  • Reverse osmosis technology is being used on large scale for treatment of ground water, brackish water, wastewater and sea water. The most challenging issue in RO process is carbonate scaling which is directly linked with the efficiency and economy. Considering the natural phenomena of carbonate scaling different adaptations have been made to control scaling on the surface of RO membrane including acid dosage and antiscalant addition. As carbonate scaling is directly related with pH level of feed water, present study describes an experimental approach to reduce scaling on RO membrane by lowering the feed water pH by purging $CO_2$. In this comparative study four different conditions including control process (without any scale inhibitor), with dosage of antiscalant, with purging of $CO_2$ and with co addition of antiscalant and $CO_2$ in a feed stream line; it was established that $CO_2$ is a better appliance to reduce carbonate scaling on the membrane surface by reduce pH of feed stream. It was also observed that $CO_2$ and antiscalant mutually function better for scale control.

  • Tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) thin films were prepared on Si(100) substrate by PE-ALD using the $DBDTA((CH_{3}CO_2)_{2}Sn[(CH_2)_{3}CH_3]_2)$ Precursor. The properties were studied as a function of source temperature, substrate temperature, and purging time. Scanning probe microscopic images at the source temperature $50^{\circ}C$ and the substrate temperature $300^{\circ}C$ shows lower roughness than those $40/60^{\circ}C$ source and $200/400^{\circ}C$ substrate temperature samples. The purging time for optimum process was 8sec and the deposition rate was about 1 nm per 10 cycles. The conductance of $SnO_2$ thin film showed a constant region in the range of $200^{\circ}C\;to\;500^{\circ}C$. The thin films deposited for 200 cycle show a better sensitivity to CO gas.

  • A new technique for recycling process water was developed in order to reduce the calcium hardness of the closed OCC recycling system. Calcium ions present in the white water were precipitated as calcium carbonate by a reaction with sodium carbonate and the CaCO$_3$precipitates were easily removed from the system by a dissolved air flotation(DAF) method. After the DAF stage, CO$_2$-gas was purged into the water because the pH of Na$_2$CO$_3$-treated white water was reduced to neutral by CO$_2$gas. Since CaCO$_3$precipitate tends to stick onto the fine fiber surface and then is selectively removed from the water, a proper amount of suspended solid in the process water acts as an important factor in deciding the removal efficiency. By the application of Na$_2$CO$_3$addition - DAF - CO$_2$purging to the short circulated white water the calcium hardness was significantly reduced by 92% and more. The removal of calcium ions with fine fibers led to drainage improvement, reduction of fresh water consumption, and enhanced efficiency of wet-end chemicals.

  • To enhance the productivity of recombinant protein, ${\beta} -glucuronidase(GUS)$, by transgenic Nicotiana suspensions, perfusion culture was carried out in a 5-L stirred tank bioreactor. Maximum cell density of 20.0 gDCW/L was obtained and GUS activity was noticeably affected by medium composition, such as salt concentration. Effect of headspace purging by $CO_2-enriched$ air was also investigated. Aeration of $CO_2(5%)-enriched$ air with 0.2 vvm significantly promoted the cell growth in lag pahse and increased volumetric GUS activity from 0.69 U/mL to 5.76 U/mL. In contrast, aeration of $CO_2(5%)-enriched$ air with 0.1 vvm did not affect the cell growth but enhanced the GUS acitivity from 3.24 to 5.25 U/mL at the 4th day.

  • The gas separation technology using membrane is widely used to refine various gases in many industry fields and recently is being applying in $CO_2$ recovery technology. In the gas and chemical tanker. nitrogen generators for inerting, purging and padding are on board and most of them have membrane modules of hollow fiber type with long life and vibration resisting properties. Because a membrane module is a key component accounting for 50% of total manufacturing cost of nitrogen generator, adequate selection for it is an important problem. In this paper, the flow performance coefficient based on dimension and specification data of membrane module was relatively selected to compare nitrogen generating capacity of module and various performance tests about the selected PARKER ST6010 membrane module were conducted. As a result, the useful coefficient and basic data in selecting a membrane module were achieved.

  • Effects of the existence of $CO_2$ gas and pH on the silica surface characteristics at silica/Pb(II) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS, $C_{12}H_{25}SO_3Na$) solution interface were studied. The hydrophobic characteristics of silica surface was delineated by contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using atomic force microscopy (AFM). In $CO_2$ free condition provided by purging $N_2$ gas, the contact angle of fused silica surface in $10^{-4}M$ Pb(II) and SDS solution increased greatly up to $90^{\circ}$ compared with $40^{\circ}$ in atmospheric condition. It was due to the precipitation of $PbCO_3$ in atmospheric condition. In $CO_2$ free condition the change of contact angle and adhesion force ($F_{ad}$) in AFM, affected by pH change, was similar to the distribution of $PbOH^+$ ion in speciation diagram corresponding to $10^{-4}M$ total Pb(II). Therefore, it was convinced that the $PbOH^+$ ion among Pb(II) species would be the main adsorbing type on silica surface. Both of contact angle measurement and surface force measurement using AFM showed that the Pb only treatment made the silica surface hydrophobic. However, it could not be explained theoretically by current knowledge, and required further study in atomic level to solve the problem.

  • In the present study, carbon dioxide was converted to methane, using bio-hydrogen. Here, the bio-hydrogen was produced from organic waste. The anaerobic microorganism was cultured using only carbon dioxide and hydrogen for duration of 3 months. Therefore methane was not produced with acetogenotrophs. During methane production, carbon dioxide and hydrogen are taken in different ratios; among which 1 : 5 ratio has shown the highest methane yield. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen were introduced into the reactor at the rate of 8 mL/min and 40 mL/min, respectively. In this case, 92% of carbon dioxide was reduced and 2.2 m$^3$/m$^3$ day amount of methane was produced. Thus, the process has been successful in conversion of carbon dioxide into methane by purging it into methane fermentation reactor with bio-hydrogen using batch process.

  • The radioactive Carbon, C-14, although present in small amount, emits a high energy(up to 0.156MeV) $\beta$ ray and has extremely long half-life(5730years). So special monitoring and management on its generation and discharge is inevitable. A PHWR, due to its own specific designs generates about six times as much C-14 as a PWR does and over 90% of the discharged C-14 comes from the Moderator system and discharged in to the environment through the process of periodic purging of the moderator cover gas system. The present study focussed on the development of effective C-14 scrubber and after production of a test facility and experiments using it, we found that our test facility is very efficient in $CO_2$ removal.

  • Ground pork was packaged(purged) with modified atmosphere (n$_2$ and CO$_2$) and irradiated with the electron beam in order to find out whether modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) inhibit the microbial growth and lipid oxidation development caused by electron beam irradiation. After packaging and irradiation, ground pork was stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 6 days and -15$^{\circ}C$ for 3 months, and periodically the microbial counts and the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) for the determination of lipid oxidation were measured. The inhibition of growth of total aerobic bacteria and mesophiles was confirmed when the ground pork was irradiated with the electron beam dose of 1.5 and 3.0 kGy. The N$_2$ or CO$_2$ purging alone was also effective in reducing the development of lipid oxidation of ground pork during storage at 4 and -15$^{\circ}C$. The combination of electron beam irradiation(1.5 and 3.0 kGy) with MAP (N$_2$ or CO$_2$) was effective to inhibit the growth of total aerobic bacteria and mesophiles, and retard the lipid oxidation of ground pork during storage at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 6 days and -15$^{\circ}C$ for 3 months.

  • Background: Abnormal angiogenesis can induce hypoxia within a highly proliferating tumor mass, and these hypoxic conditions can in turn create clinical problems, such as resistance to chemotherapy. However, the mechanism by which hypoxia induces these changes has not yet been determined. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine how hypoxia induces changes in cell viability and extracellular microenvironments in an in vitro culture system using non-small cell lung cancer cells. Methods: The non-small cell lung cancer cell line, A549 was cultured in DMEM or RPMI-1640 media that contained fetal bovine serum. A decrease in the oxygen tension of the media that contained the culture was then induced in a hypoxia microchamber using a $CO_2-N_2$ gas mixture. A gas analysis and an MTT assay were then conducted. Results: (1) The decrease in oxygen tension was checked the anaerobic gas mixture for 30 min and then reoxygenation was induced by adding a 5% $CO_2-room$ air gas mixture to the chamber. (2) Purging with the anaerobic gas mixture was found to decrease the further oxygen tension of cell culture media. (3) The low oxygen tension resulted in a low pH, lactic acidosis and a decreased glucose concentration in the media. (4) The decrease in glucose concentration that was observed as a result of hypoxia was markedly different when different types of media were evaluated. (5) The decrease in oxygen tension inhibited proliferation of A549 cells. Conclusion: These data suggests that tumor hypoxia is associated with acidosis and hypoglycemia, which have been implicated in the development of resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
