Objective I would like to identify when 'If the wind damage people, they feel aversion to wind. If the cold damage people, they feel aversion to cold.(傷風則惡風 傷寒則惡寒)' has appeared and what does this hypothesis have affected. I also researched future scholars' opinions and their criticism on this hypothesis. Methods: 1. Among the books which are related to Cold damage according to the age, books which have original text that has a relationship with this hypothesis were elected. Total of 30 books were elected, and their original text was extracted and analyzed. Results 1. This hypothesis appeared first on Hwalinseo(活人書) in the Song Dynasty, and had lots of impact on future generations. 2. After passing Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasty, there were some opinions appeared which criticized part of this hypothesis. Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) also tried to correct this hypothesis. 3. Bang Yu-Jip(方有執) of Ming Dynasty straightly opposed this hypothesis on Sanghanronjobyeon(傷寒論條辨)for the first time. It had huge influence in the Qing Dynasty and lots of scholars suggested that this hypothesis lacks persuasion. 4. Just like Qing Dynasty, this hypothesis is not accepted in the books of modern ages. Conclusion This hypothesis appeared in the Song Dynasty for the first time and had lots of influence, but some counter arguments had appeared as time passed, and during Qing Dynasty, this hypothesis lost its creditibility with lots of criticism.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is the process by which epithelial cells lose their characters and acquire the properties of mesenchymal cells. EMT has been reported to exert an essential role in embryonic development. Recently, EMT has emerged as a pivotal mechanism in the metastasis of cancer and the fibrosis of chronic diseases. In particular, EMT is drawing attention as a mechanism of renal fibrosis in chronic kidney diseases such as diabetic nephropathy. In this study, we developed an EMT model by treating TGF-β1 on the podocytes, which play a key role in the renal glomerular filtration. This study explored the effects of Hwanggeum-tang (HGT) recorded in Dongeuibogam as being able to be used for the treatment of Sogal whose concept had been applied to Diabetes Mellitus (DM), on the TGF-β1-induced podocyte EMT. HGT suppressed the expression of vimentin and α-SMA, the EMT marker, in the human podocytes stimulated by TGF-β1. However, HGT increased the expression of ZO-1 and nephrin. Interestingly, HGT selectively inhibited the mTOR pathway rather than the classical Smad pathway. HGT also activated the AMPK signaling. HGT's inhibitory effect on the podocyte EMT through regulation of the mTOR pathway was achieved through the activation of AMPK, which was confirmed by comparison with cells treated with compound C (CC), an inhibitor of AMPK signaling. In conclusion, HGT can be applied to the renal fibrosis by preventing TGF-β1-induced EMT of podocytes through AMPK activation and mTOR inhibition.
Through investigation on prescriptions from Dongeuibogam with Radix Puerariae as an ingredient, the following conclusions were reached. The 59 prescriptions with Radix Puerariae as an ingredient are mentioned from chapter of Pediatrics to chapter of Intestinal Convulsions. And 85% of those appears from chapter of Pediatrics to chapter of coughs. Prescriptions with Radix Puerariae as the main ingredient are used for skin diseases, cold, epidemics, abscess, diabetes, stroke, feverish diseases, intestinal diseases, weakness and cough. The dosage of Radix Puerariae varies from 0.875g to 11.25g. 3.75g was the most frequently used dosage which accounts 44%. And those with small dosage of 0.875 to 1.125g were for use on infants or pregnant women. The grounding pathology used for prescriptions with Radix Puerariae as an ingredient appeared to be mostly the pathology related to the Six External Qi. Among this, wind with cold(風寒), wind, cold with heat and humidity(風寒署濕), catching cold(傷寒), successively catching cold(兩感傷寒), cold of the Yangmyung and heat clogging(陽明傷寒火鬱), abnormal weather(時令不正) are the majority. Through the prescriptions with Radix Puerariae as an ingredient, it could be concluded Radix Puerariae that has various functions such as sweating and removing rash(發表透疹), exhalation and curing muscular ache(發散解肌), producing body fluid and ceasing thirst(生津止渴), opening abscess and healing the scar(托瘡生肌), removal of fever(解熱), resolving hangover(醒酒). Seungmagalguntang(升麻葛根湯) is used as the base prescription the most, and various prescriptions and herbs are combined according to the case.

Objective : In this study, we compared the antioxidant and anticancer properties of four multi-herbal formulas which were recorded in 'Dongeuibogam': Gilgyung-tang (GGT), Mokdanpi-tang (MDPT), Samso-eum (SSE), Samchulbobi-tang (SCBBT). Methods : We checked antioxidant properties of four multi-herbal formula through total phenolic content, radical scavenging activities, protective effects on genomic DNA oxidation. To investigate anticancer effects, we conducted MTT assay and analyzed morphologic change in A549 non-small lung cancer cells. Results : Total phenolic contents of four multi-herbal formulas were in a rich order of MDPT > SSE > GGT > SCBBT. Especially, MDPT revealed the highest activity than others in all antioxidant experiments. Our results indicated that treatment of those multi-herbal formulas induced growth retardation in A549 cells and MDPT also showed the highest anticancer effect ($IC_{50}=1.374mg/ml$) among them. Conclusions : Our data suggested that MDPT would be a powerful ingredient for lung cancer treatment.
Bodongbiyo is an old medical book, which can be traced by its texts quoted in the pediatric part of Euibangryuchui. A notable fact is that its record does not remain in China, and relevant records are found only in Korea. The book is believed to have been widely used until the early Chosun Dynasty. The present study purposed to examine how records on Bodongbiyo have been handed down until today and to answer questions on the author of the book through investigating the quoted texts. In addition, we tried to get a glimpse of early pediatrics remaining in the book. From this study were drawn conclusions as follows. A. The oldest record about Bodongbiyo is found in the history of King Taejong in Joseonwangjosilrok, and its contents remain in the form of quotations in Hyangyakjipseongbang and Euibangryuchui. The fact that there are several records on Bodongbiyo, which cannot be traced in Chinese literature, means that the categories of medicine were so extensive in those days. Moreover, this proves the existence of pediatrics as a special medical area in the early Chosun Dynasty. B. Bodongbiyo is known to have been written by Yoo Wan-so, but there are some questions and, in fact, its contents including the theory of fever are contradictory to Yoo Wan-so's medical theory. A number of books that have been published recently in China under the title Bodongbiyo contain the original commentaries of Euibangryuchui and the contents of Yoo Wan-so's other books. They are likely to throw confusion into future researches. C. Bodongbiyo is believed to have been read widely in the Koryo Dynasty and the early Chosun Dynasty. Through examining its texts, we found that the book takes a different course from Soayakjeungjikgyeol. This provides a lead to the understanding of pediatrics in the early Chosun as well as to further research on pediatrics in the mid Chosun Dynasty represented by Dongeuibogam.

Background : Saam acupuncture were composed by applying the elemental concepts from the Five Phase theory - the relationships between the cycles such as Saeng(Sheng, 'nourishing' or 'creating') and Geuk(Ke, 'suppressing' or 'controlling') - onto the Five Phase points and 12 channels to compensate for the imbalance in each of the 12 main energy traits. Objective : The present study is aimed to find out the characteristics of Five Phase points pattern in Saam acupuncture. Methods : We analysed the characteristics of five elements of the Five Phase points in Korean medical texts such as Saamdoinchimguyogyeol, Dongeuibogam and Chimgugyeongheombang in mid Chosun Dynasty. Using non-negative factorization(NNMF) methods, we extracted the feature matrix of five elements of Five Phase points in each classic medical text. Results : In Saam acupuncture, two characteristics were most prominent: (1) "Self" component of Five elements, (2) "Mother" and "Grandmother" component of Five elements. Conclusions : Saam acupuncture used the combination of Five-Shu acupoint based on ZangFu pattern identification. Our findings suggest that grasping the characteristics of Five Phase points combinations can improve the understanding the selection of the relevant acupoints based on the ZangFu pattern identifications.
Objectives : The aim of this paper is finding the combinations of the medicinal herbs that are used frequently by analyzing the details of the herbal medicinal prescriptions used by the patients who were diagnosed with M54 code diseases. In addition, I will seek to assess the demonstrative pattern that frequently manifest in the M54 code disease patients by using the combinations of the medicinal herbs that are used frequently. Methods : After having extracted the prescription administered to the patients with the diagnostic code of M54, find the relevance with the demonstrative pattern by analyzing the combination for each of the medicinal herb effectiveness. Use the list of medicinal herbs utilized in the corresponding prescription to examine the most frequent combination of the medicinal herbs through the generation of up to 25 arbitrary combinations of the medicinal herbs. Results & Conclusions : As the results of the analysis of the details of the use of the prescribed herbal medicine packages by the Korean Medicine Hospital of Pusan National University, regarding the back pain of the diagnostic code M54, the prescriptions that corresponded to the kidney deficiency pattern, static blood pattern, wind pattern, dampness pattern, food accumulation pattern, qi depression pattern and phlegm-retained fluid pattern back pain among the back pain classifications under the Dongeuibogam (東醫寶鑑) were used frequently, and, regarding the Nape Pain, prescriptions that corresponded to the pain arising from the wind-dampness and phlegm the 'Taeyang meridian' was most frequent.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to improve the fomula efficiency and prevent the resource abuse by clarifying the origin of kinds of Cinnamomum cassia Presl. Methods : 1. We researched "Shennongbencaojing", "Bencaogangmu", "Shanghanlun", "Jinguiyaolue", "Dongeuibogam", and other books. 2. Choosing a related words such as Cinnamomi ramulus(Gye-ji), Cassiae Cortex Interior(Gye-sim), Cinamomi Cortex(Yuk-gye). 3. Searching prescriptions: We searched prescriptions containing the Cinnamon in above books, and compared the differency among them. Conclusions : 1. Cinnamomi ramulus(Gye-ji) used for Shanghanlun contains Cinamomi Cortex(Yuk-gye), Cinnamomi ramulus(Gye-ji) and Cassiae Cortex Interior(Gye-sim) written in the Korean Pharmacopoeia. 2. Cinamomi Cortex(Yuk-gye) is the thick cortex of trunk of Cinnamomum cassia. It has functions like downwarding and warming-tonifying, and it is mainly used for Palmi-won(Bawei-yuan). 3. Cassiae Cortex Interior(Gye-sim) is about 30% of Cinamomi Cortex(Yuk-gye) middle layer, removing outer and inner cortex. Its main functions are regulating heart, coordinating the heart and kidney, and dispelling stastic blood and it is mainly used for Gyejibokryoung-hwan(Guizhifuling-wan) and Dangguisoo-san(Dangguixu-san). 4. Current Cinnamomi ramulus(Gye-ji) is a twig. thus, it means a small branch. Its main functions are upwarding, transversing, and exterior-effusing and it is mainly used for Gyeji-tang(Guizhijiagui-tang) and Gyejigagye-tang(Guizhi-tang).
Objectives & methods : This study aimed to investigate and compare the traditional acupuncture treatment and Sa-am acupuncture treatment of stroke. We investigated ${\ll}$Sa-am chimgujeongjeon(舍岩鍼灸正傳)${\gg}$ for Sa-am acupuncture treatment, and ${\ll}$Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)${\gg}$ and ${\ll}$Chimgudaesung (鍼灸大成)${\gg}$ for traditional acupuncture treatment. Results & Conclusion : 1. In the traditional acupuncture treatment, acupoints on CV, GV, GB, LI, ST meridians to remove pathogens such as fire, damp, phlegm, blood stagnation and Ashi points (nearby points) are often used rather than acupoints according to the diagnosis of excess & deficiency in organs and meridians. 2. In ${\ll}$Sa-am chimgujungjeon(舍岩鍼灸正傳)${\gg}$, symptoms of stroke are classified into 21 and each symptoms are analyzed according to the diagnosis of excess & deficiency of organs and meridians, consequently treated using tonification & sedation of corresponding meridians. 3. For the treatment of stroke in ${\ll}$Sa-am chimgujungjeon(舍岩鍼灸正傳)${\gg}$, tonification & sedation of the acupoints on related meridian is often omitted, using only the acupoints on targeted meridian. 4. In ${\ll}$Sa-am chimgujungjeon(舍岩鍼灸正傳)${\gg}$, empirical points are preferably used for the treatment of stroke.

The theory of "eccentric diseases are generally due to phlegm (怪病多屬痰)" means that phlegm is a major cause for intractable diseases including cerebrovascular accident, depression, insanity, and shock from strange things or evil sprint. It has been a key foundation for the diagnosis and treatment of phlegm in traditional Korean medicine. However, the origin of the theory is not clear and controversial. In this study, we critically reviewed the origin and developing process of the theory in the viewpoints of philology and pathology in Korean medicine. Wang Yin-Jun (王隱 君) did not claim that eccentric diseases are generally due to phlegm in Taidingyangshengzhu-lun (泰定養生主論). The miscitation by following medical literature caused the misunderstanding in the meaning of Taidingyangshengzhu-lun, that phlegm can cause variable symptoms and signs. In the Ming dynasty, some poor medical doctors had tended to diagnose any difficult case as phlegm syndrome and to use Kuntan-huan (滾痰丸) as a standard herbal formula for treating phlegm syndrome. However, the tendency to categorize delicate cases easily to phlegm syndrome is not desirable. Besides, the tendency to use Kuntan-huan as a basic formula for the phlegm syndrome might cause diverse and severe adverse effects. Thus, we cannot accept the theory of eccentric diseases is generally due to phlegm without a doubt. In conclusion, this theory might be a valuable aphorism in terms of considering the possibility of the secondary pathologic factors including phlegm and blood stasis which should be considered first in case of intractable diseases.
