In this study, the Coanda effect inducing bump was applied to improve the film cooling effectiveness on the flat plate with $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ angled rectangular slots. The slot length to width ratio was 6. A cylindrical cap shaped structure, called Coanda bump, was installed at the exit of the slot to generate Coanda effect. The width and height of the bump was 10.5 mm and 1 mm, respectively. The film cooling effectiveness was measured at the fixed blowing ratio, M=2.0, using pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technique. The mainstream velocity was 10 m/s and the turbulence intensity was about 0.5%. Results showed that the film cooling effectiveness for case of $30^{\circ}$ angled slot was higher than that of $45^{\circ}$ angled slot. It was found that there was no positive effect of Coanda effect on the overall averaged film cooling effectiveness for the $30^{\circ}$ angled slot. On the other hand, for the $45^{\circ}$ angled slot, the film cooling effectiveness was improved with the installation of the Coanda bump.

The accurate prediction of leakage flow through the brush element of brush seal at the steam turbine is important to find optimum design parameters for increasing an efficiency. In this study, CFD analysis method using commercial software FLUENT is proposed to predict leakage through the brush element. Since the brush element has a complex three-dimensional shape with many bristle assemblies, it is difficult to analyze the flow field. Therefore, if the brush element is assumed to be porous medium region, the analysis time can be shortened. Two determination methods of resistance coefficients of the Darcian porous medium equation are suggested. By comparing the 2D and 3D CFD analysis results for the leakage of the brush element using the two resistance coefficient determination methods, the effectiveness of the analysis for the porous medium assumption is proved.

Prediction of performance and operating characteristics of a state-of-the-art ultra-supercritical (USC) steam turbine is an important issue in many ways. Theoretical and empirical correlation equations, developed a few decades ago, have been widely used in commercial programs for a prediction of performance. To improve of these correlation equations and apply them to the high pressure turbine of a USC steam turbine, computational fluid dynamic analysis was carried out and correlation equations to calculate efficiency variation of each stage were made. Both fluid dynamic characteristic and thermodynamic performance was analyzed for the development of the correlation equations. In particular, the impact of flow addition through an overload valve (OLV) between stages was examined throughly. The trend of pressure drop due to the flow mixing by the OLV flow addition was analyzed and an efficiency correlation equation considering the OLV flow was also made.

In the present study, 20 kW turbine for OTEC with a ejector and a motive pump is designed and performance prediction is implemented by means of CFD. The meridional analysis for initial geometry and CFD for detail design are used to design the turbine. This turbine has about 90.9% efficiency and 28.47 kW power at 15,000 rpm and pressure ratio of 1.53. Homogeneous mixture model is used because two phase flow can be occurred in the turbine. Performance evaluation is carried out and then results are presented by plotting of power, mass flow rate and efficiency as varying pressure ratio and rotational speed.

In this study, an in-house program to analyze the performance degradation for gas turbines is developed using MATLAB and is validated using commercial software. This program consists of design and off-design calculations. The results of design calculation is used for reference values of off-design calculation. The off-design calculation is composed of measured and expected performance analyses, and turbine inlet temperature correction. In general, performance degradation is analyzed by comparing the results of measured and expected performance analysis. However, if gas turbine performance degrades, turbine inlet temperature might increase due to the general control logic to comply with the power demand. Therefore, it is required to consider the deviation of turbine inlet temperature from the normal value in the performance diagnosis to analyze the performance degradation exactly. In this study, a special effort is given to the correction of turbine inlet temperature. The accuracy of the developed program is confirmed by comparison with commercial software, and its capability of performance diagnosis using the turbine inlet temperature correction is demonstrated.

The flotation performance of the induced gas flotation (IGF) machine is considerably influenced by geometric configurations of rotor and stator. The interaction of rotor and stator, which are the most important components in IGF, serves to mix the air bubbles. Thus, the understanding of flow characteristics and consequential analysis on the machine are essential for the optimal design of IGF. In this study, two-phase (water and air) flow characteristics in the forced-air mechanically stirred Dorr-Oliver flotation cell was investigated using ANSYS CFX. In addition, the void fraction and the velocity distributions are determined and presented with different blade configurations.

In general industry, TFM(turbine flow meters) as measuring instruments having high reliability are widely used in the trade of petroleum and in the measurement of tap water and hot water. The TFM is performed calibration for using in the field and is mainly calibrated at room temperature. Since accuracy of TFM depends on Reynolds number of fluid, TFM is calibrated at same Reynolds number by changing flow rate. Furthermore, the TFM using a fluid of high temperature should have considered for other factors such as the thermal expansion of the parts and characteristics change is unknown changes in the turbine flow meter accordingly. In this paper, two turbine flowmeter are experimentally studied about characteristics change using the facilities which can change fluid temperature from 6 degree celsius to 90 degree celsius. As a result, the turbine flow meter can be calibrated to minimize the error characteristic at a similar temperature and the actual temperature.

In this paper, the effect of oil conditions in rotor dynamic behaviors of a FFRB (Fully-Floating Ring Bearing) is investigated. Through the characteristic of a FFRB has two films, it has several advantages such as less friction loss and better stability over a wide speed range. However, it is difficult to supply a oil to the inner film. Thus, turbocharger makers have been paid significant attention to the lubrication of a FFRB because of its importance. This work focuses on the influence of oil inlet pressure and temperature. The methodologies of computational simulation and experimental test were used to estimate the rotor dynamic behaviors. In experimental test, the single-scroll turbocharger for the 1.4L diesel engine was used. The results show that the oil inlet pressure and temperature will place considerable influence on the rotor response. Oil conditions affect RSR (Ring Speed Ratio) which is cause of sub-synchronous vibrations, which also cause of oil whirling and whip even a critical speed. At higher speed range, the phenomenon of self-excited vibrations which is cause of instability of fluid whirl is investigated through the orbit shapes that consist of small orbit and large amplitude orbit. It is shown that some performance of a FFRB can be controlled by the conditions of oil supply. Finally, it was revealed that the oil induced operating conditions will strongly affect the turbocharger rotor dynamics behaviors.

This paper predicts the rotordynamic force coefficients of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) with ball-socket pivot and compares the predictions to the published test data obtained under load-between-pad (LBP) configuration. The present TPJB model considers the pivot stiffness calculated based on the Hertzian contact stress theory. Due to the compliance of the pivot, the predicted journal eccentricity agree well with the measured journal center trajectory for increasing static loads, while the early prediction without pivot model consideration underestimates it largely. The predicted pressure profile shows the significant pressure development even on the unloaded pads along the direction opposite to the loading direction. The predicted stiffness coefficients increase as the static load and the rotor speed increase. They agree excellently with test data from open literature. The predicted damping coefficients increase as the static load increases and the rotor speed decreases. The prediction underestimates the test data slightly. In general, the current predictive model including the pivot stiffness improves the accuracy of the rotordynamic performance predictions when compared to the previously published predictions.

Sodium hypochlorite, used as water disinfectant, is generated by electrolysis of salt. Compared to chlorine gas disinfection, it is free from high-pressure gas regulation and does not generate toxic gas, so it is increasingly used as a safe disinfectant. Despite these advantages, the concentration of sodium hypochlorite decreases with temperature during long-term storage, and the amount of chlorate increases when a large amount is added, it has mainly been applied to small-scale waterworks. To solve this problem, high sodium hypochlorite generation was developed. In this study, the changes of concentration and chlorate of sodium hypochlorite with time has been studied. As a result of the test, it was found that the usable period of sodium hypochlorite produced at a certain temperature or less was increased from 1.5 days to 13 days. Overall, sodium hypochlorite can be applied even in large-scale waterworks, which makes operation more stable and also reduces the disinfection byproducts, thus it contributed greatly to securing water quality.

This paper presents a numerical investigation on the local hydraulic cavitation phenomena of water resulting from the rotor with high rotational speed in the hydraulic cavitation heat generator. The numerical simulation utilizes the standard k-epsilon turbulence model, the mixture multiphase model and the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model to simulate the complex cavitation phenomena in the generator. For exploring the efficient shape of the dimples on the rotor to causing cavitation phenomena artificially, the pressure distributions and the volume fractions of the vapor on the rotor are investigated respectively about different shapes of the rotor in the generator. The optimum shape of the dimple to causing cavitation phenomena in the selected shapes is obtained by the means of the numerical simulation.
