Effects of Oxide Additions on Mechanical Properties and Microstructures of AlN Ceramics Prepared from Al-isopropoxide (Al-isopropoxide로부터 제조한 AlN 세라믹스의 기계적 성질과 미세구조에 미치는 산화물 첨가제의 영향)

  • In this study, effects of oxide additives on mechanical properties and microstructure of A1N and A1N polytype ceramics were investigated. Fine A1N powder was synthesized by nitriding alumiuim hydroxide prepared from Al-isopropoxide, at 1350$^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. By adding 3w/o Y2O3, 0.56w/o CaO, and 10w/o SiO2 to AlN powder, AlN and AlN polytype ceramics were prepared by hot-pressing under the pressure of 30 MPa at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. AlN ceramics with no additives formed considerable amount of AlON phase, while AlN ceramics doped with Y2O3 or CaO decreased AlON phase and formed Y-Al or Ca-Al oxide compound. AlN+10w/o SiO2(+3w/o Y2O3) composition produced AlON and AlN polytype compound having 21R as a major phase. Room temperature flexural strength of AlN ceramics with no additive was 246MPa, and room temperature flexural strength and critical temperature difference by thermal shock(ΔTc) of AlN ceramics dooped with Y2O3 or CaO were 532MPa/340$^{\circ}C$ and 423MPa/300$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Y2O3 and CaO used as sintering agent played roles of densification and oxygen removal of AlN ceramics, and affected grain growth/grain morphologies of AlN ceramics.

Characterization of a Stress-Responsive Ankyrin Repeat-Containing Zinc Finger Protein of Capsicum annuum (CaKR1)

  • We isolated many genes induced from pepper cDNA microarray data following their infection with the soybean pustule pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines 8ra. A full-length cDNA clone of the Capsicum annuum ankyrin-repeat domain $C_3H_1$ zinc finger protein (CaKR1) was identified in a chili pepper using the expressed sequence tag (EST) database. The deduced amino acid sequence of CaKR1 showed a significant sequence similarity (46%) to the ankyrin-repeat protein in very diverse family of proteins of Arabidopsis. The gene was induced in response to various biotic and abiotic stresses in the pepper leaves, as well as by an incompatible pathogen, such as salicylic acid (SA) and ethephon. CaKR1 expression was highest in the root and flower, and its expression was induced by treatment with agents such as NaCl and methyl viologen, as well as by cold stresses. These results showed that CaKR1 fusion with soluble, modified green fluorescent protein (smGFP) was localized to the cytosol in Arabidopsis protoplasts, suggesting that CaKR1 might be involved in responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses in pepper plants.

Effect of Chitosan-Ascorbate and Morea(roasted of oyster shell at $1300^{\circ}C$) on Growth of Contaminating Bacteria in Dombaeki(traditional shark dish) during Storage (돔배기의 저장 중 오염미생물의 생육에 미치는 키토산-아스코베이트 및 모려의 처리효과)

  • The effects of 0.01%(w/v) chitosan-ascorbate(CA) and 10 ppm morea on the number of total microbes, Escherichia coli levels, and growth of food poisoning bacteria in dombaeki during storage at $10^{\circ}C$ over 6 days were investigated. Total microbes in meat, cartilage, and skin of untreated samples increased by 4.24, 3.81, and 2.20 logs compared to the zero timepoint, respectively, but, in CA-treated samples, counts fell by 2.66, 2.37, and 1.24 logs. Total microbial levels in morea-treated meat, cartilage, and skin showed similar tendencies but the effects were slightly less than seen in CA-treated samples. E. coli numbers in CA-treated meat, cartilage, and skin stored for 6 days decreased by 1.69, 1.25, and 1.52 logs respectively, compared with control samples. Morea-treated samples showed similar falls, but the effects were again slightly less than seen after CA-treatment. Both Salmonella and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were detected in untreated meat stored for 3 or 6 days. Food poisoning bacteria were found in both untreated and morea-treated samples stored over 6 days. However, no such bacteria were detected in CA-treated samples. Also, CA-treated meat, cartilage, and skin showed low degrees of degeneration. Thus, CA treatment enhanced shelf-life and dombaeki quality by inhibiting microorganism growth and tissue breakdown during storage.

Effects of Storage Gas Concentrations on the Transpiration Rate of Fuji Apple during CA Storage (CA저장 기체조성에 따른 사과 Fuji의 증산속도)

  • A transpiration model was selected and tested experimentally to predict transpiration into of Fuji apple stored in a normal air and controlled atmospheres (l∼3% O$_2$+ l∼3% CO$_2$) at 0$\^{C}$ and 98% RH for 6weeks. CA storage decreased the respiration rate of Fuji apple by 50% when compared with normal air storage. The transpiration rates of apple showed 50∼70% higher in normal air storage than those in CA storage and were decreased by increasing CO$_2$concentration under same concentration of O$_2$. The transpiration rates estimated by the selected model were in good agreement with experimental data for Fuji apples under controlled atmosphere conditions and normal air. When the respiratory heat generation rate u of Fuji apple increased with storage conditions, the evaporating surface temperature and transpiration rate also increased. But since some portion of respiratory heat was used as latent heat in the evaporating surface, the change of u value had a little effect on the determination of the evaporation temperature and the transpiration rate.

Effect of the Combination Hot Water - Calcium Chloride on the In Vitro Growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and the Postharvest Quality of Infected Papaya

  • Anthracnose of papaya fruit caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is one of the most economically important postharvest diseases. Hot water immersion (HW) and calcium chloride (Ca) treatments have been used to control papaya postharvest diseases; however, the effect of the combination HW-Ca on the pathogen growth and the development of the disease in infected papaya fruit has been scarcely studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the HW-Ca treatment on the in vitro growth of C. gloesporioides conidia and the quality of infected papaya. In vitro, the HW-Ca treated conidia showed reduced mycelial growth and germination. In vivo, the HW-Ca treatment of infected papaya delayed for 5 days the onset of the anthracnose symptoms and improved the papaya postharvest quality. The combined treatment HW-Ca was better than any of the individual treatments to inhibit the in vitro development of C. gloeosporioides and to reduce the negative effects of papaya anthracnose.

  • Wekk oriented $Bi_{2} Sr_{2} CaCu_{2} O_{8}$ suppercondcting thick films were fabricared on copper tape by LiReac-PreCu (liquid reaction between a Cu-free precousor and Cu tape) method. Cu-free precursor power which is composed of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{5}$ was printed on a copper tape by screen printing and was heat-treated. The speciment were partially in a molten state at the heat treatment temperature (85$0^{\circ}C$~87$0^{\circ}C$). The heat heat treatments for the reaction were performed in air or low oxygen pressure in several stages. XRD analyses of the resulting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconducting tapes show that the $Bi_{2} Sr_{2} CaCu_{2} O_{8}$ phase is dominant and a small amount of $Bi_{2} Sr_{2} Cu_{2} O_{6}$ phase is detected. Both phases are aligned in the c-axis direction.

Drug Release from Thermo-Responsive Self-assembled Polymeric Micelles Composed of Cholic Acid and Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

  • Cholic acid, conjugated with amine-terminated poly(W-isopropylacrylamide) (abbreviated as CA/ATPNIPAAm), was synthesized by a N, N'-dicyclohexyl carbodiimide (DCC)-mediated coupling reaction. Self-assembled CA/ATPNIPAAm micelles were prepared by a diafiltration method in aqueous media. The CA/ATPNIPAAm micelles exhibited a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at $31.5^{\circ}C$. Micelle sizes measured by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS) were approximately 31.6 $\times$$\times$ 5.8 nm. The CA/ATPNIPAAm micelles were spherical and their thermal size transition was observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). A fluorescence probe technique was used for determining the micelle formation behavior of CA/ATPNIPAAm in aqueous solutions using Pyrene as a hydrophobic Probe. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was evaluated as $8.9{\times}0^{-2}$ g/L. A drug release study was performed using indomethacin (IN) as a hydrophobic model drug. The release kinetics of IN from the CA/ATPNIPAAm micelles revealed a thermo-sensitivity by the unique character of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) i.e. the release rate was higher at $25^{\circ}C$ than at $37^{\circ}C$.

  • (Ba$_{0.6-x}$Sr$_{0.4}$Ca$_{x}$)TiO$_3$(x=1.10,0.15,0.20) specimens were fabricated by the solid state reaction method and then the structural and dielectric properties as a function of he composition ratio and sintering temperature were studied. As a result of the differential thermal analysis(DTA), exothermic peak was observed at around 102$0^{\circ}C$ due to the formation of the polycrystalline perovskite phase. The BSCT(50/40/10) specimen sintered at 150$0^{\circ}C$ showed the highest average grain size(18.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). The Curie temperature and dielectric constant at room temperature decreased with increasing Ca content. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the BSCT(50/40/10) specimen, sintered at 145$0^{\circ}C$, were about 4324 and 0.972% at 1KHz, respectively.ively.

  • Optimum conditions of PEG treatment for the intergeneric fusion of yeast protoplasts were investigated. Fusants were selected by nutritional complementation on minimal medium. The intergeneric fusion frequency between pro-toplasts of S. cerevisiae and C. tropicalis was distributed 10$^{-4}$ to 10$^{-6}$, depending on the combination of parental strains. PEG 4000 or 6000 are equally effective. 30%(w/v) PEG 4000 was found to be optimum and below 20% its stabilizing effect was lost, resulting in protoplast lysis, and optimum pH was 8.0. The efficiency of PEG was enhanced by higher temperature of the PEG solution, and by the addition of Ca ions. The stimulating effect of Ca ions in the range of 1 mM to 100 mM proved similar.

  • We have prepared 20 kinds of Mn-Zn ferrites as content of CaO(0.1 mol%), NiO(0.0~0.60 mol%) and CoO(0.0~0.8 mol%) adding by the coprecipitation method and studied the magnetic properties as content of CaO, NiO and CoO adding. Initial permeability decrease as the content of NiO and CoO adding increases, while Curie tem~ perature increase as the content of NiO and CoO adding increases. $(H_{c})$, $(B_{s})$ and $(W_{h})$ increase as content of NiO adding increases.
