.0}$ atm to 10$^{-1.0}$ atm and differed from those of the background water samples belonging to the Na+K-HC $O_3$ type (<10$^{-3.5}$ atm). Considering that the p$CO_2$ of soil water (near 10$^{-1.5}$ atm), this indicates that inflow of shallow water is very significant in deep groundwaters in the study area. Furthermore, the P$CO_2$ values can be used as an effective parameter to estimate the relative recharge of shallow water and thus the contamination susceptibility. The results of our present study suggest that down to considerable depth, urban groundwater in crystalline aquifer may be considerably affected by the recharge of shallow water (and pollutants) from an adjacent area. We also suggest that for such evaluation, careful examination of systematically collected hydrochemical data is requisite as an effective tool, in addition to hydrologic and hydrogeologic interpretation.ion.ion.
Top spin valve films with PtMn antiferromagnetic layers were deposited using a multi-target dc magnetron sputtering in (100)Si substrates overcoated with 500 $\AA$ of Al$_2$O$_3$. Firstly, the post-deposition annealing was performed at 270$\^{C}$ in a unidirectional magnetic field of 3 kOe to induce the crystallographic transformation of the PtMn layer from a fcc (111) to a fct (111) structure. Secondly, the spin valve films were annealed without magnetic fields and magnetic properties were measured. In Si/A1$_2$O$_3$ (500$\AA$)/Ta(50$\AA$)NiFe(40$\AA$)/CoFe(17$\AA$)/Cu(28$\AA$)/CoFe (30$\AA$)PtMn(200$\AA$)Ta(50$\AA$) top spin valve samples, the MR ratio decreased slowly with increasing annealing temperature up to 325$\^{C}$. But above 325$\^{C}$, the MR ratio decreased rapidly to 1%, due to a collapse of the exchange coupling between a antiferromagnetic layer and a pinned layer with increasing annealing temperature. Also above 325$\^{C}$, the exchange biased field rapidly decreased and the interlayer coupling field rapidly increased with increasing annealing temperature. A change in the interlayer coupling field was resulted from the increase in interface roughness due to Mn-interdiffusion through the grain boundaries. We confirmed the temperature in changing magnetic properties agreed well with the blocking temperature of PtMn based spin valve structure.
Co-application of organic coating and cathodic protection has not provided enough durability to low-alloyed steels inseawater ballast tank (SBT) environments. An attempt has made to study the effect of alloy elements (Al, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Si, W) on general and localized corrosion resistance of steels as basic research to develop new low-allowed steels resistive to corrosion in SBT environments. For this study, we measured the corrosion rate by the weigh loss method after periodic immersion in synthetic seawater at $60^{\circ}C$, evaluated the localized corrosion resistance by an immersion test in concentrated chloride solution with the critical pH depending on the alloy element (Fe, Cr, Al, Ni), determined the permeability of chloride ion across the rust layer by measuring the membrane potential, and finally, we analyzed the rust layer by EPMA mapping and compared the result with the E-pH diagram calculated in the study. The immersion test of up to 55 days in the synthetic seawater showed that chromium, aluminium, and nickel are beneficial but the other elements are detrimental to corrosion resistance. Among the beneficial elements, chromium and aluminium effectively decreased the corrosion rate of the steels during the initial immersion, while nickel effectively decreased the corrosion rate in a longer than 30-day immersion. The low corrosion rate of Cr- or Al-alloyed steel in the initial period was due to the formation of $Cr_2FeO_4$ or $Al_2FeO_4$, respectively -the predicted oxide in the E-pH diagram- which is known as a more protective oxide than $Fe_3O_4$. The increased corrosion rate of Cr-alloyed steels with alonger than 30-day exposure was due to low localized corrosion resistance, which is explained bythe effect of the alloying element on a critical pH. In the meantime, the low corrosion rate of Ni-alloyed steel with a longer than 30-day exposure wasdue to an Ni enriched layer containing $Fe_2NiO_4$, the predicted oxide in the E-pH diagram. Finally, the measurement of the membrane potential depending on the alloying element showed that a lower permeability of chloride ion does not always result in higher corrosion resistance in seawater.
The purpose of this study is to optimize the design of a capacitive pressure sensor element using the simulation of electrical characteristics. The simulation of the ceramic sensor diaphragm ($Al_2O_3$) was performed by permitting pressure to change the curvature of the diaphragm. The pressure capacitance ($C_P$) was increased from 19.63 pF to 15.26 pF by applying pressure because the distance between the electrodes has been changed from $30{\mu}m$ to $15{\mu}m$. When the thickness of the diaphragm was changed to 0.46~0.52 mm, a larger capacitance change showed in accordance with the reduced thickness, which means an increase of sensitivity. However, considering the viewpoint of the signal linearity, it was selected for the optimum thickness of the diaphragm to 0.50 mm. The designed sensor element based on simulated results was tested to measure the output characteristics. Comparing of simulated and measured results, there was a margin of error of approximately 2%.

Generally, end effectors for automatic robots can use ceramics such as alumina(Al2O3) and silicon carbide(SiC). In this study, black alumina was developed and used in the semiconductor field through powder molding press forming. The black alumina can be mass produced.Alumina and black alumina were ground using a plane grinder to apply to the end effector of an automatic robot. The optimal cutting conditionswere found by analyzing the surface roughness(Ra) of black alumina through grinding. The alumina surface roughness is the feed rate was about 0.72 mm/sec, and the number of revolutions was best at 0.4879 ㎛ at 1700 rpm. In addition, the black alumina surface roughness shows a precision of less than 0.2 ㎛ in most cutting conditions. The feed rate was about 0.72 mm/sec, and the number of revolutions was best at 0.1361 ㎛ at 1900 rpm. The surface roughness of black alumina was better than that of alumina by about 0.35 to 0.47 ㎛.
