  • To improve photocatalytic efficiency, graphene/Ag/TiO2 nanotube catalyst was synthesized, and its surface characteristics and photocatalytic activity investigated. For deposition of Ag nanoparticles on the TiO2 nanotubes, a polymer compound containing CH3COOAg/poly(L-lactide) was utilized, and the silver particles were precipitated by reducing the silver ions during the annealing process. Graphene deposition on the Ag/TiO2 nanotubes was achieved using an electrophoretic deposition process. Based on the dye degradation results, it was determined that the photocatalytic efficiency was significantly affected by deposition of silver particles and graphene on the TiO2 catalyst. Highly efficient destruction of the dye was obtained with the new graphene/Ag/TiO2 nanotube photocatalyst. This may be attributed to a synergistic effect of the graphene and Ag nanoparticles on the TiO2 nanotubes.

  • For the development of long-wavelength responding photocatalyst, Ag was applied to commercial $TiO_2$ to produce $Ag/TiO_2$ photocatalyst. Moreover, micro-emulsion method was used in order to increase the efficiency of the photocatalyst by enhancing the dispersion of Ag. Physical properties of the manufactured catalyst were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). For the catalytic performance measurement, RO 16 (Reactive Orange 16) removal was performed with 25 ppm RO 16 under UV-A (365 nm) irradiation. In addition, ball milling and dip-coating method were used to synthesize the photocatalyst for the comparison of the outcomes of using different synthesis methods. In addition, catalytic performance was improved by varying the Ag content and surfactant content. The highest catalytic performance was shown at $Ag/TiO_2$ synthesized by micro-emulsion method with 2 wt% of Ag content, and 0.5 g of the surfactant.

  • The effects of ion-doping on $TiO_2$ nanotubes were investigated to obtain the optimal catalyst for the effective decomposition of Rhodamine B (RB) through UV photocatalytic oxidation process. Changing the calcination temperature, which changed the weight fractions of the anatase phase, the average crystallite sizes, the BET surface area, and the energy band gap of the catalyst, affected the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. The ionic radius, valence state, and configuration of the dopant also affected the photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic activities of the catalysts on RB removal increased when $Ag^+$, $Al^{3+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were doped into the $TiO_2$ nanotubes, whereas such activities decreased as a result of $Mn^{2+}$ or $Ni^{2+}$ doping. In the presence of $Zn^{2+}$-doped $TiO_2$ nanotubes calcined at $550^{\circ}C$, the removal efficiency of RB within 50 min was 98.7%.

  • A photocatalyst which mixed by the commercialized P25-TiO2 and a synthesized AgxO was used in an appropriate weight ratio to effectively produce hydrogen gas in this study. The AgxOs were synthesized with the conventional sol-gel method, and tetramethylammonium hydroxides were added at the synthesis process in order to stabilize the solutions, and then the solutions were heat-treated at the temperatures of -5, 25, and 50 ℃, resulted to obtain the three types of silver oxides. Physicochemical properties of the synthesized AgxOs were identified through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning emission microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the photolysis results of water/methanol (weight ratio 1:1) solution, the mixture of P25-TiO2/AgxO exhibited a significantly higher hydrogen gases evolution, compared to that of pure P25-TiO2. Additionally, the addition of H2O2 as an supplement oxidant and in AgxO synthesized at 50 ℃ improved the hydrogen production efficiency. In particular, the emitted hydrogen gases reached to 13,000 μmol during 8 hours when a mixed catalyst, AgxO of 0.1 g and P25-TiO2 of 0.9 g, were used.

  • Catalytic wet air oxidation of acetic acid over Mn-Ce based catalysts deposited on various supports ($SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$), $ZrSiO_4$, $ZrO_2(10wt%)/TiO_2$) have been carried out in high pressure microreactors. Also, promotional effects by small addition(O.5~1.0 wt%) of p-type semiconductors (CoO, $Ag_2O$, SnO) have been investigated. From the screening tests for initial activity ranking, both Mn(2.8)-Ce(7.2 wt%) and Ru(O.4)Mn(2.7)-Ce(6.9 wt%) supported on $TiO_2$ were selected as the promising reference candidates. In $Mn-Ce/TiO_2$ reference catalyst, addition of small amount of each p-type semiconductor (Co, Sn and Ag) resulted in activity promotional effect and the degree of the increase was in the following order: Co> Ag > Sn. Especially, $Mn-Ce/TiO_2$ promoted with 0.5 wt% Co gave the 2.6 folds activity increase compared to the reference case attributing to the surface area increase as well as synergy effect. In $Ru-Mn-Ce/TiO_2$ reference catalyst, only Co(1.0 wt%) promoted case showed a little reaction rate increase.

  • Metal doping was adopted to modify TiO2 (P-25) and enhance the photocatalytic degradation of harmful cyanides in aqueous solution. Ni, Cu, Co, and Ag doped TiO2 were found to be active photocatalysts for UV light induced degradation of aqueous cyanides generating cyanate, nitrate and ammonia as main nitrogen-containing products. The photoactivity of Ni doped TiO2 was greatly affected by the state of Ni, that is, the crystal size and the degree of reduction of Ni. The modification effects of some mixed oxides, that is, Ni-Cu/TiO2 were also studied. The activity of Ni-Cu/TiO2 for any ratio of Cu/Ni was higher than that of Ni- or Cu-doped TiO2, and the catalyst at the Cu/Ni ratio of 0.3 showed the highest activity for cyanide conversion.

  • In this study, ZnO, which is widely known as a non $TiO_2$ photocatalyst, was synthesized using coprecipitation method and Ag was added in order to improve the catalytic performance. The physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized ZnO and Ag/ZnO particles were checked using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), photoluminescence (PL), and photocurrent measurements. The performance of catalysts was tested by $H_2$ production using the photolysis of $H_2O$ with MeOH. By adding Ag which plays a role as an electron capture on the ZnO catalyst, the performance increased due to the recombination of excited electrons and holes. In particular, $8.60{\mu}mol\;g^{-1}$ $H_2$ was produced after 10 h reaction over the 0.50 mol% Ag/ZnO.

  • Nonthermal plasma-driven catalysis (PDC) was investigated for the decomposition of benzene and toluene as model compounds of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at atmospheric pressure and low temperature. Two types of catalysts Ag/$TiO_{2}$ and Pt/$\gamma-Al_{2}O_{3}$ were tested in this study. The amount of catalysts packed in the PDC reactor did not influence on the decomposition efficiency of benzene. The type of catalysts also had no influence on the decomposition efficiency of toluene and carbon balance. The Ag/$TiO_{2}$ catalyst showed constant $CO_{2}$ selectivity of about $73\%$ regardless of the specific input energy. However, the selectivity of $CO_{2}$ was greatly enhanced with the Pt/$\gamma-Al_{2}O_{3}$ catalysts, and reached $97\%$ at 205 J/L. Two test runs with 20 fold difference in the gas flow clearly indicated that lab-scale data can be successfully applied for the scaling-up of PDC system.
