Flow characteristics of the wake behind a finite circular cylinder(FC) mounted on a flat plate was experimentally investigated. Three finite cylinder models having aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio, L/D) of 6,10 and 13 were tested in this study. Wake velocity was measured by a hot-wire anemometry at Reynolds number of 20,000, and the results were compared with those of two-dimensional circular cylinder. As a result, the free-end effect on the wake structure becomes more dominant with decreasing the aspect ratio(L/D) of the finite cylinder. Invisid flow entrained into the wake region decreases the turbulence intensity and periodicity of the vortex shedding due to existence of the free end. From spectral analysis and cross correlation of the velocity signals, vortices having 24Hz frequency characteristics are found in the down wash flow just behind the free end. There exists very complicated flow near the free end due to interaction between the entrained flow and streamwise vortices. Vortex formation region is destroyed significantly in the near wake and shows quite different wake structures from those of 2-D cylinder.

The near-wall flow structures of turbulent boundary layer over riblets having semi-circular grooves were investigated experimentally for the drag decreasing ($s^+=25.2$) and drag increasing ($s^+=40.6$) cases. The field of view used for tho velocity field measurement was $6.75{\times}6.75mm^2$ in physical dimension, containing two grooves. One thousand instantaneous velocity fields over the riblets were extracted for each case of drag increase and decrease. For comparison, five hundreds instantaneous velocity fields over a smooth flat plate were also obtained under the same flow conditions. To see the global flow structure qualitatively, the flow visualization was also performed using the synchronized smoke-wire technique. For the drag decreasing case ($s^+=25.2$), most of the streamwise vortices stay above the riblets, interacting with the riblet tips. The high-speed in-rush flow toward the riblet surface rarely influences the flow inside tho riblet valleys submerged in the viscous sublayer. The riblet tips seem to impede the spanwise movement of the longitudinal vortices and induce secondary vortices. The turbulent kinetic energy in the riblet valley is sufficiently small to compensate the increased wetted area of the riblets. In addition, in the logarithmic region, the turbulent kinetic energy are small or almost equal to that of a smooth flat plato. For the drag increasing case ($s^+=40.6$), however, the streamwise vortices move into the riblet valley freely, interacting directly with the riblet inner surface. The penetration of the high-speed in-rush flow on the riblets increases tho skin-friction. The turbulent kinetic energy is increased in the riblet valleys and even in the outer region compared to that over a flat plate.

The effect of periodic passing wake on the film-coolant flow issuing normally from a flat plate was investigated experimentally. The passing wake was generated by rotating thin circular bars. Depending on the rotational direction the test plate could be simulated as a pressure surface or a suction surface of a gas turbine blade. The phase-averaged velocity components were measured using an X-type hot-wire probe. The Reynolds number based on the free-stream velocity and injection hole diameter was 23, 500 and the velocity ratio which is the ratio of film coolant velocity to free-stream velocity was 0.5. The velocity-triangle induced by the wake was similar to that induced by the one generated at the blade trailing edge. The vertical velocity component induced by the passing wake, which approaches to the suction surface and moves away from the pressure surface, played a dominant role in the variation of the flow field. The variation in the phase-averaged velocity on the pressure surface was greater than on the suction surface, but the turbulence kinetic energy variation on the suction surface appeared larger than on the pressure surface.

The purpose of this study is augmentation of heat transfer without additional power in the case of rectangular air jet which impinges vertically on the heating surface. The experimental results are obtained heat transfer augmentation of a two-dimensional impinging jet using the surface roughness of transverse repeated-rib type. The integral average heat transfer coefficient of ribbed plate is about two times larger than that of flat plate. In order to supplement the information about the mechanism of heat transfer augmentation, the flow structure in the stagnation region is visually studied by using the smoke wire technique. The heat transfer augmentation is due to the effect of stretching of large scale vortex in the stagnation region.

In this study, we propose an approach for the design and satisfy the requirements of the fabrication of a small, lightweight, reliable, and stable ultra-wideband receiver for millimeter-wave bands and the contents of the approach. In this paper, we designed and fabricated a stable receiver with having low noise figure, flat gain characteristics, and low noise characteristics, suitable for millimeter-wave bands. The method uses the chip-and-wire process for the assembly and operation of a bare MMIC device. In order to compensate for the mismatch between the components used in the receiver, an amplifier, mixer, multiplier, and filter suitable for wideband frequency characteristics were designed and applied to the receiver. To improve the low frequency and narrow bandwidth of existing products, mathematical modeling of the wideband receiver was performed and based on this spurious signals generated from complex local oscillation signals were designed so as not to affect the RF path. In the ultra-wideband receiver, the gain was between 22.2 dB and 28.5 dB at Band A (input frequency, 18-26 GHz) with a flatness of approximately 6.3 dB, while the gain was between 21.9 dB and 26.0 dB at Band B (input frequency, 26-40 GHz) with a flatness of approximately 4.1 dB. The measured value of the noise figure at Band A was 7.92 dB and the maximum value of noise figure, measured at Band B was 8.58 dB. The leakage signal of the local oscillator (LO) was -97.3 dBm and -90 dBm at the 33 GHz and 44 GHz path, respectively. Measurement was made at the 15 GHz IF output of band A (LO, 33 GHz) and the suppression characteristic obtained through the measurement was approximately 30 dBc.

The heat transfer characteristics off swirling air jet impinging on a heated flat plate have been investigated experimentally. The main object is to enhance the heat transfer rate by increasing turbulence intensity of impinging jet with a specially designed swirl generator. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of swirling jet were measured using a hot-wire anemomety. The temperature distribution on the heated flat surface was measured with thermocouples. As a result the swirl effect on the local heat transfer rate on the impinging plate is confined mainly in the small nozzle-to-plate spacings such as L/D<3 at the stagnation region. For small nozzle-to-plate spacings, the local heat transfer in the stagnation region is enhanced from the increased turbulence intensity due to swirl motion, compared with the conventional axisymmetric impinging jet without swirl. For example, the local Nusselt number of swirling jet with swirl number Sw=0.75 and Sw=1 is about 9.7-76% higher than that of conventional impinging jet at the radial location of R/D=0.5. With the increase of the nozzle-to-plate distance, the stagnation heat transfer rate is decreased due to the diminishing axial momentum of the swirling jet. However, the swirling impinging jet for all nozzle-to-plate spacings tested in this study does not enhance the average heat transfer rate.

Experiments are carried out to investigate the effect of pulsations on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of an axisymmetric impinging jet on a flat plate heated by using a gold coated aim. Vertex motion in the impinging jet is visualized using a fog generator, and a thermochromatic liquid crystal (TLC) technique is used to measure the time averaged local temperature distributions on the impingement plate. In addition, the quantitative data for mean velocity and turbulence intensity are obtained employing hot-wire anemometer. Parameters such as pulsating frequency (f = 0, 10 and 20 Hz) and the nozzle-to-palate spacing (H/D = 2, 10) are considered at the jet Reynolds number of 20,000. Consequently, the significant changes of flow structure and local Nusselt number distribution due to pulsations are observed. In the case of H/D = 2, the enhanced heat transfer coefficient exceeding 30 % is observed at the stagnation point. At the high H/D, heat transfer rate increases with pulsation frequency.

Fluctuating wall pressures were measured using an array of 16 piezoelectric transducers beneath a turbulent boundary layer. The coating used in this experiment was an open-cell, urethane-type foam with a porosity of approximately 50 ppi. The ultimate objective of the coating is to provide a mechanical filter to reduce the wall pressure fluctuations. The boundary layer on the flat plate was measured by using a hot wire probe, and the CPM method was used to determine the skin friction coefficient. The wall pressure autospectra and streamwise wavenumber-frequency spectra were compared to assess the attenuation of the wall pressure field by the coating. The coating is shown to attenuate the convective wall pressure energy. However, the relatively rough surface of the coating in this investigation resulted in a higher mean wall shear stress, thicker boundary layer, and higher low-frequency wall pressure spectral levels compared to a smooth wall.

The flow around free end of a finite circular cylinder (FC) embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer has been investigated experimentally. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return type subsonic wind tunnel with varying aspect ratio of the finite cylinder mounted vertically on a flat plate. The wakes behind a 2-D cylinder and a finite cylinder located in a uniform flow were measured for comparison. Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was about Re=20,000. A hot-wire anemometer was employed to measure the wake velocity and the mean pressure distributions on the cylinder surface were also measured. The flow past the FC free end shows a complicated three-dimensional wake structure and flow phenomenon is quite different from that of 2-D cylinder. The three-dimensional flow structure was attributed to the downwashing counter rotating vortices separated from the FC free end. As the FC aspect ratio decreases, the vortex shedding frequency decreases and the vortex formation length increases compared to that of 2-D cylinder. Due to the descending counter-rotating twin-vortex, near the FC free end, regular vortex shedding from the cylinder is suppressed and the vortex formation region is hardly distinguished. Around the center of the wake, the mean velocity for the FC located in atmospheric boundary layer has large velocity deficit compared to that of uniform flow.

In recent days, the wire width of IC is narrowed and the degree of integration of IC is increased to obtain the higher capacity of the devices in electronic industry. And then the surface quality of FCCL(Flexible Copper Clad Laminate) became increasingly important. Surface defects on FCCL are bump, scratch, dent and so on. In particular, bumps cause low reliability of the products. Even though there are bumps on the surface, if leveling characteristic of plating solution is good, it does not develop significant bump. In this study, the leveling characteristics of additives are investigated. The objective of study is to improve the leveling characteristic and reduce the surface step through additives and plating conditions. The additives in the electrodeposition bath are critical to obtain flat surface and free of defects. In order to form flat copper surface, accelerator, suppressor and leveler are added to the stock solution. The reason for the addition of leveler is planarization surface and inhibition of the formation of micro-bump. Levelers (SO(Safranin O), MV(Methylene Violet), AB(Alcian Blue), JGB(Janus Green B), DB(Diazine Black) and PVP(Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone) are used in copper plating solution to enhance the morphology of electroplated copper. In this study, the nucleation and growth behavior of copper with variation of additives are studied. The leveling characteristics are analyzed on artificially fabricated Ni bumps.
