$Eu^{2+}$-doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ and $Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ co-doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ phosphors have been synthesized by conventional solid state method. Photocurrent properties of $Eu^{2+}$ doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ and $Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ co-doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ phosphors, in order to elucidate $Dy^{3+}$ co-doping effect, during and after ceasing ultraviolet-ray (UV) irradiation have been investigated. The photocurrent of $Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$ co-doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ phosphors during UV irradiation was 4-times lower than that of $Eu^{2+}$-doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ during UV irradiation, and 7-times higher than that of $Eu^{2+}$-doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ after ceasing UV irradiation. The photocurrent results indicated that holes of charge carriers captured in hole trapping center during the UV irradiation and liberated after-glow process, and made clear that $Dy^{3+}$ of co-dopant acted as a hole trap. The photocurrent of ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ showed a good proportional relationship to UV intensity in the range of $1{\sim}5mW/cm^2$, and $Eu^{2+}$-doped ${SrAl_2}{O_4}$ was confirmed to be a possible UV sensor.
[ $M/Al_2O_3$ ] (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) catalysts supported on commercial alumina ($Al_2O_3$) were prepared by an impregnation method, and were applied to the hydrogen production by auto-thermal reforming of ethanol. It was revealed that each catalyst retained its own metallic phase and product distribution strongly depended on the identity of active metal. Among the catalysts prepared, $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ showed the best catalytic performance in the auto-thermal reforming of ethanol. However, the reaction mechanisms over these two catalysts were different. Ni/Al_2O_3 catalyst showed 100% ethanol conversion at $500^{\circ}C$, but it exhibited a rapid decrease in hydrogen selectivity. Although $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed an excellent performance in hydrogen selectivity, on the other hand, no significant improvement in hydrogen yield was observed due to the low ethanol conversion over the catalyst.
In purpose of introducing the inverse magnetostrictive properties into the structural ceramics, $Al_2O_3$ based nanocomposites dispersed with nano-sized Ni-Co particles were studied. The composites were fabricated by the hydrogen reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3$ and NiO-CoO mixed powders. The mixtures were prepared by using Ni- and Co-nitrate $(Ni(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\;6H_2O\;and\;Co(NO_3)_2\;{\cdot}\6H_2O)$ as source materials for the Ni-Co particles. Microstructural observations revealed that nano-sized Ni-Co particles were dispersed homogeneously at $Al_2O_3$ grain boundaries. High strength above 1 GPa was obtained for the $Al_2O_3/10$ wt% Ni-Co nanocomposite fabricated by a controlled powder preparation process. The inverse magnetostrictive response to applied stress was obtained due to the presence of dispersed Ni-Co particles, which indicates a possibility to incorporate new functions into the structural ceramics without loosing the mechanical properties.
Cross-shape structures of spin tunneling junctions were fabricated using DC magnetron sputtering and metal masks. The film structures were $substrate/Ta/NiFe/FeMn/NiFe/CoFe/Al_2O_3/CoFe/NiFe$ and $substrate/Ta/NiFe/CoFe/ Al_2O_3/CoFe/NiFe/FeMn/NiFe$. Fabrication conditions of insulating layer ($Al_2O_3$) and thickness and sputtering power of each film layer were varied, and maximum magnetoresistance ratio of 24.3 % was obtained. Magnetic characteristic variations in the above mentioned two structures and two types of substrates (Corning glass 7059 and Si(111)) were compared. Annealing of the junctions was performed to find out magnetic characteristic variations expected from the device fabrication. Magneoresistance Ratio were observed to maintain as-deposited value up to 150 $^{\circ}C$ annealing and then to drop rapidly after 180 $^{\circ}C$ annealing.

This paper presents the synthesis results of CaO-Al2O3 system clinker using the CaCO3 and the Al2O3 according to the synthesis methods dependent on the temperature. The purpose of this study is the formation of the CaO-Al2O3 system clinker containing high ratio of CaO·2Al2O3 (CA2). The maximum sintering temperature for the synthesis of CaO-Al2O3 compounds was 1250℃, 1300℃ and 1400℃. The CaO-Al2O3 compounds was sintered at the maximum sintering temperature for three hours. After sintering, the compounds was analyzed using X-ray diffraction method. The 12CaO·7Al2O3 (C12A7) and CaO·Al2O3 (CA) increased as elevating the maximum sintering temperature whereas the CA2 decreased. Especially, at the 1250℃ of maximum sintering temperature, the un-reacted CaO and Al2O3 was identified.
Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. The activities of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated at 1 atm and $CH_4/O_2=2.0$ in the temperature range of $450{\sim}650^{\circ}C$. The reaction activity of $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts with different loading was investigated. And the beneficial effects of Ni addition to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and the promotional effects of Ce and La addition to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. These catalysts were characterized by XRD and SEM/EDX. Comparing catalyst loadings, 10 wt% Co and 10 wt% Ni were found to be optimal at the experimental conditions. The 10 wt% $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and 10 wt% $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts in partial oxidation of methane showed $CH_4$ conversions and CO selectivity close to the thermodynamic equilibrium levels, but showed lower $H_2$ selectivity than equilibrium level. The addition of Ni to $Co/Al_2O_3$ exhibited higher $H_2$ selectivity but beneficial effect was not observed in the $CH_4$ conversion. Addition of Ce to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and addition of La to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ a improved the $CH_4$ conversion level and $H_2$ selectivity.
Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(series A) were prepared by mixing Al2O3 powder obtained by single precipitation method with ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) powder obtained by co-predipitation method. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites (series B) were prepared by co-precipitation method using the three starting materials. In all cases, the composition was controlled as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). The composites of series A showed higher final relative densities than those of series B and tetagonal ZrO2 in all cases was retained to about 95% at room temperature. ZrO2 particles were coalesced more rapidly in grain boundary of Al2O3 than within Al2O3 grain. ZrO2 particles were located at 3-and 4-grain junction of Al2O3 and limited the grain growth of Al2O3. It was observed that MgO contributed to densification of Al2O3 but limited grain growth of Al2O3 by MgO was not remarkable. In all Al2O3/ZrO2 composites, exaggerated grain growth of Al2O3 was not observed and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were found to have homogeneous microstructures.
An optimum route to fabricate the ferrous alloy dispersed $Al_2O_3$ nanocomposites such as $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni and $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Co with sound microstructure and desired properties was investigated. The composites were fabricated by the sintering of powder mixtures of $Al_2O_3$ and nano-sized ferrous alloy, in which the alloy was prepared by solution-chemistry routes using metal nitrates powders and a subsequent hydorgen reduction process. Microstructural observation of reduced powder mixture revealed that the Fe-Ni or Fe-Co alloy particles of about 20 nm in size homogeneously surrounded $Al_2O_3$, forming nanocomposite powder. The sintered $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni composite showed the formation of Fe$Al_2O_4$ phase, while the reaction phases were not observed in $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Co composite. Hot-pressed $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni composite showed improved mechanical properties and magnetic response. The properties are discussed in terms of microstructural characteristics such as the distribution and size of alloy particles.

The effect of Ce promotion over 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts on the CO conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity was investigated in preferential CO oxidation (PrOx) to reduce the CO concentration less than 10 ppm in excess $H_2$ stream for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Ce-promoted 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method and the loading amount of Pt was fixed at 1wt%. The content of Ce promoter which has excellent oxygen storage and transfer capability due to the redox property was adjusted from 0 to 1.5wt%. Ce-promoted 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts exhibit high CO conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity at low temperatures below $150^{\circ}C$ due to the improvement of reducibility of surface PtOx species compared with the 1wt% $Pt/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalyst without Ce addition. When Ce content was more than 1wt%, the catalytic activity was decreased at over $160^{\circ}C$ in PrOx because of competitive $H_2$ oxidation. As a result, 0.5wt% Ce is optimal content not only to achieve high catalytic activity and good stability at low temperatures below $150^{\circ}C$ in the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ but also to minimize the $H_2$ oxidation at high temperatures.
The Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. And the promotion effects of metals such as Mg, Ce, La and Sr in partial oxidation of methane over these $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. Reaction activity of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated in the temperature range of 450~$650^{\circ}C$ at 1 atm and $CH_2/O_2$ = 2.0. The catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD and SEM/EDX. The results indicated that the catalytic performance of these catalysts was improved with the addition of 0.2 wt% metal promoter. The Mg promoted $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed the highest $CH_4$ conversion and hydrogen selectivity at higher temperature than $500^{\circ}C$. The Ce and Sr promoted Ni catalysts superior to Co-based catalysts in the low temperature range. The addition of metal promoter to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and $Ni/Al_2O_3$ catalysts increased the surface area.
