Feasibility of large-scale photobioreactors for biological CO$_2$ fixation was investigated using Chlorella sp. HA-1. Generally, as the volume of photobioreactor increased, the CO$_2$ fixation rate decreased because of a lower illumination efficiency in large-scale than in small-scale photobioreactors. Though controlling the arrangement and the number of light source, the maximum CO$_2$ fixation rates that could be achieved were 530 and 357 gCO$_2$/㎡day for 40 L and 188 L photobioreactor, respectively, which was higher than the CO$_2$ fixation rate of lab-scale photobioreactor.
In this study, the $Mg(OH)_2$ slurry was made form ferro-nickel slag and then used for $CO_2$ sequestration. The experiments were in the order as leaching step, precipitation, carbonation experiments. According to the leaching results, the optimal leaching conditions were $H_2SO_4$ concentration of 1 M and the temperature of 333 K. In the $Mg(OH)_2$ manufacturing step, NaOH was added to increase the pH upto 8, the first precipitation was confirmed as $Fe_2O_3$. After removal the first precipitation, the pH was upto 11, the $Mg(OH)_2$ was generated by XRD analysis. The $Mg(OH)_2$ slurry was used for $CO_2$ sequestration. The pseudo-second-order carbonation model was used to apply for $CO_2$ sequestration. The $CO_2$ sequestration rate was increased by the $CO_2$ partial pressure and temperature. However, $CO_2$ sequestration rate was decreased when temperature upto 323 K. After $CO_2$ sequestrated by $Mg(OH)_2$, the $CO_2$ can be sequestrated stable as $MgCO_3$. This study also presented optimal sequestration condition was the pH upto 8.38, the maximum $MgCO_3$ can be generated. This study can be used as the basic material for $CO_2$ sequestration by ferro-nickel slag at pilot scale in the future.
The characteristics of $CO_2$ fixation by Chlorella HA-1 cultured in bubble columns were studied to achieve high photosynthetic rates per basal area. The influence of experimental conditions such as the diameter of a bubble column and gas flow rate, on photosynthesis of Chlorella HA-1 was investigated. The maximum productivity and the overall $CO_2$ fixation rate obtained in a 0.15 L bubble column was 1.09 g dry biomassa-day and 1048 g CO$_2/\m^2$-day, respectively. Light limitation has been observed in the bubble columns having a diameter larger than 3.5 cm.. As the reactor volume increased, the decrease of the $CO_2$ fixation rate was remarkable. High gas flow rate was helpful to mitigate the light limitation problem.
Since the reaction of mineral fixation proceeds with a very slow rate, the pretreatment method to increases the rate of carbonation reaction should be required. To increase the reactivity of serpentine with $CO_{2}$, two pretreatment methods are performed in this study. The heat treatment is done at $630^{\circ}C$. A heat-treated serpentine shows that the strength of -OH has a lower peak in FT-IR spectrum. Chemical pretreatment is the method of leaching of magnesium from serpentine using sulfuric acid at $75^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. Because the protonation of the oxygen atoms polarizes and weakens the Mg-O-Si bond, the removal of magnesium atoms from the crystal lattice was facilitated. After performing the pre-treatment of serpentine, $CO_{2}$ fixation experiments are performed with treated serpentine in the batch reactor. Heat-treated serpentine is converted into 43% magnesite conversion, whereas untreated serpentine has 27% of magnesite conversion. Although the results of the heat-pretreatment are encouraging, this method is prohibited due to excessive energy consumption. Furthermore chemical pretreatment serpentine routes have been proposed in an effort to avoid the cost prohibitive heat pretreatment, in which the carbonation reaction was conducted at 45 atm and $25^{\circ}C$. Chemical-treated serpentine, in particularly is corresponded to a conversion of 42% of magnesite compared to 24% for the un-treated serpentine.
Carbon dioxide is estimated to be responsible for 60% of the global warming effect, and this percentage is tending upward. Studies on removal and fixation of $CO_2$ in the flue gas are recognized as one of the important roles of the future biotechnology. Photobiological systems have considerably higher photosynthetic efficiency than conventional biomass system. The experiment for the photosynthetic fixation of $CO_2$ and the biomass production was performed with various initial cell concentration in a tubular photobioreactor and a bubble column $CO_2$ contactor with a gas sparger of $CO_2$ -enriched air(0.03~20%). Synechocystis PCC 6803 could grow at 10~20% $CO_2$ content under pH control. The highest specific growth rate, 0.0258 $h^{-1}$ , was obtained at 5% $CO_2$-air mixture. The maximum cell production rate, 0.2784 g/L.day, was obtained when the initial cell concentration was 0.45 g/L at 5% $CO_2$ -air mixture. The maximum cell concentration was 2.03 g/L in the tubular photobioreactor when the light intensity was $45.5{\mu}$$E/m^2$ . s. This system showed 0.482 g $CO_2$ /L . day of the $CO_2$ fixation.

To replace current expensive photobioreactor, this study was conducted to develop low-cost photobioreactor made of polyethylene bag. In previous study, optimal culture conditions of Spirulina platensis NIES 39 have been established, and based on these, the study of biological carbon dioxide fixation has been conducted. The maximum growth was the biomass 2.677 g/L at conditions of 10% $CO_2$, 0.1 vvm. It was shown that $F_{CO_2}$ was 4.056 g $CO_2$/L and $R_{CO_2}$ was 0.312 g $CO_2$/L/day. But, compared with the data at conditions of 5% $CO_2$, 0.1 vvm, $FE_{CO_2}$ was shown 52.372% which is half of it. Regarding the effect of $CO_2$ following illumination, the growth revealed that the input conditions, for 10 min per 3 h, were excellent in the light. $CO_2$ in absent light. $CO_2$ concentration and flow rate were 5% $CO_2$, 0.1 vvm, respectively. Finally, the addition of $CO_2$ was ineffective in the absence of light.
As one of the $CO_2$ reduction strategies, a biological method was proposed to convert $CO_2$ to useful biomass with antioxidant carotenoids by photosynthetic microorganisms. One of the photoautotrophs, Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater green microalga and accumulates the secondary carotenoid astaxanthin during induction of green vegetative cells to red cyst cells. In this study, $CO_2$ fixation and astaxanthin production using H. pluvialis was conducted by photoautotrophic culture in the $CO_2$ supplemented photo-incubator. Maximum growth rate of H. pluvialis was obtained at a 5% $CO_2$ environment on basic N and P conditions of NIES-C medium. The photoautotrophic induction consisted of 5% $CO_2$ supply and high light illumination promoted astaxanthin synthesis in H. pluvialis, yielding an astaxanthin productivity of $9.6mg/L{\cdot}day$ and a $CO_2$ conversion rate of $27.8mg/L{\cdot}day$ to astaxanthin. From the results the sequential photoautotrophic culture and induction process using H. pluvialis is expecting an alternative $CO_2$ reduction technology with a function of valuable biosubstance production.
Cesium carbonate was used as an adsorbent to capture carbon dioxide from gaseous stream of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and moisture in a fixed-bed to obtain the breakthrough data of $CO_2$. The deactivation model in the non-catalytic heterogeneous reaction systems is used to analyze the sorption kinetics among carbon dioxide, carbonate, and moisture using the experimental breakthrough data. The experimental breakthrough data are fitted very well to the deactivation model than the adsorption isotherm models in the literature.
고정화 효소의 효소 활성을 측정한 결과 3000-3500 Unit(${\mu}mol/g{\cdot}min$)으로 측정되었다.
Optimal culture conditions of Spirulina platensis NIES 39 have been established using different types of light sources. Several types of photobioreactors were designed and the increase of biomass, the amount of $CO_2$, fixation and the production of chlorophyll content were studied. The result revealed that the input conditions of a 10 min period per 4 h at the condition of 5% $CO_2$ and 0.1 vvm, were excellent in the growth. The growth showing the maximum biomass accumulation is limited to 1.411 g/L when using the fluorescent bulb and the low powered surface mount device (SMD) type LEDs which were equipped-inside in the photobioreactor. However, the biomass exceeded up to 1.758 g/L level when a high powered red LED (color temperature : 12000 K) photobioreactor system was used. The $CO_2$ fixation speed and rate were increased. Although the total production of chlorophyll content undergoes a proportional increase in the biomass, the net content per dry cell weight (DCW) showed the higher production with a blue LED (color temperature : 7500 K) light than that of any other wavelengths. The carbon dioxide loss was marked as 0.15% of the inlet gas (5% $CO_2/Air$, v/v) at the maximum biomass culture condition.
