  • In the realm of cement manufacturing, concerted efforts are underway to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases. A significant portion, approximately 60%, of these emissions during the cement clinker sintering process is attributed to the decarbonation of limestone, which serves as a fundamental ingredient in cement production. Prompted by these environmental concerns, there is an active pursuit of alternative technologies and admixtures for cement that can substitute for limestone. Concurrently, initiatives are being explored to harness technology within the cement industry for the capture of carbon dioxide from industrial emissions, facilitating its conversion into carbonate minerals via chemical processes. Parallel to these technological advances, economic growth has precipitated a surge in construction activities, culminating in a steady escalation of construction waste, notably waste concrete. This study is anchored in the innovative production of calcium silicate cement clinkers, utilizing finely powdered waste concrete, followed by a thorough analysis of their mineral phases. Through X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis, it was observed that increasing the substitution level of waste concrete powder and the molar ratio of SiO2 to (CaO+SiO2) leads to a decrease in Belite and γ-Belite, whereas minerals associated with carbonation, such as wollastonite and rankinite, exhibited an upsurge. Furthermore, the formation of gehlenite in cement clinkers, especially at higher substitution levels of waste concrete powder and the aforementioned molar ratio, is attributed to a synthetic reaction with Al2O3 present in the waste concrete powder. Analysis of free-CaO content revealed a decrement with increasing substitution rate of waste concrete powder and the molar ratio of SiO2/(CaO+SiO2). The outcomes of this study substantiate the viability of fabricating calcium silicate cement clinkers employing waste concrete powder.

  • Hydrophilic coating solutions were prepared by reacting a silane coupling agent, aminosilane with colloidal silica (15~20 nm in diameter). Hydrophilic coating films were also obtained by depositing the hydrophilic coating solutions on polycarbonate substrates by dip-coating and subsequently by thermal curing at $120^{\circ}C$. During this process, the effect of types of aminosilane was studied on the properties of coating films. As a result, coating films, prepared with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as aminosilane, showed contact angles of $25{\sim}44^{\circ}$ and a poor pencil hardness of B. On the other hand, coating films, prepared with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) as aminosilane, exhibited contact angles of $26{\sim}37^{\circ}$ and a good pencil hardness of 2H.

  • In this study, a heavy metal stabilization treatment using waste resource stabilizing agents was utilized on army firing range soil contaminated with Pb and Cu. Both calcined oyster shells (COS; 5% w/w) and waste cow bone (WCB; 3% w/w) were applied for a wet-curing duration of 28 days. Following the stabilization treatment, the process efficiency was evaluated by various extraction methods for Pb and Cu. Neutral and weak acid extraction methods, such as water soluble extraction and SPLP, did not show positive results for heavy metal stabilization with very low leachability. On the other hand, TCLP and 0.1 N HCl extraction showed that the stabilizing agents significantly reduced the amount of the heavy metals leached from the soil, which strongly supports that the treatment efficiency is positively evaluated in acidic leaching conditions. Specifically, in the 0.1 N HCl extraction, the reduction efficiencies of Pb and Cu leaching were 99.9% and 83.9%, respectively. From the sequential extraction results, a difference between Pb and Cu stabilization was observed, which supports that Pb stabilization is more effective due to the formation of insoluble Pb complexes. This study demonstrates that the application of waste resources for the stabilization of heavy metals is feasible.

  • Twenty pork loins were processed for manufacturing raw hams according to a short-ripening procedure including dry-and wet-curing for 1 week each, followed by ripening for 2 weeks. Raw ham cuts were vacuum-packaged and stored in darkness at 10 and $25^{\circ}C$ for 90 days, and their physicochemical and sensory quality characteristics were investigated. The sodium chloride content of raw hams stored at 10 and $25^{\circ}C$ was maintained at approximately 5.1% throughout storage at either temperature. No significant changes in water, crude protein, crude fat and ash contents were observed in all samples regardless of storage temperature and storage length. Thiobarbituric acid and volatile basic nitrogen values increased continuously during the storage period. The changes in physicochemical characteristics including pH, water activity texture lipid oxidation and protein degradation, and sensory attributes appeared to be more pronounced at $25^{\circ}C$ than at $10^{\circ}C$ over the storage period. At prolonged storage periods, a significant quality loss in the aspect of texture changes including hardness, brittleness, elasticity, cohesiveness, gumminess, and adhesiveness was observed (p<0.05). Based on sensory evaluation scores, It appeared that vacuum-packaged raw ham cuts stored at 10 and $25^{\circ}C$ were not acceptable after 75 and 45 days, respectively.

  • Calcium sulfoalumiante(CSA) was prepared for using natural calcite($CaCO_3$) and industrial by-products and wastes, such as $Al(OH)_3,\;CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$. The mixture of raw materials was fired at 20, 400, 600, $1200^{\circ}C$ for 1h and cooled rapidly in air. The cement replaced by 10 wt% $C_4A_3S$ expansive additives was investigated by the measurement of the hydration products and compressive strength, setting time, expansion at wet curing condition. $C_4A_3S$ was found in x-ray diffraction pattern over the temperature $1200^{\circ}C$. The setting time or the cement pastes added clinkers fired at different temperature was shorter than ordinary portland cement. The compressive strength was higher than the ordinary portland cement about 20~30%. The mainly hydration products were ettringite, and $Ca(OH)_2$. The expansion due to the formation of ettringite during hydration decreased the drying shrinkage of hardened cement rather than the ordinary portland cement.

  • Cement-based thermal insulation material was manufactured using OPC, lime, anhydrite, and CSA cement in this study. The morphology and physical properties of the material were analyzed using XRD. All samples had ettringite, Ca(OH)2, and CaCO3 crystals. The XRD peak intensity of the ettringite and Ca(OH)2 slightly increased with an increase in curing time from 3 to 7 days. The compressive strength values at 28 days of specimens 1-8 were in the range of 0.25-0.32 MPa, and the compressive strength values of specimens 3-8 were > 0.3 MPa. The coefficients of correlation between compressive strength and apparent gravity at 7 days and those between compressive strength and ettringite/Ca(OH)2 XRD peak intensity at 28 days were above 0.8. That is, the compressive strength exhibited an influence on apparent gravity at 7 days and on hydrate at 28 days. The thermal conductivity of all specimens was 0.041-0.045 W/mK, and the highest value of thermal conductivity was shown by specimen 5. The coefficient of correlation between apparent gravity and thermal conductivity was 0.84. It was concluded that control of raw materials and hydrates must be considered for manufacturing of insulation materials. The cement-based thermal insulation material in this study could be used in construction fields.

  • In this study, XRF, Loss on ignition, SEM, and PSA analysis were performed on four types of fly ash in Vietnam and compared with fly ash in Korea. As a result, PC boiler fly ash in Vietnam has a similar chemical composition to that of PC boiler fly ash in Korea, where the content of SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 accounts for about 70%. In addition, the result showed that blast furnace slags in Vietnam and Korea have similar quality criteria and performance. A binder material mixing test using four types of fly ash supplied from Vietnam was conducted, and the compressive strength ranged from 7.60 to 13.25 MPa after 28 days of curing. Vinh Tan fly ash showing the highest compressive strength was selected as the soil injection material for the chemical grouting method. For the formulation of the chemical grouting method, sodium silicate No.3 and silica-sol were used as liquid-A. As a result of measuring the gel time and the compressive strength of the homogel, they showed good performance satisfying the quality criteria applied in Korean construction fields. Therefore, Vinh Tan fly ash can be used as a soil injection material for the chemical grouting method.

  • A novel MgO-based binder was developed and applied to treat the anoxic sediment that was collected from Seonakdong river, Korea and was contaminated with heavy metals. The treated sediment was evaluated by measuring compressive strength, expansion, leaching of heavy metals and storage characteristics for $CO_2$. Initially, an optimal blending ratio of lime (L)/fly ash (FA)/blast furnace slag (BFS) that was to be mixed with MgO was screened to be $L_{0.3}-FA_{0.1}-BFS_{0.6}$. Long-term strengths of the sediments that were treated by various mixtures of MgO and $L_{0.3}-FA_{0.1}-BFS_{0.6}$ were then evaluated and the blending ratios between 4 : 6 and 6 : 4 were found optimal, which yielded a compressive strength of 4.09 MPa. On this basis, the optimal MgO-based binder was selected to be a 5 : 5 mixture of MgO and $L_{0.3}-FA_{0.1}-BFS_{0.6}$. The good performance of the MgO-based binder was believed to be due to the formation of Mg $(OH)_2$, which filled the micropores and also increased the density of the solidified matrices. The MgO-based binder exhibited an average stabilizing capacities for heavy metals of 92.9%, which was similar to or higher than that of Portland cement. It was found that 69.1 kg of carbon dioxide could be sequestrated after 365 days of curing when treating a ton of anoxic sediments.

  • In this study, a grid panel structure in which the woven CFRP composites were stacked in the orthogonal array was proposed and the mechanical properties were analyzed and studied. The grid parts were fabricated by cutting prepregs and laminating them. The grid panel structure was fabricated by co-curing with lower laminate plate in auto-clave process. The behavior of the proposed grid panel structure was evaluated by tests under tensile, compressive, shear, and bending loads. The effect of increasing the stiffness of the orthogonal grid structure was verified through these tests. In addition, the finite element model was constructed and compared with the test results, confirming the validity and reliability of the test and analysis.
