An effective scale-up methodology of fluidized bed incinerators for low calorific value industrial wastes such as paper sludge and sewage sludge has been developed based on the similarity rules. Conventional scale-up theories are briefly reviewed and a new simple theory defining the diffusion Fourier number is established taking account of the lateral mixing of fuels in the fluidized bed. From the design and the operating conditions of the pilot FBC plant at Inchon, important design data for the full-scale incinerators are calculated and discussed.

The stabilization characteristics of diffusion flame formed behind a bluff body with fuel injection slits was experimentally investigated by varying main fuel injection angles and auxiliary fuel injection conditions. The flame stability limits, temperature and length of recirculation zone, direct and schlieren photographs of flames were measured in order to study the stabilization mechanism of the diffusion flame. The results of this investigation are as follows. The stability limits can be improved by the condition of the kind and quanity of the injected auxiliary fuel. The length and temperature decrease with injection of auxiliary fuel, and these phenomena are remarkable when LPG is injected into the recirculation zone. When the LPG is injected into the recirculation zone, flame remains sooty. Fluctuation of fuel and main stream is generated actively by air injection.

This study is to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer of a horizontal tube, with radial fins of various configuration, immersed in a high temperature fluidized bed. The experimental heat transfer variation is compared with that of a smooth tube. The finned tubes and smooth tube, with outside and inside diameter of 48.6mm and 30.6mm, are made of steel tubes. The depth of the fin is 5mm, the rake angles of fin are $25^{\circ},\;35^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$ and the widthes of fin for each rake angle are 0mm, 1mm, 2mm and 3mm. A bed temperature is fixed at $880\;{\pm}\;10^{\circ}C$. A granular refractory(silica sand) is used as a bed material with mean particle diameters of 1.22mm and 1.54mm. The maximum heat transfer coefficient is achieved with the rake angle of $25^{\circ}$ and the width of 0mm for the mean particle size 1.22mm. The coefficient is 2.14 times larger than that for a smooth tube. The rake angle for the maximum heat transfer coefficient depends on the particle size of bed material. Also the transfer coefficient decreases as the width of fin increases.

An equilibrium analysis was carried out to determine principal species in the incineration of hazardous waste, which was assumed as a compound of hydrocarbon fuel, chlorine, sulfur, and heavy metals, and their behaviors with variation of temperature, chlorine and sulfur concentrations. Calculated results showed that the most important parameter influencing the principal species was temperature. Chlorine concentration affected on mole fractions of the species, especially at high temperature. Existence of sulfur had a significant effect on the species at low temperature, regardless of surfur concentration. Generally, principal species at high temperature were chlorides and oxides, while the principal species at low temperature were sulfides. As temperature increased, mole fractions of the principal species increased at low temperature, however, mole fractions of some metal species decreased at high temperature.

Effects of ambient geometry on the liftoff characteristics are experimentally studied for nonpremixed turbulent jet flames. To clarify the inconsistency of the nozzle diameter effect on the liftoff height, the ambiences of finite and infinite domains are studied. For nonpremixed turbulent jet issuing from a straight nozzle to infinite domain, flame liftoff height increases linearly with nozzle exit mean velocity and is independent of nozzle diameter. With the circular plate installed on the upstream of nozzle exit, flame liftoff height is lower with plate at jet exit than without, but flame liftoff characteristics are similar to the case of infinite domain. For the confined jet having axisymmetric wall boundary, the ratio of the liftoff height and nozzle diameter is proportional to the nozzle exit mean velocity demonstrating the effect of the nozzle diameter on the liftoff height. The liftoff height increases with decreasing outer axisymmetric wall diameter. At blowout conditions, the blowout velocity decreases with decreasing outer axisymmetric wall diameter and liftoff heights at blowout are approximately 50 times of nozzle diameter.

An experimental investigation has been made with the objective of studying the limits of equivalence ratio on mixing enhancement in a tone excited jet flame. The jet is pulsed by means of a loudspeaker-driven cavity and rich flames(${\phi}>1.5$) are used. The excitation frequency is chosen for the resonant frequency identified as a pipe resonance due to acoustic excitation. Methane, propane and butane are used to examine the effect of mixture property on the limit of equivalence ratio. Mixing is always enhanced in a methane/air flame as the excitation intensity increases. Constant lower limits of equivalence ratio for mixing enhancement are present in cases of propane/air and butane/air flames irrespective of mean mixture velocities. The equivalence ratio limits are also found to be related to the flame instability ; the lower Le, the higher the limit of equivalence ratio. Under the equivalence ratio limits, cellular flames are generated as the excitation intensity increases. The amplitude of oscillating velocity for generating a cellular flame in the equivalence ratio limit is proportional to a mean mixture velocity irrespective of fuels.

The atomizing characteristics in a spray injected from a twin fluid atomization nozzle have been investigated. The Sauter mean diameters as mean diameter are compared with wavelength calculated from the instability theory. The Sauter mean diameter are measured by the Fraunhofer diffraction theory using the Malvern particle sizer. The wavelength is calculated using the mean relative velocity instead of the exit relative velocity of nozzle. Also shadowgraphy technique is used to visualize atomization phenomena. This paper gives a possibility that the mean diameter can be predicted with the wavelength obtained by the simple instability theory.

Flame propagation in a four-valve spark-ignition optical engine was visualized under lean-bum conditions with A/F=18 at 2000rpm. The early flame development in a four-valve pentroof-chamber single-cylinder engine was examined with imaging of the laser-induced Mie scattered light using an image-intensified CCD camera. Flame profiles along the line-of-sight were also visualized through a quartz piston window. Two-dimensional flame structures were visualized with a Proxitronic HF-1 fast motion camera system by Mie scattering from titanium dioxide particles along a planar laser sheet generated by a copper vapor laser. The flame propagation images were subsequently analysed with an image processing programme to obtain information about the flame structure under different tumble flow conditions generated by sleeved and non-sleeved intake ports. This allowed enhancement of the flame images and calculation of the enflamed area, and the displacement of its center, as a function of the tumble flow induced by the pentroof-chamber in the vicinity of spark plug. Image processing of the early flame development quantified the correlation between flame and flow characteristics near the spark plug at the time of ignition which has been known to be one of the most important factors in cyclic combustion variations in lean-burn engines. The results were also compared with direct flame images obtained from the natural flame luminosity of the lean mixture.

Laser induced incandescence, LII, recently developed technique for measuring soot concentration in flames, can overcome most of limitations of conventional laser extinction measurement. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the effect of laser intensity, detection wavelength, and also laser beam quality on both LII signal at a particular position and peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio. The results of LII signal with increasing laser intensity shows its near-independence of laser intensity once threshold level of laser intensity has been reached. However, this near-independence depends on laser beam quality and the incident optical setup. The peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio slowly but continuously increases with laser power. This fact is due to the dependence of LII signal on particle mean diameter. LII signal is attenuated during it passes through the flame containing soot particles. The attenuation rate is inversely proportional to detection wavelength. In this study, LII signal at 680 nm band is 10% greater than the signal at 400 nm band.

A numerical study is carried out to examine the ignition and propagation process of detonation wave in SCRam-accelerator operating in superdetonative mode. The time accurate solution of Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations for chemically reacting flow is obtained by using the fully implicit numerical method and the higher order upwind scheme. As a result, it is clarified that the ignition process has its origin to the hot temperature region caused by shock-boundary layer interaction at the shoulder of projectile. After the ignition, the oblique detonation wave is generated and propagates toward the inlet while constructing complex shock-shock interaction and shock-boundary layer interaction. Finally, a standing oblique detonation wave is formed at the conical ramp.
