Characteristics of Phenol Degradation by Fenton Treatment (Fenton 처리에 의한 페놀의 분해 특성)

  • Phenol, often discharged from petroleum and fine chemical industries is potential carcinogen and was classified into priority pollutant by EPA in USA. It causes serious environmental and health problem if discharged to the environment such as soil or aquifer. The removal efficiency of phenol and COD using Fenton treatment(Hydrogen Peroxide and Ferrous Sulfate) was observed and biodegradability (BOD$_{5}$/COD$_{cr}$) of reaction products were also examined. When 50 mg/l of phenol was treated by Fenton's Reagent(50 mg/l of hydrogen peroxide and 900 mg/l of ferrous sulfate), the removal efficiency of phenol and COD was 100% and 80% respectively in 10 minutes, which suggested this method can be used as actual phenol removal process. The initial biodegradability of 500 mg/l phenol solution was 0.7 but decreased as hydrogen peroxide was increased.

Comparing geometric parameters of a hydrodynamic cavitation process treating pesticide effluent

  • Paper focuses on comparison between two different orifice plate configurations (plate number 1 and plate number 2) used as cavitating device in the hydrodynamic cavitation reactor for improving pollutant removal efficiencies. Effect of four different parameters such as hydraulic characteristics (in terms of range of flow rates, orifice velocities, cavitation number at different inlet pressures); cavitation number (in range of 5.76-0.35 for plate number 1 and 1.20-0.35 for plate number 2); inlet pressure (2-8 bars) and reaction time (0 to 60 min) in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and chlorpyrifos degradation has been studied and compared. Optimum inlet pressure of 5 bars exists for degradation of pollutants for both the plates. It is found that geometry of orifice plate plays important role in removal efficiencies of pollutant. Results obtained confirmed that orifice plate 1 with configuration of 1.5 mm 17 holes; cavitational number of 1.54 performed better with around 60% COD and 98% chlorpyrifos removal as compared to orifice plate 2 having configuration of 2 mm single hole; cavitational number of 0.53 with 40% COD and 96% chlorpyrifos in 2 h duration time.

The Effect of Wet Pad and Forced Ventilation House on the Reproductive Performance of Boar

  • There were two trials involved in the experiment. Trial 1: the trial was conducted on two Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TSC) pig farms. One was located in the north of Taiwan and the other was located in the south. Both farms had wet pad and forced ventilation (WPFV) and conventional open design (COD) boar and sow houses. There were 12 Duroc boars, age ranging from 12-24 months. Half of them (6 boars) were raised in a WPFV pig house, and the other half were kept in a COD house. Semen was collected at 5-day intervals from May $1^{st}$ to the end of October. Sixteen sows (2-8 parity) were served by artificial insemination each week from the beginning of May to the end of Oct. These sows were checked for heat from 18 days to 25 days after insemination. Trial 2: there were four MPFV boar houses involved in the test. Two houses were located in the north of Taiwan, and the other two houses were located in the south. The test was conducted from January 2000 to December 2001. The total number of serviced sows by MPFV-housed boars was 35,105 head and for COD-housed boars 103,065 head. The results showed that the total semen volume, density of sperm, total sperm per ejaculate, sperm motility and morphological abnormality were significantly better (p<0.01) for boar raised in WPFV house than for COD houses. Average sperm motility in June and July was lower than for the other months. Morphological abnormality was higher during May, June and July. Although the results did not reach a significant level, the average value showed that the total volume of boar semen was higher in the north than for the south. The total semen volume production of boar raised in WPFV was higher than for boars raised in COD house, reaching a significant level only in summer. Boars kept in WPFV house had higher total sperm number than boars kept in COD house, reaching a significant level in spring (p<0.05), summer (p<0.01), and fall (p<0.05) but not in winter (p>0.05). Boars raised in WPFV house had significantly higher sperm motility than boars in COD house during spring (p<0.001), summer (p<0.001), fall (p<0.01) and winter (p<0.05). The average farrowing rate and piglets born alive were higher for boars in WPFV house than for boars in COD house, but neither reached a significant level (p>0.05). The present experiment shows that WPFV house can improve the reproduction performance of boars.

Characteristics of the Sedimentary Environment in Yoja Bay in the Summer of 1998 (1998년 하계 여자만의 저질환경 특성)

  • As a part of basic investigation to Fishery Purge Project for the Special Administrative in Chollanamdo Province, the sedimentary environmental characteristics of Yoja Bay at 15 stations were studied. The analysis was carried out in July, 1998, through studies of Loss On Ignition (LOI) by depth, Total Sulfide (T-5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentrations and Grain-size distribution. The LOI value was found to be 6.20-12.20% (mean of 8.89%), with the neighboring Sunhakri and Haksanri areas showing slightly higher values. These values were similar to the LOI values observed in the Hansan-Koje Bay and Jinju Bay areas on the southern coast of Korea. T-S and COD concentrations were found to be, respectively, 0.060-0.104 mg/gㆍd (mean of 0.052 mg/gㆍd) and 5.53-29.71 mg/gㆍd(mean of 13.24 mg/gㆍd), not exceeding eutrophication limits. T-S concentration was especially high at stations close to the central areas of the bay and inland areas, which caused by organic matter input from the nearby agricultural areas. COD concentration was very high at stations nearby the bay entrance and Doonbyungdo, but the mean value was lower than that of Hansan-Koje Bay. This leads us to believe that the level of pollution in Yoja Bay is not significant. The prevailing sediment composition was mud, consisting of 61.38% silt and 34.87% clay. Effects of Domestic Wastewater Treatment used Biofilm-Electrode Reactor(BER) (生物膜 電極反應機를 이용한 廚房廢水 처리 효과)

  • This study was aimed to estimate removal efficiency(%) of BER(Biofilm-Electrode Reactor) and A.S(Activated Sludge) treatments. When were analyzed COD$_{Cr}$, NH$_3$-N and T-P by current density and reaction time, the results were as follows : 1) In BER treatment, the removal efficiency of COD$_{Cr}$ in domestic wastewater was 79-86% when current density was 2.39 mA/dm$2$(15mA)-3.98 mA/dm$^2$(25mA) and reaction time was 48 hr. 2) Removal efficiency of NH$_3$-N was 71-73% when current density was 2.39-3.98 mA/dm$^2$ and reaction time 48 hr. 3) When the reaction time was 48 hr removal efficiency(%) of BER treatment for COD$_{Cr}$, NH$_3$-N and T-P were more excellent than A.S. treatment. And then we prospect that was because activated microorganism colonies attached in biofilm on surface of electrode pannel. Therefore, In order to derive BER treatment efficiency(%) should establish optimum conditions of pH, temp., reaction time, current density and biochemical and electrochemical states.

Treatment of Food Processing Wastewater bearing Furfural by Candida utilis (Candida utilis를 이용한 furfural 함유 식품가공 폐수의 처리)

  • A yeast treatment process was applied to treat food processing organic wastewater containing inhibitory material to anaerobic bacteria. The wastewater contained high concentration of the furfural as a by-product from the food processing. Aerobic yeast (Candida utilis) was selected to remove organics in wastewater. The batch test showed that the wastewater had an inhibition to anaerobic bacteria. The optimum level of temperature for yeast treatment was ranged from 25 to 45$^{\circ}C$. The pH range from 4 to 8 was favorable to yeast growth. The continuous flow reactor was operated at various SRTs. The results were satisfactory with the reduction of COD up to 90% at SRT of more than 1 day. Through the kinetic study of the yeast, the remained COD concentration was mainly caused by the formation of soluble microbial product (SMP).

  • The series of experiments under the various conditions were carried out to evaluate the feasibility of dissolved air flotation (DAF) as an alternative of conventional gravity sedimentation (CGS) and to investigate the decrease of the loadings following to biological wastewater treatment processes in livestock wastewater system. On the basis of the experiment result between CGS and DAF processes, for the other water quality criteria as well as suspended solid the removal efficiency of DAF process was about 20~25 % better than CGS process on average. In addition, the particle removal efficiency of DAF process became higher in proportion as the increase of air to solid (A/S) ratio and the general wastewater treatment efficiency of DAF process was enough to meet the requirement of loading decrease to following biological process even at low A/S ratio range. Though DAF process is widely known as an solid separation unit, there was not the notable relationship between particle separation efficiency and several pollutant removal efficiencies like $COD_{Cr}$ and nutrients (T-N, T-P). Assume that the $COD_{Cr}$ was removed as the fraction of particle separation in this experiment, the removal efficiency of T-N and T-P were sensitive to removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$, especially.

Applicability of the lenten's Reagent Oxidation to Biological Fixed-Film Process for Reuse of Effluents from the Petrochemical Wastewster Effluent Treatment Plant (석유화학폐수 처리장 방류수의 재이용을 위한 고정생물막 공정에서 Fenton 산화전처리의 적응가능성)

  • Reuse of industrial effluents through the cooling systems in a petrochemical complex was described. The partial oxidation of the effluents from the biological treatment plant was examined, using Fenton''s reagent as a pretreatment step prior to a next treatment of the effluents. Next tertiary treatment using fixed-film reactor resulted in marked reductions in COD and suspended solids. The continuous fixed-film process with Fenton oxidation pretreatment showed a 23% increase in the COD removal efficiency when compared to that without pretreatment of Fenton oxidation under the volumetric organic loading rate of 0.1 kg COD/m3/day. The Fenton oxidation treatment seemed to be a possible method for tertiary biological treatment to reduce the residual toxicity with the enhanced biodegradation of the effluents.

Anaerobic Digestion Efficiency of Remainder from Bacterial Cellulose Production Process using Food Wastes (음식 폐기물을 이용한 박테리아 셀룰로오스 생산 공정 잔류물의 혐기성 소화효율)

  • This study was performed to examine the availability of anaerobic digestion of the remainders caused by bacterial cellulose production process using food wastes. They maybe to be considered as others second pollution sources. Thus, this study was targeted to minimize content of organic material and to obtain more energy in those remnants using two-phase UASB reactor. The working volume of first hydrolysis fermentor was 35 L (total 55 L) and the second methane fermentor was 40 L (total 50 L). The organic loading rate of hydrolysis fermentor was 3 g-VS/L${\cdot}$day and 25,000 ppm of $COD_{cr}$ for methane fermentor. The hydraulic retention time was 18 days for hydrolysis reactor and 33 days for methane reactor. The hydrolysis reactor and methane reactor were performed at 35, 40$^{\circ}C$ respectively. For the efficient stable performance, the composition of organic wastes at each stage was as follow; Food waste with bacterial culture remnants (1 : 1), bacterial cellulose remnants, bacterial cellulose culture remnants with food wastes saccharified solids (1 : 1). When the anaerobic digestion was performed stably at each stage, the COD removal efficiency was 88, 90, 91 % respectively. At this time, methane production rate was 0.26, 0.34, $0.32m^3\;CH_4/kg-COD_{remove}$. As well as the values of anaerobic digestion at third stage were more higher than values of anaerobic digestion using food wastes. It is clearly to say that the food wastes zero-emission system constructed in our lab is more efficient way to treat and reclaim food wastes.

Fecundity of Pacific Cod Gadus macrocephalus in Jinhae Bay During Spawning Period (진해만에 산란회유한 대구 Gadus macrocephalus의 포란수)

  • To investigate the relationship between total length and fecundity of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus in Jinhae Bay, 45 individuals were sampled during the spawning period from Dec 2008 to Feb 2009. Fecundity ranged from 560,000 to 5,200,000 eggs for fish ranging from 64.0 cm to 74.0 cm in total length. The relationship between total length (TL) and fecundity (F) was F=103,273TL-5,124,302 and fecundity in Pacific cod from this study was correlated with total length. Average fecundity decreased from 2,620,000 eggs in early-spawning period to 1,650,000 eggs in late-spawning period. The wide range of relative fecundity at the same body size indicates that the timing of the spawning migration of Pacific cod in Jinhae Bay could be related to fecundity.
