Based on the inventions of continuous ceramic fibers, such as C, SiC, $Al_2O_3$ etc., by polymer precursor driven methods, there have been many efforts to fabricate ceramic continuous fiber reinforced composite materials with metals and ceramics matrices. The main purpose of the R & D efforts has been to produce materials for severe environments, including advanced energy systems, advanced transportation systems. The efforts have been started from the R & D of metal matrix composite materials and now the strong emphasis on ceramic matrix composites R & D can be recognized. This paper provides a brief review about the national efforts to establish advanced composite materials for future industries starting from mid 70s. C/Al and SiC/Al are the typical examples to be applied transportation systems and energy systems. The excellences in specific strength and overall mechanical properties, the excellences in environmental resistance make those materials as potential materials for advanced ocean construction and marine transportation systems. About the recent progress in ceramic fiber reinforced ceramic composites, advanced SiC/SiC composites including NITE-SiC/SiC will be introduced and the present status will be introduced.

Multi-layered laminate made of ceramic/composite have been developed to prevent penetration by high velocity impact. In this study, three-layered plates consisted of 1) cover layer (glass fiber reinforced polymer), 2) $Al_{2}O_{3}$, ceramic plate, and 3) backing plate (glass fiber reinforced polymer) were fabricated with various conditions and tested for their ballistic protection characteristic. The ceramic composite laminates, with thin backing plate, were completely penetrated by armor piercing projectile. The plate with inserted rubber between ceramic and backing plate showed excellent ballistic protection, though completely penetrated by the second shoot.

Using $6wt%Y_2O_3-2wt%Al_2O_3$ as sintering additives and Si as a raw powder, the continuously porous in-situ $Si_2N_2O-Si_3N_4$ bodies were fabricated by multi-pass extrusion process and their microstructures were investigated depending on the addition of carbon (0-9wt%) in the mixture powder. The introduction of $Si_2N_2O$ fibers observed in the unidirectional continuous pores as well as in the pore-frame regions of the nitrided bodies can be an effective method in increasing the filtration efficiency. In the case of no carbon addition, the network type $Si_2N_2O$ fibers with high aspect ratio appeared in the continuous pores with diameters of 150-200 nm. However, in the case of 9wt% C addition, the fibers were found without any network type and had diameters of 200-250 nm.
Basalt fiber reinforced epoxy composites with inorganic filler (BFRP-F) such as Mg(OH)2 (magnesium hydroxide), Al(OH)3 (aluminum hydroxide), Al2O3 (aluminum oxide) and AlOOH (boehmite) were prepared by hand lay-up and hot pressing. The combustive properties of BFRP-F were improved comparing with basalt fiber reinforced epoxy composite (BFRP) without inorganic filler. At a 30 wt% resin content, the limited oxygen index (LOI) of BFRP is 28.9, which is higher than that of epoxy (21.4), and the LOI of BFRP-F is higher than that of BFRP. The BFRP-F showed the lower peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR) and total smoke release rate (TSR) than those of BFRP. We confirmed that the flame retardant properties of the composite were improved by the addition of inorganic filler through the dehydration reaction and oxide film formation.

This study developed SiC/Al composites for electronic packaging to which reinforcements were added with the volume fractions of 49%, 56% and 63% by the squeeze casting method. 0.8 wt.% of the inorganic binder as well as the $Al_2O_3$ fiber and SiC particles with the volume fraction of 1:10 were added to the SiC/Al composites For the produced SiC/Al composites, the CTEs (coefficients of thermal expansion) were measured from 30 to $300^{\circ}C$ and compared with the FEM numerical simulation to analyze the temperature dependent properties. The experiment showed the CTEs of SiC/Al composites that were intermediate values of those of Rule of Mixture and Turner's Model. The CTEs were close to Turner's Model in the room temperature and approached the Rule of Mixture as the temperature increases. These properties analyzed from the difference of the average stress acting between the matrix and the reinforcements proposed in this study
This study aimed to prepare a W/O nonionic microemulsion system(MEs) consisting of OP-4[polyoxyethylene(4) nonylphenol], OP-7[polyoxyethylene(7) nonylphenol], 1-hexanol, D2EHPA, kerosene and HCl solution and applied to the extraction of La(III) from chloride aqueous solution within the polysulfone hollow fiber contactor (HFC),laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the recovery of La(III) using as-prepared microemulsion from the simulation wastewater containing La(III),Al(III) and Fe(III). The right weight ratio(Rs) of OP-4 to OP-7 was firstly confirmed through determination of the solubilization capacity of HCl solution(W0,HCl) in microemulsion, the effect of several factors such as the HCl concentration, temperature and effective extraction time on the extraction efficiency of La(III) was discussed. Results showed that the acceptable Rs was 4:6 to prepare the W/O MEs. The extraction yield of La(III) increased with the increasing of HCl concentration, temperature and effective extraction time and reaches to 97.3% while using five-stage modules. The recovery yield of La(III) from simulation La-bearing wastewater was 90.6%.

Natural Bokbunja is used as a material of oriental medicine which it obtains from Rubus or Raspberry. Natural Bokbunja Rubus has natural odor and taste, natural color, and pharmaceutical & chemical characteristics. This experiment tested antimicrobial experiment against microbe and dye experiment against fiber using natural Bokbunja extract. Some conclusions from this characteristics experiment were obtained as follow. The result of antimicrobial experiment could know that ATCC-001(staphylococcus aureus) does not show nearly from 72hrs after cultivation test and ATCC-002(aspergillus niger) shows to propagate continuously according to passage of time. Also, the result of dye experiment could know that cotton and silk using alum mordant($Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}13-14H_2O$) against fiber shows in direction of light beige color. The result of instrument analysis ascertained inorganic components of K(221.100ppm), Mg(17.920ppm), Ca(5.129ppm), Na(2.940ppm), Si(0.638ppm) etc from Bokbunja with ICP/OES, and ascertained organic components of boric acic(1.711), silane(2.142), pyrazole(3.481), propyl isothiocyanate(2.565), furfurole(11.521) etc from Bokbunja with GC/MSD.
We have demonstrated a terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy and imaging system using compact fiber-coupled THz modules. Using this THz spectroscopy system we have measured the absorption spectrum of water vapor in free space over 3 THz, as well as the refractive indices of various substrates such as Si, $Al_2O_3$, and GaAs using the transfer-function method. Through the THz imaging system we have observed a high-quality THz image of a medical knife and metal clip sample, with a resolution of $192{\times}89$ pixels using a step size of 250 ${\mu}m$.

Ion exchange fiber, PADD was synthesized by the reaction between PAN based acrylic fiber and DETA with $AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$, and was analyzed by FT-IR and SEM to investigate its characteristics. The experimental results of Cr(VI) removal by PADD were better fitted with Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the maximum uptake value ($Q_{max}$) was calculated to be 6.93 mmol/g. The kinetic data can be well described by Lagergen pseudo-second order rate model. The Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of PADD was 4.11 mmol/g at pH 2, which shows the effect of pH changes on the removal of Cr(VI). The adsorption selectivity of Cr(VI) was higher than phosphate and As(V). Total ion exchange capacity of PADD was 4.70 mmol/g, which was measured by acid-base back titration.
The refractive index and dispersion in the (100-x)(0.6CaO.0.4Al2O3).xSiO2(x=0~30) glasses were investigated. As the amount of SiO2 increased, the refractive index decreased. The change of refractive index was attributed to the change of the molar refraction rather than the molar volume. When the amount of SiO2 was smaller than 20 mol%, the average electronic transition energy gaps(E0) and the electronic oscillator strengths(Ed) were about 10.9($\pm$0.1) nd 18($\pm$0.5)eV, respectively. However E0 and Ed of the glass (CAS30) with 30 mol% SiO2 increased to 12.63 and 19.89eV, respectively. The similar results was observed in the variation of Abbe Number. Abbe number of the glass in the range of 0~20 mol% SiO2 was about 46 and that of CAS30 increased to 60. The zero-material dispersion wavelength({{{{ lambda }}0) of pure calcium aluminate glass was 1.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As the amount of SiO2 increased, the zero-material dispersion wavelength shifted to a shorter wavelength. {{{{ lambda }}0 of CAS30 was 1.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, that is currently using for the optical telecommunication system.
