  • In this study, numerical simulations were performed using the ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model of KFLOW for the transitional flow over the KARI-11-180 airfoil. Numerical results of KFLOW were compared with experimental data and two other numerical results of XFoil and MSES. Fully turbulence model was predicted high skin friction drag than transition model because fully turbulence model could not solve the transitional flow. Numerical predictions using the ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model of KFLOW show a good agreement with experimental data and other numerical results. Present numerical results were confirmed the state of drag bucket due to dramatic changing of the transition location on the airfoil surface.

  • A numerical simulation for a nonslender BWB UCAV configuration with a rounded leading edge and span of 1.0 m was performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. Numerical results were compared with experimental data obtained at a free stream velocity of 50 m/s and at angles of attack from -4 to $26^{\circ}$. The Reynolds number, based on the mean chord length, is $1.25{\times}106$. 3D multi-block hexahedral grids are used to guarantee good grid quality and to efficiently resolve the boundary layer. Menter's shear stress transport model and two transition models (${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model and ${\gamma}$ model) were used to assess the effect of the laminar/turbulent transition on the flow characteristics. Aerodynamic coefficients, such as drag, lift, and the pitching moment, were compared with experimental data. Drag and lift coefficients of the UCAV were predicted well while the pitching moment coefficient was underpredicted at high angles of attack and influenced strongly by the selected turbulent models. After assessing the pressure distribution, skin friction lines and velocity field around UCAV configuration, it was found that the transition effect should be considered in the prediction of aerodynamic characteristics of vortical flow fields.

  • In the present study, the model-scale Propeller Open Water (POW) tests for the propeller of 176K bulk carrier and 8600TEU container ship were conducted through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. In order to solve the incompressible viscous flow field, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RaNS) equations were employed as the governing equations. The γ-Reθ(gamma-Re-theta) transition model combined with the SST k-ωturbulence model was introduced to describe the laminar-turbulence transition considering the low Reynolds number of model-scale. Firstly, the flow simulation developing over a flat plate was performed to verify the transition modeling, in which the wall shear stresses were compared with experiments and other numerical results. Then, to investigate the effect of the model, the CFD simulation for the POW test was performed and the simulated propeller performance was validated through comparison with the experiment conducted at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO).

  • Effects of inflow Reynolds number (Re), turbulence intensity (I) and pressure gradient on the transition flow over a blade section were studied using the ${\gamma}-Re{\theta}$ transition model (STAR-CCM+). Results show that the $Re_T$ (transition Re) at the transition location ($P_T$) varies strongly with Re, I and the magnitude of pressure gradient. The $Re_T$ increases significantly with the increase of the magnitude of favorable pressure gradient. It demonstrates that the $Re_T$ on different blade sections of a rotating propeller are different. More importantly, when there is strong adverse pressure gradient, the $P_T$ is always close to the minimum pressure point. Based on these conclusions, the $P_T$ on model propeller blade surface can be estimated. Numerical investigations of pressure distribution and transition flow on a propeller blade section prove these findings. Last, a simple method was proposed to estimate the $P_T$ only based on the propeller geometry and the advance coefficient.

  • This paper investigates the effects of inlet turbulence conditions and near-wall treatment methods on the heat transfer prediction of gas turbine vanes within the range of engine relevant turbulence conditions. The two near-wall treatment methods, the wall-function and low-Reynolds number method, were combined with the SST and ${\omega}RSM$ turbulence model. Additionally, the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, SSG RSM, and $SST_+{\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model were adopted for the purpose of comparison. All computations were conducted using a commercial CFD code, CFX, considering a three-dimensional, steady, compressible flow. The conjugate heat transfer method was applied to all simulation cases with internally cooled NASA turbine vanes. The CFD results at mid-span were compared with the measured data under different inlet turbulence conditions. In the SST solutions, on the pressure side, both the wall-function and low-Reynolds number method exhibited a reasonable agreement with the measured data. On the suction side, however, both wall-function and low-Reynolds number method failed to predict the variations of heat transfer coefficient and temperature caused by boundary layer flow transition. In the ${\omega}RSM$ results, the wall-function showed reasonable predictions for both the heat transfer coefficient and temperature variations including flow transition onset on suction side, but, low-Reynolds methods did not properly capture the variation of the heat transfer coefficient. The $SST_+{\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model showed variation of the heat transfer coefficient on the transition regions, but did not capture the proper transition onset location, and was found to be much more sensitive to the inlet turbulence length scale. Overall, the Reynolds stress model and wall function configuration showed the reasonable predictions in presented cases.

  • Flow fields around a KARI-11-180 airfoil, SDM and transonic body are numerically simulated by using an unstructured meshes based compressible flow solver developed at KAIST. RANS equations are solved to analyse the flow fields and Roe's FDS method is adopted to evaluate convective fluxes. Turbulence effect of the flow fields is modeled by a SA model, SST model and ${\gamma}-{\widetilde{Re}}_{{\theta}t}$ model. It is found that smaller drag coefficients are predicted for the KARI-11-180 airfoil when a transition phenomenon is considered and small deviations exist between CFD and EFD results. For the SDM, flow separation is observed at a leading edge and calculated aerodynamic properties show similar tendencies to experimental results. A shock wave on main wings of the transonic body is successfully captured by the present flow solver at a Mach number 0.9. Estimated pressure profiles by means of the present CFD method also agree well with those of wind tunnel results.

  • This paper presents the dimensionless wall distance, y+ effect on SST turbulent model for wind turbine blade. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI wind turbine was used for the study, which the wind tunnel and structural test data has publicly available. The near wall treatment and turbulent characteristics have important role for proper CFD simulation. Most of the CFD development in this area is focused on advanced turbulence model closures including second moment closure models, and so called Low-Reynolds (low-Re) number and two-layer turbulence models. However, in many cases CFD aerodynamic predictions based on these standard models still show a large degree of uncertainty, which can be attributed to the use of the $\epsilon$-equation as the turbulence scale equation and the associated limitations of the near wall treatment. The present paper demonstrates the y+ definition effect on SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulent model with advanced automatic near wall treatment model and Gamma theta transitional model for transition from lamina to turbulent flow using commercial ANSYS-CFX. In all cases the SST model shows to be superior, as it gives more accurate predictions and is less sensitive to grid variations.

  • A computational simulation for a nonslender BWB UCAV configuration with rounded leading edge and span of 1.0m was performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. The freestream is 50m/s over -4 to 26 degree A.o.A.s. Reynolds number based on the mean chord length is $1.25{\times}10^6$. 3D multi block hexahedral grids are used which allow good grid quality and ease to capture boundary layer. ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model as well as $k-{\omega}$ SST model is employed to assess the effect of transition for flow behavior. Drag and lift of the UCAV were well predicted while $C_M$ is under predicted at high angle of attacks and influenced by the turbulence models strongly. After assessing pressure distribution, skin friction lines and velocity field around the UCAV configuration, it was found that transition effect should be considered to enhance the prediction of aerodynamic behavior by a vortical flowfield.
