The synthesis of biologically active 1H-1,4-diazepines 4a-d and 3H-1,5-benzodiazepines 5a-d in good yields, from the heterocyclization reaction of 2-(4-methylthio benzenesulfonyl)-1,3-dimethyl/1-methyl-3-phenyl/1,3-diphenyl/1-methyl-3-ethoxy propane-1,3-dione 3a-d with ethylenediamine (EDA) and o-phenylenediamine (o-PDA), respectively, in the presence of silica sulfuric acid (SSA) is described. The novel ${\beta}$-diketones/${\beta}$-ketoesters 3a-d were synthesized by the condensation reaction of 4-methylthiobenzenesulfonyl chloride 1 with various ${\beta}$-diketones/${\beta}$-ketoesters 2a-d. All structures of the newly synthesized compounds were elucidated by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The compounds 4a-d and 5a-d have been screened for antimicrobial, antifungal and anthelmintic activity.

The rate constants of the nucleophilic addition reaction of 3-mercaptopropionic acid to the ${\beta},\;{\beta}$-diethoxycarbonylstryene derivatives (H, p-OCH$_3$, 3,4,5-(OCH$_3)_3$, 3,4-methylenedioxy) were determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometry, and rate equation which could be applied over a wide pH range was obtained. On the basis of pH-rate profile and the presence of general base catalysis, a plausible mechanism of this addition reaction was propound:Below pH 6.0 the reaction was initiated by the addition of neutral 3-mercaptopropionic acid molecule, and in the range of pH 6.0∼8.0, a neutral 3-mercaptopropionic acid molecule and a sulfide anion competitively attacked to the double bond. Above pH 8.0, the reaction proceeded through the addition of a sulfide anion.

This study investigates the relationship between South Korean youths' Confucian values and sense of citizen ethics while presenting outlook on the sense of citizen ethics based on the theory of human nature. The purpose of this study, by doing so, is to present educational measures. For this purpose, empirical research method was applied in this study. In the empirical study, youths were surveyed and the answers were statistically analyzed and discussed with a view to achieve the study purpose. In the empirical research part of the study, Korean youths' awareness on Confucian values was examined along with its relationship with the sense of citizen ethics. The effect of Confucian values on sense of citizen ethics and their relationship were analyzed to evaluate the receptivity of youths on Confucian ideas and usefulness of sense of citizen ethics. This study investigated a total of final 311 sets of data from male and female students at middle and high schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi, South Korea. First, to identify the youths' Confucian values and level of sense of citizen ethics, descriptive statistical analysis was conducted. As a result, the survey subjects were found to have, concerning the Confucian values, world view M=3.54, human relations view M=3.66, morality cultivation M=3.76, and social order M=3.45, higher than 3.0 to represent positive levels. The morality cultivation, in particular, was recorded the highest among all whereas the social order was relatively lower, which represents the degree of relying on Confucian values to establish social order. Second, the sub-variables of Confucian values were verified according to the personal characteristics of the surveyed youths and differences in their entire perception was investigated. As a result, according to gender, morality cultivation was found higher in female students (M=3.85) than in male students (M=3.64). According to the subjective economic level of their household, world view was found higher in upper class (M=3.98) than middle-low class (M=3.25) and low class (M=3.22) while human relations view was found higher in middle-upper class (M=3.79) than low class (M=3.46). As for the family type, morality cultivation was found higher in extended family (M=3.83) than nuclear family (M=3.62); and social order was higher in extended family (M=3.54) than nuclear family (M=3.36). Third, to verify the study theme of identifying the effects of youths' Confucian values on sense of citizen morality, hierarchical regression analysis was employed in this study, which used the multi-level model of multiple regression analysis. As a result, the Confucian values was found to have significant positive (+) correlations with the entire sense of citizen ethics in order of human relations view(${\beta}=.499$), world view(${\beta}=.412$), social order(${\beta}=.341$), and morality cultivation(${\beta}=.241$). Confucian value showed significant positive (+) correlations with autonomy in order of morality cultivation(${\beta}=.458$), human relations view(${\beta}=.454$), social order(${\beta}=.362$), and world view(${\beta}=.158$). Confucian values was found to have significant positive (+) correlations with community spirit in order of human relations view(${\beta}=.295$), social order(${\beta}=.281$), and morality cultivation(${\beta}=.232$). As shown in the findings above, youths' Confucian values was found to have significant positive (+) effects on the sense of citizen ethics. It is noted that the higher the Confucian values, the more positive the sense of citizen ethics would be. Consequentially, the Confucian values was identified to play an important role in the sense of citizen ethics in the modern society. Based on this analysis, this study presented specific measures - the necessity and possibility of education on sense of citizen ethics under the theory of human nature. To this end, this study proposed to find an optimal interface between the contemporary sense of citizen ethics and Confucian ethics through the respect for human life and nature, man of virtue as the ideal human model, and united society as a desirable society model.

The purpose of this study was to understand the evolutionary relationships between fish and other vertebrates which had DNA with the genetic defects in homoglobin expression, with comparison to the nucleotide homologies of the ${\beta}$-globin genes. The predicted amino acid sequence from carp ${\beta}$-globin gene was compared with those of other vertebrates from the published data. The nucleotide homologies of the predicted amino acid sequence from the carp ${\beta}$-globin gene with those of goldfish and mirror carp were high, and the rates were 97.3% and 93.9%, respectively. On the other hand, with the previously reported ${\beta}$-globins of goat, frog, human, rat, goose, chicken, and duck, it showed low homology ranging from 45.9 to 58.1%. The carp ${\beta}$-globin has one inserted amino acid residue, which was also found in other fish ${\beta}$globin, but not in other vertebrate ${\beta}$-globins.

This study intended to search for measures to effectively improve and manage the job performance and personality of dental hygienists. In this study, the effects on job performance of the following variables were analyzed: emotional leadership, commitment, and patient-orientation. The subjects of the study were 328 dental hygienists who were working in a dental clinic and the assessment was made based on a self-administered questionnaire. T-test, one-way ANOVA, and Stepwise multiple regression were performed for analysis. The average of emotional leadership was 3.48 points, and commitment was 3.30 points. Also, the average of patient-orientation was 3.95 points and that of job performance was 3.39 points. Emotional leadership and commitment, as well as patient-orientation and job performance, showed positive correlation (p<0.001). The factor with the highest correlation with job performance was patient-orientation (${\beta}=0.306$), followed by the following: relationship management (${\beta}=0.209$); age (${\beta}=0.162$); self-awareness (${\beta}=0.139$); social-awareness (${\beta}=0.123$); and clinic type (${\beta}=0.101$). Based from the results of the study, there is a need to recognize the relationship among emotional leadership, commitment, and patient-orientation in connection with job performance.

$\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ nanorods were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method using nickel-oxide nanoparticle as a catalyst and gallium metal powder as a source material. The average diameter of nanorods was around 160 nm and the average length was $4{\mu}m$. Also, we confirmed that the synthesis of nanorods follows the vapor-solid growth mechanism. From the results of X-ray diffraction and HR-TEM observation, it can be found that the synthesized nanorods consisted of a typical core-shell structure with single-crystalline $\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ core with a monoclinic crystal structure and an outer amorphous gallium oxide layer. Li/$\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ nanorods cell delivered capacity of 867 mAh/g-$\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ at first discharge. Although the Li/$\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ nanorods cell showed low coulombic efficiency at first cycle, the cell exhibited stable cycle life property after fifth cycle.

Background : Transforming growth factor-$\beta$(TGF-$\beta$) may play a role in a variety of fibroproliferative disorders including pulmonary fibrosis via the induction of extracellular matrix accumulation. TGF-$\beta$ not only stimulates extracellular matrix production, but also decreases matrix degradation. Interstial lung diseases have demonstrated marked expression of TGF-$\beta$. Methods : To evaluate the possible role of TGF-$\beta$ in human pulmonary fibrosis, by using neutralizing antibody of TGF-$\beta$ we investigated immunohistochemically the expression of TGF-$\beta$ in the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of the 5 normal cases for the control, and a couple of pieces of tissues taken out of 3 cases with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, 3 cases with ILD from bleomycin toxicity, 3 cases with ILD from sarcoidosis, and 3 cases with ILD from eosinophilic granuloma. Results : In the 5 normal cases for the control, the TGF-$\beta$ was expressed in bronchial and alveolar epithelial cells. Up-regulation of the TGF-$\beta$ expression was showed in the interstitial fibroblast cells of alveolar septa in 5 pieces and proliferated alveolar pneumocytes in 1 piece among 6 pieces tissues taken out of 3 cases with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Also up-regulation of the TGF-$\beta$ expression was showed in alveolar lining pneumocytes, intra-alveolar mononuclear cells, and epithelioid cells in most of cases of ILD from bleomycin toxicity, sarcoidosis and eosinophilic granuloma. Conclusion : These findings suggest that up-regulation of the TGF-$\beta$are involved in pathogenesis of interstitial lung fibrosis from variety of causes.

Thermus caldophilus GK24 was selected as sources of thermostable $\beta$-galactosidase from a survey of genus Thermus. T. caldophilus GK24 (Tca) $\beta$-galactosidase was found to be inducible. The enzyme was optimally active at 75$\circ$C. Enzyme induction was achieved by addition of lactose, galactose and cellobiose to basal media. The addition of glucose to culture media had a repressive effect on further enzyme synthesis. T caldophilus GK24 was tested for production of $\beta$-galactosidase by addition of various concentration of lactose, galactose and cellobiose to standard media. Cellobiose was found to be effective for the $\beta$-galactosidase induction. The optimal induction medium for production of $\beta$-galactosidase was composed of 0.2% cellobiose, 0.3% bactotryptone, 0.3% yeast extract, basal salts and Tris/HCI(pH 7.8). The activity of the enzyme in the optimal induction medium increased nearly 16.5-fold compared to the standard medium. Tca $\beta$-galactosidase was detected when cell extracts was subjected to electrophoresis in a nondenaturing polyacryamide gel and stained for activity with 6-bromo-2-naphtyl-$\beta$-D-galactopyranoside(BNG).

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effects of silver spike point (SSP) low frequency electrical stimulation on plasma ${\beta}-endorphin$ activities measured by radio- immunoassay from normal volunteer and the effects of ${\beta}-endorphin$ on 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin)-induced contraction investigated by isometric tension methode in rats. The current of 3 Hz continue type, but not 100 Hz continue type, of SSP low frequency electrical stimulation significantly increased in plasma ${\beta}-endorphin$ from normal volunteer. The endothelial cell-dependent 5-HT-induced contractions were inhibited by ${\beta}-endorphin$ $1{\mu}M$. These results suggest that the ${\beta}-endorphin$ regulates nociceptive-like substance, such as 5-HT, in part and that the SSP low frequency electrical stimulation, specifically current of low frequency of 3 Hz continue type, significantly increases plasma ${\beta}-endorphin$ from normal volunteer.

Five steroids and two norsesquiterpene glycosides were isolated from the methanol extract of H. japonicus. Their structures were determined by means of physio-chemical and spectral data to be friedelin (1), stigmast-5-en-3-${\beta}$-ol (${\beta}$-sitosterol) (2), 7-keto-${\beta}$-sitosterol (3), 6${\beta}$-hydroxy-4-stigmasten-3-one (4), 7${\alpha}$-hydroxy-${\beta}$-sitosterol (5), 3-hydroxy-4,4-dimethyl-4-butyrolactone (6), daucosterol (7), (6S, 9S)-roseoside (8), and (9S)-drummondol-9-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (spinoside B) (9). The compounds 1, 3, 4, and 6 - 9 were first isolated from this plant source.
