Magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect of Sr-doped Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 compounds

  • In this work, we pointed out that Sr substitution for Ca leads to modify the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of $Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3-x}Sr_xMnO_3$ compounds. Analyzing temperature dependence of magnetization, M(T), proves that the Curie temperature ($T_C$) increased with increasing Sr content (x); $T_C$ value is found to be 130-260 K for x = 0.0-0.3, respectively. Using the phenomenological model and M(T,H) data measured at several applied magnetic field, the magnetocaloric effect of $Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3-x}Sr_xMnO_3$ compounds has been investigated through their temperature and magnetic field dependences of magnetic entropy change ${\Delta}S_m$(T,H) and the change of the specific heat change ${\Delta}C_P$(T,H). Under an applied magnetic field change of 10 kOe, the maximum value of $-{\Delta}S_m$ is found to be about $3J/kg{\cdot}K$, and the maximum and minimum values of ${\Delta}C_P$(T) calculated to be about ${\pm}60J/kg{\cdot}K$ for x = 0.3 sample. Additionally, the critical behaviors of $Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3-x}Sr_xMnO_3$ compounds around their $T_C$ have been also analyzed. Results suggested a coexistence of the ferromagnetic short- and long-range interactions in samples. Moreover, Sr-doping favors establishing the short-range interactions.

  • Proton behavior was investgated for the redox reaction of trans-[$Co(en)_2(NO_2)Cl]^+$ with aqueous Fe(II) in acidic solution by UV/vis-spectrophotometric method. The reaction order of proton is first one and the rate constant(k$_H^+$) is 6.7 ${\times}\;10^{-1}L^2/mol^2{\cdot}min$. The values of $E_a$, ${\{Delta}H^{\neq}$, ${\{Delta}S^{\neq}$ are 14.5 Kcal/mol, 13.8 Kcal/mol and -18.3e.u., respectively. As the result of analysis of kinetic data, it has been found that this reaction proceeds through inner-sphere mechanism.

A Dominating Set Algorithm (지배집합 알고리즘)

  • This paper proposes a linear-time algorithm that has been designed to obtain an accurate solution for Dominating Set (DS) problem, which is known to be NP-complete due to the deficiency of polynomial-time algorithms that successfully derive an accurate solution to it. The proposed algorithm does so by repeatedly assigning vertex v with maximum degree ${\Delta}(G)$among vertices adjacent to the vertex v with minimum degree ${\delta}(G)$ to Minimum Independent DS (MIDS) as its element and removing all the incident edges until no edges remain in the graph. This algorithm finally transforms MIDS into Minimum DS (MDS) and again into Minimum Connected DS (MCDS) so as to obtain the accurate solution to all DS-related problems. When applied to ten different graphs, it has successfully obtained accurate solutions with linear time complexity O(n). It has therefore proven that Dominating Set problem is rather a P-problem.

Mineral Chemistry and Stable Isotope Composition of Sericite from the Sangdong Sericite Mine in the Kimhae Area (김해지역 상동광상산 견운모의 광물화학 및 안전동위원소 조성)

  • Mineral chemistry and stable isotope compositions of sericites from the Sangdong mine in the Kimhae area, Kyungsangnamdo, were studied. The Sangdong sericite deposit occurs in rhyolitic tuff of late Cretaceous age and considers to have been fonned by the hydrothennal alteration. The sericites are classified as $2M_1$ polytype and are characterized by less celadonite substitution indicating muscovite-phengite series. Their compositions are very close to that of the ideal muscovite but net layer charge ranges 1.71~1.91 which is less than 2 per formula unit of ideal muscovite. Predominant interlayer cation is K and K/(K+Na) ratio ranges 0.91 and 0.93. ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of sericites and quartz separated from the ore range 7.70~9.07 and 8.20~10.87‰, respectively. The formation temperature of sericite can be estimated as $315{\sim}340^{\circ}C$( based on ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of sericite and ${\delta}D$ value of of Cretaceous meteoric water. Their formation temperature discrepancy between coexisting sericite and quartz indicates that they are in isotopically inequilibrium. Two types of quartz, coarse grained phenocrysts and micrcrystalline aggregates are observed and the former must have been formed during volcanic eruption and remained isotopically unexchanged during hydrothermal alteration period. ${\delta}^{14}S$ values of pyrites range 1.9~4.5‰ which is within a range of volcanogenic sulfur, indicating magmatic source.

  • The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition in precipitation, groundwater and geothermal water were monitored over four-year period from 2001 to 2004 at the Yuseong catchment, Daejeon. By analyzing the long term rainfall pattern, we found out the drought cycle of 6 or 7 year. We fortunately revealed that the oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition of rain has progressively changed to heavier isotopic ratios from 2001 to 2004. The weighted mean values of ${\delta}^{18}O\;and\;{\delta}D$ of rain are calculated to be $-7.7%o\;and\;-51%o$, respectively. These isotopic values are much heavier than those of groundwater and geothermal water collected at the same period, which indicates that the rain or snow of the study area would not immediately affect the isotopic composition of groundwater or geothermal water. Comparing with the previous data, the groundwater and geothermal water collected at 1990 and 1992 year has the heaviest isotopic composition and afterwards their isotopic composition has been progressively shifted to the direction of lighter composition field.

Fluid Inclusion and Stable Isotope Studies of Mesothermal Gold Vein Deposits in Metamorphic Rocks of Central Sobaegsan Massif, Korea: Youngdong Area (소백산 육괴 중부 지역의 변성암에서 산출되는 중온형 금광상에 대한 유체 포유물 및 안정동위원소 연구. 영동지역)

  • Mesothermal gold deposits of the Heungdeok, Daewon and Ilsaeng mines in the Youngdong area occur in fault shear zones in Precambrian metamorphic rocks of central Sobaegsan Massif, Korea, and formed in single stage of massive quartz veins (0.3 to 3 m thick). Ore mineralogy is simple, consisting dominantly of pyrrhotite, sphalerite and galena with subordinate pyrite, chalcopyrite, electrum, tetrahedrite and native bismuth. Fluid inclusion data indicate that hydrothermal mineralization occurred at high temperatures (>240$^{\circ}$ to 400$^{\circ}$C) from $H_{2}O-CO_{2}(-CH_{4})$-NaCI fluids with salinities less than 12 wt. % equiv. NaC!. Fluid inclusions in vein quartz comprise two main types. These are, in decreasing order of abundance, type I (aqueous liquid-rich) and type II (carbonic). Volumetric proportion of the carbonic phase in type II inclusions varies widely in a single quartz grain. Estimated $CH_4$ contents in the carbonic phase of type II inclusions are 2 to 20 mole %. Relationship between homogenization temperature and salinity of fluid inclusions suggests a complex history of fluid evolution, comprising the early fluid's unmixing accompanying $CO_2$ effervescence and later cooling. Estimated pressures of vein filling are at least 2 kbars. The ore mineralization formed from a magmatic fluid with the ${\delta}^{34}S_{{\Sigma}S}$, ${\delta}^{18}O_{water}$ and ${\delta}D_{water}$ values of -2.1 to 2.2$\textperthousand$, 4.7 to 9.3$\textperthousand$ and -63 to -79$\textperthousand$, respectively. This study validates the application of a magmatic model for the genesis of mesothermal gold deposits in Youngdong area.

Syntheses of Polysiloxane-Bridged Dinuclear Metallocenes and Their Catalytic Activities

  • The polysiloxane-bridged dinuclear metallocenes $[(SiMe_2O)_n-SiMe_2(C_5H_4)_2][(C_9H_7)ZrCl_2]_2$ (n=1 (7), 2 (8), 3 (9)) have been generated as a model complex for the immobilized metallocene at silica surface by treating the respective disodium salts of the ligands with 2 equivalents of $(C_9H_7)ZrCl_3$ in THF. All three complexes are characterized by $^1H$ NMR and measurement of metal content through ICP-MS. It turned out that the values of ${\Delta}{\delta}=[{\delta}_d-{\delta}_p]$, the chemical shift difference between the distal $({\delta}_d)$ and proximal $({\delta}_p)$ protons, for the produced dinuclear compounds (0.47 for 7, 0.49 for 8, and 0.5 for 9) were larger than the Δδ value of the known ansa-type complex holding the same ligand as a chelating one, that is just the opposite to the normal trend. In order to compare polymerization behavior of the dinuclear metallocene with the corresponding mononuclear metallocene, (Cp)$(C_9H_7)ZrCl_2$ was separately prepared. To investigate the catalytic properties of the dinuclear complexes and mononuclear metallocenes ethylene polymerization has been conducted in the presence of MMAO. The polymerization results display the typical activity dependence on polymerization temperature for all complexes. The most important feature is that the polymers from the dinuclear metallocenes represent enormously improved molecular weight compared with the polymer from the corresponding mononuclear metallocene. In addition, the influence of the nature of the bridging ligand upon the reactivities of the dinuclear metallocenes has also been observed.

Use of Stable Carbon Isotope Ratios (${\delta}^{13}$C) for Identification of the Origin Organic Carbon in Benthic Food Webs in Youngil Bay, Korea

  • The analysis of stable carbon isotope ratios for benthic fauna was applied to identify the source of carbon in benthic food webs in Youngil Bay, Korea. The ${\delta}^{13}$C values of 9 invertebrate species collected in this area showed a narrow range between -20.5 and -16.3%$_o$ with a mean of-18.1 (${\pm}$1.1)"%$_o$. The results suggest that the major source of organic carbon for the benthic fauna of the lower estuarine reaches and the oceanic sites is autochthonous marine particulate organic matter. The contribution of organic matter from terrestrial and riverine sources to the diet of the benthic fauna in this area appears to be minor, despite the considerable inflow of riverine waters.

Stable isotope, Fluid Inclusion and Mineralogical Studies of the Samkwang Gold-Silver Deposits, Republic of Korea (삼광 금-은광상의 산출광물, 유체포유물 및 안정동위원소 연구)

  • The Samkwang gold-silver deposits consist of gold-silver-bearing hydrothermal massive quartz veins which filled the fractures along fault shear (NE, NW) zones within Precambrian banded or granitic gneiss of Gyeonggi massif. Ore mineralization of this deposits occurred within a single stage of quartz vein which was formed by multiple episodes of fracturing and healing. Based on vein mineralogy and paragenesis, massive quartz veins are divided into two main paragenetic stages which are separated by a major faulting event. Main ore mineralization occurred at stage I. Wall-rock alteration from this deposits occur as mainly sericitization, chloritization, silicification and minor amounts of pyritization, carbonitization, propylitization and argillitization. Ore minerals are composed mainly of arsenopyrite (29.21-32.24 As atomic %), pyrite, sphalerite (6.45-13.82 FeS mole %), chalcopyrite, galena with minor amounts of pyrrhotite, marcasite, electmm (39.98-66.82 Au atomic %) and argentite. Systematic studies of fluid inclusions in early quartz veins and microcracks indicate two contrasting physical-chemical conditions: 1). temperature (215-345$^{\circ}$C) and pressure (1296-2022 bar) event with $H_{2}O-CO_{2}-CH_{4}-NaCl$fluids (0.8-6.3 wt. %) related to the early sulfide deposition, 2). temperature (203-441$^{\circ}$C) and pressure (320 bar) event with $H2_{O}$-NaCI $\pm$ $CO_{2}$ fluids (5.7-8.8 wt. %) related to the late sulfide and electrum assemblage. The H20-NaCI $\pm$ $CO_{2}$ fluids represent fluids evolved through fluid unmixing of an $H_{2}O-CO_{2}-CH_{4}-NaCl$fluids due to decreases in fluid pressure and influenced of deepcirculated meteoric waters possibly related to uplift and unloading of the mineralizing suites. Calculated sulfur isotope compositions (${\delta}^{34}S_{fluid}$) of hydrothermal fluids (1.8-4.9$\textperthousand$) indicate that ore sulfur was derived from an igneous source. Measured and calculated oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions (${\delta}^{18}O_{I120}$, ${\delta}D$) of ore fluids (-5.9~10.9$\textperthousand$, -102~-87$\textperthousand$) indicate that mesothermal auriferous fluids at Samkwang gold-silver deposits were likely mixtures of $H_{2}O$-rich, isotopically less evolved meteoric water and magmatic fluids.
