The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of air pollution on the street trees in Seoul. Ten Gingko biloba street trees were selected in both Jongno(polluted area as a control) and Yangjae(non-polluted area) to investigate chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis and antioxidant enzymes such as APX(Ascorbate peroxidase) and GR(Glutathione reductase). The sampling, measurements and analysis were conducted in August. Chlorophyll contents and photosynthesis of Gingko biloba grown in Yangjae were higher than those of Jongno in the August measurement. In contrast, APX and GR activities of Gingko biloba grown in Yangjae were lower than those of Jongno. The observed tree responses are considered to be atypical compensatory response to polluted locations.
This study is done to prove the premise that both alkalinity and hardness affect on the dissolved phosphorus concentration so that the growth of algae is also affected in water bodies like rivers and lakes. Statistical analysis of the water quality data of 13 reservoirs collected for the last decade shows the relations between alkalinity and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ and between hardness and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ are not linear but follow second order equation. This relation seems to be due to two antagonistic effects accompanying a simultaneous increase in alkalinity and hardness. The increase stimulates the growth of algae by supplying carbonates and $Ca^{2+}$ to algae and at same time it causes a decrease in soluble phosphorus which retards algae to grow. These opposing tendencies are confirmed by theoretical calculations with the MINTEQ model. There seems to be ranges of alkalinity and hardness that are in favor of algae growth; the ranges are less than 44 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in alkalinity and also less than 63 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in hardness. This finding will provide a solid base to develop an effective water quality management of water bodies.

This study was carried out to examine the growth condition of Chionanthus retusa, roadside tree in Cheongyechon (CGC) and to investigate the relationship soil characteristics and tree vitality and chlorophyll contents of it. Growth condition of tree (condition of flower, leaves and branch, % of flowering, height, diameter at breast height, width, vitality and chlorophyll contents) and physiochemical relation item (pH, organic matter, K, Mg, Na, Ca, P) were investigated. The result are as follows : 1. The growth condition of flower, leaves and branch in the left side of CGC is better than the right side since the quantity of sunshine of left side of CGC is much more than the right side. 2. The average pH was alkaline. P and organic contents were much lower than the standards. 3. Tree vitality and chlorophyll contents were bad where were high user density and high buildings, such as 1, 2 area near Jong-gak and jongro 3 ga. Among the physiochemical factors of soil which affect tree vitality, K and P were found to be the main factors. Therefore, in order to improve the growth environment of roadside tree in CGC, it is needed to do periodical soil fertilizing and improve physical characteristics of soil such as, permeability and porosity by soil conditioner.
The effect of gamma irradiation on physico-chemical properties of salted sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida) was investigated. Chlorophyll and carotenoid pigment of salted sea mustard were partially decreased by irradiation. However there was no significant difference in the retention rate of pigment between control and 2 kGy-irradiated samples after six months of storage at around $10^{\circ}C$, ranging values of 74 to 77% in chlorophyll and 54 to 56% in carotenoid. Total organic acids and volatile acids associated with the organoleptic quality of sea mustard increased in the samples of lower salt concentrations and of higher storage temperatures. The softening of sample tissue by irradiation was shown to be correlated with the extraction properties of alginic acid.
This in vitro study was employed to clarify the effects of several pollutants i.e. $SO_2$, fluoride, cadmium(Cd), aluminum(Al) and NaCl, on the organogenesis and growth responses of shoot-tip, stem and multiple-buds segments derived from hypocotyl or cotyledon culture of petunia seedlings. ${Na_2}{SO_3}$levels of more than 200$\mu{g}$/ml had significantly reduced organogenesis, growth, and chlorophyll content. The injuries caused by ${Na_2}{SO_3}$, concentration of more than 400$\mu{g}$/ml were alleviated by increasing hydrogenion concentration of medium, indicating some relationship between two factors. Organogenesis was not affected by the fluoride concentration up to 100ppm in the media, but the growth and chlorophyll content were greatly reduced by the fluoride. The effect of Cd depended on the explant sources used for the culture; 1.0ppm was effective for fresh weight increase in shoot tip culture, and 3.0ppm in stem segments culture. Organogenesis and growth were greatly reduced by more than 10.0 Cd treatment. Growth and formation of shoots were better with Na conc. of 0.3% compared to control, but those of roots were inhibited. Na concentration goes over 1.0%, organogenesis and subsequent growth were inhibited, and chlorophyll synthesis was drastically reduced. Chlorophyll content was increased on the medium supplemented with Al 50$\mu{g}$/ml compared to control. However the formation and growth of shoots were greatly inhibited with more than 400$\mu{g}$/ml and roots were not produced at all.
Rice type tartary buckwheat is used as a substitute for rice in many Asian countries due to its easy dehulling character. The objective of the present study was to determine the chlorophyll, total polyphenol (TP), total flavonoid (TF), antioxidant activity and to quantify the bioactive compounds rutin, quercetin and chlorogenic acid in the seedlings of rice-type tartary buckwheat (RTTB). Young seedlings exhibited higher antioxidant (DPPH radical inhibition) activity in dose dependent manner. TP and TF content were highest ($3017.46{\pm}201.84{\mu}g$ TAE/100 mg dw and $1916.0{\pm}102.95{\mu}g$ QE/100 mg dw respectively) in 3 days after germination (DAG) seedlings compare to 6 and 9 DAG. The contents of rutin and quercetin increased with growing stage of seedlings. However, the chlorogenic acid decreased with increasing growth. Overall, RTTB seedlings can be regarded as a strong source of phenolics and have high possibility for food and nutraceutical application due to their efficient antioxidant properties, higher chlorophyll and phytochemical content.
To find heavy metal-specific effects on the photosynthetic apparatus of higher plants, we investigated effects of $CuCl_2$, HgCl_2$ and $ZnCl_2$ on electron transport activity and chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics of chloroplasts isolated from barley seedlings. Effects on some related processes such as germination, growth and photosynthetic pigments of the test plants were also studied. Germination and growth rate were inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by these metals. Mercury was shown to be the most potent inhibitor of germination, growth and biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments of barley plants. In the inhibition of electron transport activity, quantum yield of PS II, and chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics of chloroplasts isolated from barley seedlings, mercury chloride showed more pronounced effects than other two metals. Contrary to the effects of other two metals, mercury chloride increased variable fluorescence significantly and abolished qE in the fluorescence induction kinetics from broken chloroplasts of barley seedlings. This increase in variable fluorescence is due to the inhibition of the electron transport chain after PS ll and the following dark reactions. The inhibition of qE could be attributed to the interruption of pH formation and do-epoxidation of violaxathin to zeaxanthin in thylakoids by mercury. This unique effect of mercury on chlorophyll fluorescence induction pattern could be used as a good indicator for testing the presence and/or the concentration of mercury in the samples contaminated with heavy metals.
To investigate the effects of sulfite on the chloroplast development, etiolated barley seedlings were treated with 100 mM sulfite solution every 3 hour by spraying during 96 hours greening Period. The effects were determined by chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids contents, photosynthetic electron transport activity, chlorophyll fluorescence yield and fluorescence quenching parameters. The contents of chlorophyll a and carotenoids were decreased than that of control by treatment of salfite over 48 hours greening. PS II Is more sensitive to sulfite than PS I Is. And by the addition of DPC to the chloroplasts of the barley seedling treated with sulfite, the photoreduction of DCPIP was not recovered. In greening with suite treated barley leaves, Fo, Fv and Nlh ratio were decreased with little difference from that of control. But qP, qNP and qR were lowed in comparison with those of controls whereas qE was markedly higher than that of control. Especially, It is Interesting that qR was decreased markedly compared to that of control. The results in the change of PS I activity, Nf and qP suggest that the strate of Inhibition by suite Is carbon dioxide reduction cycle.

Three kinds of kimchi using Chinese cabbage, leafy radish and mustard leaf were prepared by conventional method and stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ or 2$0^{\circ}C$ for 13 dyas. During storage at both temperatures, changes of the amounts of salt and ascorbic acid, pH and total acidity were determined, and the relationship of the decomposition of chlorophylls with the production of their derivaties was studied. At both storage temperatures, salt concentration of Chinese cabbage kimchi(3.7%), leafy radish kimchi(3.6%), mustard leaf kimchi(3.5%) was relatively constant during the entire storage period. However, pH and total acidity wre fluctuating with the remarkable changes during 3 days of storage. Ascorbic acid content was slowly decreased during the storage period and the decompositin rate of ascorbic and was greater at 2$0^{\circ}C$ than 5$^{\circ}C$. Among the kinds of kimchi tested, mustard leaf kimchi with the slow decomposition rate of ascorbic acid contained relatively high ascorbic acid content, while leafy radish kimchi contained the lowest content. At both storage temperatures, the production of pheophytin and pheophorbide from decomposition of chlorophyll was least in mustard leaf kimchi, but similar production rates in leafy radish and Chinese cabbage kimchi were observed.
Ocean biogeochemistry plays a crucial role in sustaining the marine ecosystem and global carbon cycle. To investigate the oceanic biogeochemical responses to iron parameters in the tropical Pacific, we conducted sensitivity experiments using the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean-Tracers of Ocean Phytoplankton with Allometric Zooplankton (NEMO-TOPAZ) model. Compared to observations, the NEMO-TOPAZ model overestimated the concentrations of chlorophyll and dissolved iron (DFe). The sensitivity tests showed that with increasing (+50%) iron scavenging rates, chlorophyll concentrations in the tropical Pacific were reduced by approximately 16%. The bias in DFe also decreased by approximately 7%; however, the sea surface temperature was not affected. As such, these results can facilitate the development of the model tuning strategy to improve ocean biogeochemical performance using the NEMO-TOPAZ model.
