In order to obtain an imformation on the exchangeable potassium and it's activity ratio to other cations in wet paddy top soil grown by rice, soil samples were taken from bottomless middle size (60cm in dia, and height, respectively) round concrete pot being car ride out with an experiment on the split application of potassium in relation to lime and analysed. The pot experiment was being conducted from 1974 at a farm of the City University of Seoul and the wet soil samples were taken from the paddy in the year of 1976. The samples were extracted with $0.1N-AlCl_3$ solution and analysed regarding the elements. Results obtained are as follows : 1. Less exchangeable potassium was extracted from the soils limed than those unlimed when the same amount of potassium was applied immediatly after flooding. However, when the Potassium was applied two weeks after flooding, the reverse was observed. The fact that the exchangeable potassium is increased in the case that potassium fertilizer applied two weeks after flooding explained as due either to the prohibiting effect of iron or less abserption of potassium by the crop. 2. A remarkable decrease of exchangeable potassium of soils was observed during the vigorous growth stage of rice. 3. The activity ratio of $\frac{K}{(Fe^{{+}{+}}){\frac{1}{2}}}$ was remarkabley low after July 16th at which the soil was considerably reduced. 4. The activity ratio $\frac{K^+}{NH^+}$ of limed soil lasted highly until July 16th. It may be resulted from slow progress of ammonification caused by high pH. 5. A positive correlation was found between $Fe^{{+}{+}}$ and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ under reduced condition. But there was no correlation between $Fe^{{+}{+}}$ and $K^+$ or $NH^+_4$, because that the concentrations of $K^+$ and $NH^+_4$ in soil fluctuates during growing season.
This study was investigated to tile influences of clearcutting of timber harvesting on stream water quality at a natural deciduous forest catchment within the Seoul National University Research Forests in Mt. Baegun, Chunnam province during the periods of 1993 to 2001. Soil chemical ingredients and stream water qualities were monitored at 13 ha clearcutting site, non-treatment site and included in these catchment nearby. After the harvesting first and End years, the levels of total- N, and exchangeable ions ($K^+,\;Na^+,\;Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}$) were decreased the values of before harvesting, and after the harvesting 111th years and eighth years, respectively. But the chemical characteristics of soil were not changed at all. pH of water in the harvesting area was 6.5 in stream water. Among the nutrient, Cd, Pb, Cu, and phosphate were not found, and the level of BOD reached at the level of the domestic use for drinking. Turbidity, odor, taste, $NH_4\;^+-N,\;NO_3\;^--N$, standard plate count, and coliform were also low enough to be used as the domestic use for drinking in the near villagers. Total amount of cation, total amount of anion and total amount of ion in clearcutting site, non- treatment site and included in these catchment nearby were higher than clearcutting site and non- treatment site. But, there was no great difference.
In order to identify the effect of soil salinity on saturated hydraulic conductivity in reclaimed paddy soils, we established the soil columns uniformly packed with soils collected at every 20 cm up to 60 cm from the reclaimed paddy area with high and low salinity which has been cultivated rice plants for the last 30 years. The soil textures were sandy loam and loamy sand for high-salinity and low-salinity topsoils, respectively. For high-salinity and low-salinity soils the ECes were ranged from 25.2 to $37.8dS\;m^{-1}$ and 3.0 to $3.4dS\;m^{-1}$ while the ESPs were ranged from 7.70 to 20.84 % and from 5.12 to 11.33 %, respectively. The bulk densities of the soil columns were adjusted to $1.15{\pm}0.03g\;cm^{-3}$. The results of the soil column experiments shows that the stabilized saturated hydraulic conductivity of low-salinity soil was $0.62cm\;hr^{-1}$ at the topsoil while there were little water flow at the bottom of the soil columns packed with high-salinity soils. After removal of $Na^+$ ions with $1N\;NH_4OAc$ from the high-salinity soil, Ksat of the saline soil was drastically increased to $0.23cm\;hr^{-1}$. Soil columns of high-salinity topsoil treated with four different concentration of NaCl influent after removal of soluble and exchangeable cations with $1N\;NH_4OAc$ show Ksat in the range of $0.1{\sim}0.15cm\;hr^{-1}$ and the Ksat slightly decreased as the concentration of NaCl influent was increasing. Conclusively, we could assume that $Na^+$ can be significantly contributed to the saturated hydraulic conductivity in newly reclaimed sandy soil.

This study was conducted to compare filtering abilities of three species of freshwater mussels (Cobicula fluminea, Corbicula leana and Unio douglasiae) and to evaluate their filter feeding effects on water quality change in experimental enclosure systems. Mussel feeding in both laboratory and enclosure resulted in decrease of particulate material, such as chlorophyll, total P, SS. In the treatment with 600 individuals of mussels, chllorophyll concentration and net primary productivity decreased from $87.3{\pm}4.5\;{\mu}g/L$ and $106.3{\pm}8.8\;{\mu}gC\;L^{-1}\;hr^{-1}$ to nearly the same level as the mussel-free enclosure ($25.0{\pm}0.5\;{\mu}g/L$ and $15.6{\pm}13.3\;{\mu}gC\;L^{-1}\;hr^{-1}$, respectively)(P< 0.05, n = 6, ANOVA). In concert with the decrease of chlorophyll concentration, not only was the transparency enhanced from 0.48 m to 1.2m but also the suspended solids and total phosphorus decreased from $22.0{\pm}1.0\;mg/L$ to $7.5{\pm}0.5\;mg/L$ and $133{\pm}0.8\;{\mu}g/L$ to $70{\pm}0.0\;{\mu}g/L$, respectively (P<0.001, $r^2$>0.71, n = 11). Although slight decrease of SRP concentration and the increase of inorganic nitrogen ($NH_3-N$ and $NO_2-N$) were observed in the mussel addition enclosure, there was no statistical difference between two enclosures. Based on the filtering rate on phytoplankton and nutrient release rate in forms of feces and pseudofeces, Corbicula leana appeared to be the most efficient filter-feeder among three mussel species. These results inidicate that Cobicula play an important role in controlling particulate sestons and thus it could be applied as a biocontroler for the water quality management in lakes and reservoirs with algal blooms.

In the present study, UHF (320 MHz) in combination with RF (13.56 MHz) plasmas was used for the synthesis of hydrogenated silicon nitride (SiNx:H) films by PECVD process at low temperature. RF/UHF hybrid plasmas were maintained at a fixed pressure of 410 mTorr in the N2/SiH4 and N2/SiH4/NH3 atmospheres. To investigate the radical generation and plasma formation and their control for the growth of the film, plasma diagnostic tools like vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (VUVAS), optical emission spectroscopy (OES), and RF compensated Langmuir probe (LP) were utilized. Utilization of RF/UHF hybrid plasmas enables very high plasma densities ~ 1011 cm-3 with low electron temperature. Measurements using VUVAS reveal the UHF source is quite effective in the dissociation of the N2 gas to generate more active atomic N. It results in the enhancement of the Si-N bond concentration in the film. Consequently, the deposition rate has been significantly improved up to 2nm/s for the high rate synthesis of highly transparent (up to 90 %) SiNx:H film. The films properties such as optical transmittance and chemical composition are investigated using different analysis tools.
In this study, simulation results of nitrogen and phosphorus removals and microbial activities for an $A_2O$ process in wastewater treatment plant are presented by using Activated Sludge Models (ASMs). Simulations were performed using pre-calibrated model and layout implemented in GPS-X simulation software. The models were used to investigate variations of SRT, water temperature, DO and C/N ratio effect on nutrients removal and microbial activity. According to the simulated results, the successful nitrification required SRT higher than 10.3 days, whereas increase of $NO_3$-N loading in the anaerobic reactor caused phosphorus release by PAOs; the effluent $NH_4$-N showed rapid change between $12^{\circ}C$(21.7 mg/L) and $13^{\circ}C$(3.2 mg/L); the effluent phosphorus was increased up to 1.9 mg/L at water temperature of $25^{\circ}C$; the DO increase was positive for heterotrophs and autotrophs growths but negative for PAOs growth; the PAOs showed low activity when C/N ratio was lower than 2.5. The experimental results indicated that the calibrated models can assure the prediction quality of the ASMs and can be used to optimize the $A_2O$ process.

This study was focused on improving nitrification efficiencies of M-dephanox (Modified-Dephanox) process. Rotating biological contactor (RBC) was used instead of floating sponge type media in nitrification reactor. High ammonia removal efficiencies were observed in nitrification reactor, regardless of organic loading from contactor of M-dephanox process. Denitrification efficiencies were also increased to maintain low $NO_3-N$ concentration in effluent. This enhanced phosphate release in anaerobic contactor and resulted in high removal efficiencies of phophorus. Average removal efficiencies of $TCOD_{Cr}$ and $SCOD_{Cr}$ were 93.8% and 81.6%, respectively, while those of TKN and ${NH_4}^+-N$ were 80.9% and 74.4%, respectively. As for phosphorous treatment, the average removal efficiencies of TP and OP were 94.7% and 94.3%, respectively. Also, effect of operating temperature on nitrogen removal was examined. Average removal efficiency of TN was 65.8 % at $15^{\circ}C$ or below (at average temperature of $13.3^{\circ}C$), while that was 82.8% at $15^{\circ}C$ or above (at average temperature of $21.9^{\circ}C$).
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of germanium biotite (GB) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fecal gas emission in pigs. In Exp 1., a total of one hundred nursery pigs (initial body weight 13.12${\pm}$0.15kg) were used in a 21 d growth assay. The five treatments were control (CON, basal diet), GB0.5-200 (basal diet + 0.5% GB, 200mesh), GB1.0-200 (basal diet + 1.0% GB, 200mesh), GB0.5-325 (basal diet + 0.5% GB, 325mesh), GB1.0-325 (basal diet + 1.0% GB, 325mesh). Each treatment had four replicates with five pigs per replicate. ADG, ADFI and gain/feed were not significantly different among the treatments. Fecal NH3-N concentration of pigs fed the GB325 diet was lower than that of pigs fed the GB200 diet (P=0.01). The GB treatments reduced fecal volatile fatty acids significantly compared to the CON (propionic acid, P=0.01; butyric acid, P=0.01; acetic acid, P=0.02). Especially, fecal propionic acid concentration of pigs fed the GB325 diets was lower than that of pigs fed the GB200 diets (P=0.02). In Exp 2., a total of seventy five pigs (initial body weight 21.18${\pm}$0.15kg) were used in a 28 d growth assay. The treatments were same as described for Exp. 1. Each treatment had five replicates with three pigs per replicate. The GB1.0 treatments significantly increased the ADG compared to the GB0.5 treatments (P=0.03). The DM and N digestibility of pigs fed the GB1.0 diets were higher than that for pigs fed the GB0.5 diets (P=0.01). Also, the Ca digestibility of pigs fed the GB diets was higher than that for pigs fed the CON diets (P=0.01). The fecal NH3-N concentrations for the GB treatments were lower than that for the CON (P=0.01). The GB325 treatments significantly decreased the fecal NH3-N concentration compared to the GB200 treatments (P=0.03). The fecal butyric acid concentration for the GB325 treatments was lower than that for the GB200 treatment (P=0.04). In conclusion, the results obtained from these feeding trials suggest that the dietary GB for nursery pigs affects fecal noxious gas emission. In growing pigs, dietary GB was effective to improve ADG and decrease fecal noxious gas emission.

The purpose of this research was evaluated economical effect to apply alternative external carbon source. Conventional activated sludge process in municipal wastewater treatment plant was adapted and introduced to Biological nutrient removal processes to meet the newly enforced effluent quality standard for nutrient removal in Korea. Low $COD/NH_4^+-N$ ratio and higher nutrient concentration of influent characteristics force to inject external carbon source for denitrifying recycled nitrate. In the most case, methanol was used as external carbon source. But Methanol is expensive and very dangerous in handling. So we could find cheaper and safer external carbon source substituted methanol in last study. This alternative external carbon source is named RCS(recoverd carbon source) and a by-product of fine chemical product at chemical plant. When RCS was applied real municipal wastewater treatment plant, average $55\~65\%$ of T-N removal efficiency, 8.8mg/l of effluent T-N concentration, 11.3mg/l of effleunt COD concentration were obtained without effluent COD increase as against used methanol. To apply RCS in municipal wastewater treatment plant obtain approximately $\74.5%$ expenditure cost reduction in comparison with methanol dosage cost.

Sodium lactateand sodium citrate, traditional food preservatives, were added to extend the shelf-life of the loow-salted Myungran-jeot, and various chemical and microbiological analyses were carried out with Muungran-jeot, and various chemical and microbiological analyses were carried out with Myungran-jeot femented at 1$0^{\circ}C$. pH was decreased in the beginning stage of fermentation and then increased, whereas the content of lactic acid was increased during fermentation. But, lactic acid production of the low-salted Myungran-jeot with preservative were lower than control. The NH$_2$-N content of the low-salted Myungran-jot with sodium citrate was increased in the beginning of fermentation and then decreased. Sodium citrate inhibited the productions of VBN and TMA during the fermentation of Myungran-jeot, whereas sodium lactate inhibited the productions of VBN and TBA. Sodium lactate inhibited the growths of proteolytic bacteris and fungi. The estimated shelf-lives of the Myungran-jeot with control, sodium lactate, and sodium citrate were about 11, 13, and 13 days, respectively.
