This study examined the effect of concentration polarization on permeate flux in forward osmosis (FO) membrane process for saline and sucrose solution. The reduction in permeate flux during the FO membrane process is largely due to the formation of concentration polarization on membrane surfaces. The flux reduction due to internal concentration polarization formed on the porous support layer was larger than that due to the external concentration polarization on the active membrane surface. Water permeate flux through the FO membrane increased nonlinearly with the increase in osmotic pressure. The water permeability coefficient was $1.8081{\times}10^{-7}m/s{\cdot}atm$ for draw solution on active layer (DS-AL) mode and $1.0957{\times}10^{-7}m/s{\cdot}atm$ for draw solution on support layer (DS-SL) mode in NaCl solution system. The corresponding membrane resistance was $5.5306{\times}10^6$ and $9.1266{\times}10^6s{\cdot}atm/m$, respectively. With respect to the sucrose solution, the permeate flux for DS-AL mode was 1.33~1.90 times higher than that for DS-SL mode. The corresponding variation in the permeation flux (J) due to osmotic pressure (${\pi}$) would be expressed as $J=-0.0177+0.4506{\pi}-0.0032{\pi}^2$ for the forward and $J=0.0948+0.3292{\pi}-0.0037{\pi}^2$ for the latter.

In this paper, the dual-mode burst-error-correcting decoding algorithm is adapted to the multiple trellis-coded .pi./4 shift QPSK in order to achieve the improvement of bit error rate (BER) performance over fading channels. The dual-mode adaptive decoder which combines maximum likelihood decoding with a burst detection scheme usually operates as a Viterbi decoder and switches to time diversity error recovery whenever an uncorrectable error pattern is identified. Rayleigh fading channels and Rician fading channels having the Rician parameter K=5dB are used in computer simulation, and the simulation results are compared with those of interleaving techniques. It is shown that under the constraint of the fixed overall memory quantity, the dual-mode adaptive decoding scheme gains an advantage in the BER performance with respect to interleaving strategies.

A novel current control technique with fast response and application in an unbalanced system is proposed in this paper. Contrary to the conventional PI and dead-beat current control techniques, the proposed method is adopted to the valley current mode control (VCMC) and average current mode control (ACMC) methods to overcome the phase delay caused by conventional methods. The advantages of the proposed system are simplicity of structure and ease of implementation. The VCMC and ACMC methods are established and applied to the buck converter, boost converter, three-phase PWM converter, and three-phase inverter. The control performances of the proposed systems are shown by computer simulations and verified by experimental results.
In this paper, we present the new PI-type VSC(variable structure control). In general, conventional VSCs with a discontinuous reaching law have a chattering problem, and with a PI-type reaching law have a slow reaching speed characteristic. To solve this problem, we propose the reaching law consists of a discontinuous and a PI-type reaching law to obtain a high speed reaching mode and a non-chattering characteristic at the same time. Simulation results show the effectiveness of a proposed scheme.
The most frequently suggested source for Pi2 pulsations in the inner magnetosphere (L < 4) is standing fast-mode waves trapped in the plasmasphere (i.e., plasmaspheric resonances). They have been considered as the source of low-latitude Pi2 pulsations. The plasmaspheric resonance model suggests that compressional fast-mode waves can be detected at all local times inside the plasmasphere provided reflection of the wave energy is efficient. Until now, however, there are no reports about compressional Pi2s observed in the dayside inner magnetosphere. That is, there is longitudinal limit of inner magnetosphere. In February 2008, THEMIS probes were near dawn and/or dusk sides, which are the transition regions between the nightside and dayside, in the inner magnetosphere (L = 2-4) when low-altitude Pi2s were identified at Bohyun (L = 1.35) station in Korea. Using the THEMIS electric field data, we examined if Pi2s are excited by longitudinally localized disturbances. We found that compressional Pi2s having high coherence with a low-latitude Pi2 pulsation occur on dawnside. However, any compressional pulsations in the Pi2 frequency band were not detected on duskside. This indicates that compressional Pi2s disappear near the duskside. Our observations are discussed with spatial plasmaspheric structure and possible Pi2 mechanisms.
In this study, we examined a morningside Pi2 pulsation, with a non-substorm signature, that occurred in very quiet geomagnetic conditions (Kp = 0) at 05:38 UT on December 8, 2012, using data obtained by Van Allen Probes A and B (VAP-A and VAP-B, respectively) and at a ground station. Using 1 sec resolution vector magnetic field data, we measured the X-component of the pulsation from the Abu Simbel ground station (L = 1.07, LT = UT +2 hr, where LT represents local time) in Egypt. At the time of the Pi2 event, Abu Simbel and VAP-A (L = 3.3) were in the morning sector (07:38 LT and 07:59 MLT, respectively, where MLT represents magnetic local time), and VAP-B was in the postmidnight sector (04:18 MLT and L = 5.7). VAP-A and VAP-B observed oscillations in the compressional magnetic field component (Bz), which were in close agreement with the X-component measurements of the Pi2 pulsation that were made at Abu Simbel. The oscillations observed by the satellites and on the ground were in phase. Thus, we concluded that the observed morningside Pi2 pulsation was caused by the cavity resonance mode rather than by ionospheric current systems.
The liquid crystal device with switchable dynamic mode and memory mode has been investigated and developed. The proposed device reveals splay, ${\pi}$ twist and bend states by selective switching among them. In the dynamic mode, this device is operated in the bend state which exhibits the wide view angle and fast response time properties due to the self-compensated bend structure and flow accelerated fast response time. In the memory mode, the permanent memory characteristics in the splay and ${\pi}$ twist sates are obtained, respectively. The switching mechanisms of the tristate device are also proposed.
The constant on-time current-mode controlled (COT-CMC) switching dc-dc converter is stable, with no subharmonic oscillation in its current loop when a voltage ripple in its outer voltage loop is ignored. However, when its output capacitance is small or its feedback gain is high, subharmonic oscillation may occur in a COT-CMC buck converter with a proportional-integral (PI) compensator. To investigate the subharmonic instability of COT-CMC buck converters with a PI compensator, an accurate reduced-order asynchronous-switching map model of a COT-CMC buck converter with a PI compensator is established. Based on this, the instability behaviors caused by output capacitance and feedback gain are investigated. Furthermore, an approximate instability condition is obtained and design-oriented stability boundaries in different circuit parameter spaces are yielded. The analysis results show that the instability of COT-CMC buck converters with a PI compensator is mainly affected by the output capacitance, output capacitor equivalent series resistance (ESR), feedback gain, current-sensing gain and constant on-time. The study results of this paper are helpful for the circuit parameter design of COT-CMC switching dc-dc converters. Experimental results are provided to verify the analysis results.
It is known that AC electric field to drive IPS mode of liquid crystal display (LCD) causes reduction of the contrast after long period of display operation. Our results are presented in this paper on a base of a model of interaction between surface of PI alignment film and LC molecules. We conclude that the surface viscosity of PI alignment film is one of the most important factors for the contrast reduction phenomenon.
Post emergence herbicidal activities$(pI_{50})$ of X-substituted phenylvinylsulfone derivatives(S) in-vivo against rice(Oryza sativa L.), Barnyard grass(Echinochloa crus-galli) and Pickerelweed(Monochoria vaginalis Presl) were measured by the pot test under paddy conditions. The (S) showed herbicidal symptom rapidly with lower activity(average $pI_{50}=2.0$) as proherbicide, which was excellent tolerance to rice. The structure activity relationships(SAR) were analyzed using such a physicochemical parameters as hydrophobic$({\pi})$ and molecular orbital(MO) quantity by the multiple regression technique, and discussed with quantum pharmacology. The herbicidal activities were related to the hydrophobic$({\pi})$ effect of X-substituent and orbital(HOMO & LUMO) energy. In case of Pickerelweed, the effect was rationalized by parabolic function of ${\pi}$ constant, where the optimal value of ${\pi}$ was 1.10. An increase in hydrophobicity and negative orbital energy by the electron attracting X-substituent may contribute to the herbicidal activity. Based on results proposed from SAR analysis, the mode of herbicidal action could be assumed.
