  • Experimental study was performed regarding the effects of disc-like filler orientation and contents on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of polypropylene composites using the three dimensional ellipsoids ($a_1$ > $a_2$ > $a_3$) analyzed by two aspect ratios(${\rho}_{\alpha}=a_1/a_3$and ${\rho}_{\beta}=a_1/a_2$). Measured data were compared with the theoretical approaches proposed by Lee et al. Mica and talc were useed as disk-like fillers in the composites. As experimental results, ${\alpha}_{11}/{\alpha}_m$ decreased down to ca. 0.56 with mica content of 20 wt% and the aspect ratios, ${\rho}_{\alpha}=13.5$, ${\rho}_{\beta}=1.8$. However, ${\alpha}_{33}/{\alpha}_m$ increased to more than 1. In the case of talc, ${\alpha}_{11}/{\alpha}_m$ decreased to ca. 0.63 with 20 wt% and ${\rho}_{\alpha}=3.7$, ${\rho}_{\beta}=1.4$. Finally, the longitudinal CTEs (${\alpha}_{11}$) of polypropylene composites decreased as filler contents increased, but normal CTE (${\alpha}_{33}$) increased in the low filler contents like the theory.

  • These experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of the administration of exogenous PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ on hormone concentrations and follicular development in early postpartum(pp) Korean native goats. 1. Plasma PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ concentrations in PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ treated goals showed a gradual increase from a low on day 2 (GR-1 : 10 day-treatment group: 6.35$\pm$0.5 and GR-2; 4 day-treatment group: 0.22$\pm$0.2 pg/$m\ell$, respectively) to reach a peak of 21.18$\pm$1.6 or 4.21 $\pm$0.4 pg/$m\ell$ on day 4 after treatment of PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$. 2. Plasma PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ concentrations in GR-1 goats averaged 9.08 $\pm$1.2 pg/$m\ell$ compared with 5.44$\pm$ 1.8 pg/$m\ell$ in GR-2 goats the day before treatment of PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$. Mean PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ concentrations thereafter remained low during the treatment period but PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ concentrations did not differ between the two group. 3. Plasma concentrations of estradiol-17 $\beta$ (E,) in PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ - treated group were decreased gradually until 2 days after PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ treatment but mean $E_2$ concentrations began to increase on 3 days and were Inaximal on the 4 days after treatment. 4. Plasma lulenizing hormone (LH) concentrations in PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ - treated goats were slightly higher than in controls but mean LH concentrations did not differ between the two treatment groups. 5. Plasma prolactin (PRL) concentrations were suppressed in both GR-1(10 day-treatment group) and GR-2(4 day-treatment group) goats compared to saline controls but mean PRL concentrations remained lower in PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ treated animals during post-treatment period. 6. The mean number of small and medium follicles present when PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ was administrated was similar in all does but the increase in number of large follicles($\geq$4mm) tended to be higher in PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ treated group than controls. These results suggest that concentrations of PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ and estradiol-17$\beta$ were positively correlared with follicular diameter. We conclude that PG $F_{2{\alpha}}$ treatment stimulates follicular development similarly in both GR-1 and GR-2 group.

  • To elucidate enzymatic properties of $\alpha$-galactosidases (EC3, 2, 1, 22) from germinated soybean and Aspergillus niger changes in the enzyme activities and oligosaccharide contents during germination of soybean were determined and $\alpha$-galactosidases from germinated soybean and wheat bran culture of Aspergillus niger were purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation, ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration. Their chemical and enzymatic properties were investigated and the results obtained were summarized as follows : 1. $\alpha$-Galactosidase activity of soybean was maximized when it was germinated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 120 hours. And raffinose and stachyose in soybean were decomposed completely after 96 hours and 120 hours of germination, respectively. 2. The highest level of $\alpha$-Galactosidase activity was obtained when Aspergillus niger was grown on wheat bran medium at $30^{\circ}C$ for 96 hours. 3. Soybean $\alpha$-galactosidase was purified by 6.6 fold by ammonium slufate fractionation, ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-Cellulose and Sephadex A-50., and gel filtration on Sephadex G-150. Its specific activity was 825 units/mg protein and the yield was 2.5% of the total activity of crude extracts. 4. Aspergillus niger $\alpha$-galactosidase was purified by 23.7 fold. Its specific activity was 1,229 units/mg protein and the yield was 14% of the total activity of wheat bran culture. 5. The purified $\alpha$-galactosidases of soybean and Aspergillus niger were found to be homogeneous by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and by HPLC. 6. Chemical properties of the purified $\alpha$-galactosidases were : 1) The soybean $\alpha$-galactosidase was monomeric and its molecular weight was estimated to be 30,000 by SDS-PAGE whereas the Aspergillus niger $\alpha$-galactosidase was a tetrameric glycoprotein which consisted of identical subunits with molecular weight of 28,000 each.

  • For A and B, $-1{\leq}B<A{\leq}1$, let P[A, B] be the class of functions p analytic in the unit disk E with P(0) = 1 and subordinate to $\frac{1+Az}{1+Bz}$. We introduce the class $T_{\alpha}[A,B]$ of functions $f:f(z)=z+\sum\limits_{n=2}^{{\infty}}a_nz^n$ which are analytic in E and for $z{\in}E$, ${\alpha}{\geq}0$, $[(1-{\alpha}){\frac{f(z)}{z}}+{\alpha}f^{\prime}(z)]{\in}P[A,B]$. It is shown that, for ${\alpha}{\geq}1$, $T_{\alpha}[A,B]$ consists entirely of univalent functions and the radius of univalence for $f{\in}T_{\alpha}[A,B]$, $0<{\alpha}<1$ is obtained. Coefficient bounds and some other properties of this class are studied. Some radii problems are also solved.

  • Given operators X and Y on a Hilbert space H, an interpolating operator is a bounded operator A such that AX = Y. In this article, we investigate compact interpolation problems for vectors in a tridiagonal algebra. Let L be a subspace lattice acting on a separable complex Hilbert space H and Alg L be a tridiagonal algebra. Let X = $(x_{ij})\;and\;Y\;=\;(y_{ij})$ be operators acting on H. Then the following are equivalent: (1) There exists a compact operator A = $(x_{ij})$ in AlgL such that AX = Y. (2) There is a sequence {$\alpha_n$} in $\mathbb{C}$ such that {$\alpha_n$} converges to zero and $$y_1\;_j=\alpha_1x_1\;_j+\alpha_2x_2\;_j\;y_{2k}\;_j=\alpha_{4k-1}x_{2k\;j}\;y_{2k+1\;j}=\alpha_{4k}x_{2k\;j}+\alpha_{4k+1}x_{2k+1\;j}+\alpha_{4k+2}x_{2k+2\;j\;for\;all\;k\;\epsilon\;\mathbb{N}$$.

  • In rapidly growing tumors, hypoxia commonly develops due to the imbalance between $O_2$ consumption and supply. Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-$1{\alpha}$ is a transcription factor responsible for tumor growth and angiogenesis in the hypoxic microenvironment; thus, its inhibition is regarded as a promising strategy for cancer therapy. Given that CamKII or PARP inhibitors are emerging anticancer agents, we investigated if they have the potential to be developed as new HIF-$1{\alpha}$-targeting drugs. When treating various cancer cells with the inhibitors, we found that a CamKII inhibitor, KN-62, effectively suppressed HIF-$1{\alpha}$ specifically in hepatoma cells. To examine the effect of KN-62 on HIF-$1{\alpha}$-driven gene expression, we analyzed the EPO-enhancer reporter activity and mRNA levels of HIF-$1{\alpha}$ downstream genes, such as EPO, LOX and CA9. Both the reporter activity and the mRNA expression were repressed by KN-62. We also found that KN-62 suppressed HIF-$1{\alpha}$ by impairing synthesis of HIF-$1{\alpha}$ protein. Based on these results, we propose that KN-62 is a candidate as a HIF-$1{\alpha}$-targeting anticancer agent.

  • A strain YB-4 producing the extracellular $\alpha$-galactosidase was isolated from soil, and has been identified as Streptomyces sp. on the basis of its cultural, morphological and physiological properties. The partially purified $\alpha$-galactosidase was most active on paranitrophenyl-$\alpha$-D-galactopyranoside at pH 6.0 and 6$0^{\circ}C$. The enzyme retained 90% of its maximum activity between pH 4.0 and pH 10.0 after pre-incubation for 1 h. The enzyme was able to hydrolyze oligomeric substrates such as melibiose, raffinose and stachyose to liberate galactose residue, indicating that the $\alpha$-galactosidase of Steptomyces sp. YB-4 hydrolyzed $\alpha$-1,6 linkage.

  • Purpose: It is well known that the radiosensitivity of tumor cells can be significantly reduced under hypoxic conditions. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 $\alpha$ (HIF-1 $\alpha$) plays a pivotal role in the essential adaptive responses to hypoxia. Therefore this study investigated the relationship between HIF-1 $\alpha$ expression and radiosensitivity. M Mouse hepatoma cell line hepafcic7 and HIF-1 $\beta$-deficient mutant cell line hepa1C4 were used to analyze the role of HIF-1 a. on radiosensitivity. These cells were exposed for 6 h to desferrioxamine (DFX) before radiation. HIF-1$\alpha$. expression was examined by Western blot. Apoptosis was assessed by DNA fragmentation, propidium iodide staining, and apoptotic cell death detection ELISA kit. Radiation sensitivity was determined using MTT assay. The radiobioiogical parameters, surviving fractions at 2 Gy and 8 Gy, and mean inactivation dose (MID) from the linear-quadratic model were used to assess radiation sensitivity in the statistical analyses. Results: The expression of HIF-1 $\alpha$. was Increased, whereas apoptosis was decreased, by radiation In the presence of DFX In hepal cl c7, but not In hepal C4. The radlosensitivity of hepal C4 cells was not significantly affected by DFX treatment. The radiosensitivlty of hepal cl c7 cells was significantly decreased in the presence of DFX Conclusion: The expression of HIF-1 w by hypoxia-mimic agent DFX reduced apoptosls and radiosensitlvity in mouse hepatoma cell line hepafclc7. These results suggested that HIF-1 u could be Induced by irradiation in hypoxic ceils of tumor masses, and that this mlght Increase radioresistance in hypoxic cells.

  • The growth-inhibiting effects of Pinus densiflpora leaf-derived materials on nine human intestinal bacteria were investigated using the impregnated paper disk method, and their activities were compared with those of 13 commercially available terpenes. The biologically active constituent of the extract of P densiflora leaf was characterized as the monoterpene (1R)-(+)-$\alpha$-pinene by various spectroscopic analyses. Responses varied according to bacterial strain, chemicals, and dose. At 10 mg/disk, limonene and (1R)-(+)-$\alpha$-pinene strongly inhibited the growth of Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, without adverse effects on the growth of five lactic acid-bacteria (Bifidobacterium adolescentis, B. bifidum, B. longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and L. casei). Little or no inhibition against seven bacteria was observed with anethole, borneol, camphor, caryophyllene, 1,8-cineole, estragole, linalool, and $\alpha$-terpineol. Structure-activity relationship revealed that (1R)-(+)-$\alpha$-pinene had more growth-inhibiting activity against C. perfringens than (1R)-(+)-$\beta$-, (1S-(-)-$\alpha$-, and (1S-(-)-$\beta$-pinenes. Furthermore, the growth-inhibition against L. casei was much more pronounced in (1R)-(+)-$\beta$- and (In-(-)-$\beta$-pinenes than (1R)-(+)-$\alpha$- and (1S)-(-)-$\alpha$-pinenes. These results indicate that the (+)-$\alpha$ form seems to be required against C. perfringens and $\beta$ form against L. casei for growth-inhibiting activity. Morphologically, most strains of C. perfringens were damaged and disappeared at 5 and 2 mg/disk of (1R)-(+)-$\alpha$-pinene. Morphological study revealed that (1R)-(+)-$\alpha$-pinene had more growth-inhibiting activity against C. perfringens than (1R)-(+)-$\beta$-, (1S)-(-)-$\alpha$-, and (1S)-(-)-$\beta$-pinenes. As naturally occurring growth-inhibiting agents, the Pinus leaf-derived materials described above could be useful preventive agents against diseases caused by harmful intestinal bacteria such as clostridia.

  • For an endomorphism ${\alpha}$ of R, in [1], a module $M_R$ is called ${\alpha}$-compatible if, for any $m{\in}M$ and $a{\in}R$, ma = 0 iff $m{\alpha}(a)$ = 0, which are a generalization of ${\alpha}$-reduced modules. We study on the relationship between the quasi-Baerness and p.q.-Baer property of a module MR and those of the polynomial extensions (including formal skew power series, skew Laurent polynomials and skew Laurent series). As a consequence we obtain a generalization of [2] and some results in [9]. In particular, we show: for an ${\alpha}$-compatible module $M_R$ (1) $M_R$ is p.q.-Baer module iff $M[x;{\alpha}]_{R[x;{\alpha}]}$ is p.q.-Baer module. (2) for an automorphism ${\alpha}$ of R, $M_R$ is p.q.-Baer module iff $M[x,x^{-1};{\alpha}]_{R[x,x^{-1};{\alpha}]}$ is p.q.-Baer module.
