This study was carried out to investigate the chemical components, and antioxidative and $anti-{\alpha}-glucosidase$ activities of Equisetum arvense extracts. In Equisetum arvense extracts were composed of 53.20% of crude fiber, 20.42% of crude ash, 15.32% of crude protein and 2.21% of crude fat. Potassium was the most predominant mineral and followed by phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and sodium. The contents of the unsaturated fatty acids, such as linolenic acid, linoleic acid, and palmitic acid, were higher than those of saturated fatty acids. Seventy percent ethanol extract exhibited antioxidative activity with $IC_{50}$ of $168.1\;{\mu}g/ml$. The Seventy percent methanol extract showed higher ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ inhibitory activity than other solvent extracts.

This study was carried out to investigate the total polyphenol, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitory activity, and antiproliferation activity of the citron seed. The citron seed were separated to hull and embryo, and extracted with n-hexane and 70% ethanol. Antioxidant activity of ethanol extract was higher than that of n-hexane extract. IC50 value for DPPH radical scavenging activity of ethanol extract of hull (CSE1) and embryo (CSE2) were 3.18 and 8.43 mg/mL, and those of total antioxidant activity were 19.96 and 11.28 mg AA eq/g, respectively. ACE inhibitory activity and $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitory activity on CSE1 showed the highest values of 31.61 and 45.17%, respectively. Antiproliferation effects on the MCF7, HepG2, H460, HCT-116, and PC3 cell line showed the highest values of 14.09, 19.12, 12.29, 9.78, and 9.12% in extract concentration of 5 mg/mL, respectively. These results suggested that citron seed can be used for development of functional food material which have biological activities.

We investigated the biological activities of extracts from the flowers of Angelica gigas Nakai. The $IC_{50}$ of the DPPH radical scavenging activity was 3,535 and 105.0 ${\mu}g/mL$ in the water and ethanol extracts, respectively, whereas it was 12.7 ${\mu}g/mL$ for ascorbic acid. The results showed that the total polyphenol content of the ethanol extracts (48.43${\pm}$0.18 mg/g) was higher than that of the water extracts (39.03${\pm}$0.69 mg/g). The flavonoid content of the ethanol extracts (67.02${\pm}$4.38 mg/g) was higher than that of the water extracts (50.32${\pm}$1.24 mg/g). The ethanol extract showed a 34.45% lower ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibition activity than that for acarbose. The ethanol extract showed a 23.62% lower ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibition activity compared with that for acarbose. The water extract showed 16.76% lower pancreatic lipase inhibition activity. Anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activity was also lower. These results suggest that the flower of Angelica gigas Nakai may be useful as an anti-oxidative agent.

Trafficking of viral glycoproteins to the cell surface results in syncytium formation in baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells infected with Newcastle disease virus (NDV). An extract from the medicinal Areca catechu L plant inhibited not only syncytium formation, but also trafficking of the hemagglutinin-neuramidase (HN) glycoprotein to the cell-surface. The viral glycoprotein was processed within the endoplasmic reticulum during transit to the cell membrane. Fungal extracts showed inhibitory activities ($IC_{50}10{\mu}g/mL$) against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase. These results suggested that A. catechu L. extracts inhibited the cell-surface expression of NDV-HN glycoprotein without significantly affecting HN glycoprotein synthesis in NDV-infected BHK cells.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the bifidogenic effect and a-glucosidase inhibitory effect of artificially cultured Phellinus linteus. The water extract of P. linteus promoted the growth of Bifidobacterium breve as well as the decrease of final pH in the media culturing intestinal bacteria. The growth of lactic acid bacteria inhibited effectively the bacterial enzymes, ${\beta}-glucosidase,\;{\beta}-glucuronidase$ and tryptophanase, of intestinal bactetria. The water extract of P. linteus inhibited maltase, sucrase and ${\alpha}-amylase$ of rat intestine.

To investigate the anti-diabetic activity of ethanol and aqueous peel and seed extracts obtained from three different grape species (Cambell Early, MBA, and Kyoho), alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity was examined. All extracts showed anti-diabetic activity, especially aqueous extract exhibited inhibitory effect above 70%. Thus, we used aqueous extract to check the potential hypoglycemic effects in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice model. The results showed that the blood glucose level of STZ-induced diabetic mice decreased drastically after 3 hr when the aqueous extract of Cambell Early seed was treated to the mice model. The aqueous extract of Kyoho seed lessened blood glucose level by 60%. Together, these data indicate that extracts of grape peel and seed (aqueous or ethanol) may have potential in improving hypoglycemic effects in the diabetic symptoms, suggesting that further investigation on biomarker expressions should be rewarding.

Hypoglycemic effect through activity inhibition of $\alpha$-glucosidase and $\alpha$-amylase was evaluated using leaves of Eleutherococcus senticosu, Eleutherococcus gracilistylus, Eleutherococcus sieboldianus and Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus which belong to Acanthopanax sessiliflorus genus. As a result of measuring $\alpha$-glucosidase activity inhibition, extract of Eleutherococcus gracilistylus showed around 43.38% of activity inhibition compared with acarbose and extract of Eleutherococcus senticosu showed 41.24% inhibitory effect. As a result of measuring $\alpha$-amylase activity inhibition, acarbose showed 73.25% of activity inhibition in 10 mg/mL concentration, and the extract of Eleutherococcus senticosu leaves showed 91.90% higher activity inhibition compared with acarbose. Also, after subjects in a model were induced diabetes with streptozotocin (STZ) intake plant extract from Acanthopanax sessiliflorus for 2 weeks, effect of improving blood glucose level and fat was examined. In all groups with specimen, Eleutherococcus senticosu (T1), Eleutherococcus gracilistylus (T2), Eleutherococcus sieboldianus (T3) and Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus (T4), blood glucose level was significantly decreased compared with that in control group (C). In an experiment of examining changes in fat concentration in blood, total cholesterol content increased in a control group compared with a normal, while in T1, T3 and T4, it decreased significantly compared with the control group. As for HDL-cholesterol, it significantly increased in all diabetes induced groups compared with the normal group, and in T3, it increased the most significantly by 55.61% compared with the control group. In case of LDL-cholesterol, specific difference between the normal group and the control group was not found; however, significant increase was detected in T2 and T3, whereas in T1 and T4, it decreased significantly compared with the control group. As for triglyceride, its concentration increased in the control group like total cholesterol. It decreased 60.16% in T3, 60.80% in T4 and 50.16% in T1 compared with the control group. As a result of measuring the concentration of triglyceride in extracted liver, the control group showed significant increase compared with the normal group, whereas T1 and T2 showed significant decrease compared with the normal group. The above results show that extracts from Acanthopanax sessiliflorus genus are effective for hypoglycemic and improving fat metabolism due to diabetes.
The biological activities of water extracts from different fruit parts, such as peel, flesh, and placenta, of oriental melon were investigated. The concentrations of total phenolic in fruit extracts were $816.37\;{\mu}g/ml$, $385.23\;{\mu}g/ml$, and $925.56\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Whereas the total flavonoid content in the peel extracts was $231.21\;{\mu}g/ml$, those in the extract of flesh and placenta were $8.16\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $36.07\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The DPPH free radical scavenging activity of each fruit extract at 10,000 ppm was 34.84% for peel, 10.70% for placenta and 9.26% flesh. The ABTS radical cation decolorizing activity of each fruit extract at 10,000 ppm was in fruit extracts were 72.92% for peel, 48.0% for flesh and 74.31% for placenta. In addition, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, ${\alpha}-Glucosidase$ inhibition activity, and tyrosinase inhibition activity of the peel extracts appeared to be higher than those of placenta and flesh. Taken together, these results indicated that the peel part of oriental melon contained higher level of total flavonoid content, and several physiological activities including antioxidation, ${\alpha}-Glucosidase$ inhibition activity, and tyrosinase inhibition activity than did the flesh and placenta parts, and suggested that the peel might have a potential to be applicable as a source for functional foods.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality characteristics and biological activities of Rosa multiflora Thunberg fruit extracts fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum based on fermentation period of 0, 24, 48, and 72 h. The study showed the pH of Rosa multiflora Thunberg fruit fermentation extracts have decreased as fermentation time increased, but the sugar content remained the same. The total acid content increased as the fermentation time increased. The viable cell count was at highest at 24 h (8.59 log CFU/mL) of fermentation, and the viable cell count decreased as the fermentation time increased. The total polyphenol content (14.85 mg GAE/g), total flavonoid content (6.74 mg RE/g), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity, ABTS+ radical scavenging activity, reducing power, α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activity were highest at 24 h of fermentation. Therefore, the study proved fermentation of Rosa multiflora Thunberg fruit with lactic acid increases physiological activity compared to nonfermented Rosa multiflora Thunberg fruit. Also the 24 h of fermentation had the highest activity, confirming the possibility of future use as a functional food material.

This study investigated the enzyme inhibitory effects of ethanol extracts from the different parts of rough rice (Oryza sativar L.) from its germination period. Rough rice was germinated at $37^{\circ}C$ for 6 days, then separated into hull+sprout and brown rice. ${\alpha}$-Glucosidase inhibitory activity had the highest value (39.38%) in hull+sprout extracts after 5 days of germination. ${\alpha}$-Amylase and DPP-4 inhibitory activity had the highest values (75.32% and 47.77%, respectively) in hull+sprout extracts after germination for 5 days. ACE inhibitory activity of hull+ sprout extracts increased from 43.16% at the beginning to 58.60% at 5 days, while brown rice extracts increased this activity from 0.88% at the beginning to 14.50% at 4 days. The xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of hull+ sprout extracts increased from 62.02% at the beginning to 64.49% at one day, and then decreased. Lipase inhibitory activity had its highest value (55.17%) in hull+sprout extracts after germination for 5 days. These results indicate that the optimal germination period for increasing enzyme inhibitory activities may be 5 days, and that hull+sprout extracts have a higher enzyme inhibition activity than brown rice.
